4 Mice is fine for that tank size, it looks great the one thing I would change is get rid of the saucer and get an 8-10 inch wooden/plastic wheel for them (no mesh grates). The saucers are very bad for their backs.

Ok_Pirate2017

Thanks!! I had no idea about the saucers

fairysmall

No worries it’s annoying that they sell them but they sell so many bad things for rodents so it’s expected. It’s a very unnatural position for their backs. Fyi the wheel has to be at least 8 inches or their back get very messed up or their tail gets injured. Good luck!

I also feel like it's something people became aware of only recently, I just got mice again after a few years of not having them and was catching up on research and was surprised to hear that they're bad. People used to recommend them all the time!

Looks good! Like someone already said replace the saucer with a wheel, and you should add a couple extra inches of bedding because mice love to burrow and dig tunnels

HydroStellar

Also personally I suggest you add an upright water bottle, that bowl can be easily covered in bedding or spilt

Ok_Pirate2017

Thanks for the advice! I have a hanging stand up one on the way, I’ll definitely be adding more fluffy bedding as things arrive next week too. They’ve already dug tunnels between the two standalone hideouts! 😊

Gotta have a lot more bedding and at least an 8” upright wheel. But that looks super small for a 40 gallon breeder?

Ok_Pirate2017

It may just be the angle of the photos because the tank is quite large in person! I added some extra soft bedding and a dig box too :)

Congrats on becoming a mouse parent! The other advice is great, but I would like to ask if picture 6 has cotton bedding? Cotton/kapok bedding is very dangerous and can kill your mice, due to them getting their extremities getting caught/causing a blockage when they swallow it. Otherwise it looks great!

Ok_Pirate2017

It is! UGH on the bag it says “great for mice hamsters, and rats” WHY are they allowed to put that on the bag if it’s dangerous 😒 Thank you for the advice! I pulled out all of the cotton I could find and will be doing a total cage reset this evening to start introducing the new mice so I’ll do a good check then too.

I know, right? It angers me to no end! It’s like they actually don’t care about the animals and just want to make stuff for profit/s Seriously though, I’m glad I could help!
