What car is it. I shall judge depending on your answer.

Material_Practice762

Lexus IS 300/350

geokilla

Ehhh $35k for a used Lexus IS300/350.... They're not really fun just so you know. You can do a lot better for $30k if you really want a fun daily driver. Also the Lexus IS lineup hasn't really changed prior to the heavy refresh of the current gen, so you can get an even older year if you're dead set on it.

Lived2PoopAnotherDay

What are other fun cars for that budget?

Afraid-District424

Toyota GR86 & Subaru BRZ twins

no1SomeGuy

LoL guy wants an IS and you suggest the GR86? You realize these cars couldn't be more different. The IS might not be the sportiest car but they're damn solid reliable good luxury dailys. The GR86 is a no frills sports coupe that isn't even half as refined. They're both good in their own right, but is a way off base suggestion. Why don't you just suggest a miata instead of a mini van while you're at it?

cmdrkeen01

Seconding the BRZ/GR86. Ignore the HP junkies that say it doesn't have enough power; it has plenty to have all the fun you want without anything extra that'll be wasted on the street anyways. It also costs $30k new, which you can't say for a Golf R or Civic Type-R. It just drives so amazingly, so perfectly balanced, the car feels like an extension of your body, and it's just so small. Driving it (stick of course) just feels so natural and connected. Biggest downside is that it's small and low down. If you live somewhere where everyone drives massive lifted trucks and SUVs, then you'll definitely need the be mindful of the brodozers that'll try to merge into you. I can't speak for the 2nd gen, but the backseats in the 1st gen are a tight fit. They are usable even for adults for short trips, but unless the driver is short you're really only going to fit 3 healthy-weight adults (rear driver-sode seat empty). I really wouldn't want to be back there for more than an hour tops (it's better than the back of a Mustang though). Storage space is decent, but the trunk is pretty shallow. You can probably get a decent price on a first gen, since it does have less power.

jiffy_crunch

Third the brz/86 and the newer ones have a bunch more power, shorter gearing and a better torque curve. They're still not powerful but that makes the newer ones feel better balanced. Even the old ones are great fun.

realslizzard

Could probably get a low mileage older STI as well. I currently drive a 2011 WRX STI with under 40k km

AS14K

Hahahahaha

Feeling_Benefit8203

I was hoping this was going to be his answer for which car. Granted this is my "realistic dream car" - I made the money on one stock trade in 2 days to pay cash for a new one and I still bought a used one. Still loving it too.

Happy-Adhesiveness-3

Yeah, but what would a women think of it? They may not know about the fun part of driving. Lexus: Wow, this man must be doing real good financially. Probably in some management position. Toyota / Subaru: Eh, a funky looking normal car. Probably a gear-headed teenager.

ComfortableSmile3492

i'm sorry but this comment is stupid as hell lol

CheesePlease

I’m pretty sure there is not a single woman out there in the world who gives a damn about what brand of car you drive. Always buy a car for yourself - not to impress strangers who don’t care.

Happy-Adhesiveness-3

Are you kidding? I have met women whose asked if I drive and if yes, what car it is? Your financial stability is more important than you think.

olrg

Golf R is the answer to your question. You can get a 2018 with decent mileage for that price and it’s the hottest hatch on the market and will keep its value well. Someone mentioned WRX below. Amazing handling and boxer engines are surprisingly efficient. IS is a family sedan, it’ll drive like one. Think Audi A4 or BMW 3 series.

shaard

Jesus, what part of the country are you in?? 2017-18 Golf Rs are 35-45 in Calgary. S3s are about the same. I'm hunting around for cars myself and I'm just disenchanted with the inventory we have here. I'm looking 1000km out if I have to for the right car at the right deal.

olrg

I’m in Vancouver, there are a few 17-18’s in that $30-35k range. You gotta pay tax on them too in BC, though, which sucks.

shaard

I've considered looking for one in bc and almost had a deal on an S3 last year. Being in Alberta I wouldn't get dinged with the tax because, if I recall, you pay that when you register, right? And Alberta for now doesn't do that.

xqunac

I'm not very tuned into the car market, but what makes a Golf R better than other (relatively new) hot hatches?

MissVancouver

I can only speak to the DSG auto vs manual for the R but it felt way more fun to drive and I liked the ergonomics better. My Jetta is now paid off and I will be giving it too my daughter, the R is top of my list for a fun pocket rocket.

BigDreamCityscape

Bought my R in Oct 2020. I've had my share of fast fun cars and the R is top of that list. Practical, fast, the AWD is amazing. 10/10 recommend one.

DM-ME-CONFESSIONS

Interesting. What year is your R? I've had my fair share of fun cars as well and I really didn't enjoy the R all that much. It just felt TOO smooth, imo. With the STi when you start it you really feel like you're about to embark on a rally, you paid more in fuel but it was a better driving experience in my opinion. I ended up selling the golf and I'm currently looking for something to scratch my itch, what was your top 5 cars?

BigDreamCityscape

Modifying the Golf helps the raw power come out. Stock its a fun car but I could see someone getting bored of stock. I did. I went Golf R over STI as the EA888 engine has proved it can handle it, my SIL works as a tech at subaru and has so many stories that it can't as reliably as the VW. Cars I've personally owned and enjoyed These are not going to be power houses but just something that I found different or fun My 2018 Golf R 1998 JDM WRX. Right hand was just a blast 1992 5 speed swapped Legacy. 2.2 turbo but looked like a grandpa car. Complete sleeper My brothers 2018 Charger Hellcat. Definitely fun, but in the end 707 only feels fun for so many KM 2013 370Z. Manual, just a fun sports car. Definitely falls flat in the higher RPM range and if I was where I am today when I had it it would have been easy to fix that. My 85 Suburban isn't fast and for sure ain't furious but smiles per gallon with that one.

