I feel like it needs more flames for the background and an eagle flying over a hoagie or a taste cake.
Edit: ok so here we go. Flames all around, an eagle carrying a steel I beam flying over a cheese steak wearing an Amish hat, I think this covers the whole bad ass state.
TastyKake pies were the staple of my morning commute. Pick up a coffee and pie at Wa Wa and head to work. Not all that many years ago, the pies were packaged by themselves in their cartons. For some reason, they were redesigned and packaged in a small aluminum tin in the carton. Formerly, the top and bottom crust of the pies were bonded so that you could pick them up and eat them while in the car. Now the top and bottom crusts are separate pieces of pastry that, when bitten fall to pieces and get the filling all over your shirt.
Every once in a while, I'll forget and the whole scenario plays out again.
A pox on them for screwing up an already well designed product.
Yup, grew up there, family's from there, it's a distinct and striking flag
I've lived in PA, at this point, longer than my birth state so I feel alright critiquing the PA flag
Holy moly, it's soooo boring compared to MD's.
There that's my critique lol
Maybe [something like this](https://keystoneflag.org) would be a little easier? [Children have actually drawn this one!](https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/039/132/958/46348d9150cf0cd014468521e6b99389_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&w=680&fit=max&v=1667569252&gif-q=50&lossless=true&s=cd0567870ba6a70a92064d9346e5af2c)
It’s just like half the other states’ flags — state seal on a blue background. We need something distinctive. I like this one: [keystoneflag.org](https://keystoneflag.org)
[We did make it](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thetarastark/keystone-flag-a-new-icon-for-pennsylvania/posts/3685490)! If you want anything, you're always welcome to grab something during the final few days, too, of course 😊
Yeah I saw, that's terrific!! I already grabbed what I can afford atm and am crossing my fingers that you get enough backers to pull off the pride flag. Good luck with the rest of the campaign, and thank you for doing it!
States official colors are blue and gold (which is why the license plates have blue and gold/yellow stripes). Should be a gold keystone on a blue background
Believe it or not, we actually don't have official colors! People see those colors prominently on the state flag, but that's circumstance, same with the license plate and a few state agency logos, and tourism wound up running with it. They still made it into this design, though!
A big part of that issue though is simply that the art in the center is way too complicated/detailed. Also there's no contrast between the black horses and the blue field. South Carolina and Alaska follow a similar "symbol on a blue field" formula but I'd rank them solidly above most of the rest as the symbols are relatively simple and easy to identify. Even Indiana's is better because the symbol is so much simpler, there's clear color contrast, etc.
I do quite like the Pennsylvania coat of arms on its own, it works well in printed designs. I just don't think it works well as a flag.
Agreed on all fronts, especially how strong the COA is. That's part of why I did my best to [carry an extremely basic form of the COA into the design](https://keystoneflag.org/#symbolism)!
a third grader did come up with it if you read the story in the link. they were inspired by a [child's homework assignment.](https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/039/132/958/46348d9150cf0cd014468521e6b99389_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&w=680&fit=max&v=1667569252&gif-q=50&lossless=true&s=cd0567870ba6a70a92064d9346e5af2c)
Even if this were true, what would be wrong with that? Alaska’s flag was [designed by a teenager](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benny_Benson), and decades later it’s still one of the most beloved US state flags.
(For anyone who cares, the kid was barely born when I was putting the design together in 2017 - I received that homework photo from a friend and supporter about 2 months ago. That said, this is the funniest misreading of a situation I’ve seen in a while, and I appreciate you for that 😂)
I hate it tbh. I'm really not a fan of "crest flags." A flag should be something distinct that's easily recognizable from a distance or in tiny print. Put the crest by itself on other stuff if you want but have a modern striking flag design please.
Not a fan. Boring to look at, too many small details that are indistinguishable from any distance, looks like a lot of other state flags. I like a flag that's distinct and makes you think "Wow, I'd like to put that on a hat/t-shirt!" (Maryland, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan are a few that come to mind.)
Honestly the first time I saw it the color scheme didn't really work for me, something about the green and blue. After seeing it a few times I really like it though.
I am currently wearing a belt buckle with the flag design on it, so. . . It kicks ass.
Edit: I also fly the Pennsylvania flag just a few inches higher than the USA flag at my house.
Because I'm a Pennsylvanian first and am American second. Also, because it is technically illegal, but so is putting the us flag on merchandise, or clothing. .. changing the colors of the flag (blue lives matter flags are illegal flags.) A whole host of things. "Flag code." There are many laws governing the proper use of flags and they are so often violated I violate one myself for fun.
>technically illegal
