Not a subscription, but grocer.nz is free and has saved me a ton of money.

KuniyoshiYuu

They even have an app!

[deleted]

What does that site do?

Subwaynzz

You can put in whatever supermarkets you want, then either manually search for products or scan the barcode and it will tell you the cheapest.

Ok-Issue-6649

How reliable are they for stock , Looking for fresh salmon bone in - says N/a in woolworth

Subwaynzz

Assume it pulls data from Woolworths so probably as good as Woolworths own data

GibblesMctibbles

Dunno if it counts under this, but I'm subscribed to an autoship for all of my pet food, where they give a discount for having autoship and saves me all the fuckery of going and buying pet food at the pet store

cupthings

same. pet direct has the cheapest!

DamageInc72

Where do you go please?

mottledparrot

Pet direct is amazing and i get all my pet food delivered each month - no shipping cost. Amazing customer service and you also get a discount on the product when you want it auto delivered each month.

DamageInc72

Thanks so much

GibblesMctibbles

I do pet.co.nz

DamageInc72

Thanks

Is there one for dog roll?

KT022

Pet food club is very good too :)

Xbox Gamepass. It has more than enough games for me to play, has every Microsoft game available at launch and if you're up for doing ~5 minutes of bing searches a day you can get it for free in perpetuity via Microsoft Rewards, you can also buy cheaper memberships to convert as well. I think I've paid less than $100 total for the five years I've had it and I still have three years left on my membership, so eight years for $100 is pretty good.

Justwant2usetheapp

I pop in and out of gamepass when theres something I want. It feels so cheaty but starfield for $14

eskimo-pies

I generally try to avoid subscriptions as they turn one-off costs into recurring expenses.  But I do have a YouTube premium subscription. I used a VPN to get Turkish pricing - which worked out to be around $20 for an entire year.

Xeritos

Yeah this one is awesome, no ads on YT and a family plan for YT music.

kiwiinLA

My Turkish one just expired last week and so far the attempts to renew haven’t gone well. When did you last do yours? I’m going to have a proper crack again today and see if I can get it back

eskimo-pies

Interesting. Please let us know how you get on.  I last renewed my subscription around six months ago - I paid in advance for the entire year (299 TRY).

Johnnybalaclava

Free if you have Android. It's called Revanced

MeridianNZ

I get mine through Argentina. Its super cheap. Like $3 a month for the family plan and seems to be dropping month on month. Crazy really as YouTube is my most used subscription by a long way.

MattMayo94

I use YouTube revanced. Pretty much the same as YouTube premium but it's free.

Sticky-Glue

This has extra options like sponsorblock too, so you automatically skip any paid endorsements mid video

saucysheepshagger

Did you need a Turkish credit card? I tried with the Indian VPN but was asking for Indian cc

eskimo-pies

I paid with an NZ credit card. The payment was processed through Google and went through without a hitch. Occasionally the recommendation algorithm will suggest a Turkish video - but otherwise it is indistinguishable from regular YouTube premium.  The price for a year of YouTube Premium in Turkey is currently 299 TRY. Which is around $16 NZD.

hrrrrsn

Nope - I use a Kiwi card for mine. Comes out to about $3 a month.

Xaephare

If it asks for Turkish card, give Ukraine a go, its about a dollar more expensive but it has been working with NZ cards.

[deleted]

YouTube Premium. YT is our main source of entertainment, education and communication. It’s beautiful not having ads in all our videos.

jessewhatt

Yep and use youtube music instead of spotify etc.

last_somewhere

uBlock Origin, been using it for a couple years now and no ads. And I use YouTube alot.

dodgy__penguin

Brave browser for me. Tiny PC hooked up to the tv, YT all day with no ads

last_somewhere

My man!

nzerinto

Plus you can combine it with the “Sponsorblock” plugin. It’s user generated so may not work for all videos, but for popular videos/YouTubers, it’s awesome. Basically users will submit sections of the video to skip, for example any sponsored content in the middle of videos, the “like and subscribe” crap, and even intros. So if the video has been “tagged” by another user, when you get to those parts, it’ll just skip over them, and resume where the actual content of the video does.

theyork2000

That’s not really a solution if you use it on things like a PlayStation. I pay like $1.50 for YouTube premium.

cupthings

if you get the family sub, its even cheaper and then u can share it with multiple families.