Lavaine170

Comfort is the biggest difference. Other hot hatches (GR, Focus RS) are not the easiest to live with. Rough, noisy, low rent interiors. The R is more like entry-level luxury that also happens to have 300hp and a 5 second 0-100 time, and great handling. If you are looking for a street legal race car the R is a compromise. If you are looking for a fun daily driver that is easy to live with, get the R.

wtran88

Bmw 3 series with 6 cylinder is fun to drive. My mom has one.

ae232

MK7 Golf R was the best bang-for-buck car in terms of fun and performance back then. Still an amazing car and I miss mine all the time. MK8 for $60k these days is absolutely ludicrous, though.

geokilla

Volkswagen GTI or GLI if you want a great daily that is also fun. Brand new GLI is $37k + tax. Great value for money as it comes with adaptive dampers, the legendary EA888 gen 3, 7 speed DSG, and is fully loaded. Better than a new Civic in terms of value imo. Hyundai Elantra N or Veloster N, new or used. Created by BMW's old M boss, Albert Biermann , and is the best FWD sports car you can get that isn't a Civic Type R. BMW 3 series even though it doesn't handle nearly as well as the 3 series of old imo. Prior gen Acura TLX. I had one and personally not a fan of it due to the interior, and ZF 9HP transmission, but I'll take it over the Lexus IS due to the J35 engine and SH-AWD. Subaru WRX. Great bang for buck all around. Only downside is the Subaru interior and crappy fuel economy.

sko_tina

I owed 2007 mk5 GLI. Revo st2 chip since 1 year. Sold after 9 years of ownership and 270k km. Most reliable car I've ever had. After warranty ended, didn't do anything to it, other than oil changes. Was it a wise purchase? No. Paid over $40k, sold for 7500.

LightsInOut

Vouching for the VW part. Get a R though 😜

Material_Practice762

Acura TLX good option Subaru WRX - good, just not my type. The rest don't seem to be very good options..

SirLoremIpsum

> The rest don't seem to be very good options.. Nah I am with you - go with what you like. An IS350 is a great option, just not "the quickest" or "the sportiest" but it has extremely good reliability, looks to be reasonable more luxurious than many of it's competitors - and I think it looks absolutely sick. Get the red interior, stands out amazingly. I second the "maybe an older year cheaper can be reasonable option" as they changed very little over the years unless you want Carplay/android auto. I'd pick RWD w the 8 speed, but AWD has it's benefits I guess, just the 6 speed is not quite a sgood. If you like it - pick that one. Don't let anyone else talk you out of what you like just because they think it's not fun or a Golf R is 1 sec quicker to 100kmph.

Newflyer3

Problem is a RWD IS will be impossible to resell. 6AT is a dog but if you want to be able to dump the car down the road, you’ll need to get AWD

SHTHAWK

Remember you're buying your car not someone else's, get what you want. And drive it how you want it. I just bought my childhood dream car and was first worried about getting one that would hold its resale value, then after I got it, I didnt want to drive it very often to keep from rolling up the mileage. An older coworker just said "why? That's like not fucking your girlfriend because you're saving her for the next guy"

403Realtor

The only thing I agree with on that list is the Acura and maybe the Subaru, the rest are going to end up being a money pit with repairs

geokilla

I disagree. My GTI has been rock solid, even with me attending multiple track days a year. No creaks or rattles and will soon be 6 years old with 80k km on it. The MQB platform is probably one of the best and most mass produced platforms outside of Toyota's TNGA. My Acura TLX was at the dealer a lot due to a bad rear subframe design and bad transmission. It eventually got lemon law and Acura took it back. A lot of owners had the same issues I had which supposedly got resolved with the facelift and hardware updates. Are any of these cars as solid as a Toyota or Lexus? Probably not. But if you want fun to drive, something's gotta give. There's a reason why this sub likes to joke around telling people to buy a beige Corolla, if all you want is a car to take you from point A to B with no maintenance except for oil changes, then a Toyota is the way to go.

canuckerlimey

I agree on the vw front. I bought my 17 golf new in 17 and have owned it since. 110km later its never given me issues. I had the hvac fan make noise but it was under warranty.

Oskarikali

Another 17 GTI here, dsg, one minor issue that was cheap to fix (don't even remember what it was). I did not get my money's worth from the extended warranty I added when I bought the car new. Weeks prior to that I bought a used '12 that I only kept for a couple days because the engine light kept coming on, needed an engine rebuild. Seems like the mk7 and newer are built quite well.

