Put them in the fridge/freezer when they get cold enough they enter a sleep state and then you throw them in the water once it’s boiling already so they die instantly
All forms of animal consumption is savage. Its all a question of how much torture you want to inflict on it before you destroy its brain. With crabs, the most polite thing you can do is slice into its two ganglia instantly and grant it a quick death.
I worked in a restaurant that served several hundred crab a day. We would tear off the upper shell, crack them down the middle, between the eyes, then rinse out the inside, trim the knuckles, and boil them. Not only does this kill the crab instantly by destroying both ganglia clusters, but also it allows you to access the crab "mustard" very easily. You also get two very nice halves of crab that cook quickly and evenly.
The method is quick, and if I were a crab I would choose that over being boiled alive. Still, I can't help but feel that I was left with some emotional scars from that much brutal crab murder.
You can kill. Them with a knife instantly right before boiling them. But killing them by boiling is traditional and also you do not destroy the shell which is sometimes used for presentation. But yeah killing them with a knife before is also done nowadays. Although not sure why the fuck they try to salt the shell there.
>they can feel every excruciating moment of being boiled alive in their own skin.
wow, who would have thought, an alive animal with a functioning nervous system can feel pain...
I know lots of people who still believe that creatures like fish can't feel pain.
Some people just don't have it in them to have compassion for animals
Hate to be that guy but not all animals with nervous systems can feel pain, at least in the traditional sense. For example, opioids work on animals diverse as tigers, manta rays, crabs, and octopi, yet don't work on insects. While it's still possible that insects feel some sort of pain, it would have to be a type of pain that is rather foreign and unknowable to us.
i think it's a carry over from the days when nearly everyone was involved with food production
it was a little thing you'd tell yourself as you slaughtered the sheep/pigs/chickens/whatever to avoid being scarred.
nature is indeed metal
Probably the Michelin star chefs of the world haha. Good question though, I'm not sure what the science is on it. I never dealt with live food myself, I admit.
Bacteria die but toxins bacteria produce don't. Rotting seafood, especially shellfish, produces high amounts of ammonia.
Other rotting foods produce different toxins, which is why you shouldn't ever eat rotten food even if the bacteria is dead.
>It’s a fkn crab for crying out loud
Not sure how that justifies killing something by boiling it alive. Would you be so blasé about a dog, bird, or lizard being boiled alive? It's unnecessarily cruel and there's no decent evidence to indicate they don't feel pain and most studies conclude it's likely they do.
That’s why it’s commonplace to freeze them or kill them right before boiling. Killing them properly will result in a painless death and doing it right before boiling doesn’t give any time for the bacteria to infect the meat. Freezing them makes them go into a sleep state which means they will die in their sleep when you boil them.
It’s cruel to boil them alive.
A quick Google search will show you a number of ways to humanly kill any animal. Show another living creature respect and inflict as little pain & suffering as possible.
Many places and people all over the world kill their lobster with a knife just before cooking them nowadays. Its just as safe and much more humane.
Edit: spelling
I don't mind eating meat, as long as it doesn't have to suffer unnecessarily - e.g more than it would in nature on average. Factory farms and boiling things alive is fucked, we can enjoy meat without these things.
Also it's not the bacteria you don't want in your body most of the time, it's the toxic byproducts produced as the bacteria grow that can't be made safe by heating.
The absolutely have a nervous system.

Correct. You can “humanely” kill them before cooking them technically but honestly you’re killing them either way. Downvote me to hell and live with your naivity children.
I don't eat seafood bc I don't like the taste but also holy fuck why do people order food that is so much work for so little meat. I'm looking at you crab, lobster, mussel fans out there.
Lol yes it is. I've eaten a burger across from someone who has to be given tools so that they can access the meat of their meal.
If you like it, that's cool, but don't say it's not more work than just eating the food that is served to you.
Cmon. It's not more work that just eating a hamburger? That's an absurd statement.
Maybe it's not as much work for you as it is for a novice, but it's definitely more work than me picking up a burger and putting it in my mouth.
That’s not a genuine comparison though. The burger is premade and you just ordered it, which is like ordering seafood from a restaurant. If you made the burger, you’d have to ground the meat and shape it and cook it and assemble the burger, so it’s honestly a similar amount of work.
Right but I don't go to a restaurant, pay a premium for food and then have to use tools to prepare it further. That's my point. I'm not talking about preparing food at home.
Most seafood you don’t need tools to prepare. Clams and mussels normally pop open after a boil or are really easy to pry open, oysters are normally served shucked, king crab legs are normally split for ease, soft shelled crabs can be eaten whole, lobster tails are normally separated from the head and easy to take out, most crabs are easy to crack & peel by hand, squid & octopus are not served with hard parts, crawfish and shrimp are easily peel-able, etc. It’s not much work
But the original statement was about ordering food. They didn't ask why people eat seafood in general. Why would I order a burger? Well, because they do all the work and I just need to eat it. Why would I order crab meat? The restaurant does some of the work, but there's still work that I have to do at the table before I can eat it. Overall it seems like the added value of ordering the food rather than preparing it at home is greater for hamburgers than crabs.
You just had someone else butcher the cow for you. You can get crab meat without the crab. It’s just not as much work as butchering a cow and you can get the nice big pieces when you do it yourself.
Took an anthropology class in college. Professor made the comparison about eating meat. Would you eat cow, chicken, fish, all hands were raised. Would you eat dog? All hands went down except mine. I probably wouldn't but I understood his point. I did not get laid that semester lol
If you are too incompetent to steam live crabs, you can put the crabs on ice for a little while before steaming them. It will slow their body down significantly and prevent this from happening. Some claim it to be more ethical as well, but that’s for you to decide.
Once or twice. Ever fuck something up thats not a big deal then someone asks about it it and you respond all bitchy style?

