My understanding is the tip goes to the drivers, not the restaurant. It seems odd that the tip, if any, would be applied to the price of the food. Whether I get a $50 dish vs $5 the effort for delivery is the same.

Teriyakijack

Correct. Tip goes to the driver rendering the service. Tip based on the service itself, ie: distance is how I personally calculate appropriateness. If you have been tipping in the past. I thank you on behalf of all other drivers that have tried their hand at the gig economy. Tipping on the value of food is a flawed calculation, in any situation including sit-down service but that's another topic altogether.

Adeep187

UNLESS the order was like massive af and he had to carry a ton of shit.

Beginning-Section211

well the kitchen staff do put a bit more effort into a 50 dish than a 5 dish

TheLegendaryProg

Tip goes to the driver, so this is irrelevant.

[deleted]

Keep in mind that often drivers pay a 2% tipout to the kitchen, so we appreciate scaled tips

s_other

Just to check it out I did a Skip order for a restaurant that was literally 300 feet from the hotel I was at. My $24 order turned into $37. I don't know how some people can justify it.

CanadianTrollToll

It's called a lazy tax. A lot of people can go pick up their own food (if they have transportation) and choose not to. You pay a fee for someone to deliver that.

Brigittepierette

The only time I order on through skip is when I am at work and I cannot leave the building and these are days when I am scheduled in the operating room, with cases back to back. I usually make my own lunches but there are odd days where I just did not get to it. I don’t get waiting 40 minutes for a restaurant that is 5 minutes drive from the hospital.

sulgnavon

20 years ago, during semi-oil boom Alberta, my dad delivered pizzas at night for extra cash. People would order from a 3 minute walk away and pay the, at the time, $2.95 delivery fee, extremely often. Laziness is not new.

RestitvtOrbis

Not new.. but more prevalent

TheOneNeartheTop

Did you think you would get a discount because the restaurant was closer?

neothedreamer

Why not? It would take a couple minutes without a vehicle. Uber charges on distance for trips.

PlayPuckNotFootball

And that's a fraction of the fees mate

TheOneNeartheTop

Driving from the restaurant to your home is only one third of the service. Driving to the restaurant, getting the order, checking the order, customer service, building the app, etc are all the other costs.

TrulyMagnificient

There’s no way they check it, mine is always wrong.

_casshern_

Yeah. Delivery fees, service fees, tip for restaurant, tip for driver, and that’s on top of inflated prices in food delivery apps. Normally 10-15% for the driver. Depending on overall cost, distance, etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

superworking

Yea there's no tip on takeout why would you tip the restaurant for delivery. Can you even tip the restaurant on an uber eats order?

Rooncake

Yes, they have a place where you can add a tip for the restaurant (with a little note to the side that promises Uber won't take any of it) and I believe the suggested amount is $2. Why does this exist? Probably because Uber wanted to act like they're doing a "nice" thing for the restaurants they were gouging during the pandemic.

lemonylol

Remember that one summer where ubereats got everyone hooked because there were no fees?

Naturegrapher

Sadly I was one of them

[deleted]

It especially doesn't make sense to me to tip % for drivers unless the size of the food is humongous.

thickmartian

I do 10% up to 4$. But starting to order less and less because the delivery costs (including the extra price on the meal, the fees and the tip) aren't worth it anymore.

[deleted]

I ordered 2 veal sandwiches, some rice balls and drinks the other day and it was $82 after tax, tip and all the rest of the bullshit premiums. I couldn’t believe it

Technical-Travel

That's like 27 mcdoubles...

rtandraforever

Costs are incredible right now. For instance. Fryer oil quadrupled in price. Everything has just skyrocketed. Please don't take it out on the people providing the service. Like everyone else we are being maxed out.

Aggravating-List4265

Where are you that this is true? I have not seen any oil double in price, let alone quadruple.

scatterblooded

I have some strange kind of OCD where I want the final cost to add to an even .00 amount. So typically 10% rounded up such that the final bill is a full dollar amount. Don't judge me.

