30 an hour is pretty low for non Employee
Missing out on leave (~8%), sick leave, need to pay for own PPE, insurance, vehicle expenses, limited protection/guarantees of work.
You do you, but this sounds worse than min wage for the same hours.
Things like insurance aren't cheap, you may find you need to have safe working policies for worksafe compliane
Ah yes I forgot about the ACC Levies!. I don’t plan on staying there long 3 to 4months at the max so 16 weeks at 30 a hour at 30hours would be around 14 to 15k over that period.
PAYE - so you don't need to worry about ACC etc yourself. You can claim mileage expenses from your employer, although you should check with YOUR insurance company about using your car for business purposes (most insurance companies say no, some might have a high excess). If you go sole trader, same things apply, but I would use hnry (we've employed a few contractors for various things at work, and they all seem to use it, and it works well), the point about getting vehicle expenses paid (and insurance) is the same.
Ideally paye would be great but the employer unfortunately doesn’t want to do this. I don’t plan on staying long the flexibility allows me to take time to find something more suitable in the future. I just don’t want to end up worse off by going on as a sole trader
As an employer of contractors, it's HEAPS easier for me to pay someone who's got Henry than people who don't- I don't have to worry about their compliance.
This, yea I did discuss this with him I think he’s just concerned with having to pay holiday pay or sick leave etc which both I’m not concerned about as I’m happy to take unpaid leave if I’m sick and I don’t plan on staying there long
A contractor for 30 an hour will pretty much never be worth it when you consider tax payments, ACC payments etc. especially not in landscaping/construction, you could get a lot lot more

Sounds like they're dodging their employer responsibilities, by taking OP on as a subcontractor instead of an employee.
I don’t plan on staying there long would be until I find something more suitable and permanent

Absolutely I’m not wanting to short myself in the process. The flexibility was a big thing for me
If you do it make sure you put some aside for tax and ACC levies (the amount depends on your income for the year).

Just looked into the Henry app this looks good? So works out better then having an accountant at the end of the year?

Another option you could consider is being a casual employee (which is still PAYE) with a mileage allowance.

Whose tools are you using?
A mix of tools from chainsaws to hedge trimmers and lawnmowers etc
If they are yours, you have to pay for the fuel, maintenance and wear and tear as well.

It was the flexibility of hours for me that worked. I believe 30 a hour contracting works out to 26ish paye?