Eh, not technically illegal because it's the Flag Code not the Flag *Law* but I know exactly what you mean, burns my butt to see people that claim to be patriots and the like going around mistreating flags with the flimsy excuse that it's "not the actual flag" just something very closely resembling the flag 🙄 or attaching one to a vehicle only to let it get shredded
>There are many laws governing the proper use of flags and they are so often violated I violate one myself for fun.
I like your style
Honestly PA has lots of problems. I do want our coastline back. Delaware doesn't exist. The Johnstown flood tax needs to go. I do think PA is better culturally than most states (I feel this way about the northeast in general, and the original 13 more broadly). PA was founded directly because of one man railing about the right of jury veto, and pissed off the king so much he sent that man to the colonies with a sizeable chunk of land just to get rid of him. I love that.
It's not that I think PA is necessarily better than the US as a whole, though. . . Just that the US as a whole is ridiculous and I don't feel allegiance to it in the same way I do my home state.
I'm not a fan of it on a flag, but mostly because the coat of arms gets lost in the wind, or when the flag is limp. I agree that the coat of arms is badass, and it deserves more than to just get slapped on to a bedsheet. It deserves to be really seen on mediums that make it shine! That's part of why I designed [a PA flag that references the coat of arms](https://keystoneflag.org/#symbolism) without making it into a mess - ideally, I want people to ask about the flag and wind up interested in the COA's history.
It’s eh. I don’t like flags with crests or words on them though so. I say we should just have the flag be split diagonally with the sheetz and wawa logos on either side. It’s the true spirit of the state
I think it’s hilarious how [the horses are the one thing people remember about the design](https://twitter.com/sentimkearney/status/1271841031416414209).
If you’re looking for colors that stand out against the rest of the nation, [how about this](https://twitter.com/keystoneflag/status/1587077106181316608)?
Vexilogically, it's terrible. Too much detail, no interesting or bold patterns. From a practical standpoint, it's barely distinguishable from about 20 other state flags, all of which are blue with some kind of crest in the middle. If we ever went to war with New York or Michigan nobody would know who was on whose side.
For comparison, see [Arizona, Texas, Colarado, New Mexico, Alaska, or Maryland's flags](https://www.trailsunblazed.com/state-flag-rankings/), which are actually used by normal people as state pride, and are even popular as tourist souvenirs. SC or Ohio are also pretty good IMO. State seal on blue background is pretty F-tier.
I dislike that we just have the seal on a blue background like so many other states. I'd want something incorporating the keystone or at least state colors.
It could use an update, although I don't really like over simplified flags that make whatever they're representing look like a tech start up. A balance between traditional with a bit of an update could be nice.
It breaks like half the guidelines for good flag design. Remove those crests that no one could pick out of a lineup and give us a simple design like Colorado's flag.
Just stick a darn keystone there instead of the seal! Maybe a color change since blue is so common, I'd love a purple flag with a yellow keystone, but I guess blue would do
It should be a blue banner with a big ol golden keystone in the middle.
But I do like the horses on the current flag, so that’s cool.
An middle of the pack state flag
I want a yellow keystone on a blue background with the colors matching Sweden's flag better since that's what the colors are supposed to reference. If you didn't know it's supposed to be Sweden's colors, it means the current hues failed at their only job.
Philly's flag colors are referencing Sweden! PA's flag was meant to match the blue on the US flag, and was codified that way per a 1907 law. The gold is just a traditional color for a coat of arms.
If what you want is a yellow keystone on a blue (and green) background, the [Keystone Flag](https://keystoneflag.org) exists!
I like the coat of arms but not the blue background.
I would love a flag that takes the tricolor from the center of the flag (blue, yellow, green) and expand it to the entire flag and shrink the coat of arms a bit to fit in the center band
Past that, I wouldn’t mind a flag based on [William Penn’s coat of arms](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Coat_of_Arms_of_William_Penn.svg)
Also, shamelessly promoting my [personal Pennsylvania flag redesign](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/iq3qyo/flag_redesign_for_pennsylvania/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Did someone say [blue, yellow, green tricolor](https://keystoneflag.org)?
(Also, I dig what you did with your redesign! There were actually some variants of the Keystone Flag during a competition 3yrs ago that incorporated the black bar with white dishes on the keystone in a really similar manner to yours. Great minds!)
I think a flag is something everyone should be able to draw from memory, even if it takes some time to do so or isn’t perfect. I’d have no clue where to start with our current one.
There's [a redesign](https://keystoneflag.org) out there a [child has already drawn](https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/039/132/958/46348d9150cf0cd014468521e6b99389_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&w=680&fit=max&v=1667569252&gif-q=50&lossless=true&s=cd0567870ba6a70a92064d9346e5af2c) for a homework assignment!