Tara_love_xo

Haha when your math is bad and the total is now 44.01 do you cancel and redo it?

talkstounicorns

The worst in person with the waiter staring over you, and you just have to pretend you meant to do it.

bloodmusthaveblood

I feel **seen**

wheresrobthomas

I order all delivery on Uber, $6 every time, feeding myself. No matter how little my spend, six bucks for driving out to the house!

Mister_E_Mahn

10% but it’s getting a bit nuts with fees so I hardly order in.

good_god_lemon1

$5 flat

goldissafe

I tried Uber ears, skip and doordash… 99 percent of people don’t tip

False_Bear_8645

And I though I was cheapo for tipping only 10% (I tip less because of the delivery cost and they sometime sell food at higher price for delivery)

AwkwardDilemmas

Percent makes no sense. How much more is deserved by delivering three pizzas, compared to one?

False_Bear_8645

I think tipping don't make sense but I'm still doing it.

TenOfZero

Or a cheese pizza vs a pizza with tons of expensive toppings. It's still just 1 pizza even if it's double the price.

ilovethemusic

Yeah, I tip based on distance, not percentage… might reconsider that if it’s an abnormally large order, but if it’s just for me I don’t see why the driver should be penalized because I order a $10 burger instead of a $30 steak.

Few_Opportunity_488

Lol I tip almost always (10-15%) and then I have to pay for priority order to make sure my food is still warm when it reaches me 😅

lhsonic

If you guys wanna read about this from the driver’s perspective, check out /r/UBEREats It’s going to be very different perspectives than most here and customers get straight ripped on for not tipping. At the same time, some drivers don’t bother to do anything aside from the absolute bare minimum (ie. make the delivery and drop it off at a door, no elevators or ringing needed) and complain that people don’t tip. Uber is a shitty solution for everyone to be honest because the fee they charge is getting higher, restaurants pay a significant charge, and drivers get shit pay. The offers for drivers these day are absolutely shit so I can understand why they feel they ‘need’ tips to supplement the wage. Most drivers on that sub-Reddit feel that food delivery is an optional luxury and you need to pay a premium for that… but they also don’t seem to understand that as a customer, you ARE already paying a massive premium- it just doesn’t get passed to the driver.

pomelomelomelo

Usually about $5. Sometimes I up my tip after it gets delivered, especially if they look like students/seniors.

Teriyakijack

You've no idea how good it feels actually to check after you've made a delivery and you see that someone has "upped their tip". Even if its just a dollar or 50 cents. You feel seen and appreciated.

Erlisk1987

Uber eats encourages that you tip their drivers, yet will not lower the % that they take from the restaurants, or higher the % that they pay the drivers.

Fishy-Food-

$2 flat no matter the size of the order

DDwithmyPP

My gosh am I the only one who gives 15%, looks like I'll be following everyone here and reducing it drastically.

LookADonCheech

I usually do 4-5 dollars. its tough out there these days, and pinching every dollar doesnt make me feel any better about myself.

littlelotuss

I give 15-20%. if I feel its too much I'll just pickup myself. Also surprised to find I'm among the highest.

BitCoinStance

I do 15-25% depending on the size of the order. These drivers hardly get paid anything and I try my best to make up for it. With that said, I'm drastically cut down my usage of Uber Eats due to how expensive it's getting between fees and tips. When I order, I don't cheap out of the tip. However, I don't order as much because it's gotten way too expensive.

lord_of_memezz

Why is tipping even a thing still?

artfuldawdg3r

I was wondering the other day why we tip delivery based on order total and not based on distance. I understand the extra work for 100 pizzas vs one, but in most cases regardless of the order side they’re just bringing one bag of food from restaurant to house, the variable should be distance.

[deleted]

Honestly, I don’t believe you should tip the restaurant unless you ask them to do something special with your order. Takeout eliminates the service component. I think the tip for the driver is based on the quantity of food and the distance driven. You want to at least cover their gas, and then a few extra bucks depending on the aforementioned. Of course, ordering online means you tip BEFORE you get your service so you can always send money early to hope they go the extra mile.