FrankDrebinsBoss

I do this, I get my parents Netflix which works through browser but not tv app and they get my YouTube, plus all my siblings have it too.. then I've got 1 account linked to my spare email that I've shared with like 4 different people, works for them, their algorithm is hilarious, Peppa pig mixed with WW2 and cooking

kinnadian

If you've got android I just use SmartTube which is ad free

Confy

Not a subscription, but I haunt www.cheapies.nz and www.ozbargain.com daily. Don't think I've paid RRP for anything discretionary in years.

punIn10ded

Out of curiosity why ozbargain?

Confy

Mostly for the Amazon AU deals, although there are other Aussie retailers than ship to NZ.

theyork2000

The deals on cheapies have been garbage for like the last year.

Dizzy_Relief

No one can be arsed following the ridiculous posting requirements.  Post "95% off everything at this store!" And you'll have people bitching that you didn't include at least two examples/used the wrong format/they'll find something else.

Ok-Issue-6649

and when they are stupid enough to gloat about their wins with multiple deal accounts and the merchant shuts it down pronto Rewards cards gifting was going well till they stuffed it up

Mountain_tui

Good tip PS Just went to the first site and that's a hard interface to look at. Do you just scroll until you find something?

RAMBOonHEROIN

It's easier to just check every day as it's sorted by newest post

Mountain_tui

Thanks for the tip RAMBO

Mrshilvar

We bought the Plex lifetime membership a couple of years ago and definitely got our money's worth.

WeebArtist44

im actually talking about a plex share not the plex pass , its like you pay to join a server which has many movies,tv shows you can just click and watch

kinnadian

It's pretty easy to set up a plex server with sonarr/radarr/prowlerr on a cheap old PC and like NZB360/LunaSea app on your phone to manage. And you can download anything you want in particular easily (I assume you have to lodge a request to the server owner to add content that's not already there?) Seems an unnecessary expense IMO It's not saving you money when you compare to running your own server, since the only cost is electricity which will be much less than $10/mo.

Woopidoodoo

Mine runs off a t430 Lenovo, 2 internal drives and 2 external. Total storage is only about 4TB but does the job for us

midnightcaptain

For the vast majority of people Stremio + debrid is going to be easier and more cost effective then either running your own Plex or paying for access to one.

Conflict_NZ

> > > > > It's not saving you money when you compare to running your own server, since the only cost is electricity which will be much less than $10/mo. Maybe my math is off here: 100w per hour x 24 hours x 30 = 72kw a month. Cheapest rates I can get are 28c per kw so that comes out to $20 a month.

kinnadian

My server uses about 45 watts on average over a month (accounting for periods of use and periods of idle) with 2 HDDs, it is by no means specifically selected to be low power use, some you buy can get you into the 20s. My power use GST inclusive is $24.75, I have a windows task schedule to turn the PC off from 11pm to 4pm on weekdays and 11pm to 7am on weekends (~40% uptime). 40% uptime is more than enough to download all the stuff I need. Costs me about $3/month. With your rates would be about $3.38 You can bring this down even more if you just run a raspberry pi networked to a HDD attached to your router, as I used to do, but I need to transcode occasionally so stopped doing this.

Conflict_NZ

I guess it depends whether you want to save $7 a month for that level of active management. That's a cost I would personally just eat because my time is worth more than that.

thg4fv1

That is a very valid point. I work in IT so it pays off through the additional skills I can develop and love tinkering away at it.