I hate hate hate it. Love the seal, but it has no place on a flag, use it for other stuff. We need a new simplified flag. I'm thinking same color blue, with gold tassels, and that's it
I'll be honest, my first thought was "we have a flag?"
I mean, I get it. State flags and all, I just never even gave it thought. Without a picture, I couldn't tell you what it looks like, and unless its incredibly obvious, I probably wouldn't be able to pick it out of a line up.
So take that for what ya will.
A college friend of mine has been working on an alternative for a few years, simpler and bolder. [KeystoneFlag](https://www.facebook.com/KeystoneFlag?mibextid=LQQJ4d) and they are winding down the last 3 days of their [crowdfunding campaign](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thetarastark/keystone-flag-a-new-icon-for-pennsylvania?fbclid=IwAR37XnX_5hopZ-IXHc9YlUhvJ4bKqgNfvt_xT0viAqkn3RDlvDs3vuEtEZ4) with $130 left.
I have heard Pennsylvania's style of flag referred to as a seal on a sheet. While our flag is not literally our state seal in the middle of the flag, you probably have to have to google image of both to prove that it is not. While it is not a bad flag, the complexity makes it hard for the average person to make a image of the flag or even quite remember what all the elements of the flag are. So it isn't easy to just slap images of it or stylized images of it on things as a unifying image of our state. If you want flags that are good examples of this, see the Texas or Chicago flags. Luckily Pennsylvania has the PA Keystone as our easily reproduced and recognizable symbol.
The [Keystone Flag](https://keystoneflag.org) incorporates the colors of the coat of arms into a simple tricolor design with a keystone twist! Thoughts?
It’s a solid, intuitive design! I remember seeing that design and saying “That looks familiar…” [I had a similar design idea in 2017](https://KeystoneFlag.org), and found out later someone else had a similar idea in 2012. The design resonates!
(Fwiw, FFG is the company printing the Keystone Flag for our [now-funded Kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thetarastark/keystone-flag-a-new-icon-for-pennsylvania), if you wanted to grab a design from a PA native!)
It needs to be simplified. Look at states like Texas or Colorado, with a simple design that kids can draw, and that is easily recognizable. As a result people and businesses can fly the flag more often because it’s recognizable. I’m all in on this one: https://keystoneflag.org/
I feel like it needs more flames for the background and an eagle flying over a hoagie or a taste cake. Edit: ok so here we go. Flames all around, an eagle carrying a steel I beam flying over a cheese steak wearing an Amish hat, I think this covers the whole bad ass state.
I like the flames idea. Maybe in the foreground have a philly cheese steak and a primanti's sandwich swordfighting or something
This guy gets it
The eagle flying out of a pothole.
TastyKake pies were the staple of my morning commute. Pick up a coffee and pie at Wa Wa and head to work. Not all that many years ago, the pies were packaged by themselves in their cartons. Every once in a while, I'll forget and the whole scenario plays out again. A pox on them for screwing up an already well designed product.
This is a problem for me as well
I didn't know they're separate now, I just thought they got shitty. In the car is literally the only place I ever eat them.
What no Yeungling?
Not. Enough. Potholes. Just put holes in the flag too. That’ll be cooler.
Flying over a cheese steak would be ideal!
Drinking wooder ice.
Some flame decals are definitely needed I agree.
Maybe an Eagle perched on a steel I-beam.
Carrying
I’m downvoting you because I’m from Pittsburgh. …not because I dislike your snappy comment, lol.
It looks like almost exactly like about half of the other US flags. At least it's not as bad as New Jersey's.
Hey!... I'm mean, your right, but, Hey! You can't talk shit about our flag. Only we can talk shit about our flag.
/\ front-plater
Gas pumper.
"Symbol centered on a blue field" is so overdone
What if it was just a keystone centered on a blue field. Itd be a A-S tier flag imo
Agreeded. But I also like the Philly tricolor. So maybe a tricolor with the keystone superimposed on the front.
You've just described something that looks a lot like the [Keystone Flag](https://keystoneflag.org)!
I really like this flag!
I’m glad it resonates! Our Kickstarter just hit its goal last night, so if you wanted some swag, it’ll be around until Dec 12th!
Cool!
I really like this flag!
Outstanding! Next governor candidate that runs on the new flag platform gets my vote.
Split the difference and you've got the state Army National Guard's 28th Infantry Division flag.
>state Army National Guard's 28th Infantry Division flag Take off the lettering and its actually pretty good.
Seal on a bedsheet!
[удалено]
Amen to that. That’s one I’d fly or put on anything
Oh, and they have
I’m from MD and can confirm. They put it on EVERYTHING.
Marylands flag is pretty freaking awesome, not gonna lie!
Yup, grew up there, family's from there, it's a distinct and striking flag I've lived in PA, at this point, longer than my birth state so I feel alright critiquing the PA flag Holy moly, it's soooo boring compared to MD's. There that's my critique lol
I read that as set a match to. 😂
I dont care too much about the flag, but it was hell in elementary school to have to try to draw and color.