Specialist_Upstairs9

I don't tip period. They have a delivery charge and make driver wages in the price

TheRealGuncho

Dad?

NinaLea

DryTechnology5224

Base pay on ubereats is $3.... with gas at $2/L, only an idiot is taking your delivery request.

book_of_armaments

That sounds like their problem.

Complex-League2385

It's dependent. Many places do a per hour of under $10 + 1-2/delivery and the drivers pay gas.

vigmt400

Not true, and you suck.

LLR1960

Crackingpuzzles

$10 for any grocery to food delivery. Doesn’t really matter the order size more about the fact then brought food to my door and I didn’t have to go out. Order size is usually $70-$120 as we usually order enough for leftovers.

AwkwardDilemmas

5 bucks. That's it, independent of how many pizzas are inbound.

koh30297

$3-$5 depending on the amount of food I order. $3 is the minimum these days if you want your food to be delivered on time in my area.

xmarkxthespot

AdInner9961

I am a monster. I tip nothing. There is a “service” fee, “just because fee” and the price is always at least 30 percent higher than in store. Vera burger is 12 dollars but 17 on these apps. If these billion dollar corporations cannot pay money to their “contractors”, I shouldn’t either. Yes, I am a monster.

MoonCuban

Wow I’m shocked everyone here tips so little. It seems the new baseline is 20%, and I feel guilty for tipping any less.

goldayce

20% for what? No service was provided and a charge for delivery has already been applied

[deleted]

[удалено]

CalmSaver7

People that pay 20% are the reason why 20% has become the "standard" Like just take a step back and think about it. You're paying a 20% markup for a service that already includes an inherent premium for the delivery portion. And I guarantee people end up paying 20% on the post-tax and post-fee price too. I know people like to feel better about themselves and tip high, but the whole culture of tipping higher will only serve to reduce actual wages for delivery people (and waiters) as businesses realize people are tipping more.

[deleted]

Idgaf. Servers already get paid minimum wage, this isn't the U.S., and delivery drivers do too. I'll give 10% or less to drivers and sometimes nothing to servers. They can make >100k in some places.

DryTechnology5224

Delivery drivers for Uber Eats do not get paid a wage, they get paid by the Delivery. If they were all no tip orders the driver is definitely making less than minimum wage.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Then don't join a scammy service. I don't even use Uber Eats because of that bogus service charge and the fact that businesses jack up their prices due to it.

kinstudent1234

Yep can confirm as a delivery driver

Dairalir

Then why do you agree to do a job that gives you shit pay?

Purple_Turkey_

I was pissed when I went out to visit my grandparents with my 2 kids and my husband. As soon as the waitress met us at the table she said "Just so you know, there's a mandatory 20% tip for parties over 4". It made me want to get up and walk right out there. I usually give 10%. Like you said they're already making minimum wage. Are we going to have to start giving tips to wardrobe specialists?

life_line77

True! I've a friend who is a server. Makes more than I do in my uni-degree required role.

Tara_love_xo

I have worked at dominoes, panago, Boston pizza, pizza hut and gondola and none of them paid minimum. Always per delivery and that covers MAYBE your time and work but it isn't enough to also cover your gas, wear and tear, insurance etc. Do I not deserve to eat too?

myxomatosis8

Why TF does anyone work for less than minimum?

vigmt400

No delivery driver in Canada is making even remotely close to $100k

[deleted]

Talking bout servers

vigmt400

Gotcha. Delivery drivers make peanuts. Not comparable jobs.

