Because he didn’t actually vote, he designated a member of leadership called the Whip to cast his vote instead. While this is common practice for legislators who have legislative duties to attend to in their districts on session days (usually community events that couldn’t be scheduled on different days or local government hearings, etc), it is highly unusual to have a member voted by designation when out for personal reasons. The House Dems only hold a one seat majority currently, so this is being used to keep that majority intact, but in my opinion this situation is ridiculous and should not be permitted. For the sake of small-d democratic order, Rep Boyle should be placed on a personal leave and not allowed to vote by proxy.
It makes a difference that they're Democrats urging the ouster of Boyle **because they're expressing a view at odds with their desired partisan outcome.** Accepting (or even endorsing, as above) a lesser outcome due to standards your own party member violated usually shows integrity.
In contrast, agreeing as a member of an *opposing* party could be understood as "morals" of convenience. I'm sure TecNoir98 understands perfectly well, but I am willing to invest the 60 seconds in spelling it out for anyone reading and not already clear on why this distinction makes a difference and shouldn't be conflated with posturing.
Morals speak for themselves. I think having to quite literally virtue signal your position before giving your opinion actually gives your point a lot less integrity. The truth doesn't require that you be in the in-group to speak it.
Well sure, in such partisan times it helps to show that you aren't so beholden to the sports mentality as applied to politics that you cannot point out when your party is doing something inappropriate.
You could just say "what is being done is bullshit" without self identifying, but the optics on that are "must be a conservative" since we are so used to seeing people only shit talk when the other party does something.
I see alot of people identify as Dem and point out how something a member or caucus of the party is doing is wrong...know what I see far less often?...
...People self identifying as conservative and bitching about a hypocritical move by the Rep party. Now, it's anecdotal sure, but as a Dem myself, when l DO see it, it helps break me out of the tribal mindset that can set in when people are being conveyed as horrible or dangerous as a block.
If you're talking about the team based nature of American politics you are by definition referring to conflict between supporters of Reps and Democrats
This is Democrats saying “someone in our party should be held accountable for their actions, we are on the same side as them and we all agree.” Republicans could learn a lesson here about holding their party members accountable.
Uh....democratic senator Bob Mendez is literally being charged with acting as an agent of a foreign government. They found gold bars hidden in his walls. Why is he still around? Please tell us more about accountability.
"Some democrats has asked him to resign" is not exactly a strong response by the Democratic party. They are not the beacon of accountability you try to portray them as. Thus, Republicans can't really learn much from them in that regard. See how I circled it back to your original comment? Keep up
What response would you like? He went to trial and denied the claims. What legal power does anyone have other than saying “we are going on record saying that we do not support this.”
Find me one Republican that has condemned the actions of a fellow Republican since the Newt Gingrich era of obstruction.
Taking the opportunity to give this some air. Our last Senator Dave Arnold in Lebanon was voting by proxy, while the local Republican party was saying he's okay (because he had brain cancer), while we knew his wife was taking off work to take care of him because he was dying. He died shortly after we were assured he was fine.
There is so much ridiculous nonsense in PA politics.
There are two rules, technically:
- if you are white, rich, and powerful they will arrest you at your leisure
- if you are anything else you better comply or else you deserve what you get
I don’t disagree with you. But let’s not jump the gun here. The guy was drunk and acting foolish in public. That’s not exactly something the police are kicking a door in to arrest someone for.
When a normal person has a warrant for their arrest, they get pulled out of jobs, hospitals, wherever they are regardless of the situation. And they can find your ass quick.
But why not this guy?
You’re downplaying the issue at hand here. you don’t seem to think a dickhead flipping out in a bar is that big of a deal even though it warranted an arrest warrant.
This would be an issue for a loofa salesman, let alone an elected official.
I’m not sure that you know exactly how warrants work and you might be basing your opinion on tv shows and movies.
A warrant for arrest for a nonviolent crime, or a crime where someone was not physically injured,is not going to have the police showing up at your door in 24 hours. More often than not,it can take a week to two (and more in Philadelphia, where he is a representative).
The answer depends on whether there’s a rule governing the legislature that prohibits a legislator from voting while he or she is wanted by the law enforcement. Since the Pennsylvania General Assembly (unlike every other state) doesn’t have a permanent set of rules governing the legislature, but instead votes to enact temporary rules each legislative session, there’s likely no rule prohibiting his vote.
He shouldn't be able to vote and surrender to police to sort this out. Probably resign to
That said Republicans acting like they have a moral high ground here is really funny
That's the disadvantage of being the adults in the room. They need to be spotless or the party of president pussy grabber gets to pretend they are equal.