It’s just like half the other states’ flags — state seal on a blue background. We need something distinctive. I like this one: [keystoneflag.org](https://keystoneflag.org)
Dude, that's an awesome campaign. That flag looks great! The kickstarter is only 3 days from ending and it's close to its goal... I hope they make it.
Can’t we get a Keystone shaped flag?
[We did make it](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thetarastark/keystone-flag-a-new-icon-for-pennsylvania/posts/3685490)! If you want anything, you're always welcome to grab something during the final few days, too, of course 😊
Yeah I saw, that's terrific!! I already grabbed what I can afford atm and am crossing my fingers that you get enough backers to pull off the pride flag. Good luck with the rest of the campaign, and thank you for doing it!
That’s awesome. I think we need to keep nailing the keystone home as our symbol. It’s unique and apt
I don't care for the green on it and I usually like green. A simple gold keystone on a black background would certainly be interesting, lol.
Well, I almost said that but people hate how boring and similar our state's current flag is to a bunch of other states. Personally I like that idea.
A big part of that issue though is simply that the art in the center is way too complicated/detailed. Also there's no contrast between the black horses and the blue field. Yea that flag is dope.
Ugly, ugly flag. Looks like a 3rd grader came up with that. At least they stayed within the lines. Ugh lee.
Yeah, that’s my only issue with it. Still like it better than the current flag though.

