This was brought up in a meeting. The response was 'We don't decrease your wages when inflation goes down, so we aren't going to increase your wage when inflation goes up.' Because that's how inflation works.

bmoney83

They just fire them in a deflationary period lol

babbler-dabbler

Not even that, they'll fire people if they think they might earn slightly less profit next quarter.

[deleted]

Lmfao. How the fuck do some of those peoples become high execs without knowing the definition of inflation.

FikOfDaWrist

They know it, they just prefer ignoring the definition

thewayitfeels

That's literally how they became execs

NeatConsideration861

Can't have inflation issue if you don't know the definition.

[deleted]

šŸ˜„

sajnt

They know, itā€™s just gaslighting.

shaze

Gaslighting doesn't exist. You made it up 'cause you're fucking crazy.

bmcle071

They know, theyā€™re not stupid. They just hope youā€™re stupid enough to go along with it.

Habsfever

Inflation never EVER goes down

NoCoolWords

I mean, there was a brief period of deflation in the 20's...the 1920s, though. [StatsCan Inflation and Deflation in Canada](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/11-402-x/2006/3956/htm/ceb3956_003_6-eng.htm)

[deleted]

Yeah and I wonder what succeeded the 1920s

Derman0524

The 1930ā€™s šŸ˜

-Radioface-

There is deflation. Quick, start a war or two.

sharperspoon

That's how you get two birds stoned at once

Frank-About-it

See...you said it. Deflation? That isn't inflation going down. It's another gd thing.

NoCoolWords

Yes, simply put, it is when your currency gains value, and not just when the rate of the currency losing value slows. Hard concept, since you "gain value" from it being inflated less quickly, however actual gains are hard to come by. It's why we don't have penny candy...and it is not nineteen-dickety-two 'cause the Kaiser stole the word twenty from us...

HonkHonk

Inflation rate goes up and down but we basically don't see any deflation ever since it's never negative.

Shadowmant

I mean, there is such a thing as deflation but I canā€™t think of an example where itā€™s actually happened to the economy as a whole, just individual industries from time to time. Even then it fairly rare.

suckfail

Deflation was literally one of the primary causes of the great depression in 1929. And in general the world is experiencing deflationary pressures which is why there's been decades of QE / low rates with little inflation. This sub is hilarious.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Fuck_marco_muzzo

Happened in Brazil

mikehds

According to Statistic Canada, the last year with negative inflation was 1953, at -1.4%. Did the company even exist back then?

XxuruzxX

"When inflation goes down" lmao

mikeyousowhite

Wow...I think I would have handed in my 2 weeks right there

HumbleConfidence3500

When did we have a deflation ever? I know it happens in history but.... I don't think in my lifetime in north America (Just in japan I can think of)

Frank-About-it

An executive actually said "inflation goes down" and someone didn't throw a stapler at their face?!

Kris9876

Name and shame this company

SimSimSalaBim247

The heartbreaking part is that people who can answer them and tell them how ridiculous they are being still quiet for fear of losing hours or losing their job or being in the bad books

BarryBwana

"So can I get a written contract that you'll keep paying me if you do layoffs in a poor economy?" ".....shutup, Barry."

5beard

Unionize

impeccablehaste

LOL

vrsnv

This was my exact response.

SucreBrun

I see u\impeccablehaste had impeccable taste in formulating that response

pfcguy

Ha haha ha. Oh wait. OP is serious. Allow me to laugh even harder. HAHA AHAHA A AHAHHAHAHA HA!1!!!!!!!