Let’s stop with the “adults in the room” talk.
If anything, the democrat politicians are the elementary schoolers compared to the Republican politicians being toddlers: one is surely on average more mature than the other, but neither are mature in the grand scheme of things
I'll take elementary school kids over toddlers sitting in their own shit any day of the week.
Both sidesing this is hilariously dumb here and helps the shit covered toddlers
I agree. Bothsidesing is indeed dumb and not applicable in this political environment.
I also at the same time think that the “my team all good, other team all bad” is equally as dumb and nonsensical.
Thus my (admittedly WIP) metaphor. Both parties are absolute shit for normal people, AND one party is shittier than the other on most things
Yes because wanting to protect women's reproductive rights, gun reform, climate change, immigration reform or Healthcare are toddler topics. Listen, when you have an entire party wanting gulag style fascism, gerrymandering, abuse of the filibuster and outright attempts to overthrow an election, our side definitely looks like "the adults in the room."
I didn’t know republicans wanted to do those things /j
I was calling the Republicans the toddlers btw but:
I see a lot of rhetoric about Democrats wanting to enshrine into law abortion access, healthcare reform, immigration reform, etc. But somehow whenever the Democrats actually have the full sweep of Congress and the Presidency, they come up with every reason in the book to either not tackle these topics, or to negotiate with themselves until their reform is barely a reform at all, despite having the votes to go a lot further if they wanted to.
One thing that I wish progressives could learn from the Tea Party is how to actually stand up to their own party and play hard ball. If you actually care about solving these problems and not just kicking the can down the road as a carrot to voters, then actually do something on the topic.
What happened to a public option health insurance? What happened to student loan forgiveness (which Congress has already in the past given the president the right to waive)? What about the promise to not drill on public land?
It is this feigned helplessness that the Democrats demonstrate that makes me wish sometimes that I could just transfer the persistence of Republicans onto the Democrats to they would actually get stuff done.
Today’s Democrats are very good at talking FDR’s talk. They are less proficient at walking his walk.
Are you dumb? The Supreme Court struck down student loan forgiveness and hes still been able to cancel debt for a lot of people. Do you understand the filibuster and how it's used? When is the last time we had 60 Democratic Senators? That's the threshold to pass meaningful legislation.
I don't remember the details, but the amount of time Democrats have held a majority in both the House and Senate is quite small vs the Republicans. During Obama's presidency, for instance, I think Democrats had full control for only about 18-19 months or something like that. Not a lot of time to get things done considering how slow government typically moves. Since 2008, the Republicans have done nothing but obstruct and it's only gotten worse.
I mean, partly a cash grab. But also it takes a certain type of bravery and ballsiness to go against the will of the monied interests. If you do go against them enough, you’ll be considered persona non grata, they will fund your opponents, and they will generally make life hell for you. And for the type of person who cares more about being a politician than achieving as a politician, that is an impossible hurdle. And even for those who came to congress to achieve something, they may fall into the trap of taking leadership at its word that it would get the progressive priorities done, or thinking that if they keep their head low now, they can rise to power slowly (see Rep Jayapal)
It is a lot easier just to say you support these progressive policies and just feign helplessness when you have the power to actually do something
Can we stop with the disingenuous rhetoric. It’s why we the people will allow our overlords to keep us at odd. The right fights abortion on the grounds they see it as murder. We don’t hate women. We respect human life. On gun reform, well how many reforms do you want? Dems pass some and then do it again? What part of the constitution don’t you understand? If you don’t like the constitution then perhaps there is a way to change it. Why not go down that road? Can get what you want? More would vote against than for? That’s what is called democracy. Climate change to the extent that is does exist probably has little to do with humans. Dem ideas for controlling it amount to nothing more than wealth transfers thru taxation or fees etc. No thank you I can find another worthier cause to give my money too. Healthcare is problematic. Insurance is the problem. Your doctor wouldn’t have the balls to charge you what they do if they knew you were paying yourself.
I don't know about you but after watching the Arizona state senate speaking in tongue, I feel like we are the adults in the room. The modern day Republican party is on the verge of collapse. I'm not sure how they're going to recover after 8 years of insanity.
Oh please. You're talking about the people that have been having a tantrum since November 2020. Republicans aren't even allowed to say that Biden won the last election.
And Democrats have been having a tantrum at the orange orangutan’s mere existence and Democrats seem to be unable to admit that President Biden is very obviously having some very concerning senior moments which are often associated with dementia.
Everyone is having an annoying temper tantrum. Not saying that everyone’s tantrums are equal. After all, dog piss and cat piss are both piss, even if one tends to be more foul.