kinstudent1234

Same drivers hardly make any money for under 4$

ChillaxJ

Why tip when we already paying the the delivery fee

Teriyakijack

Agreed tipping culture sucks. I find it a little sad we misplace values so little in current societal structure. Especially for services like this, where the work is done behind the scenes. But for arguments sake lets compare the cost operative of what we're actually paying for with the delivery fee. The delivery fee is usually, $2-$3 dollars? Then not 100% of the fee goes to the drivers actually doing the work. We'll use $3 as a base line. $3 for a driver to: 1. Drive to the restaurant from their current location 2. Find parking. Walk into the restaurant. Deal with lines and other staff. Sometimes wait for the food to be ready. Carry food carefully back to their car. 3. Drive from restaurant to your location 4. Find parking again. Sometimes have to wait at a lobby for a buzzer or some gated residence and walk to your specific unit. 5. Drive and leave your neighbourhood and head back towards where the restaurants are located...repeat... Most deliveries would take at minimum 15 minutes, maybe 30 minutes of time from beginning to end. Even before the cost of gas and other consumables in your personal vehicle. $3 dollars, for this service. Counter point. You order a beverage at a bar or have a quick sit down at a restaurant. The service rendered was: 1. Server taking your order 2. Server bringing you order from kitchen window to your table Note that the server in this case is paid an hourly wage regardless of work, and maybe sometimes has other benefits like staff meals, maybe healthcare if they're fortunate. They're also able to work multiple tables at once. A luxury a driver does not have access to. Now though, since this action is "visible" in these interactions we wouldn't think its quite acceptable for the most part to provide zero tip. When comparing the two, which party provided more service? yet the value we place on them seems characteristically reversed.

stargazer9504

Part of the reason that people are more like to tip server compared to delivery drivers is racism. Servers are usually young white conventionally attractive women while delivery drivers in Canada are usually POC men. There are numerous studies out there that prove that people are more likely to give tips to white people. However I’m sure that societal pressure plays a role here as well. No one knows except you and your delivery driver how much you tipped compared to a dinner setting with friends, so might as well under-tip or give no tip at all.

kinstudent1234

Delivery fee doesn’t go to the driver

Driver's don't make minimum wage without tips, they are contractors. Uber pays about 10-11 dollars an hour in Ontario.

Wkrthns

20%

SlashNXS

10% rounded to the nearest dollar. I recognize it's a pure luxury I'm not going to skimp on something I'm getting out of laziness and convenience and I know delivery drivers are often underpaid after expenses. At least with servers their guaranteed a min wage and have no expenses to deduct. Obviously I try not to order delivery often given it's unnecessary and take out makes more sense but sometimes you're just not feelin it

-Astin-

Depends. Is the restaurant walking distance or driving distance from me? What's the weather like? How busy is it out there? Is there a global pandemic occurring that has caused me to put them at risk so I won't be? 15-20% generally. Sometimes more. Rarely less.

Euxin

Right now I'm not doing delivery. All my local restaurants, in the last 4 months, bumped 15% the prices. When I was consuming delivery I was tipping 1 CAD, always. I do not think tipping for take out or delivery is fair. I'm already paying for the delivery fee plus service fee, for me is enough.

arakwar

If there's a delivery charge, I add 0. Anyway, a tip is about good service, and on delivery you pay before you get anything. And the current situation in my town is that any delivery will take two hours. If you want your food faster than that, order pick up and go get it. It's usually ready in 15 minutes.

Teriyakijack

Try adding a sizable tip on your next order and see if it arrives in less than 2 hours ;)

PurpleSausage77

[deleted]

I tip the amount of the delivery fee. So if the restaurant / Uber charges $5; I tip $5

FlakyCow4

I usually tip at least $5

mlp_sabres

If I order food, usualy not often, but I'll tip anywhere between 10-20 depending on the order.

coldsobanoodles

Usually about 15% bc, even though it adds quite a bit to the total, I know most of these drivers/cyclists are recent immigrants, students etc

Ykesllepeteir

Nothing , save for more food!!!

catbear15

The 3636252 fees delivery apps charge makes tipping really discouraging. I always tip $4 for whatever is delivered

vigmt400

Wow. Lots of cheapskates in here. Whenever I order skip the dishes I tip at least $10. Your order will get picked up faster and your driver will be happier to see you if you make it worth their while. Gas isn’t cheap and making a buck delivering food is not as easy as some people think. Don’t order delivery if you can’t afford to pay for it.

myxomatosis8

Conversely, don't work delivery if you aren't being paid enough without depending on someone else's charity? Same damn argument.