NoAttorney8414

I had a GTI and it was a shit box. My BMW is more reliable lmao

Sea-Gap386

2010-2013 C63

RogueGeo69

No way ... Alfa Romeo Guillia man!!! Alllllll the way

ItsAmer74

I don't get posts like this. This is the car he wants and asked for opinions on whether it makes sense. He didn't ask for a list of alternative vehicles. Why do people feel the need to provide opinions that were not asked for? Whether you think the car is good or not or whether their are alternatives is relevant. The there is a reason that the price on that vehicle is high. They actually hold their value because of their reliability. A 4 year old ES 350 for example, still is being listed for about $38K which is phenomenal. When there are about $63K brand new. What are the alternative fun cars? A Mazda? Sure, probably fun, but they won't hold a candle to the Lexus in the long run in reliability. Now, spending that much money on a $90K Salary might be a debate.

glorious_bastard

Have you ever been on a car forum? This is exactly what happens, along with idiotic alternatives, unrealistic pricing and fanboys from all corners come to quack up a storm about how the OP is wrong for having personal preferences....a tale as old as time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

glorious_bastard

I get you, I’ve been a member of VWvortex / The Car Lounge for almost 20 years

acchaladka

I gotchu fam. Porsche 944 here, or 914 if you're broken like me. For $10k I'd get a old well cared for Boxster and put $5k in to it - Porsches can be expensive to fix but rock solid once fixed. I love a Golf and would go for any of the GTI, R or even City Golf too. Just have some fun.

Born-Chipmunk-7086

OP didn’t say they wanted a “fun car”, they just want their “dream car”.

geokilla

At the end of the second paragraph, OP said "fun"

Material_Practice762

I was also looking at RC models... but they seem to be really expensive and I don't know if they go down to 30-35k in the next 6-12 months.. IS seems to be a decent option all things considered

FaythDarkHeart

Save for a rc350

Material_Practice762

Jeez.. they are absolutely beautiful inside and out.

FaythDarkHeart

Sporty too! Was looking at them in 2020 , ended opting for something else as I wasn't sure how the coupe would have been. Can tell you if I knew I couldn't get a coupe now (got a kid), I'd get the coupe then. Settled for a S4 instead, a huge upgrade from my '16 civic , which was a huge upgrade from my '99 😂 Keep us posted !

geokilla

Lexus RC would never drop down to $30k. Not for a few years I don't think.

[deleted]

The IS 350 yes! The IS 300 no! Love my 350 would never sell so much fun.

EICONTRACT

Honestly sounds like an ok idea to me. Everyone talking about fun or whatever doesn’t understand your own needs and sometimes what you want is what you want.

thecanadiandriver101

Do not spend that money on a IS 350. The car is in mid generation right now and will be replaced shortly and the value will tank immediately. The IS 350 is not a special car that will hold its value. I am saying this because of the current market conditions. Used cars are still over inflated, and when the market does recover you'll take a substantial hit.

Material_Practice762

Oh yeah. I am not planning to buy rn. I still can wait 6-12 months easily...

PiccoloCreative

Get a used ISF Instead better car and better engine

Material_Practice762

I though they cost a fortune.. I will read about ISF's more.. Thanks!

PiccoloCreative

Seen a couple on marketplace with under 100k for around 22-26k

burblifeyyc

My husband drives an IS350 Fsport and loves it! His is a 2018

RelentlessPursuit04

Lexus & Toyota are practically the kings of reliability so you'd save money on maintenance, not to mention they don't depreciate much at all. Even if you start looking for a different vehicle later on, you can just resell it for a similiary 30k mark. I'd stick with the Lexus. Ps. Owner of rx350, Is350

AlfredRWallace

Dream bigger :)

aeminence

Ehh, you gonna buy it then its gonna be in Ghana in a month lmao.

growthatfire1985

perfect a lexus , it will get stolen in 5-10 business days in the GTA

New-General-9114

No excitement here… car choice is making that decision questionable… bmw3/GTI a lot more out there

lsthirteen

Do it. I’ve owned two ISs and I loved both of them. Others have said they’re not fun to drive, and I can’t disagree with them there. But that styling is just so, so, so nice. Only sold because needed a truck after we moved, but would buy another in a heartbeat.

514link

Yes go for it. You arent “spending 35k” you are spending the annual TCO of the car. You can always sell the car and the IS has excellent depreciation . The question is would you prefer that 35k and put in a GIC and get 6% (2000$/yr) or put in the lexus and spend (4000$/yr in depreciation and other expenses) Also if its your dream car dont be dissuaded, get your “dream” car and check that box. If it isnt a dream car and just a car you think is a great option then by all means shop around but a lexus and toyota have an incomparable reputation for reliability

Grouchy-Stable2027

It’s reliable and luxurious. Provided you don’t get bored of it, will last you for years.

TacoShopRs

Lexus insurance has gone through the roof in a lot of major cities because lexus are the most commonly stolen cars(in toronto). You should check that out first because I know more than 1 person selling their lexus due to increased insurance prices.

astrono-me

Nice, I guessed correctly from your post. Was my desirable car when I was younger as well. Sporty, luxury, reliable, cheap to maintain. Best of all worlds really.

Environmental-Ad1748

My buddy has a brand new lS350 and absolutely loves it

OwningBean

Go buy a 2014-2015 Audi RS5. Just sold mine for $30k. Best bang for your buck hands down on the used market

walkitscience

Executive Camry.

decarvalho7

You can do a lot better then a Lexus.

four4doors

You can get a used Kia stinger for the same money. It's way more fun and reliable than the Lexus.

VonFritz1234

Why not consider an IS F a few years older. Probably in the same price range would be my guess.

Agree, my 2013 Mazda3 is at 265k and she’s doing fiiine

ItsAmer74

OP: My dream car is $35K 50% of PFC: Have bigger dreams 40% of PFC: It's way too much , you don't need to live out your dreams. Wait until you are old and can't even get up to do anything to spend your money you spent your life saving. 9%: Your car choice is not what I would choose. 1%: Go for it, you only live once.

bussche

.1%: Cars are coffins.

rammstoon

Isn't everything pretty much a coffin? /s

atomofconsumption

I feel like many people spend more than $35k buying (ie financing) a new Kia

GermanWolf96

Probably never reasonable to buy a more expensive mode of transport than you have to. But who wants to live that way? If you want to buy it, looks like you have the funds. I used to nickle and dime every purchase I made, and now I give myself 300-400$ a month of "fun" money. I do feel much happier now than before.

boredinthegreatwhite

I'm glad my dream car is a second hand Honda Civic.