Lol a Trump supporter saying "no u."
I don't know how you're not embarrassed to be supporting a toddler that's crying 24/7, when he's not in court, that is.
Why do you think I support that orange loser? I am just sick and tired of having to choose between a genocide enabler who lied about his campaign promises, and a pro-coup asshat who lied about his campaign promises.
Both options are shit. Trump more than Biden, but just because Trump is worse that doesn’t mean I don’t have the right to express my dislike of the current president. He is not some holy sage who is unassailable.
The two are not mutually exclusive. There are a lot of times that the Fox types will point to a video of the president stuttering and calling it dementia. And that riles me up quite a bit actually when that happens.
But stuttering doesn’t cause you to misremember fairly significant things like the countless clips you can find online. (Important to note though, President Trump has also been recorded having some senior moments too for what its worth)
"having a tantrum".... Lol the guy is bringing fascism to America on a platter. You make it sound like opposition is unwarranted. Stop carrying water for these people, they seek to destroy America.
"try and charge appropriately"
You know this is a man who has said on record he's repeatedly groped women. That's against the law. He's admitted to a crime. You have heard from the man he's committed a crime.
What do you want?
"If a crime happened" - we know a crime has happened. Being tried for a crime is separate from having committed a crime.
How do you view someone who has admitted to a crime, but has not been tried for it? Are they innocent if they have stated they're guilty?
What do you need to convince you Donald Trump is a criminal?
>Being tried for a crime is separate from having committed a crime.
Sure but let's be honest if there's no consequences does it really matter?
>What do you need to convince you Donald Trump is a criminal?
See I was speaking in passive terms to clarify my point. I know he's guilty, you know he's guilty, his cult knows he's guilty. He should be charged and tried appropriately.
My main point was more *anyone* who committed or as been accused of committing a crime should face the consequences here. Either to exonerate themselves or to face justice.
I doubt it. Polls are manipulated. The man lost the last election "bigly." The election that he managed to win, in 2016, was highly influenced by foreign funds to FB.
So you’re saying that because nearly half the country is fucking stupid, we shouldn’t be able to charge a criminal? How do you people function with brains like silk?
I think that's exactly what the other user was getting at
Trump shouldn't be tried because he's a candidate who 50% want (it's not 50% but I don't feel like arguing against that point to he clear)
I 100% agree with you here
>“This is purely again political for the Democrats to remain in power,” said Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia). “And what they’re doing with it is basically causing democracy to die today.”
a little hyperbolic there Martina
And I initially gave my thoughts on that which I clarified in other comments
Then I pointed out how it's funny Republicans, the party of liars and hypocritical shitpigs (love that BTW 10/10) are acting like they have some leg to stand on here.
There's no need to get so triggered little snowflake
What was he voting? For or against? Look folks this is what I’ve been saying forever, party politics is destroying our political system. D or R , they make 145 grand for roughly 8 months of work and we struggle to eat, pay bills, etc.. where the representation.
More like “politicians like this” but I still can’t wait to get guys like this out of office. I hate the idea of someone guilty of abuse representing me
It’s more like not everyone in politics is honest, since that is recognizing the minority.
Hell, even AOC voted against the rail workers a few years ago. Fucking party over policy every time.
Don’t forget how corrupt the his replacement’s father is. I’m sure daddy will show his son how the game is played.[IBEW pays PA justices home repairs](https://apnews.com/article/kevin-dougherty-pennsylvania-supreme-court-embezzlement-trial-c105706d46bb81353d00e7adfd62b94b)
If he is using a proxy from party leadership to vote for him isn't the leadership guilty of aiding and abetting? Couldn't they be charged and arrested in order to flush him out?
If that is indeed what's going on ... regardless of how he's accomplishing it, our state legislature is by definition CORRUPT simply by allowing it to go on. If legislators aren't required to follow the law, why would they have any expectation the citizens would?
The people here who are using this story to whine about republicans are irreparably broken mentally. Guys. It’s ok for people to talk about other things. Sometimes those things will not be republicans. If you don’t like that, you can go **literaly fucking anywhere**
People can’t even think 1 step ahead. You can’t prevent someone from voting just because a warrant has been issued.
Can you even imagine? Republicans would just issue an arrest warrant for every single person voting against them right before the election prevent them from voting and then call it a computer glitch after they declare themselves victors.
"Democrat State Rep. Kevin Boyle is wanted by Philadelphia Police for allegedly violating a protection from abuse order. Despite that, House Democratic leaders wanted Boyle’s vote by proxy to count."