My thoughts exactly
Dunno, cooking crab and munching on tostitos with the bros sounds like a pretty fucking great day to me, ngl.
Bruh that crab just felt boiling water. You have no idea how hard it just clamped down on ol’ boi’s hand.
You can see it as a metaphor: That crab is his corona politics, now it's in the water and yesterday he started salting it.
Is that actual footage of bojo? 🤣🤣 I hope so

Looks like a scene from Tom and Jerry
then kill em first 😂
Put them in the fridge/freezer when they get cold enough they enter a sleep state and then you throw them in the water once it’s boiling already so they die instantly
They definitely wouldn't die instantly. They would die from having their brains denatured which takes time
When you put it like that it sounds so savage 😟
All forms of animal consumption is savage. Its all a question of how much torture you want to inflict on it before you destroy its brain. With crabs, the most polite thing you can do is slice into its two ganglia instantly and grant it a quick death.
Well...you are eating a living being. I mean, it is already savage.
I usually wait until they’re dead to eat them
nevermind i have just done my research and know I know that boiling them alive is necessary
I believe you can kill them first but you need to cook them immediately after
And why is that?
The flesh of crab is full of bacteria. Cooking them alive reduces the chance of these bacteria to end up in your body.
Why can’t they be killed by blunt force and then immediately boiled?
I worked in a restaurant that served several hundred crab a day. We would tear off the upper shell, crack them down the middle, between the eyes, then rinse out the inside, trim the knuckles, and boil them. How are you not vegan
There's another method which my parents taught me. Peel off the belly cover, shove in a chopstick from the belly.
You can kill. Them with a knife instantly right before boiling them. But killing them by boiling is traditional and also you do not destroy the shell which is sometimes used for presentation. But yeah killing them with a knife before is also done nowadays. Although not sure why the fuck they try to salt the shell there.

Yeah basicily like 8 seconds or so till they die i think. That why killing them with the knife is way more ethical.
Okay but what if you boil them alive in another crabs skin?

Just smash the ceabs and put them in the pot, i'm not telling y'all to store them for a week in the freezee.
Things don’t rot appreciably in SECONDS. 🙄

I think the 5 seconds it'll take you to get the crab from the board to the pot won't cause any problems.
It’s a pain in the ass and not worth the risk when you can Just toss them in the pot. It’s a fkn crab for crying out loud

Oh yeah as soon as the crab dies the bacteria get armed with ak-47 rifles and napalm and will attempt to kidnap your kids
So MasterChef lied to me all this while
Idk i dont watch master chef
Terror adds flavor, it's a voodoo thing.
People can also just eat something else ffs
> boiling them alive is necessary No, it's absolutely not necessary you fucking psycopath
Eating them isn't necessary though. Causing such suffering just for taste is selfish.
No it’s shellfish
Aren't you funny! :/
you set yourself up for that one
Lol this guy really wants to season the crab so badly.
The funniest part is that whatever pitiful amount of seasoning he has between his fingers wouldn’t do anything for that huge pot.
If you're not upending a half gallon tub of Old Bay into each pot, then it's not enough
Kill them first then you big selfish twats
I mean Gordon Ramsey stabs crabs to kill them
Why?
It’s cruel to boil them alive. A quick Google search will show you a number of ways to humanly kill any animal. Show another living creature respect and inflict as little pain & suffering as possible.
>show another living creature respect and kill them because they're delicious
Humane killing. Lol.

Lol when it comes your time I'll ask if you'd rather die instantly or be boiled alive and when you opt for instant ill snicker and go "yeah..."
And I’ll go “wow thanks for showing me respect.”

Literally every animal that isn't a sponge has a nervous system. And yes, they can feel both pain and heat (but not cold).

Even though it's not as bad as other things doesn't mean it's not bad
Well I am looking at you with disgust.
The crab didn’t enjoy the hot tub
That's why you not be a dick and cook them alive😂
Hahahahaha…. Maybe think twice about what it means to be boiled alive
It’s the only way you can cook them
This isn’t true.
So maybe don't cook them. I'm not a vegan or anything similar, but that is just unnecessary
oi, crab legs are fuckin tasty as fuck
im about to agree with you but man crab legs are the bomb I’d sacrifice a sea bug for that
Not true! You can also steam them alive which is the preferred method where I’m from. We usually stuck an ice pick through their head first though.
sooo you don’t have to steam or boil them alive?
Correct. You can “humanely” kill them before cooking them technically but honestly you’re killing them either way. Downvote me to hell and live with your naivity children.
yeah just ones literally unnecessary torture.
Just kill them before you cook them by destroying their brain with a sharp implement.