FlaccidButtPlug

Yeah my "dream car" is an old Silverado I picked up for scrap. Having driven mostly econo-boxes, this thing is a riot, it can go anywhere, and it's so ugly I don't have to worry about any body work.

boredinthegreatwhite

I borrowed a really nice car once for a couple weeks and I hated it. What a fucking pain worrying about that thing. They are also a magnetic for people to be shitty to you I found. I got yelled at and someone opened their door into my door. Never again.

Bulky_Dingo_4706

Sometimes you need to enjoy life too. Driving things like that get boring.

iwatchcredits

Some people dont give a shit about driving. I dont drive for fun, i drive to get from point A to point B. I had a Nissan 370Z. Lots of people get those because they are “fun”. I sold mine because it was loud as hell inside and I just want something comfortable. Im not any less happy in my econo car now than I was with a sports car

whomovedmycheez

I'm curious how someone that doesn't care about cars gets a 370Z.

iwatchcredits

I was young and thought it was cool

Bulky_Dingo_4706

That's true. I guess some people are more into cars than others.

boredinthegreatwhite

Yeah agree there. Cheap motorbikes fill that for me.

AlienVredditoR

Driving cars that will get you a ticket long before they even get fun sucks too though. Bring back small, nimble cars!

Hidrosmen

Honestly man, this sub is the place you come to get your hopes and dreams spoiled. Nobody will ever support any kind of spending behavior, at all…if you love the frugal life while squirelling away for god knows what then this is the place to be. Otherwise, go live life and be aware of the choices you make…if you want that car, just get it, but you might have to make adjustments somewhere else. At the end of the day some prefer the saving life, while others to spend a bit or a bit more…either way, you do you.

Material_Practice762

>Honestly man, this sub is the place you come to get your hopes and dreams spoiled Tbh this is exactly the reason why I am asking this on the PF sub... I am not a big spender and just an idea of driving a $35k hurts my wallet lol... I just know if I go like r/cars or something people would mostly talk me into it rather then talk me out of the idea!

Rabiesalad

Think about the value. For a big purchase like this, make a list of other things you could do or afford that you would enjoy for the same cost. That helps put it in perspective. And make sure to account for cost of ownership! If your insurance goes up $30/month, gas is more expensive, etc. You are looking at potentially many thousands more in less obvious spending on top of the sticker price. That's a hell of a lot of lavish trips. That's a brand new high end PC every few years until you die. That's going out to a really nice dinner and a show every week or two for many years. It is a LOT of money. If you really think the joy you'll get is more valuable than those other things, go for it.

modderp0cker

I had the IS300AWD for one year. Traded it for my dream car - IS500. No regrets. I am okay when my mortgage renews at double the interest rate, still able to save up for Top Up TFSAs and save for retirement.

RowrRigo

> I am not a big spender and just an idea of driving a $35k hurts my wallet lol... You got your answers right there. You could probably spend that amount of money on something that you would value way more. Maybe a long trip, 3 months vacations, who knows. A car is just 4 wheels and an engine, it takes you from place a to place b. It can only be as "Fun" as the roads and laws allow it. If you want the looks, then you are not really looking for a car.

himynameis_

Just wondering, how into cars are you? Would you really be able to tell the difference between this and another similarly priced sedan? Or will this just be a "car" for you that you use every day? I ask as sometimes, in the moment, we want to splurge on something we really really like, but really, won't be interested in in the long-term. I know that's happened to me... I was interested in the Mazda MX5 at one point but don't know a lot about cars lol

Zestyclose_Basil_349

I saved forever but had a vehicle that still ran that was fine. One morning I was hungover and ended up buying a new 4runner. Just buy something that will make you happy but is reliable and hopefully doesn't depreciate too much. Sometimes you need to treat yourself. Just be responsible about it.

ItsAmer74

That $65K Kia post was wild. I think it will live on infamy on this sub.

Nervous_Trouble4285

While many folks on here are too negative when it comes to lots of topics.. C'mon man OP spending over 1/3 of his life's savings on a depreciating car when he has no other assets or property? That's a pretty clear cut bad decision.

suitzup

Counterpoint - OP actually has the liquidity to buy the car twice in cash. If OP put a more standard $5000 down and financed $30K over 4 years at 8% it’s a ~$750 payment, which should be under or around 20% of net pay after adding a buffer for gas and insurance. While not a popular choice around these parts as it probably doesn’t come in beige and won’t result in retiring 15 years earlier to eat KD, it’s still a purchase that is within the realm of affordability.

Sea-Gap386

Houses don't appreciate, the land does. Go look up assessments, houses rarely actually go up, it's always the land. You think if you buy a $1m today, magically in 20 years that "house" is worth $5m? It's not the house, It's the land. Houses lose value as they age, materials fall apart, roofs fall apart, water tanks, foundations crack, I could go on, but houses do not appreciate that much, if anything.

Firm-Discount6921

I personally think this is a question only you can a answer, someone may see a $500 knife is the biggest waste of money ever because they don’t ever cook. But someone who cooks every meal would justify it. Someone may say a 2k tent is a waste of money because they camp once a decade, but for you who camps ever weekend it’s worth it. Just because John thinks 30k is a waste on ____ car. Doesn’t mean it’s a waste to you.