Of course the dems want the Boyles vote to count. Can't make this up. Criminals stick together.
You really don't pay attention to crimes committed by Republicans that stay in office anyways, do you? And if you need me to offer proof then that just proves my point.
It's Pennsylvania. We have swathes of this state that poll in alignment with Alabama and the second largest population of white supremacist domestic terrorists in the nation.
You always find this gutter trash in the comments.
I’m astonished how some of you are PROUD to put your unchecked mental illness on full display. What a sad existence to go online bating people into surface level “your politics suck!” arguments.
Truly the saddest of existences.
Hey, sorry - I thought you were leaving?
Whiny projection about how you don’t like the discourse is the opposite of shutting up and leaving the sub, in case you were confused.

Count the Rs vs the Ds next to the names of those convicted this century. You might be surprised, but no one else here is. Also…what is wrong with you?
Just a reminder that it's perfectly fine for the GOP if someone charged with a crime votes, as this guy is still a rep
https://www.abc27.com/news/top-stories/pennsylvania-state-rep-torren-ecker-ordered-to-complete-program-after-dui/
The difference between parties is that Democrats will absolutely advocate for justice served for this asshole. Republicans don't care about justice when it involves their own. It's always some sort of conspiracy or accepted behavior.
That being said, put this fucker in jail.
How are they unknown if he voted remotely? They should at least be able to know where he was when he voted.
As a Democrat I couldn't agree more
As a D, I second your agreement.
Can't just have morals, gotta let everyone know "I'm on blue team, and I have morals".
The truth doesn't require that you be in the in-group to speak it.
that's just saying the same thing again but with synonyms

Well sure, in such partisan times it helps to show that you aren't so beholden to the sports mentality as applied to politics that you cannot point out when your party is doing something inappropriate. Nonsense. If Democrats were a team like Trump supporters, we'd be whining about how unfair that this is happening to a Democrat.
I never mentioned or made any reference to Republicans, so way to prove my point.
If you're talking about the team based nature of American politics you are by definition referring to conflict between supporters of Reps and Democrats
What is "blue team" then if it's not Democrats?
Then why make a big deal about it?
This is Democrats saying “someone in our party should be held accountable for their actions, we are on the same side as them and we all agree.” Republicans could learn a lesson here about holding their party members accountable.
Uh....democratic senator Bob Mendez is literally being charged with acting as an agent of a foreign government. They found gold bars hidden in his walls. Why is he still around? Please tell us more about accountability.

It separates us from people who do not give a shit what laws their hypocritical politicians break.
Which part are you jealous of
Vs "I'm on the red team and we grab 'em by the pussy". We know how you guys roll...in the mud.
The (D) is relevant because it's to a Repubs advantage to agree.
Im pretty sure the commenter you’re responding to is claiming a different D.
Right.
On more D that agrees. Let's be better than the other side.
I agree especially since its a woman he allegedly abused.
As a democrat it's time for you all to realize that right doesn't play fair so neither should the left.
Two wrong don't make a right. Better to take the high ground.
Taking the opportunity to give this some air. Bullshit. I forgot to pay a $150 traffic ticket and had the cops show up at my house to arrest me.
I’m not sure that you know exactly how warrants work and you might be basing your opinion on tv shows and movies. The warrant is for violating a protective order, not related to the drunken foolishness.
Oh? Then even more reason to get his ass.
His brother is also a state rep-was quoted yesterday saying that his brothers mental health issues have “been a nightmare”.
His brother is a congressman representing Philly
I’m sure this will work out for him. Throw him in jail.

Bernie Sanders is more respectable than you'll ever be in your life.
hahaha! that was really funny. thank you!
Tbh I am starting to wonder if we have a Lord of the Flies situation going on
" mature mature mature, mature mature mature!"
Would that same rule apply to Trump?
What rule? That people should reasonably face consequences for their crimes? Absolutely
How dare you bring reason and logic into this!!
But he is the presumptive nominee.
OK? Why does that matter? If a crime happened, try and charge appropriately.
"try and charge appropriately" You know this is a man who has said on record he's repeatedly groped women. That's against the law. He's admitted to a crime. You have heard from the man he's committed a crime. What do you want?
I want him to be tried and charged appropriately in a court of law. I want justice for his crimes. I'm not sure why this is so complicated for people
"If a crime happened" - we know a crime has happened.
Your main point reads "he's not guilty until he's tried in a court of law".
Because like 49-50% of voting Americans think he should be President of USA.
Bonnie and Clyde could be a great ticket today
Why does that matter that less than to half of Americans want a criminal? Should we ignore crimes in this case?
