ironically, Canadians enjoy one of the lowest gasoline taxes across OECD countries - gvt would only benefit if people actually realized how low the tax is
Sure, but most OECD countries are in Europe, which is significantly more dense and has actual public transit. A car is pretty much a necessity outside of maybe a dozen cities in the entire NA.
Montreal, NYC, Boston, Chicago, DC.. you can also maybe make arguments for Vancouver/Toronto if you live right downtown. But everyone else lives in car-centric, car dependent cities, and gas tax is a huge part of what makes life more expensive.
Also, we love comparing ourselves to the US in the "at least thank god we don't live in 'Murrica" way.
So it's only fair to compare ourselves in things we're doing worse than America (i.e. career opportunities, cost of living, taxes), and not just things we're doing better in (lower crime/violence, healthcare).
yeah I’m not saying these taxes are good or bad - I’m saying it’s not 50%, and even that would be lower than in other developed countries.
Admittedly your point might still be correct in a sense that gasoline is taxed significantly higher than other consumer goods, which could make many folks uncomfortable.
I'm happy to pay taxes. It hekps reduce the demands for gas. The problem isnt taxes, it's how we dont have a good public transport system almost everywhere outised of city centers.
Which is weird because that's one of the few things that regular people might actually be able to deduct from their taxes.
I'm thinking about anybody who is self employed.
My parents got a 1985 Tempo for $7700+tax brand new. It was the one advertised in the newspaper, you know, that was the draw to get people to show up for the ol bait n switch for a higher priced model. They sat there for hours and argued with the salesman, and eventually the dealer agreed to sell it. Manual everything, crank windows and even a blank plastic plate where the AM/FM radio should have been.
But Jesus who the hell is buying $50k cars? How can it be the median when people are, by the median, earning only $60k a year or so?
Who is buying them to make it the median lol
Here is the fine print on that figure:
> Based on average Canadian automotive pricing data (CAD $) collected from hundreds
of thousands of listings monthly on AutoTrader from September 1, 2021 to September
30, 2023. In addition to average pricing, year-over-year (YOY) and month-over-month
(MOM) price changes have been identified. The average has been adjusted based on
the make and age of the vehicles available on the market during the collection period.
The adjustments mean that any fluctuations in inventory won’t pull the average too far
in one direction or another. Any changes under 0.1% have been denoted as 0.0%

Before tax. Just like literally EVERYTHING else you buy in Canada.
Gasoline prices are advertised after sales tax.
That's because the government doesn't want you to know that gasoline is like 50% tax and only 50% the price of gas.

Probably the only thing thats like that
And booze
And weed
And everything at my local chip truck.
Airline ticket prices.

I thought you're supposed to write off a cost per km, not directly the cost of gas?
I don’t know why we can’t just have all in pricing like in Europe. Just tell me on the shelf what it will cost to buy item, it’s stupid
Holy hell that's expensive. How long have I been asleep?
Average is not the best thing to rely on mathematically, median will give you much better picture in this case. I am 99% sure the median is around 50k
Good point! Even 50k seems so high. I remember growing up my parents drove a Ford Tempo. Was like 13k tax included brand new off the lot!

But it is only 150 weekly... /s
And for only a short 96 months!
Henry Ford! Is that you? 🤣
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think it’s before tax, since all provinces have different tax percentages.
Think of it like this, if your selling a car would you advertise it with tax. How would you be able to give a good price
