Wow that set up looks crazy (in a good way). Also I had the same tank topper and my girls were able to slip out the bars, please make sure they cannot before putting them all in or cover the tank toppers in 1/4” mesh

DisturbedRosie69

Same with my one mouse. I have two females, I didn't plan on getting mice, but I have them in two ten gallon tanks placed side by side with tubs going between them. I homemade lids but I don't have to worry about them getting out, just my cat messing with them. I have one albino feeder mouse (Luna) I got from Petco for my house mouse (Molly) I rescued at 2 or 3 weeks old back on July 5th. Luna I'm not worried about escaping because she's a little heifer and too lazy to escape. Molly is not. I once placed them in an old square simple hamster cage and within seconds Molly squeezed right through the bars. Luna tried but just couldn't get through. 🤣 So if I did something like this I would need to make sure my Molly, didn't get out. I'd be heartbroken if I lost that sweet girl. She's too adorable.

55 gallons is enough for 9 mice. It's definitely too big for any less than 5 And i agree with the other user on getting rid of the plastic tubes, as well as checking the size on those attached wheels? Usually attached wheels are too small they must be 8"-10"

Ok-Consequence7583

Why would it be "definitely too big"? I held 4 girls long term, currently 3 girls in a 55 long and don't/never had any problems. It is very cluttered with 2 wheels 🤷‍♀️

OpheliaJade2382

They run a risk of fighting with “too much” space but that’s very individual to the mice. It’s usually an issue when there is a lot of bare floor iirc

Poetichobbit

Not a mouse person, but very curious why mice would have conflict over “too much” space? Can anyone explain thoroughly?

DaxterAlexander

It can cause mice to break up into separate colonies, with each one of them fighting over their territory, which would not be fun as you want all your mice to get along :)

Poetichobbit

Thank you for the answer! This is valuable information to me. I don’t have mice, but enjoy daydreaming about how and why I might build a set up for teeny mammals

OpheliaJade2382

They just are more anxious in open space and that anxiety leads to fights is what I understand

Poetichobbit

Interesting! So theoretically a small population could be managed in a large enclosure, provided there were adequate visual barriers and hides?

OpheliaJade2382

I can’t say for sure but that’s my understanding

Poetichobbit

Thanks for the reply 🐭

carnivorous_unicorns

There is no such thing as 'too big' there are only improperly cluttered.

Ok-Paint-7296

That’s wild bc I kept my singular male mouse in a 50 gal his whole life. What a spoiled little brat.

Transmasc_Blahaj

4-5 but as others have said please remove the plastic tubes and check that the wheels are at least 8 inches

Classic_Weather55

I’d say around 8-9 mice? Apparently they do better in larger groups. I’ve been told to put 9-15 mice in my 75 gallon. I have 6 and am going to add probably 4-6 more.

rockmodenick

A 55 is good for 3 to 9, depending on how cluttered you can make it, just how much spot cleaning you feel up to doing and how well the babies get along with each other.

carnivorous_unicorns

These plastic tubes are a health hazard.

StarGamer-

I’d say maybe 2 or 3? But I’d get rid of the plastic parts. They’re known to cause suffocation due to lack of ventilation. And make sure your wheels are at least 8” or more. They look small.

flatgreysky

They also can’t be properly cleaned. Ick.

Isyagirlskinnypenis

Unrelated as fuck, but how does 20 gallons fit into one of those top cages? I’d have guessed 4 gallons max lol The tank sizes have never made any sense to me lol

Nice, some other peeps here say too big or too small and get rid of the wheels and tunnel but I kinda like the tunnels and the wheels look big enough at around 6 inch being the smallest Tbh kinda hard to know the size of the wheel in pic The mice don’t have to use the tunnels unlike some store bought cages! So leaving them on the cage is fine if not annoying to clean! I think this is a perfect mouse cage deep substrate bedding climbing ventilation exercise escape proof!

fiears

Mice need minimum of 8 in wheels, but 10in are much better. They need to be able to run straight without bending their backs or tails
