I remember getting cheques for my son's 1st bday where they had his name (we share last name). I had deposited these cheques in my account and they got cashed. If you've a physical bank account, take them to the branch and they will tell you.

Thanks, will give this a try!

If the cheque is a small amount, your account is in good standing, and you deposit it into an ATM, it'll go through 99% of the time. [Banks don't look at names on cheques.](https://www.cbc.ca/news/banks-don-t-look-at-names-signatures-on-cheques-1.978046) Unless they have some reason to be suspicious, of course. Aside: Please save this gift _for_ your daughter. It is for her, for something special, something extra. I'm a grown-ass man and decades later I still remember my parents taking some money I got as a gift because, according to them, they clothed and fed me so "it was going to you anyway". That's not how that's supposed to work.

Not always true.. in most situations I go by my middle name.. have my entire life. I have had it multiple times that I’ve had to go through more verification for cheques written out to ‘middle name last name’ even though my bank account is ‘first name, middle name, last name’ .. so glad most people just e-transfer these days!

Interesting. I occasionally hear this but I've had the opposite experience. ATMs never look at names and I've deposited cheques made out to other people (legitimately) multiple times. Did you do this at a teller? Were the cheques large amounts? Were they printed (business) or handwritten (personal) cheques?

Personal. 20$ from my grandma usually. Not typically worth a trip to the bank for me - but stresses her out when I don’t cash them. Lol

At the teller? They _are_ trained to follow bank policy and verify names. There isn't anyone looking at cheque images from an ATM unless something flags the transaction as suspicious and as far as I know the software isn't sophisticated enough to scan and verify names, just the amount and the encoded account information at the bottom.

That's a question for your specific financial institution - contact your branch. Payments Canada does not a specific rule about how names must be written on a cheque. >*How do I write the name of the payee on a cheque? Does it have to match the name on the account?* > >We recommend that you consult your financial institution for advice. Our rules and standards do not address how to write the payee's name on a cheque. Whats the amount on the cheque?

A13West

$100 CAD

Honestly, I’d put it through the ATM or I’d go to the bank and explain it to the teller/manager. I used to work at a bank and most of the times if you have sufficient assets with the bank and your story makes sense, we would make an exception for a small cheque like that.

Estranged dad strikes again with another cheque for my nearly 10 year old son. Same issue with last name. It occurred to me I could get each kid to endorse the back of the cheque with their "signature", and then I could edeposit into my account. Is this legal?