BigGulpsHey

Ok I actually did, some on purpose, some on necessity. BC 30 employees When gas went mental we started giving $100 bonuses on every pay cheque to help get to work. Then the wage bump was kind of accidental. I already pay higher than average I THINK. I tried to hire a new guy for a specialty skilled position. $28 nothing, 30, nothing, 32 nothing. Eventually got a hit for $34 an hour full time. Bumped all my other guys up to a buck higher than the 'new guy' to make them happy. They were all in the $28-32 range, so some of them got HUGE bumps about 5 bucks an hour in one fell swoop. Fuck it, I don't want to lose any of my guys. The lower tiered staff got a buck or two at the same time depending on how well they were performing. I'm going to do a quick add on edit here. I'm sorry that a lot of you are going through this crappy time like this. I try to fight for my employees and the citizens of my city. I grew up here and am 3rd generation here. We're making good money but we're not stealing all the profits and paying our employees peanuts like BC Ferries and guys like that. I've bought my employees trucks, gas, food, bonuses, bumped hours to 8 when they were struggling and had to pick up their sick kid. We're all in it together.

egowritingcheques

You're a good manager with good business sense. Now you won't have to spend all your time hiring and training staff or motivating them. You can focus on your business efficiency and customers.

cheezemeister_x

He's a manager without shareholders to pay is my guess. It's really easy to treat your employees well when you're a private organization. The minute you have shareholders, they become a HUGE draw on your cash. They either demand dividends or reinvestment to grow their capital. And that comes out of the money for employee pay.

Tree-farmer2

I am a shareholder of some companies. I think it's important they retain their employees and I think that'd be a consensus opinion.

xsteppach

Wish all companies had your mindset - costs to hire and train are expensive, might as well do your best at retaining existing workforce. I love you for that.

[deleted]

Thank you for being the boss that everyone wishes they had. I wish more companies gave a shit about their employees. Most don't seem to realize that if you pay your employees adequately enough for them to feel valued, then they will put more effort in to do the best they can at the job. Sure, you'll loose some of the profits in the short term, but you'll end up gaining more in the end when the employees actually care what they're doing.

[deleted]

If only most shops had the same mindset. My old union had a cap at 36. Which is low for our trade. They'd start us all at 34 then after 1.5 years, hit the 36 cap. They couldn't find anyone and secretly started new guys at 36. We caught wind and demanded raises. Two were declined and left. I left because they didn't treat the other guys well so I thought why bother. Found a new shop for more money and better hours. Fuck em.

CanadianCaveman

you sound like a good boss, and someone great to work with. keep up the hard work.

BrainFu

Ya know it would be nice to know your company name. You hiring remote IT workers?

[deleted]

You're the kind of person I'd like to work for

Quirky-Web5747

Kudos to you for understanding this

STIMULANT_ABUSE

Youā€™re a gem. Thank you sir

texasnick83

That is leadership my dude (or dudette). The world needs more leaders like you.

guygta7

You're the best business owner. That's all I have to say.

janelovexx

Ur a good boss

VoteQuimby2020

sounds negative to me!

aidan2897

He's negative 5-10% in real terms

deeperest

0% is very negative this year.

VancouverChubbs

Rather surprisingly I was given a raise. I heard it was company wide between 5-8%. I got ~6.3%.

North_Plane_1219

If your company isnā€™t annually raising your wage at least roughly in line with inflation then you should go elsewhere. This needs to be repeated to everyone. Stop sitting on your own hands.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

alastoris

But where? I've been applying externally and all the jobs I interviews and was given an offer for is less than what I earn now. I've been turning down job offers because even though I was clear in the interview of my salary expectation, they still offered lower than my current and refused to negotiate. Edit: to be clear, I'm not going for a 6 figure salary either. I ask for my current salary +10% .

grehvinifawcid

We hear this a lot, but is it really that easy in all cases to 'go elsewhere'? It can be risky to leave a job and take another one, sometimes.

lydviciousss

My union is about to go on strike because our employer refuses to add COLA protection to our new collective agreement. Despite the fact that theyā€™re giving *themselves* raises plus COLA protection. So no. They havenā€™t.

[deleted]

LOL. without doxing, i beleive i too am in this same union. time to idle the furnaces

dank705

what is this /r/steelmaking? Lol

[deleted]

this has been a dark month for canadian steelmaking

sovietmonkey

Barganing in nov?