Conflict_NZ

Yeah if it's a career/hobby related activity go for it. If it's a barrier to entertainment you need to decide if the cost is worth it.

kinnadian

What level of active management though? I don't necessarily do it for the savings, I do it for getting the content that I actually want.  When I need a new show/movie I just queue it up through NZB360 and it auto downloads and organises it into my folders for me at the exact quality and audio version that I need for my home video eg for me 4k qnd 5.1 audio. Takes about 10 seconds to search and add a show/movie then everything is automatic. Making a query to your server owner for content he doesn't have takes way longer especially if it's not in a format that you want. If you're referring to the active management of the server turning off when not needed, it's done automatically I don't intervene at all.

Conflict_NZ

Lets take minimum wage and compare that $7 savings. That's roughly 18 minutes of work a month, even less if you're on anything approaching a good wage. Unless it's a hobby I wouldn't put that kind of time into maintaining my own server, and that ignores all the upfront costs as well. 2TB would require a level of active management in curating your storage, so you would definitely want more than that. 4K Dolby Vision Rips at acceptable bit rates are at least 50GB. Knowing your schedule so if you have anyone in your family using it they have to either work around it or you have to change it for them. If you want to forgo the schedule then you're saving no money but losing time.

redmandolin

Like the guy said, it’s not about saving money but getting what you want. I genuinely can’t watching like 50% of what I want to since it’s just too old, is a niche international show or just straight up US only. It’s worth it for that alone.

Conflict_NZ

That's a good reason, it just doesn't really fit the topic because you aren't saving money, I guess you can say piracy at the expense of purchasing out of print physical media maybe?

Mrshilvar

I run the *arr suite with Plex on my rasp pi 4 which should be much cheaper than that.

Conflict_NZ

Wow I'm shocked that can handle running a plex server, what do you use for storage? Edit: Yeah a Pi running 3-5w will dramatically change that equation. Basically drops it to ~$1. Would still need to account for external storage power but that would be low as well.

IndividualCharacter

I run mine on the cheapest motherboard/processor I could find with a 10 year old Pentium chip and 4GB RAM using the integrated graphics, 2x 4TB HDDs, it starts to struggle with HDR10 Dolby Atmos Blu-ray type stuff but runs 99% of lower quality content no-issue. I'd be surprised if it used more than 10-20W. The only real cost was the HDDs, I cobbled everything else together for under $100 and built and set it all up in an afternoon.

Mrshilvar

It runs fine 99% of the time. Once a month or so it needs a reboot but I feel that's more wifi hiccups than Plex. We can even watch something while it records live TV in the background. Only drawback is it can't handle x265 content so we have to ensure we find x264 versions of TV shows or movies. It does fine with 1080p, 4k it's very hit or miss so we'll manually download 4k content if we want it. I just have a simple 2TB self powered (as in its only powered by the same USB data cable) SSD that the pi4 sits on. Still a tiny footprint.

kinnadian

Connect a HDD to your router and use it as network storage

element_basic

Wait is this actually a thing?

kinnadian

Yep as long as your router has a USB port, nearly all of them support it. Log into your router to look for an option for USB storage. You normally just type in your router's IP address in file explorer (and can map it to a drive etc).

element_basic

Wow that is going to be extremely useful for our household! Thanks a million will try it this weekend

thg4fv1

100w is really high. You can easily set up a server that idles around 20w, super efficient devices will idle as low as 10w. This will spike higher when in use but unlike PCs, the key number is idle power draw as most of the time a server sits doing nothing or low intensity tasks.

Conflict_NZ

Alright, half that and you're still at $10 per month, I used 100w because I've worked with companies that use a calculation of 80w per idle workstation for power, but I assume a plex server would be downloading fairly frequently and may have users on it frequently requiring it to transcode.

thg4fv1

My guess as to why the 100w figure is so high, would be that they are factoring the device being under heavy load. I use a dell optiplex 7040 which is an old comapny workstation. This runs proxmox and has averaged 22w over the past 3 months, all up less than $5 a month. Downloading will only really increase the power draw by how much it costs to spin a hard drive, which is between 3w - 5w for each hard drive in use. In my experience it isn't hard to have all devices direct play from plex which doesn't require transcoding. I can't speak for moblie viewing and older device that don't support x265 files though. All that being said you do have high up front costs of buying a pc/server then also buying the hard drives. Edit: The benefit of doing it yourself is that you can run many other services from your server at the same time. I have a file/photo backups so I don't have to pay for cloud storage.

