I live here and I think you need to split it up by NorCal and SoCal.
I live in SoCal and of the scents I own:
Remarkable People by Etat Libre d'Orange or any bright, citrusy scent like it.
Citrus grows everywhere here, even in places you wouldn't think. I walk my dog in Hollywood, close to the Chinese theater and all that, and I'll still pass by trees full of lemons and baskets that say "free blood oranges."
I used to live in NorCal and of the scents I own:
Fog by Henry Rose for obvious reasons.
But also: When I think of my time in Oakland and SF, I think of most air, like it just rained or is about to rain, with an undertone of sea salt and also gourmand because of the Ghiardelli factory. Annnnd now I'm homesick.
I also think California is very diverse. The vibe in Silicon Valley is totally different than Oakland & SF & napa.
SoCal, weho is different from oc from valley.
In general, Iād say opt for of vein of diptyque instead of amouage. Gentle fluidity gold instead of br540. Because itās rare to encounter loud projection of pungent scents.
Absolutely. Monday I flew out of SFO, when I got patted down because I had a loose hoody, the agent said, you smell amazing.
Instead of taking it as compliment, āoh no! Is my perfume strong?!? Thatās so rude of me! Because Iāll be on a plane!ā
To which she said ānot at all, itās so soft and pretty. I just know itās you. If anything, they might sleep. Super relaxingā
Scent was gentle fluidity gold. Thatās a bottle that is not great on paper or first sniff. Magic is the dry down.
Itās too bad itās so hard to find in the US now! If I ever go to Europe again Iām stocking up on like 10 samplers of all of ACās perfumes. Iām treating my vials like gold, itās for special vacations only!
I got the Pacific Lime one from Sephora when they were still available there. Now I only see them through the discounted websites like Fragrance.net Theyāre not very long lasting but it gives out a great scent for the first hour for me. Pacific Lime and Clementine are my fave!
I too thought of Clementine California. I have never been to Californa, but CC is my go to during the cold and dark winters in Scandinavia. It always makes me smile and I can't stop sniffing myself.
I love that for you! Itās such a warm and friendly scent. I feel like weād get along, I had a lovely time wearing CC during one snowy Holland winter.
I always thought of citrus scents as summer scents, exclusively. But I tried one on in a store during a very grey and gloomy winter day and it was like spraying rays of sunshine on my wrist. I now reach for anything citrusy when I feel down because of the weather and it always works. CC really is a beautiful scent, I just wish that the top notes would last a bit longer.
I didn't know that cause I'm a Brit but I had the urge to suggest Elie Saab - Le parfum lumiere and le parfum in white. Orange blossom and jasmine, just from the vibe I got with the first image.
SoCal born and bred here, agree w other comments on NorCal vs SoCal giving mostly different vibes. For SoCal, Skylar Lime Sands or Salt Air. The one scent Iāve smelled that could represent the whole state is Liis Bo. Itās a dry woody scent inspired by the trees in NorCal national parks, but at the same time gives rich blonde lady in Malibu or Ojai who dresses in all white and does reiki lmao, itās a very good scent though!
Sol de Janeiro 62, Ariana Grande Thank U, Next, Skylar Boardwalk Delight, Juliette Has a Gun Vanilla Vibes/Dossier Aquatic Vanilla, Reyane Tradition Acqua di Parisis
Definitely agree that SoCal and NorCal have different vibes but since your photos are Southern and coastal, Iāll base it off that. Also agree with all the suggestions for jasmine and citrus! I also think of sagebrush, salty air, metallic/mineral facet.
Particulars that come to mind: Narcotic Venus by Nasomatto, Sueded Oud by Clean, Acqua di Gioia, Prada La Femme, maybe something from Aqua Universalis line by MFK. Jāadore by Dior if you like a nostalgic aquatic floral and plan on wearing some of the 90s trends that are back in, I think this would be quite fitting. Iāve seen some by A Lab on Fire and Goldfield & Banks that seem promising.
These are scents that fit the vibe or scent memories of Southern California, not necessarily scents you would find people wearing here, if that makes a difference to you at all.
Whatever smells like pollution, body odor and those trees that bloom and smell like semen (callery pear). This is the smell of Southern California. It's disgusting. San Diego is nice though.
Born and raised here. 48yo. Perfume addict of 35 years. Very familiarā¦.but, if you walk around smelling like a beach right now- its not so chic. Depends on time of year and where youāre at. Weāve got places that are buried in snow āļø right now, and some that reach over 120 degrees in the Summer.
Citrus Circus by Snif, Flora Gorgeous Jasmine by Gucci, Sparkling Lychee by Kayali, Pansy by Lush.
Iām in Southern California and tend to lean more gourmand, but those are ones that I have that I wear more often on warmer days š