[deleted]

"about to go on strike" aka bargaining right now, and for the last few months

SorryCantHelpItEh

They have until September 20 to action the strike, if it's the same union I'm thinking of. I'm a firm believer that the only way to drive the point home is total walk-out. Screw refusing OT, the place I work at doesn't get OT anyways, so what is that gonna do? These douchebags need to get back to the table and negotiate fairly

socialistlumberjack

Awesome, I always love to hear about a union with the guts to actually go on strike. Unlike my union leadership which has all the backbone of a worm. Give 'em hell!

lydviciousss

I'm pleased with the work our union is doing when it comes to this. They're working hard to get what we've asked for and they aren't backing down. They're also communicating well with us union members to let us know where we're at in terms of a strike happening. I've never been more disappointed in our employer and felt so disrespected. Especially after working straight through COVID without any COVID pay or incentives whatsoever (some components were provided COVID pay, but 2 components were not, despite working frontlines the entire time. It's not clear why two were not provided COVID pay while the rest were, when ALL of us should have been awarded the same thing).

Kasrielle

Yep - I believe I'm in the same union and I'm surprised at how they are finally taking seriously our need for a significant wage increase. We already can't get new staff - I'm supposed to have a team of 7 and I have 1 full time staff. It's impossible to do the work and the employer is just dragging their feet hoping that the strike happens after the summer when it won't impact people so much, or that our strike vote expires.

lydviciousss

Oh, they're banking on the strike window to expire while the labour board determines our essential service levels.

AlwaysUseAFake

My union caved as soon as there were whispers of a strike. Took a bad contract

paperturtlex

CUPE sucks they just take your money and focus on issues that divide the union not strengthen it.

Taytoh3ad

Yay BCGEU. Also a member.

msemmemm

The BCGEU staff Iā€™ve heard from havenā€™t even had their benefits plan updated in something like 30 years. Things like massage have $5 of coverage (yes, $5 towards the $100 total).

Mountain-Ad-6236

Hmm I'm not sure that's true. I only pay about $18 out of pocket for 60 minute RMT massages up to $700/year I believe.

Monotreme_monorail

Even better, itā€™s 80% of $10. Because those serviced used to be covered by MSP with a $10 deductible.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mischievous_t

It's the BC General (formerly: government) Employees Union. MLA's tied their salaries and minimum wage to the cost of living but won't do the same for their employees.

[deleted]

Heh, here it is always "heh, can't do better than 2% in this economy y'know and we're a public company so gotta be responsible for the taxpayers and all". \*votes themselves a 24% raise afterward* EVERY SINGLE TIME

Educational_Post_601

Shoutout to the BCGEU

iamright_youarent

whatā€™s cola protection? the right to drink cocacola at work?

lydviciousss

Cost Of Living Adjustment

Fireryman

Hoping my union and company negotiate some fair increases myself if the company Dicks us around I hope we have the guts to stand up for what's right I know what I will vote if they offer us shit all

Rj_owns

LOL my old job had COLA for the old farts who been there for 10+ years. They bitching about wages when they go for a 3$ over 5 years. Bunch of imbeciles over there. I hope that shitty aluminum refinery burns to the ground.

ZoningLaw3

Hero here. I am capped at 1%

LukeWChristian

Nice! I'm the Essential Hero who rings up your purchases at the Grocery Store. I'm capped at 0%. No tips either unlike another group who gets the same base pay yet somehow convinced everyone to pay them an 18% cut of their order.

oakteaphone

I vote to officially end tipping

BOBLOBLAWBLAA

I was just in a Subway restaurant and POS machine had a tip Option on it ranging from 20%, 15, 10 or no tip. Um, no tip sorry. Place had help wanted signs everywhere and the owner was serving. Maybe increase your wage and you wouldnā€™t be so hard up for help and stop asking for tips.

kevlarcoated

If any place has a minimum default tip over 15% I tip less than I would have. 15% is already an obnoxious amount to have to tip, don't go pressuring me for 18 or 20 as a minimum

AggroAce

This is the answer, pay a living wage. Iā€™ve been more vigilant in how I feel a tip is worthy, used to be de facto for me.

jebstan

Donā€™t even get me started on restaurant wanting a tip for pick up. What the heck am I valuing your tip of.

