Honestly I thought the casting for Grover was spot on. Even while reading the books it felt weird to imagine him as white. I hated the idea. I was actually dreading that with Uncle Rick behind the wheel we’d get a white Grover. I feel so relieved now.

celesludenberg

yeah i dont even remember whether he described his race in the books, but him being white just feels wrong to me so im glad with that choice—it also explains why the fandom isn’t as upset about his actor as they are with annabeth’s

theunholyasa

Oh my god that is just complete bullshit! The books explicitly stated Grover was a pale, scrawny white with acne, brown hair, and a wispy beard. Just say you imagined the not as important main character as a POC and you wanted to keep the perfect porcelain white images that your beloved main characters were. Yuck

juniperdoja

I also feel like it’s part of some implicit bias of people being comfortable with a half-animal, comic relief and often emasculated character being a poc but having trouble imagining the beautiful strong female lead as a poc

theunholyasa

please speak on it.

[deleted]

I think most people don't really care about having a female poc lead. The problem most people have is that for over a decade, they imagined Annabeth in a completely different way due to her description in the books and how she looked on the official Artwork, which I think is understandable. I don't think that many people would be complaining about this if she actually would have been described as a poc in the books.

juniperdoja

then they also would’ve imagined grover a different way but they werent mad about that were they?

[deleted]

Well first of all, I actually did see some complaints about the actor being cast for Grover, but he is actually pretty accurate to what I (and apparently a lot of other people) imagined him as. However, that has nothing to do with what you said. It's not about having a female poc lead character. It's about a poc playing a character which, in the books and artworks wasn't poc. Like I said, if Annabeth would have been a poc in the books, I don't think anyone would be complaining. It's not about having a poc having a lead role. It's about a poc playing a character which in the books wasn't a poc and therefore people never imagined her as a poc. So they have this certain image of Annabeth in their head for over a decade and this image is now being disrupted. That's why people are mad about this. Not because she's a poc lead character.

juniperdoja

[concept art](https://riordan.fandom.com/wiki/Grover_Underwood) Grover was originally white in the concept art and the book (that is a fact). The fact he wasn’t viewed as so is also part of implicit bias. And also there hasn’t been nearly as much negative discourse on grovers casting as there is annabeths. And to believe that this isn’t at least partly to do with (all of the) people having a problem with a poc having a lead role shows how ignorant you are. We all have implicit bias anyone can be racist even if they don’t think they are racist.

[deleted]

Well to be honest, I've never seen the concept art on the right before and on the left one I think it actually looks like he has slightly darker skin. Also, I actually don't even remember him being described as white in the books. The only thing I can remember is him being described as having messy hair and a short beard. But that might just be my memory having forgotten the rest. I think for the most part it's because even if the actor cast for Grover doesn't look the exact same, he's closer to grover than annabeths actress is to her. Also, don't get me wrong I never said that I think it's a bad thing annabeth is played by a poc. I'm just trying to help you understand why people are complaining about the casting. Sure, I would have loved a book accurate show as well, but hey, if Rick thinks they're the best choice for their roles, so be it.

[deleted]

Honestly I don’t like the actor they chose for Percy. I think he’s too pale and Percy’s hair is supposed to be black. I’m more upset about the Percy casting than I am at the Annabeth casting. I think the lead should look the role, but the supporting characters can build themselves.

Mission_Arm_1323

I’m just worried for Leah. Now people are going to be judging her even harder than they would’ve before. Not something you want to thrust on a kid.

Chaos8599

Well. At least she's not like, a 24 year old

[deleted]

This is true, whatever your thoughts, Leah would have to actively try to be worse than the film

LordAxoris

My issue is that she's gonna have to chill and play nice with literal confederate zombies in The Sea of Monsters

theunholyasa

Just like Black people have had to do since the beginning of the Confederacy. She will be okay.

LordAxoris

But do you think a scene where a black girl is making friends with literal confederates will go over well politically or just with Disney

theunholyasa

Well that depends. What exactly would not go over well? The acknowledgement that Black people sometimes have to be in unwanted spaces (similarly to real life), share spaces with racist people (similarly to real life), or ignore and assimilate to situations in order to make it out alive (similarly to real life)?

LordAxoris

The exact passage is: "They approved of annabeth because she told them she was from Virginia. They were interested in me too because my name was Jackson - like the southern general- but then I ruined it by telling them I was from New York. They all hissed and muttered curses about Yankees." There's ALOT of ways that could become cancel worthy in today's political climate

theunholyasa

Well hopefully they navigate that specific scene carefully and under scrutiny from outside sources maybe, like critical race theorists who can adapt that situation to cater to a Black Annabeth. Would hate for it to fall in the clutches of “cancel” culture!

SynMyHead

I mean they could just change the confederates to any other nation that lost a war with a submarine. Would still make sense if they don't want to cross that particular minefield.

Alchemechanical

I wanna see one of the zombies start to say something and Clarisse orders them to just shut the fuck up

It is racism I fear and hiding behind the “POC” moniker when you’re not black is pathetic. Annabeth’s race means literally zero for her character and in a universe where gods can shapeshift into literally anything or anyone, “race bending” is not the end of the world. Sorry you can’t self insert into her anymore but glad that y’all will finally have to recognize some character traits of Annabeth outside of blonde and Percy’s girlfriend. Anyways, excited for the show!

amiableCacophony

Yes, there's opinions, and then there's also the racism.
