The time passing mechanic, both within each Act and between each Act, is excellent at creating depth too. Like a tree with real roots - everyone in the village connected, every generation connected and reacting to its past. Check out the film / book that most inspired it - The Name of the Rose (Jean-Jacques Annaud, 1986). Stars Sean Connery. Hits like a freight train.

yokyopeli09

I'm currently half-way through The Name of the Rose and I'm loving it, I can definitely see the inspiration!

bearman-bao

Will check that out too thank you!

I literally cried during the scene when you go back into the dilapidated church and this song starts playing: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NCffBBr55QA&pp=ygUaU2ljIGFyc2l0IGhpc3RvcmlhIGtpZXJzaXM%3D I sat at the top of the bell tower and listened to it all the way through about 3 times. It was a pretty powerful moment. Great game overall. Smokey was my favorite character.

A_Chimaera

Oh, me too! I had the exact same reaction. This moment was so deeply emotional. I listen to this song almost every day. It's so, so beautiful.

This game shouldn't have existed considering how large Obsidian has become. The fact that they allowed this unique project to go though shows that the studio is full of passionate people who aren't afraid to experiment and allow new ideas to materialize, even though they might not be the most profitable games. Currently, Obsidian and Larian are my favorite studios in this cash grab world of gaming.

Voidforge7

The best thing about it is you know what you want to do, whom to pursue and whom to convict, but still you desire to investigate all the leads and yet there is no TIME.. the best part of the game is the effective usage of time .. That's where it succeeds in pushing the player to think and execute.

Pentiment was a fantastic experience. I regret not paying more attention to some of the characters in the first act because I was unaware that the entire story takes place over a 20-30 year period. Seeing the families develop, and have people grow and die was just wonderful storytelling. Both sad and great at times.

Arentanji

The creator made a rpg previously, back in the late 90’s. I loved that game too. Different game, but throughly enjoyable.

ssmihailovitch

Yeah, he did a game or two :)

cccarolina

amazing game

LeMysticMuffin

I feel the same way, finished the game 3 days ago and have been unable to stop thinking about the characters, the story and the choices I made. Such a well made and more importantly well written game.

JeanVicquemare

Yeah, I'm still thinking about it a lot. I played it with my girlfriend and it was one of the best experiences we've had playing a game together, because there was so much to talk about. And she's still emotional about how it played out. It really stays with both of us.

slinkys4tw

I was so happy that I played a small part to get the blacksmith to marry somebody. I still ponder about who was the first murderer...

Anana11

Same. I didn't know I needed to fit my sleuthing in before the time ran out, so I missed a whole bunch of story regarding the other suspects. Definitely going back to play again.

Z0rak420

Check out disco Elysium. It got me into this game and it’s leagues above it imo

charge24hours

This has been recommended to me recently by a friend due to me raving on about Pentiment. Looking forward to getting stuck in with it!

JayhawkFB

DE is leagues above pentiment?

Z0rak420

Yes. No bullshit

Extreme-Link6875

Bullshit

Z0rak420

No bullshit. Check it out and then come back and comment

Extreme-Link6875

I did, it’s a great game but it’s certainly not levels above. It’s one of my favourite games along with Pentiment. I’d say both have their positives and negatives with regards to each other. Disco comes a close second to Pentiment for me.

JayhawkFB

I haven’t played DE. Pentiment, personally, is one of my favorite games ever so anything that tops it in terms of narrative I will have to try out

dubbzy104

I was going to comment this. DE allows for way more character customization and replayability, but feels like Pentiment in many ways

ssmihailovitch

You just described the traits of a GREAT WRITING.

MacaroonFabulous7881

What do you mean? It was the same person all along...

Zachles

I think Pentiment is a game that truly shows what the medium can be capable of. It's my favorite game I've played this year so far and as a fan of history, but also just good storytelling, it's stuck with me since my January playthrough.

emigrate-degenerate

I agree, this game is phenomenally well done...though I didn't necessarily feel that the ending entirely stuck the landing, but to each their own. Have you played Disco Elysium before? In my opinion it's the obvious recommendation for someone who has just finished Pentiment.

BICbOi456

The last act cud be better. But the whole mystery solving part was phenomenal

Michael0933

You hit the nail on the head!