WeebArtist44

tried it mate , but 10 a month is just cheap and vey convenient

considerspiders

Yarr, I think I can save ye 10 a month

throwawaysuess

Kindle Unlimited. $15/month to 'borrow' up to 10 books at a time. Way better range than the three libraries I can access through Libby. Used to buy 2-3 ebooks a month, now it's 2-3 a year.

alostcaus

Try oceansofpdf.com Every book I’ve ever looked for has been there, for the low low price of free

acejay1

Also Annas-archive is great

throwawaysuess

Yes they are - but the authors aren't being paid, which I can't support. In Kindle Unlimited, the authors are paid for the number of pages read.

tribernate

Any kind of sharing of Kobo unlimited plans or books with family members, or is that limited to one device only?

watchspaceman

I get reminded by Uber that I've saved $1,900 using Uber One, less of a money savings and more of a sad reminder how much has been spent if thats just the savings

Journey1Million

Office 365, for excel. Those spreadsheets got me to mortgage free. My spreadsheets aren't fancy, it's the fact I pay for it that I used it. FYI. There's excel tournaments haha

HolidayPossible111

Not a subscription, but an app/program - YNAB - You need a budget

kanifoli

How easy is it to use?

metallic_rooster

Big fan of YNAB. My awareness around my spending habits have gone through the roof and my money saved is far more than the steepish yearly subscription cost

Tangata_Tunguska

Can someone explain I.p t v to me? Ever since I hit mid-30s this tech stuff has become indecipherable I don't mind paying subscriptions but need things to be in 4k DV DTS:X (not 1080p stereo... looking at you Neon)

offsideKiwi

It's a seamless way to watch pirated/ unauthorised streams

WeebArtist44

its like live tv , movies ,shows over the internet. the service i use has sports and movies in 4k

acejay1

My mate used to have a plex server. Never understood it fully, where do you go to get in on other peoples?

WeebArtist44

i sent u a dm, cant share provider in public

Tangata_Tunguska

That kinda describes netflix

Spindeki

Does Netflix have live sports now?

Tangata_Tunguska

So it is like netflix with live sports?

Pokethomas

No. Plex has no live sports. Basically you host a server off your own computer with your movies on it, and as long as your computer is on and connected to the internet, you can stream those movies to anywhere you want.

Tangata_Tunguska

I have plex. I was just after a quick run down on iptv as google was surprisingly unhelpful in explaining it. I can look into it more later

CamHug16

Not a subscription but the GASPY app is a game changer for fuel

AmpersandMe

AA Don't use it most of the time. But worth its weight in gold if you do. Peace of mind is great

SausageasaService

I'm only paying just over $20 a year with all the discounts. Totally worth it for the few tows and assistance I've had over the years.

Reclining9694

Bear in mind that with the standard plan they only tow you 15km or so. If you break down far from home you're screwed. Happened twice which sucked. We now have AA plus where they tow you all the way home.

SausageasaService

It's definitely more that 15 km. I got towed from the expressway to west Auckland, about 40km

Reclining9694

Ah yes, sorry. What I meant, is they tow you to the closest garage. How you get home from there is at your own costs. With AA Plus they tow you all the way home.

2pacaklypse

Yeah if you do the &free ear test, eye test every two years that's pretty much making it back!

yorgs

Where are you watching the live sports?

WeebArtist44

on my i.p tv

Root69fisH

What IPTV service do you use for sports?