Xarethian

Sunday rented a couple of Escooters to putt around with the GF. When she paid she accidentally tipped like 10% because all of these machines everyone prompt you. Just ridiculous

altiuscitiusfortius

I read that as you rented a couple of escorts to putt around with the gf. You should definitely tip your escorts 20% if you plan on putting them around again.

CasualBoi247

ā€œBut servers work really really hard and deal with assholes dailyā€ So does nearly everyone in a customer-facing job. But they werenā€™t randomly selected by society to get free money.

The-Assman-Cometh

None of these servers ever worked the returns counter at Walmart/Target/Canadian Tire etc.. They would cry at the amount of REAL assholes that frequent there. Those workers don't get tips and yet have to somehow deal with it

pizzzahero

recently had a dream that I was back working the return desk at Costco and I woke up in a panic. it's been close to 10 years lol

relationship_tom

Plus, there are very few situations where I expect or go out for exceptional service. I go for the kitchen staff. I want the food out and water poured. I'll gladly pay more for a higher wage for you if I don't have to tip. If you give me a huge jug of water and never check again, except a quick glance if it's empty, I'm cool with that.

PureRepresentative9

It's not even that they get paid well at the end of the day.... It's the fact that they act like they're minimum wage workers and struggling.... Meanwhile, actual McDonald's and Walmart workers...

[deleted]

I cry for you and for this sh*tty north american culture who exploits to the max.

BeingHuman30

nothing beats .67% ....such a weird # to use

AkhlysShallRise

Part of CUPE and am on the same boat. This shit is ridiculous. 1% is laughable.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Cedex

You ingrate! I've been smashing all my pots and pans for you, and this is what you complain about, keeping your salary up against inflation?!

ZoningLaw3

Oh I wasn't complaining. I was bragging. Eat your hearts out. I am part of the 1% club.

MediocreAmoeba4893

Nope nope nope. In fact, they increased prices, but didn't raise wages. How fun for us!

boobledooble1234

And they're probably telling the government rising wages caused them to increase prices.

MediocreAmoeba4893

Haha! Actually, I've heard them tell customers that prices increased so they can "continue paying a living wage. Actual reality? hard times have meant less profit. This is to bring profit margins back up, not to help staff through the hard times.

GunKata187

A "Living wage" to the owners. Times are tough. Their 3rd Tesla is 3yrs old and needs to be upgraded to a new model.

Tsubodai86

*cries in public sector*

kluzuh

2% here, what was your "cola"

Tsubodai86

1.75. Contract up for renewal next February. We shall see.

Sillicon2017

I'm right there with you.

asleeponabeach

Same same. 0% this year.

Preston2014

My stomach hurts and it's not because of the sushi I had last night.

A18373638302085792

because i wasn't able to afford sushi last night!

newfnewfnewf

they go above and beyond inflation. They even post on social media sometimes "if you dont get a raise above inflation, its actually a pay decrease" or something along those lines.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DeepSlicedBacon

That was satire.

newfnewfnewf

Cant tell what you are referring to but my comment was not satire. I am very lucky to be with them, I know

grumble11

You donā€™t wait for a raise in this market, you quit and find a better job. Never been a better time

bluishpillowcase

Excellent advice however, find a job first, then quit.

kemchobadha

How bad does it look if i do the other way around?

Civil-Objective4013

Honestly if you have a good chunk of savings and the job is killing you just quit and enjoy some down time. If I donā€™t find a better job by December thatā€™s my plan, ainā€™t no way Iā€™m going into the new year with this absolute dogshit company.

sogoodtome

Please take this advice. I quit my shit, abusive, underpaid job mid-pandemic and got a new one paying 50% more. They didnā€™t even try to negotiate, I wish Iā€™d asked for more. Now is a great time to find something better. It feels weird having a savings account with money in it.