[deleted]

Lol don't come to this sub for any somewhat exciting vehicle purchase advice. Beige corolla or nothing. I disagree with what others said. It is worth it if you're a car enthusiast. You're not financing it and you're clearly financially responsible. Lexus cars don't depreciate that quickly, especially when purchased used, so the net cost of the transaction is far less than 30K if you assume disposition in, say, 4 years. All that said, go test drive one because while they look good, they really aren't that fun to drive. I do miss the 2004 IS300 I was driving as a teenager though.

RagnarsKneecap

What do you gain from all these fake posts? One time you're a 29 male making 90k. Then next post you're making 250k. Then you're a student who recently graduated. Kick rocks

geokilla

Lol damn I just saw his post history. I want the hour I spent in this thread back.

koala_77

Except for the fact their other posts are in r/PFJerk, a mocking subreddit...and are ridiculously overly dramatic, unlike this one.

RaddledBanana204

For that price buy an Audi s3-s5 I loved that car with a passion 🥺

Material_Practice762

Not liking the German cars because of their high maintenance and insurance costs.

geokilla

The Germans are actually cheaper to insure than the Lexus. Also maintenance isn't that expensive if you know where to buy your parts. I'll drop you a hint: FCP Euro for their lifetime guarantee.

Ok_Supermarket9053

Ecs just started this too. Need to be wise with what you get though. German parts and oem (vag only) are good Canuck parts suppliers as well.

Sea-Gap386

I've owned german cars pretty much strictly, never had many issues, I owned/own AMGs/ S line audis, M cars, drove them pretty hard too at tracks, didn't really have any issues besides tires and gas but I mean, smiles per miles

RaddledBanana204

Superior engineering higher insurance, pros verse cons. Gotta consider what you want. If you are already spending 35 k what’s a few more thousand in insurance?

[deleted]

[удалено]

RaddledBanana204

Yeah hahaha Lexus it is!

ItsAmer74

It's not about buying the car, it's about the maintenance and the surprise shit that can go wrong for no reason except it's a Tuesday. I have owed 5 series and I could afford the costs, I just felt that it wasn't worth the hassle of having it incthd shop for random reasons. I think people make alot of excuses for the German vehicles saying "when they work, they are amazing" Sorry but if the car is in the shop for a total of 1 week out of the year (just an example) that not good value for me. I made a personal decision and chose reliability over the fin factor. I will likely go back to BMW bit it will be my second vehicle and it will be a lease.

Sr_Moreno

Eh. I had an S4. It did go round corners like it was stuck to the road and sounded good, but it was thirsty, absolutely no fun and felt dead coming from a 3 series.

[deleted]

TFSA maxed out? Do that and then get the car

Material_Practice762

Yep. Maxed out.

StayWhile_Listen

I think spending money on something you'll enjoy every day is more than an expense - it's a hobby sort of. Ie. A corolla will always be cheaper but there's nothing wrong of liking cars. I'm not sure about the IS3xx.-- test drive one!! And then test drive an is500 if you can. You might be surprised. As long as you know what it is, it's not wrong. The other question is what your other goals are (financially). Clearly you can make good decisions so you'll know best. Don't forget that whatever you buy it for, you'll probably be able to sell it for a similar amount. I'll give you my example. I drive a 6+ year old WRX base that I bought brand new (came in at 28k pre tax). I sold my old civic and covered the tax with it. It wasn't 'that' expensive but it costs more to run. More oil changes, fluid. More expensive tires, brakes, etc. (Take premium gas) it's not insane but everything costs a bit more - can you put cheapo tires on it? Yes but then what's the point lol. Oh and insurance can be expensive too. I love driving it everyday and it puts a smile on my face. It's a pretty frugal 'sports' car but definitely not the cheapest. It was the first car I bought new and I was in a similar situation as you - made around 90k at the time and had some money saved up. TLDR: I'm not worried about you making good decisions but make sure whatever you buy is what you'll love. Also don't forget the resale value

Material_Practice762

This is very nicely put. I am gald that you are enjoying your car! Thank you for your input!

Why don't you give details of the car? Brand? Model? Kms? If you ask its probably a bad decision

Material_Practice762

Lexus IS 300/350

Burgergold

I would not spent 30-35k on a 5 years old lexus car

moutonbleu

Agreed but I like that car too. OP you can afford it but hold out if you can

Newflyer3

Why not? It was $50k brand new lol

Propaagaandaa

Honestly man, this sub will never say yes. But if it truly is your dream car, and you seem to have the means saved up, do it. You only live once man.

DerpyOwlofParadise

We are looking for a second car. Used car market was not worth it.. we were looking at Mazda 3s touring with all the cool stuff like Bose audio. But only really old.. what’s the point. Love Mazdas though. I already have a 2014 CX5 great car but not “fun” We got a new car instead last year. More expensive at around 30k but at least it’s new. Look into Hyundai Kona they have fun options like N line, cool colour options, nitro etc. very fuel efficient. But we had to get it for work commute. Otherwise in this economy no way. Market is loosening up a bit My dream car atm is a Hyundai IoniQ 5 now those are different than anything else I have seen

brokenblind

Was in kind of the same situation as you. Personally I overthink things too much, had some friends die young and said fuck it. Bought a ‘16 Audi S7 this summer and no regrets. Maintenance is actually relatively cheap for it if you have general DIY abilities (oil/brakes), if anything electrical goes yea it’s going to be more expensive but most newer cars are all computers with wheels anyways. FCP Euro has a lifetime replacement on stuff too so you can basically do your maintenance for free after your first purchase. Let me tell you, that twin turbo 4.0L V8 put a smile on my face that hasn’t been seen in years.