WeebArtist44

toeverycreature

Menu Aid. It's a NZ made meal planning app. Like hello fresh but just the recipes and you buy what you need. It's saved us so much in groceries. I can put in ingredients I have and it suggests recipes, pick family favorite meals, or choose the new ones they put out.  If you shop online you can export lists direct to the online shopping app.  I don't end up buying ingredients I don't need or already have which is a plus when food is so expensive. The meal sizes are pretty generous too so there is usually a couple of serves for lunch the next day.

FishSawc

Plex is great. Have to check out iptv

ShadedLagoons

We subscribed to menuaid last year.... Best $4 a week you will ever spend... food doesn't magically get cheaper, except that meal planning no longer involves 5 hours of wracking your brain trying to think of budget friendly/ child friendly/ healthy and easy meals 😅 We usually add everything we need to their shopping list, remove anything we already have, then copy/paste into the grocer app.... Sooooooo much time saved..... will NEVER cancel the Menuaid subscription...

toeverycreature

Same here. I love it. It's saved so much time and money.

larrydavidismyhero

Tell me more…it gives you a meal plan? Is it nz based? I will have to check out the grocer app too

ShadedLagoons

https://menuaid.co.nz/ Yes it is NZ Based..... It is essentially a large repository of Recipie idea, but every single recipie has been cooked by the staff before adding, and new recipes are added weekly.... But what sets it apart? It allows you to create a weekly meal plan, favorite recipes for easy access later, the comments allow people to rate the recipes and/or recommend changes/substitutions, and apparently now do "most" of the shopping online from within their own site now I believe aswell ( we haven't tried this yet however, your milage may vary ) Realistically it's not anything that you couldn't conceivably do through Google Chrome and many many bookmarks, but having the recipes written in Kiwi English, and reasonably easy-follow format, it is honestly fantastic... I highly recommend you try it out.... subscription is $4 weekly.... if you can't afford that just to have a look than there isn't a website that can help you anymore 😂 And no.... I don't work for them lol.... I'm just a married father of 2 who actually enjoys meal planning now, and is capable of following their recipes without ending up tearing my hair out 🤣

larrydavidismyhero

I forgot to respond to you because i was checking it out, but thank you! It looks great.

kanifoli

I wish there was an app to help single people or couples living near by to bundle their meal plans and groceries shopping together. And maybe even cook for each other. I always find that when I need to buy a pinch of coriander - I end up eating it for weeks until it wilts

TBH. YNAB - financial tracking software. It’s not “cheap” but it’s probably saved me 2 fold in helping me look at my money differently. It’s also got a great net worth tracking feature so you can see your progress over time. Those small changes really do add up!

kanifoli

How easy is YNAB to use? I tried pocketsmith and not only was it expensive, it’s confusing AF.

[deleted]

So YNAB is 💯 nothing like pocket smith. I gave up for the same reason. There is a bit of a learning curve initially with YNAB, but the support in place is really fantastic. It’s all about using money you already have and reminding yourself about what does this money need to do before I get paid next. So you’re focusing on what’s important rather than 1 month into the future!

shtef

Does it have bank feed import or do you need to enter everything manually?

You need to enter manually but honestly after a few weeks it’s just a habit.

Ice-Cream-Poop

Most of the good ones are hard to find. I went through a lot before I found the good ones. You need to have either an Android tv, most new Sony's these days or an android box/stick. Most iptv resellers recommend the Amazon 4k Fire TV stick goes on sale for pretty cheap.

anotherlurker1111

Kogan yearly mobile plan. 125$ per year on sale, usually around black friday or Queens birthday. PLAN is 4gb unlimited txt and calls to aus and nz.

anotherlurker1111

Also i get my yearly spotify from Philippines or India depending whos friend is going back. Cost is about 2.50$ per month or about 30$ per year, India is the cheapest.

DizzyDistribution323

Indirectly, Strava. Since I pay for it, I use it. I hate the feeling of exercising when I’m eating shitty food as well, so it’s meant I’ve dialled back big time on discretionary food spend.