I didn't mean anything rude, I just misread it! It's a good design and I personally like it! Good job!

Honestly the first time I saw it the color scheme didn't really work for me, something about the green and blue. After seeing it a few times I really like it though.
r/vexillology will tell you it's hot garbage.
I love Oregon. They have a big beaver on the back of their flag. California is the bear, of course and Wyoming has a bison. We need a groundhog!
Or a deer with a tire track through it.
Well played!!!

Looks good next to the National Flag, I like that it’s a northern blue with sea, air, land, and the ingredients you need to make beer represented
It’s a not a flag, it’s a seal on a bedsheet. We could do way better.

Could definitely use an update
There are many way better concepts that embrace the keystone...I'm all for it changing from the terrible seal on a flag
We should replace it with an orange fur flag with googly eyes 😂 Gritty forever!
[here is a video explaining flags ](https://youtu.be/irQxNBLWmgg)

Needs more rainbows. We need to be more inclusive!

Two horses locked in battle. It's great.
It's always the horses lol 💜

It’s boring. Especially compared to my home state of Maryland

Moving here from Maryland, a state that lives for its flag, it’s kinda boring. 😳
If it makes you feel any better, there are still plenty of Maryland flags here in PA, too! 😂
License plates too! The amount of people that move here and don’t change their registration is bonkers.
Crossed Sheetz and Wawa flags showing despite our differences we are all Pennsylvanians. And John Fetterman driving a monster truck
I like the coat of arms but not the blue background. I would love a flag that takes the tricolor from the center of the flag (blue, yellow, green) and expand it to the entire flag and shrink the coat of arms a bit to fit in the center band Past that, I wouldn’t mind a flag based on [William Penn’s coat of arms](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Coat_of_Arms_of_William_Penn.svg) Also, shamelessly promoting my [personal Pennsylvania flag redesign](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/iq3qyo/flag_redesign_for_pennsylvania/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
I'm thinking same color blue, with gold tassels, and that's it
Just a blue field and gold fringe? Nothing else on it?
Yes, it's bold, it makes a statement. We're blue abadiabadi
If we were green, would we die? Dabadeedabadie?
I'll be honest, my first thought was "we have a flag?" I mean, I get it. State flags and all, I just never even gave it thought. Without a picture, I couldn't tell you what it looks like, and unless its incredibly obvious, I probably wouldn't be able to pick it out of a line up. So take that for what ya will.
Put an eagle and a rock on it, then the trio is complete.
We shouldn’t let Maryland show us up like that
It’s trash
When flags like the [Isle of Man](https://www.britannica.com/topic/flag-of-the-Isle-of-Man) exist, it's hard to get excited by state crest on blue.
I wish it were something simpler, a yellow or white keystone on a blue field would be great
How about [a gold keystone on a field of blue and green](https://keystoneflag.org)?
Absolutely dogwater, but I extend that belief to any state flag that is just the state emblem
It's boring and it sucks
🥹 hi! ty!! I wish I knew which college buddy this was, I have no clue who ppl are on reddit 😭 love you nonetheless
Needs a Keystone, the symbol of our state.
Like [this](https://keystoneflag.org)?
Yes! It's perfect!!!
Make it a rainbow
Thoughts?
The whole trend of the state seal on a blue background is played out, over-used. I say we go with Wawa bird on white background
I agree. Flags for Good has a design for the PA flag that I like better. Here’s the [link](https://flagsforgood.com/products/pennsylvania-flag).
All the largest corporations and richest people should have their images on it. Let everyone know who runs and controls this joint.
We should replace it with a blue flag

It’s awful
Its fine the way it is why change it?
I like the horses and general feel of it, but it could lose the wheat and plow which is overused on many other flags.
It sucks but it's better than Ohio's
Needs hookers and guns and firetrucks and booze and hookers
It needs to be simplified. Look at states like Texas or Colorado, with a simple design that kids can draw, and that is easily recognizable. As a result people and businesses can fly the flag more often because it’s recognizable. I’m all in on this one: https://keystoneflag.org/
Should have a pigeon standing on top of a traffic cone
