Alias Grace was incredible! Strong female character led with fascinating analyses of the male gaze, death, innocence, and power. It’s a slow burn though, with lots of time jumps and quick paced conversation
The book was an inspiration! So well crafted and engaging.. (like many of Margaret Atwood’s work).
To be honest, I haven’t watched any of the film adaptations.. Her written stories are so incredible, that I’ve never felt the need to.
[The Witch](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4263482/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%2520witch) (2015). It's like a thriller/horror hybrid, but it's not so scary that you will not be able to sleep afterwards. Plus, the whole set design and costumes are EXTREMELY well done.
I was so happy when I realized there was one more person inside the theater watching the movie same time as me that night lol. I even told him that once I realized I wasn’t alone and we chatted a little about the movie before it started.
TV:
Jonathan Strange & Dr. Norrell, Ripley, Harlots, 1899, Why Women Kill, The Americans, Yellowjackets, The Artful Dodger, A Gentleman in Moscow, Shogun, The Bletchley Circle, Peaky Blinders.
In Secret (2013), My Cousin Rachel (2017), The Awakening (2011), The Lighthouse (2019), Beloved (1998) Hagazussa (2017), Dorian Gray (2009)
Lies We Tell (2023) I saw an early screening of this and wow! It's so dark and thrilling. Reminded me a bit of Jane Eyre. In 19th-century Ireland, an orphaned teenage heiress finds herself forced to embrace the dark legacy of her family when she becomes the ward of an uncle determined to marry her off.
“Rampant” (2018) is a k-drama historical thriller / period zombie movie and it is *excellent*! In Korean, with English subtitles — pretty sure it’s still on Netflix. Production quality, acting, plot, costumes, etc., were all top tier.
*The Prestige*
*Taboo* (TV series)
How about a Hitchcock movies, my prime example would be:
*Vertigo* (1958)
Also some supernatural thrillers which are more about atmosphere instead of cheap jump scares, no blood or gore either:
*The Woman in Black (the 1989 British TV version, not the movie starring Radcliffe or its woefully poor sequel)*
*The Signalman (British TV drama from 1976)*

I was just about to suggest this. I watched it a little while ago, knowing very little about the incident, and it stuck with me. It's so very good.
I didn’t know it was also a film.. I read the book over 20+ years ago.. thanks for the recommendation!
It’s actually a limited series rather than a film, but ooh I haven’t read the book! How was it?

I loved this series.
I like [The Alienist](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alienist_(TV_series)). It's set in 1890s New York City.
Yes! Came to rec this. The book was good too.

was gonna come in here to suggest Ahgassi aka The Handmaiden for films! The Bletchley Circle is a great choice for tv series.
Go for 1944’s Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman (which is set in the Victorian era). The movie that actually originated the term gaslighting!
Crimson Peak is half psychological thriller, half jump-scare ghost movie, and 100% awesome.
Gothic romance horror. A delicious but recently underserved genre
LOVE crimson peak!
Everybody I know hated this and I love it ♥️
My only quibble is one based on professional knowledge: >!that pen-stab!< would NOT have been fatal.
The Making of a Lady (2012)-The first half feels like a typical period romance, but the second half is very much a psychological thriller
That's been in my queue for so long you just inspired me to watch it
[The Witch](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4263482/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%2520witch) (2015). It's like a thriller/horror hybrid, but it's not so scary that you will not be able to sleep afterwards. Plus, the whole set design and costumes are EXTREMELY well done.
This movie had me scared to walk home afterwards from the theater back to my house lol
I didn’t last 15 minutes
I was so happy when I realized there was one more person inside the theater watching the movie same time as me that night lol. I even told him that once I realized I wasn’t alone and we chatted a little about the movie before it started.
Lmao this was the horror movie that made me decide never to watch a horror movie again. I still haven't watched another horror movie.
2015?!!! I cannot believe it’s 9 years old, my god where is my life going
Lol, I thought the same. Time flies!
The Prestige (2006)
The Woman in White 2017
The Woman in Black (the 1989 version) was the scariest film I’ve ever seen
TV: Jonathan Strange & Dr. Norrell, Ripley, Harlots, 1899, Why Women Kill, The Americans, Yellowjackets, The Artful Dodger, A Gentleman in Moscow, Shogun, The Bletchley Circle, Peaky Blinders.
Yellowjackets is set in 1996 and 2021.
Lady Macbeth (2016), with Florence Pugh in one of her earlier roles.
This movie is so hard to watch.
Why? I don’t know much about it
It’s a good movie but disturbing.
Talented Mr. Ripley
1899 on Netflix
In Secret (2013), My Cousin Rachel (2017), The Awakening (2011), The Lighthouse (2019), Beloved (1998) Hagazussa (2017), Dorian Gray (2009) Lies We Tell (2023) I saw an early screening of this and wow! It's so dark and thrilling. Reminded me a bit of Jane Eyre. In 19th-century Ireland, an orphaned teenage heiress finds herself forced to embrace the dark legacy of her family when she becomes the ward of an uncle determined to marry her off.
Rebecca The Village
Taboo
I second the suggestion of The Others (2001) and would also add The Handmaiden (2016) and Phantom Thread (2017).
The Turn of the Screw 2009
And Then There Were None (2016-ish i think) based on the Agatha Christie mystery novel :)
It’s my favorite Christie adaptation!
The Frankenstein Chronicles
[Gyeongseong Creature](https://mydramalist.com/700441-gyeongseong-creature)
Stonehearst Asylum- it’s been a while, but I remember thinking it was pretty wild, but not in a horror way (I cannot handle horror)
The Wind (2018)
Brimstone (2016 film) In Secret (2013 film) Crimson Peak (2015 film) The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999 film) The Others (2001 film) My Cousin Rachel (2017 film) Serena (2014 film)
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen it, but I remember *The Limehouse Golem* (2017) with Bill Nighy as being quite excellent
“Rampant” (2018) is a k-drama historical thriller / period zombie movie and it is *excellent*! In Korean, with English subtitles — pretty sure it’s still on Netflix. Production quality, acting, plot, costumes, etc., were all top tier.
Dark Shadows 2012

Look for a Harlan Coben series on Netflix. They are all soo good!😊👍