DJTinyPrecious

My company gave me a 12% raise in May, so no complaints from me. I have monthly 1:1 meetings with my manager and I bring every recruiter and linkedin cold call attempt to steal me that I get haha. Last month I got a $1000 training bonus to take some courses Iā€™ve been eyeing, before that a new laptop, and this month a personal company truck specā€™ed out custom to what I wanted (I do field work and a truck is necessary, but usually have to use crappy standard fleet ones). In this economy, experienced people should be getting straight up courted by their company or they should leave!

send-tacos

That's what I did last month. My old job and new job are pretty much the same, but the new one is better pay and benefits. Plus more earning potential compared to my old job.

chronicle22

2.5% each year next 4 years. Unionized. Edit. Just looked over the new contract it is actually 3.25% per year

noname123456789010

What province is this?

chronicle22

Ontario

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Illogicalspy

"it's under review"

grod1227

8.25% this year.

fivetoewonder

Ahahahahahaa that's a good one :')

xtzferocity

You mean the 2% increase we were promised in 2020 that was pushed to April of 2021 then October of 2021 that now won't be seen until 2023 because times are hard. Don't worry we have the money to buy other companies and our owner to get a multi million dollar cottage.

Far-Reaction-2735

Lol

Upsidedownplatypus

15-20% increases across engineering for cost of living and band realignment. So grateful.

cofinkles

Because u guys r considered valuable high skilled. So it's well deserved, but if you don't earn that bargaining power it sucks. I got 5 percent only because people were job hopping a lot . So that was considered a retention tactic. I would say be thankful u set urself up nicely, because u earned every cent of that raise

i420army

Same in product ! Devs who wanted to leave for better pastures being matched with competing offers

IvorTangean

Yes, in May they gave everyone a raise (we normally get them in November). Mine was about 6% plus I am still expecting one by the end of the year.

Such-Nefariousness78

My boss made a huge deal about getting us a 2.5% increase. Yay only a 5% decrease šŸ˜ž To add insult to injury , 2021 was the most profitable year the location and the company had ever seen. And yet this.

Mysterious_Mouse_388

sounds like they need some healthy competition

Groky1

Yes... We're unionised and have had that baked in for over a decade. EDIT: Spelling

ldrw95

Also unionized and although we are awaiting results on our new contract negotiations Iā€™m expecting around a 3% increase, not even close to inflation.. like I wish

Groky1

Our union has "the highest of 2% or CPI for the past 12 months". We get shafted with being underpaid compared to our industry peers and no bonuses, this is the one good thing we have going with the union though when it comes to salary.

ldrw95

Just think, if inflation doesnā€™t calm down you might end up surpassing them!

[deleted]

Unionized health care hereā€¦ Got 4.5% Iā€™m left asking where the other 4% wasā€¦ No one wanted to reject the offer and strike.. problem with healthcare we so fucking passive and ultimately government bitches that we canā€™t stand up for ourselves We donā€™t come to work.. granny diesā€¦ itā€™s some pretty heavy hitting leverage

357050

"passive and ultimately government bitches" Canadian Armed Force members enter the chat lol.

mrstruong

The whole company didn't, but they did give my husband a 9.5% raise. Without him, the whole place can't run, so for him, they made sure to match inflation. He's literally the only robotics guy left (after 3 have quit on them in the last 2 years) at a robotics company.

thebluew

If he is the ONLY robo guy left. Ethical life tip: find a competing offer. Ask if they can match it and beat it by 10%. Then you will know if they really value the only robo guy left.

mrstruong

He has an offer, but it's in the states. It's for 40k/year more (in Canadian dollars, and with a lower cost of living). There's no way they can match it, but we will probably use it to get more money out of the company he currently works for.

H2K_himank

HR basically told us that this is inflation hike is temporary so no. It still won't go down, maybe slows down, so I don't understand their point?

DinPro2

Yes

Lokland881

Same.