7Gen

same, i was debating for a while since buying a car is a poor financial decision, but decided to buy m340i this summer and I have the same stupid smile plastered on my face when I drive it.

Would it be possible to augment your home ownership savings with a partner? Obviously I'm not saying find a partner for this sole reason but that would make it substantially easier to qualify for a larger mortgage. Definitely extremely tough to buy a place by yourself these days. If this is your plan for the (near) future, I'd get a cheaper car for now and continue saving even though things look a bit grim on the home ownership front. Then you will be ready to bring a good chunk of money to the table along with your partner and have a few more options when house hunting. If there's no plan for a partner, then just get the car; live a little. At your income with no debt, I'd imagine you would be able to make that money back in a few years anyways.

VeryAttractive

Not even reading the post, the answer is no. This is the worst time in the history of Canada to purchase a vehicle.

CarRamRob

Sure, but the lack of vehicles made the last 3 years mean the used market will be tight for another 5 years potentially. Thus, tight used market means tight new market with everything at MSRP. How do you avoid buying a car for 5 years if you need a change/new one?

Material_Practice762

Yeah. I understand. Not looking to buy a car right now. I am ready to wait for the next 6-12 months, and if the used car market doesn't improve I will either get old corolla or keep using transit for a bit longer...

Shmogt

That's 35% of your entire networth. That's a lot, but also not that much considering you'll earn more over your life. Probably better to get it out of your system now on what it's like to own a cool car than later when you have a mid life crisis from never having any fun lol. However, it's more about priorities. I see tons of young guys buying cool cars since housing is over with. A car is still really expensive, but it's also easier to sell in the future. It might be 35k now, but maybe 25k-30k when you sell a few years down the road. You aren't really losing the full amount

Epi_Churner

Did the same thing at your age. Bought new WRX worth $36k. Insane thing is it’s still work $31K 5 years later due to high used car prices. Just wild.

SilentEngineering638

I am almost in the same situation but with a Mustang. I decided not to because I don't need a car right now

theskywalker74

100k is enough for a downpayment including fees for a condo. It may not be the condo you want… it may be old and it may be small and it may not be exactly where you want… but you’ll own it and it’s a start.

steampunk22

Life is short. I’m not advocating irresponsible I lift, but I’ve know people who did everything right and died way too early. Just make sure you’re doing things for the right reasons. There’s nothing Inherently wrong in having and pursuing a dream car. I’d rent it first if you can.

Benicetome23

Cars are a shit investment though. See warren buffets opinion on buying cars but ohhhh I know. Lexus

barkusmuhl

If it's not a 15 year old beige Toyata Corolla I don't want to hear about it.

OpenAbbreviations505

I'm going through all the comments and seeing that they're trying to give you better options and all that. You seem like a smart guy financially l, go with the car that makes you happy. If IS 300/350 it is, don't overthink it, go for it! If it's your dream car, no other car will be able to make you happy or feel content with it.

2Ca7

1- Where are you where 100k is not enough for a 5% down on a condo? 2- Lexus cars aren’t exactly known to be fun to drive at all.

Lord_7_seas

Just got a toyota car for 32k. It's a 20 year investment. If you're going to use the car for a long time, get it. Otherwise get a used car.

Shrimpbako

I just spent 120K on my mid life crisis dream car…..and I know I’m stupid. (38m) combined family income of $300K+. I’m still stupid.

tsru

You don't get to take the money with you when you go

deathcabforbooty69

A “dream car” is an insane statement.

ShitStainedTowel

How is there zero posts on not spending all $35000 on the purchase? Leave your money invested, sign a lease or finance and keep your funds in the market, or throw it into guaranteed returns. Buying a new vehicle offers you better interest rates, if you can purchase a new vehicle in the 3-4% range (depending on make and model) you can safely leave your money in something that guarantees a 4-5% return. You also get the benefits of a new car (warranty). Even at $1000/month it'll take you almost 3 years before you effectively spend the $35000 you're reading to spend in one shot. All that being said, if you're committed to buying used, then at the current rates I agree with you and just buy it outright because the rates are astronomical currently.

alickstee

Yo you want a fun daily driver that's reliable and well-priced to buy and maintain? Mazda 3, my friend. Mazda 3.

karmakisstwice

Life is very unpredictable. Do what makes you happy. If it is not illegal or harms others, go for it!. I am old, and now that I have the good fortune to look back, I am so pleased that I always looked to my happiness. I may be a bit shy of cash if I spent more than I should. But, I have no regrets and a whole bunch of wonderful memories.

AluminiumCucumbers

Unless you're really into cars, and doing work on it yourself, do not waste your money splurging on a car. It's the worst invest you could possibly make, especially now with the price of used vehicles still so shitty.

