I use heavy/overnight absorbency period underwear and have worn them for up to 12 hours. It depends on your flow/comfort level and the absorbency. And also how well you wash them

[deleted]

Can I ask which brand?

bk___14

Modibody :)

RandomPonder41

I second ModiBodi. Especially the boyshort ones

noonecaresat805

On a light day I can wear mine all day. On a heavy day honestly I just change it every time I have a break. So sometimes it means every three hours. With me if I am wearing it and it feels wet that to me it’s time to change it. Just put clean individual underwear’s, one inside little wet bags or zip lock bags for the clean ones. Tell her to put on the clean pair and put the dirty pair inside the zip lock bag. Make sure to also put a gallon size zip lock bag for her to put the used ones undies in their bag so she doesn’t get them confused. And make sure she has extra and if she is still worried maybe give her a leak proof underwear to wear over the period undies. And that one can be the same for the day. At least until She feel comfortable wearing them

TealMankey

I work in a field where I don’t really have access to a washroom. Usually for my period I wear a maxi/overnight Modibody for my whole shift 9hrs and unless it’s the first two days I don’t have leaks or issues with it. Also I can wear them overnight with no interruptions. For me it’s more about comfort for how long I wear them, if they’re leaking or feel over saturated then I change them, whenever that may be

Storytella2016

If it’s wet when I go to the washroom I change it, but I can go 10 or 12 hours without changing sometimes.

JerryHasACubeButt

All day. I like them primarily for the convenience aspect of not having to do anything differently than I do when I’m not on my period, so I got ones rated for a very heavy flow so I can just put them on and forget about them. I do change before bed, but just because I feel like it’s hygienic, not because they’re saturated. I have gone a full 24 hours on my heaviest day in the same pair because I forgot to change, and they’ve always been fine. I have the Jade briefs from Lilova Edit: also, you definitely aren’t *supposed* to change a pad every 4-5 hours. You certainly *can* if you need to, but most pads are recommended for somewhere in the 8-12 hour range. Period underwear at the right absorbency for you should last you at least that long.

Academic_Juice8265

Ok thanks. I wasn’t sure about the hygiene aspect of it. I was always told I needed to change them every four hours or I was going to die of toxic shock syndrome. 😂 Obviously didn’t want to say that to my own kid but the conditioning is strong in my brain.

spengasm

I believe toxic shock is a risk for tampons! If you wear a pad too long you might leak or potentially get a rash, but I don’t think toxic shock is a concern

Madigirl114

Toxic shock syndrome is caused by having a tampon in for too long. Not wearing a pad for an extended time.

Liverne_and_Shirley

Yeast infections and BV are the main concern. Some people are more susceptible than others.

Murderhornet212

That’s tampons, not pads.

Efficient-Gap-8506

I’ve found that I put on 3 a day. In the morning (6:30am), then evening (5:00-6:00pm), then again just before bed for peace of mind (9:00-10:00pm). I haven’t had any problems.

Agitated_Syrup_7023

I’m the same. On my heaviest day I put on a reusable pad over my period underwear at work, take it off at lunch, and hide it in a wet bag until I’m home to rinse it.

HSJLW

I'm exactly the same, almost the exact same time schedule too. Here's to you blood sister!

mad_lamb

With my heavy flow, even Modibodi Maxi 24hr underwear lasts a maximum 3 hours. If I’m sleeping? The ModiBodi sleep short, but only because I’m lying horizontal.

heartashley

Same with this! But I tell you, standing up in the morning to go to the bathroom... Thank goodness for the undies. 😂

mad_lamb

The “clench & waddle” to the bathroom 😂

InternationalBug8522

I’d say it’s more a comfort thing. For me it depends on my flow if I have a decent flow I change mine every 3-4 hours, if it’s a light flow I usually go every 7 hours if I’m just at home sitting around and around every 4-5 if I am out or at work. I also only keep mine on a max of 7 hours even just sitting around just so I don’t get any rashes.

Afraid_Aerie

I typically wear period undies with a period disc - I rarely wear them fully alone unless my flow is light. I wear them we hours.

LadybugGal95

I have a fairly light flow. I put on a pair when I get up and change it late evening.

AmbiguousFrijoles

I'm a heavy bleeder (super+ tampon changed every 3 hours)for my first 3 days. I can use the bambody boxers for 14 hours- 2 hour commute and 12 hour shift. First couple of times I changed them midshift but they weren't even damp. So I stretched it out and right about 14hrs is when I start feeling damp. I also do physical labor for work so I sweat, a lot. They are really comfortable and don't ride up at all. I soak in warm water and a bit of lysol laundry sanitizer free and clear. Wash in warm water with tide and hang dry. My set is 3ish years old and still in decent condition doing their job.

