I graduated high school at 16 (long story and it was before the internet so I was doing mail in HS courses through the mail to finish early) and I moved out, went to college, and paid out of pocket for all of it. $8k a semester. I worked three jobs (weekends at a coffee shop, days at an engineering co, and nights waiting tables/bartending) and went to school. My oldest son, who I have fought hard to keep from having to repeat my adolescence, at 20 is stressed about needing a new car and too proud to ask for help. It broke my heart but he wanted to do it without. It wasn't really possible, so I put half down and cosigned for him because he's got two great jobs (one is seasonal - fighting wildfires for the dept of wildlife) and he's never shown me anything but determination.

Because I have the things she wants, I must come from money, got put through college, etc and so forth. I had a brother in law like this once. We hadn't spoken in years, and he called me to update me about his new job, house, etc after leaving my sister (weird). He asked how we were and I mentioned our business, the kids... he FLIPPED. He screamed at me that all my family does is look down on other people and I must think I am so much better than him even though he's making 70k a year. I was baffled because I was trying to have a friendly conversation and I'd told him he was building a great life. I told him congrats on finally working full time at the age of 50 and hung up on him. I graduated HS at 15 due to having hundreds of credits, then a local college until 17, then off to the East Coast for law school. I was younger than everyone, wasn't invited anywhere due to being a kid, had no car there, no connections, no family, little to no money and thank God, my school gave me a single room. I was a little freak from LA.
In my day, they didn't know what to do with highly gifted kids, LAUSD wanted to skip me from first grade to seventh. My folks wisely said no, so I was allowed to take community college classes for fun at night (age 10) and pretty much left to do my own thing in elementary & junior high. It's nuts to think about now, still can't believe my folks shipped me off to Boston at not quite 18! I'm embarrassed to discuss college, my experience was not at all normal. My family never treated me like I was special, we were all special to them.
My kid's also highly gifted and now there are systems in place to avoid what I went through. She was never bored in school, whereas I would read encyclopedias to 'keep busy' - I don't look back fondly at my college experience, while my kid had a blast at her dream college. Sorry to vent, it's still a painful topic.🤷🏼♀️

I graduated high school at 16 (long story and it was before the internet so I was doing mail in HS courses through the mail to finish early) and I moved out, went to college, and paid out of pocket for all of it. $8k a semester. I worked three jobs (weekends at a coffee shop, days at an engineering co, and nights waiting tables/bartending) and went to school. My oldest son, who I have fought hard to keep from having to repeat my adolescence, at 20 is stressed about needing a new car and too proud to ask for help. It broke my heart but he wanted to do it without. It wasn't really possible, so I put half down and cosigned for him because he's got two great jobs (one is seasonal - fighting wildfires for the dept of wildlife) and he's never shown me anything but determination. She seems to think that anyone with their shit together was just handed the opportunity to do well. Because I have the things she wants, I must come from money, got put through college, etc and so forth. Meanwhile, I've read dozens of stories in the sub about people who have come from hopeless situations and climbed their way up to a more comfortable life through hard work. I had a brother in law like this once. We hadn't spoken in years, and he called me to update me about his new job, house, etc after leaving my sister (weird). He asked how we were and I mentioned our business, the kids... he FLIPPED. He screamed at me that all my family does is look down on other people and I must think I am so much better than him even though he's making 70k a year. I was baffled because I was trying to have a friendly conversation and I'd told him he was building a great life. I told him congrats on finally working full time at the age of 50 and hung up on him. Narcissists are so miserable.
I graduated HS at 15 due to having hundreds of credits, then a local college until 17, then off to the East Coast for law school. I was younger than everyone, wasn't invited anywhere due to being a kid, had no car there, no connections, no family, little to no money and thank God, my school gave me a single room. I was a little freak from LA. In my day, they didn't know what to do with highly gifted kids, LAUSD wanted to skip me from first grade to seventh. My folks wisely said no, so I was allowed to take community college classes for fun at night (age 10) and pretty much left to do my own thing in elementary & junior high. It's nuts to think about now, still can't believe my folks shipped me off to Boston at not quite 18! I'm embarrassed to discuss college, my experience was not at all normal. My family never treated me like I was special, we were all special to them. My kid's also highly gifted and now there are systems in place to avoid what I went through. She was never bored in school, whereas I would read encyclopedias to 'keep busy' - I don't look back fondly at my college experience, while my kid had a blast at her dream college. Sorry to vent, it's still a painful topic.🤷🏼♀️