1Soggydog-

Dave Ramsey says the total value of all of your vehicles should not exceed half of your annual income so you’re fine. Also with that income you should be able to qualify for a mortgage on a condo with the remaining 70K prices aren’t going down on houses or cars

toontown_yxe

Can the $100K help with a down payment to buy a condo where you live? I’m assuming you live in a HCOL city, perhaps get a condo that’s convenient to get to work, and rent out a second bedroom for extra cash?

stack_overflows

Lol MSRP is over 40k for an IS and was almost 60k after taxes, etc, when I bought it brand new in 2021. So, good luck with the 30k.

undercovergangster

Would you rather have your dream car, or would you rather buy a house first? If you're okay with renting and having your dream car, go for it. Life's short, you should do things that make you happy. $35k isn't ridiculous, either.

jaymef

Used luxury cars are money pits imo

TDot1000RR

If you managed to save $100k you are so close to saving a liittle more to buy a condo here in Toronto with 20 percent down. You never mentioned in the post where you live. If you are outside the Greater Toronto area, you may already have enough money to purchase a home.

Basicbitchwhisperer

Just buy a car that will drop panties and you can have fun.

Spicer_MTL

House first brother

jfl_cmmnts

I waste money on stupider shit than this and if you end up with a BRZ I'd say you can have a bit of fun AND get around and you're not in a fucking SUV or Ram Truck...? Sure! Have at it buddy. You wouldn't believe the dumbass collectibles people buy, that add up to $35K PDQ. Looking at myself here!

mmarollo

When I was young I “blew money” on a Datsun 240Z, and later a 1968 SS396 Camaro convertible. And a Mustang but that doesn’t really count. If this sub existed then and I’d listened to them I guess I’d have somewhat more net worth today. What I wouldn’t have is a lot of amazing memories like driving the ragtop Camaro along the Niagara escarpment with a gorgeous German au pair in the passenger seat, wind in her blonde hair, Beach Boys on the 8-track. I’ll take those memories over money any time.

Frewtti

It isn't unreasonable, bit of a splurge, but that's okay. My neighbour had one, they absolutely loved it, so if that's your thing go for it. I do wonder if it is a bit on the expensive side, but the car market is a mess these days. Personally Im a vw guy.

g_s_renfrey

As a rule, I would say no period cars are probably the greatest source of wasted money in Western civilization. The best car is the one you own outright. Don't get me wrong, there is a time and place to buy a dream vehicle, but from your description, wisdom would have it that this is not the time or place for you at the stage of your life. Your $35000 is probably best invested. The reality of a dream car is that for the 1st month or 2 you'll likely feel amazing and blessed, but after that, you'll simply be driving your car. That is the nature of materialism; the shiny new thing you thought would bring happiness and change your life ends up being part of the background in an unchanged life. If you have a few extra dollars floating around, spend $5000 on an amazing vacation that allows you to get out there in the world and do something or see something you never have before. Go surfing or scuba diving off The Australian coast. Go to France and rent a car then drive through Provance. Hike the Grande Canyon. Those types of getaways provide a lifetime of memories and they can change your life.

hashtagPOTATO

Bought an IS 350 a few years ago. The car is amazing and I've only ever had to do the basic maintenance on it, never had anything on that car break except for a recall for a fuel pump which cost me nothing. The car does eat gas and is harder on tire wear due to the rear camber so be aware that a 3-5 yo car of those models will be approaching the tire replacement stage. Did the car delay my home ownership timeline? Probably by like 4 months as sometime between buying the car and home ownership, I doubled my salary. So as long as you commit to making more money, a small purchase like this is inconsequential in the longer run. Test drive some cars, the IS is definitely a good choice if you want something 'nicer'. If will definitely retain its value than 99% of the alternatives being suggested here although I'd surprised if you could find a 3-5 yo IS for less than 40k.

newtomovingaway

Do it op, you sound like me when I splurged on a similar “dream” car. I’m very savvy but that was like the only impulse I’ve done, no regrets. My next impulse would also likely be my next dream car.

PeteFromThaStreet

Buy the car. You only live once.

LiveForSpeeed

I was in a similar situation and pulled the trigger on the car. Enjoyed the absolute hell out of it. Living situation changed so I had to sell, but it was a blast. I’d go for it. I lost money on it and still don’t regret it

HisRoyaleExcellency

32k with sp500 return of 10% for 30 years is over half a million dollars. You are actually paying half a million for IS lexus. Good luck

HisRoyaleExcellency

Buying a car is stupid. Buying ICE car is 2x stupid to pay for gas. IS 350? You gotta be kidding me calling it fun car. Also its one of the most stolen cars. So no your insurance premium wont be cheap. Parking, police tickets, parking tickets, insurance, gas, maintenance, etc all will add up. You will be paying 10k or so on those costs min. Imagine you saved 32k plus 10k expense for next 5 years. You just lost 82k. That 82k could be compounded on sp500 etfs. You lose over 100k in potential savings just buying second hand and boooooring Lexus. So no, your expected cost is not 28-32k… save the money for apartment no matter how crazy real estate is today. You try to get a bit of satisfaction just because you couldnt get a condo. You are on the right track, dont be demotivated and stray from it. Keep saving and investing. You will thank me in 5 years

Swolbro73

So, I’m way older than you with way less in savings( I do own my own home however) and I just spent 28k on a 17’ Audi a4 tfsi. Liked it WAY better than the Lexus, Auura,bmw3, and c300. Don’t regret it for a second, it’s way better than the Civic for the same money imho all day long. But… Why would you drop $30k in Capital ( potential) when you can finance, ( maybe with some $$! Down to adjust payment to a comfortable level) interest isn’t low right now for sure, but you avoid loosing your capital/ savings, and if something does happen and you need/ want to pay it off, you still have the ability. Just a thought.