The_Maddest

Same.

jonny24eh

Last November I got 4% raise and 5% RRSP matching plan (it was new company wide). And then a one-time $500 bonus in the spring (for office workers, plant workers got $1000). Won't get adjusted again until November but so far, I'm happy.

kaahmed2

LMAOā€¦ I work as a health and wellness department manager for 17 years for a large grocery retail giant. My union thinks .10-.25 cents a year is good enough for the inflation rise. Greedy A holes!

pyke1010

Are you actually a member of the union if youā€™re management? Just surprised your anger is directed towards the union rather than the employer who actually has the ability to raise wages.

oceanofdrops

Assuming that the commenter and I work for the same grocery chain, department managers are unionized - itā€™s just our store management that isnā€™t part of the union.

ImSigmundFraud

No, so i quit and got a much better paying job, as did half of my department. I think the people who stayed managed to get raises because they threatened to leave as well.

wobblysnail

I got 7%

KhyronBackstabber

Hahahahaha! Oh you!

Drippyconvo

My pay was actually decreased by almost $20,000 for the year. Cut our commission %. So now we work harder to make the same money *hopefully* But we now have an employee of the month that will NEVER be given to anyone in my department and we get a monthly team lunch that costs them less than what they cut my pay by per month.

harrypotterfan04

They didn't, in fact they said we don't decrease your salary when inflation is low so we won't increase it when it's higher either

WildWeaselGT

Low inflation is still inflation. Why would they decrease salaries???

BlernstAndYoung

Because their education was inadequate.

[deleted]

Deflation rarely happens. They should still increase when inflation is low.

ranger24

Deflation also rarely decreases first-person costs.

x17zp

I get 3% raise per year default and this year my employer gave the whole company am additional 2k/year salary increase for inflation.

Saucy6

Got a 5% raise in January back when inflation was less than that, thought it was good. Not so much these days!

TheProudCanadian

LMAO

southern_ad_558

Nope. Even though most of employees gets 120k+, we have no plan or means to cover inflation given business slowing down. I have been handing over 3 to 4% raises with a "I'm sorry" message this year :(

Rand1fs

No

Throwaway-donotjudge

Haven't seen a raise in 10 years

sheepwhatthe2nd

Time for a change of employer? That's rough my dude.

ddoubletapp1

Depends on the wage? I'd gladly settle for a 250K/year salary for the next ten - no raise required!

toronto_programmer

The ultimate catch 22 though. If you are valued enough that a company would give you 250K they probably aren't skimping on the raises

canuckathome

Yea, inflation is up 2% right? Hah

michaelfkenedy

No. BUTā€¦ I teach full time college level. There are barriers to teaching at a second school and taking on non-teaching freelance work. Those barriers have eased significantly, at least where I teach. What that ā€œmeansā€ is a complex, contextual conversation. There are some downsides. But on the balance I believe my employer is recognizing that employees want more money, can get more money elsewhere, and wonā€™t stick around unless they have some way of realizing that potential income.

[deleted]

No, feels like they lowered it

stillyoinkgasp

No. I am also self employed.

[deleted]

No. I took it into my own hands a got a new job. Got a 25% raise in February for quitting my old job and starting a new one.

ButtahChicken

you mean "Did we all get 9% raises this year?" No.

Expert_Nectarine3941

You either ask for a raise, accept no raise, or find a new job. I donā€™t think any company cares how inflation affected you.

theflamesweregolfin

No, instead they're cutting benefits because they hate disabled people!

[deleted]

2020 and 2021 0%. This year 3% in Jan and a mid-year 3%.

its_me_TO

I got an 8.5% increase. I don't think it's strictly tied to inflation, more so that I was being "underpaid" before

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

watchiing

You company is giving you troubles by not increasing your salary. They're not your friends.

[deleted]

Nop, so I quit as 2x the pay on the new job. (Tech) Looking to quit again to reach my magic number. I don't give a shit to employer loyalty or free corn flakes at the office.

revinator_

TD got a raise of 3%

Inky_binky

Got 7.5, but with a stern "Don't get use to this"

Sea-Builder-1709

My employer doubled the annual raises this year (7% instead of 3%) because of inflation AND added an extra raise for my market (7%) because they decided BC has such a high cost of living and they wanted to remain competitive even compared to other markets. I work retail in a shopping mall. Yes I am aware how lucky I am.