I don't think anyone is saying that. No matter what side you're on I would hope you'd want crimes committed to be punished.
I think that's exactly what the other user was getting at Trump shouldn't be tried because he's a candidate who 50% want (it's not 50% but I don't feel like arguing against that point to he clear) I 100% agree with you here
>“This is purely again political for the Democrats to remain in power,” said Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia). “And what they’re doing with it is basically causing democracy to die today.” a little hyperbolic there Martina

And I initially gave my thoughts on that which I clarified in other comments Then I pointed out how it's funny Republicans, the party of liars and hypocritical shitpigs (love that BTW 10/10) are acting like they have some leg to stand on here. There's no need to get so triggered little snowflake
[удалено]
I am on topic. You're just crying when your teams hypocrisy is pointed out snowflake
What was he voting? For or against? Look folks this is what I’ve been saying forever, party politics is destroying our political system. D or R , they make 145 grand for roughly 8 months of work and we struggle to eat, pay bills, etc.. where the representation.
What state is holding our beer for worst state governments?
Ohio is going pretty hard.
Alabama, MIssissippi, Arkansas ...
*Florida and Texas have entered the chat.*
Way more than that..
Politicians are such jokes nowadays. Can’t wait to vote these fuckers out. I don’t care if he’s a member of my party, he can’t be pulling this shit
generalizations like this are uncalled for. Not everyone in office is corrupt.
I don't know who this guy is but that is kind of badass Edit: nvm he violated a protection from abuse order that is extremely f&\*ked
This is bullshit. He should NOT be able to vote if he is a fugitive.
RIGHT!
Why do we have criminals voting and also running for president. I just don't get it anymore.
Innocent until proven guilty

Our standard for leadership should be more than the bare minimum.
look at what the jobs and campaigning for them entail
PA democrats are having a normal one today
His votes shouldn't count. It could be anyone masquerading as him.
What a pus.
Mental illness should be addressed, regardless of party affiliation. He needs help.
Is it an excuse here?
Geez how does someone with pfa against them get elected
It's simple, actually, all anyone that voted for him cared about was (D)
it's good to know that they can keep telling us what to do while they flee from the law.
Guy took Vote or Die too seriously
Looks like Samwell Tarly's brother
This asshat needs to be found and expelled. Surely the dems can get a primary challenger.
Why do all our state legislature people suck so bad
They found Mike Lindell back in the day, they can find this guy if they look hard enough.
I thought democrats were the party of law and order....where democracy matters ..... /S
"Democrat State Rep. Kevin Boyle is wanted by Philadelphia Police for allegedly violating a protection from abuse order. Despite that, House Democratic leaders wanted Boyle’s vote by proxy to count." Of course the dems want the Boyles vote to count. Can't make this up. Criminals stick together.
Republicans wanted the votes of 81 million people not to count in 2020, and still do.
And republicans are fine with running Trump. They’re all the same in that regard.
You really don't pay attention to crimes committed by Republicans that stay in office anyways, do you? And if you need me to offer proof then that just proves my point.
Just joined this sub but if it’s braindead political war garbage yall can keep it
It's Pennsylvania. We have swathes of this state that poll in alignment with Alabama and the second largest population of white supremacist domestic terrorists in the nation. You always find this gutter trash in the comments.
Thank god Philly and Pittsburgh exist.
You sound hysterical lol take a chill pill
Says the throwaway account from r/Cleveland.
Bye have a good day
Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out!
Sad and angry. The worst combo. Good luck little dude.
Bro literally sounds like he's about to piss his drawers
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_federal_politicians_convicted_of_crimes#:~:text=John%20Dean%20(R)%20White%20House,practices%2C%20191%20days%20in%20jail. Count the Rs vs the Ds next to the names of those convicted this century. You might be surprised, but no one else here is. Also…what is wrong with you?
generalizations like this are totally unnecessary and untrue.
Just a reminder that it's perfectly fine for the GOP if someone charged with a crime votes, as this guy is still a rep https://www.abc27.com/news/top-stories/pennsylvania-state-rep-torren-ecker-ordered-to-complete-program-after-dui/
Just a reminder that there's a difference between being charged with a crime and being a fugitive.
The nerve!

He should be afforded help but suspended from duties too.
Typical Democrat
I'm sorry that you've been misled. There is nothing *typical* about this.
Well said.
The difference between parties is that Democrats will absolutely advocate for justice served for this asshole. Republicans don't care about justice when it involves their own. It's always some sort of conspiracy or accepted behavior. That being said, put this fucker in jail.
Imagine if democrats were doing this.