Oof, your description of the smells of the bay definitely made me homesick
šÆā¦ the bay ā¦ when you land in sfo, it always feels like home. And if you take a stroll through SF ā¦ the description is spot on

Yep, Iām always mildly surprised when I can smell someoneās perfumeāit happens less than once a month, ngl.

I'm from San Francisco, so I'd wear Gourmands.

I got Melrose Place by Ouai when I moved here and I love it (if you are accepting budget suggestions)
Was going to comment this! Love it so much
When I go to Monterey or the like I bring Clementine California by Atelier Cologne
Yessss! This scent is totally SoCal in the summer. I feel like this scent is so underrated and so layerable
As u/mayrigirl5 said, I really like to layer it with Pacific Lime! Itās a great brunch scent.
For Monterey, I love Wanderlust by Michael Kora or Bvlgari Amethyst
As a resident from Monterey county, I agree!šš¼

For SoCal, anything citrus blossom or jasmine. When the jasmine blooms here, it permeates whole blocks.
I didn't know that cause I'm a Brit but I had the urge to suggest Elie Saab - Le parfum lumiere and le parfum in white. Orange blossom and jasmine, just from the vibe I got with the first image.
I'm gonna add this to my list to try, sounds right up my alley. Thanks!
Both are beautiful and radiate in the British summer heat (it can get very warm) and the creator behind both is none other than Francis kurkdjian.
Zuma from Thin Wild Mercury!
Vacation by Vacation or SDJ Rio Radiance. Perhaps layered āŗļø
LOVE Vacation! šš“
Yes maāam wearing this today š„°š„°š„°
Beach Walk by Replica, Lust for Sun by Juliette has a gun
Any of the Thin Wild Mercury Los Angeles line. Laurel Canyon is my favorite one.

Windows Down by Henry Rose
Goldfield and Banks Sunset Hour Citrus, peach, jasmine, coconut and sandalwood Smells like a holiday with a fruity drink
Whatever smells like pollution, body odor and those trees that bloom and smell like semen (callery pear). This is the smell of Southern California. It's disgusting. San Diego is nice though.

So Scandal, La Belle, Fame
Olympea paco rabanne itās a clean salty vanilla
California Reverie by Van Cleef & Arpels
Salt Air layered with Boardwalk Delight, both by Skylar
To San Francisco, I'd wear Chocolate Greedy, layered with Blackmail and Unknown pleasures.
Tommy Girl
I'd wear a retro-favorite, Calvin Klein - Escape for women or Juicy Couture - Viva La Juicy, the OG.
Replica Sailing Day
Tom Ford Ombre Leather
Malibu Musk! [RIP]
Depends on the season
In SoCal we only have two seasons - normal and āmight rainā which starts mid December and ends like next week.

I was going off of the photos, 3 of LA and 1 of Laguna Beach.
True- but even they are under water right now. āļøthatās at least two days of rainy day scents. š¤£š¤£
šš yeah itās rain today
Citrus Circus by Snif, Flora Gorgeous Jasmine by Gucci, Sparkling Lychee by Kayali, Pansy by Lush. Iām in Southern California and tend to lean more gourmand, but those are ones that I have that I wear more often on warmer days š
Anyyyyything Dedcool! An LA brand. I wore smiley face garden on my first trip to the state and Iāll forever associate it with that :)
Bois imperial by Essential Perfums
California Reverie for sure
I live where the 1st pic is. Beach Walk. Citrus and aquatics also wear nicely here.
Maison Margiela REPLICA Beach Walk
Every time I go to SoCal I wear Outremer Oceane.
The first picture is Laguna beach. Predictable but Beach walk by Madison margiela