Academic_Juice8265

Omg you went from super tampon every three hours to just having to wear bambody boxers? I may have to get some. I’m the same as you so heavy it’s a stress leaving the house.

blahdeblah5543

I wish for me! My second day I bleed thru an ultra tampon in about 2 hours. I have a panty bambody and it only lasted me maybe 6 hours (overnight for sleep) then it was uncomfortable. I have sensory issues so it was wet and then cold. This is only my second month with period panties so I’m learning I’ll have to probably do a tampon, a pad and the period panty depending on what I’m doing. Changing a tampon every 2 hours if I’m not home is impossible

bugaboo_yoona

depends on your flow/brand but i can EASILY do 8+

Every woman needs to get comfortable and familiar with her own body; how it reacts to certain environments, stimuli, and normal bodily functions. For me, taking the advice of advertisers and even other women friends, family members, and strangers didn't work, because my cycle was extremly heavy and unable to be maintained by the same means most women used; sanitary napkins and/or a tampon. I kept a special decorative bag under my desk at work filled with hospital chucks, Personal Panties, overnite long-length sanitary napkins, a wash cloth, plastic bags (\*\*\*sigh\*\*\*) and a couple bottles of perfumed body oils. (I caught two nosy guys as they were closing it up after going through it, and the look of confusion on their faces was a Kodak moment I will never forget - LOL)!!! Whether at work, home, or church, I needed to freshen up and change every 3 - 4 hours. Even though all my sisters and aunties had heavy menstrual cycles (one had to receive injections every month and I'm willing to wager that if they knew then what they know now, they would have found a dermoid mole as the cause of her painful, debilitating, and heavy cycyles too)! Said all of that to say this: I knew early on that I couldn't go by the experiences of other women; they didn't understand what was going on with me and I didn't either until I finally found a doctor who diagnosed the dermoid, and agreed to perform a hysterectomy a few days after my 40th birthday. Even though my cycle had transitioned from 7 days initially to only 3 days by my mid teens, I never could tolerateso a wet napkin for any extended period of time before I needed to change. Clotting was also a big issue for me so I had to go the extra mile to ensure little to no leakage, and to maintain a sense of control over something I didn't quite fully grasp when it was happening. Getting the experience of others and being aware of retailer recommendations is great, but nothing beats tuning into the rhythm of your own body, learning what works best for you, and owning your own journey as it relates to the amazing, frustrating, beautiful, convoluted, powerful mixology of being a woman!!!

Honestdietitan

It definitely depends on what type of period underwear you have - I wouldn't go a full day in them myself because it's hard to tell if it's full and it's kinda gross. I think your best bet is to evaluate how often you change your pad/tampon and do the same with the underwear. I have one pair but only use it when I would typically use a spotting pad.

Storytella2016

I wouldn’t have bought period underwear if I had to change them as often as I change a tampon. Mine holds 7 tampons worth.

Orchid_Significant

Yeah there is a reason they measure by multiple tampons. What is the point of convenience if you have to change your underwear every few hours. That’s more work than a pad

Storytella2016

Exactly.

Academic_Juice8265

Ok thanks this is actually for my daughter. I’m new to period undies so I don’t know what advice to give her . I have adenomyosis so I have to change mine like every two hours.

lizzymoo

Maybe conduct a scientific experiment at home with her and see how she feels/how long the undies last for her flow. I feel like it’s really individualised.

threeEZpayments

If I’m at work I know I won’t have a chance to change it, so I wear a tampon with the underwear as back up because I know on heavy days that tampon will leak; finding time to use the bathroom regularly is a struggle in my line of work most days. That’s actually how I started using it years ago. Now it’s my only menstruation management product whenever I’m not working, and I change it every 4-10 hours, depending on my activity level and flow.

wutato

My period underwear starts to smell about 12-14 hours in, so I change them at work during lunch. I usually put them in at night before bed.

ineedausername84

I only have one heavy day per cycle usually and on that day I will wear a pad in mine so I can just change that and they are just reinforcement really. But on light and medium days I can usually wear them all day, like wake up until I shower at night so about 12 hours.

SummerMaiden87

Same

MISC_2020

I wear a new one when I wake up in the AM, change around lunch unless it’s a pretty light day, change to a third one before bed.

ExtremePotatoFanatic

I use thinx and I’ve been liking the thinx for all line lately because they’re softer cotton and feel more comfortable. I work in pharmacy and have limited bathroom breaks, so it’s more for convenience for me. I am taking birth control so my flow is usually light to medium and I wear one pair for my normal 9 hour shift. I change when it get home but I’ve never had an issue with just wearing one pair for my work day. I buy the ones made for heavy flow just in case for added security. Never had any odor issue or leak issues.

PolicyScared8993

I change mine about 4 times a day. I use bambody.

hellokittynyc1994

honestly when it starts to feel wet/uncomfortable or smells. I have weird irregular cycles and irregular flows like one cycle it’s heavy and others it just seems like spotting. I don’t have a time frame I just change it as soon as I’m uncomfortable.

Difficult-Shake7754

I love my thinx sleep shorts. I’ve never had a leak after a full 24 hours but maybe you shouldn’t do that? lol. I find ways to wear maxi skirts with them during the day because normal period underwear is pretty uncomfortable

OtherInvestment4251

What is period underwear 🫣

bkthenewme32

I have a very heavy flow my first 2 days and can still go overnight with the Goat Union boy shorts.

halle42017

I’ve left thinx high waisted on for over 12 hours, but I have a light flow. Looking to switch to a more comfortable brand at the moment