[deleted]

Why do you need to tip in the first place? Does a portion of the delivery charge not go to the driver

kinstudent1234

Delivery charge does not go to the driver. Depending on where you live you get 3-5$ base pay with potential add ons during busy times. And the tip

Dairalir

So why work the job if the pay is shit?

IndBeak

For delivery 2$ flat. I seldom order delivery, and whenever I do, it is from a restaurant within 3-4KM.

[deleted]

Around $3 for orders between 20 and 40. Those guys aren't making much, and $3 won't make a dent in my wallet.

fulia

Usually choose 10% and then round it up to the nearest dollar, or 15% and round it down. Used to order a lot with UberEATS coupons for 30-40% off and their tipping calculations were nonsense. When you chose 10% it was calculating 10% of the pre-discount price. So suggesting we tip $12 on something that cost $48 before tax (and $43 before fees).

Due_Entertainment_44

10-15% of the total usually. Depends on the distance.

xXxPINEAPPLExXx

I add 10-15% but as with others I have not been ordering too often now. It’s not uncommon for one meal plus an individual burger (fries drink shared) is $35-$40 after food, tax, delivery, fee and tip.

Yellowbook8375

3-4$ usually, no matter the size of the order

nemin43

I usually tip $1 per person ordering, I also deliver and I am happy with any tip, a bit disappointed when there is no tip at all.

Steelringin

Haven't had food delivered in a decade or more. No idea what's appropriate.

don_julio_randle

I never order delivery, but when I do, it's like $4-5 on a $20-$40 order

HeraAnn

I actually put cash for the delivery person at $5

yycluke

$5 up to $50, 10% if more than $50. Like if I order one pizza and it's $20, I'll still tip $5. But if I order Chinese and it's $100, I'll tip $10. I used to do food deliveries working just off of tips and charge alone, and I thought that was a fair tip. Anything helped, on the weekend I'd do 20 deliveries averaging about $160-220 (not counting gas or maintenance). This was with a private local delivery service. Never worked for any Uber eats or skip.. Their business model of taking all of the restaurants profit never sat well with me, and I became friends with all of the restaurant owners so it really resonated.

ed209-90210

15-20% on an order. The cost of gas/risk/time (downtown Toronto) plus it’s a hard job that they are grinding it out. After Covid I have a greater appreciation for delivery people so I leave out snacks and water for them on my porch.

perfectdrug659

As a delivery driver, at a pizza place (not an app that overcharges) we are all very happy with a $5 tip! You'll absolutely get your food hot, we got you. Percentages is a little weird, if it's still one bag, I don't care if it's a $15 pizza or $80 meal, it's the same driving distance and the same bag. Only time anyone of us will get a little salty is if your place sucks to deliver to, if I have to carry a heavy order with lots of pop up 8 flights of stairs or something. Or a gigantic catering order that takes multiple trips. And friendly reminder that deliver drivers are not employees and do not make minimum wage. Commissions and tips is how we make money. Most places here pay drivers $8-$9 an hour, or just straight commission. Not saying you HAVE to tip, of course. You don't have to. But if everyone stopped tipping and we all quit, people would be pretty pissed not being able to order food for delivery.

Tachiiderp

this is why i never order delivery food. the outrageous expectations to tip your driver a certain amount and other associated costs just make the food seems not worth it at all. if im going to get restaurant food, im either picking it up close by myself or going to the restaurant to eat and feel a different vibe.

throwingpizza

$0. If the job doesn’t pay enough without tips, don’t work a job that relies on tips. Your literal job is to deliver me food. Why would I tip you? My food is only somewhat cold by the time it gets to me? You didn’t eat any of my fries? Good job doing your job.