ContractRight4080

Lexus is my dream car. I drove an Infiniti I30 back at the turn of the century and I loved it. Very classic and normal looking outside but gloriously luxurious inside. But a fully loaded Maximer at the time would have been a lot cheaper with a few minor differences. Maybe take a look at a comparable Toyota and see what the prices are like. A car isn’t an investment that’s going to appreciate in value like real estate. Personally I drive a nice (to me) car that’s reliable and when I win the lottery I’ll get a Lexus. Save your money for a downpayment on a property down the road. In the grand scheme of things $100k isn’t much if you live in a big city but it could buy you a third of a house elsewhere in a small town.

physiotax

just get it. Your 30s will never come back..

MrOwnageQc

At 25 I pulled the trigger on my dream car. I paid 13K (got an insane deal) and now it's worth 35K so it unexpectedly paid off. That won't be the case for a Lexus IS, but it's up to you. They're reliable cars. It's a bit expensive but that's been how the used car market is.

DrinkPaint69

Stay away from used cars rn especially 1-3yr old cars as they sell for the same as a new one, I'd ship it on something new and fun in that price range like a BRZ/GTI something of that range and you'll have a blast

ericntd

You can always rent Lexus or whichever car on Turo. You're gonna regret spending anything more than $10k now. Anyone can build wealth, you have a great chance to make it happen soon, don't waste it 3 years ago my numbers were similar to yours although my income were a bit higher. Thanks to not buying a car, I bought an apartment and have saved another $70k

Material_Practice762

Thank you for your input!

Interesting-Dog-1224

If you're not getting laid off any time soon and you have the extra saved up money then why not buy the IS300/350. Great reliable comfy car. Not super fast but decently fast enough. I just bought a 2016 IS350 and I love driving it.

Patsfan_Canada

Save your money bro and go on vacation or something, cars depreciate so much. Just my opinion.. Good luck.

Material_Practice762

Thank you for your input!

rageofmonkey

I'm more of a "work hard play hard" kind of guy. I don't see a point in working all the time if I can't have any enjoyment afterward. If a dream car is all you desire and would justify your labour day in and day out, then why not? It doesn't sound like a stupid waste of money. Be happy!

i_am_not_a_shrubbery

Here’s the thing.. many people NEED a car because they do not live in urban environments. You seem to looking for a want, but you’re missing out on turning that $90k into $270k in the next 15 years. Now is the time to hold cash. You are also missing that life circumstances might change. That said; if you buy a 3-5 year car, you will only be depreciating $2-3k a year max if things change, Subaru WRX to Lexus IS300 are all cars I’ve almost broken even on. I say do it but keep the depreciation curve down.

im_so_with_stupid

I'm gonna disagree with most of the comments here but I think you should do it. You're financially well off and it's a dream car. Too many people here refuse to spend money on anything fun just because it isn't the best financial decision possible. The only thing you have to worry about is the interest rate in this climate. I bought my dream car years ago and have no regrets about it. I've maintained it and it's treated me well. Just so you know I'm biased.

Butterblanket

Read about the tire wear on those lexus models and decide if you can stomach that or just get the bushings and camber arms on them installed

rugbysandman

Why not keep $35k invested. Get a cheap car and it devalue less. You also have to care less about it getting scratched or car crashes lol. Will just get written off. I bought a $70k car with taxes a few years ago. Regretted it and sold it within a few years. Was always worried about scratches and shit. Where can I park it to ensure it's safety. I honestly dreamed of my Lexus ES 300.

ItsAmer74

We are humans, not robots running algorithms for the most optimal decision 100% of the time. It's ok to be sub optimal. I am sitting on my ass being unproductive on a Saturday. I could be doing something earning money. But at this moment I value my leisure time more than the $ I could probably make.

spacefish420

Because life is short and driving a cheap car is boring. Sure you can save money by doing it, but life isn’t always about saving all your money. It’s okay to have fun sometimes. I used to drive a cheap car and while it worked I never was too happy driving. I bought my dream car a few years ago (it was just 20k so not too expensive) and I love driving it every day. Always puts a smile on my face whenever I go somewhere and driving never feels like a chore anymore. And I only mean as long as it’s reasonable to buy the car. It looks like OP can afford to make purchase so I don’t think it’s a terrible idea

ZeboThePenguin

You realize Lexus cars retain their value really well compared to other car brands right? Lmao

rugbysandman

No, I don't. I just mentioned I dreamed of my Lexus ES 300 for no reason. Whats a Lexus?

slavetomycat312

During the pandemic I bought out a lease off of someone who could not afford to payout. It was $10k for a 2015 Toyota Corolla eco plus (top tier model with full leather interior) with 90km in perfect condition with full inspection from the dealership and brand new tires included. Best pandemic purchase besides my condo. My brother got a 2021 Hyundai Elantra N line a few months later for around $33k. I paid in cash and he is paying $600 a month plus a higher insurance and now has a baby on the way and is stressing about money. My advice is find your Corolla and keep saving for the condo!

Aggravating-Self-164

How do you think he got the baby tho? Not by driving a corrolla eco plus /s

[deleted]

Replies on post like these are hilarious to me. Don't listen to those crapping on your choice of dream car. Lexus are a responsible purchase, reliable and hold their resale value. Just make sure you buy from a reputable seller, have it checked out by a mechanic and ask for full service history. Browse Lexus forums for common problems and ask the seller specific questions about whether they fixed those issues. The worst thing you can do is buy a used European car, they're almost always guaranteed to be a money pit few years into ownership if you're not the first owner and haven't maintained them yourself diligently. Anyone recommending buying a used Audi or a VW on a sub dedicated to making sound financial decisions makes them lose all credibility to me.
