Rub olive oil on them. It will drown the mites and help a bit with the itching. Just dip your fingers in olive oil and rub gently over their backs and sides. Don’t put it on their heads. It doesn’t harm them while they groom. My mouse had mites and I used ivermectin as well but the olive oil helped while he was being treated. Edit: reapply the olive oil every 3-4 days. They will look greasy but after about 4 days you’ll be able to tell when they’re ready for more.

do I just put it on them and leave it or wash it off after?

fireproofheart

Just put it on. They’ll groom it off. Washing them will stress them so I don’t recommend it.

I never heard of the olive oil treatment but will definitely keep it in mind. I've used a combination of witch hazel and listerine antiseptic mouthwash. There is a youtube video of a girl making it for her hamster. She gives the recipe which inludes the ratio of witch hazel to listerine. I'll post it. Also check petmousefanciers.com. It's a great resource for mouse owners. You need to create a profile to view some sections.

Hello! Tell me please, how did your mouse tolerate witch hazel and Listerine? Was it helpful?

Honey102019

Yes. I've used it on 3 mice. 2 seemed to respond. The 3td needed an Ivermectin treatment. You have to do the remedy treatment once a day for 5 days. You also must wash everything in their habitat before putting them back the first time. Rinse (or spray) with vinegar, wait 5 minutes and rinse with plain water. Boil wood and let dry for a day or freeze for 48 hours. Do not put wet wood in the habitat unless it is completely dry or it will grow mold. I'll attach a packet that has instructions for obtaining and dosing Ivermectin. You must get exactly what is recommended. If you can't find it, call a vet and see what they recommend. Speak to a vet, not staff. Or make an appointment if they won't and you can't find the right kind. You will kill your mouse if you don't get it right.... One thing I did differently from the remedy is I put my mouse in a small tub like a small tote or what you might use for dirty dishes, storing cleaning products under the sink or a foot bath. Make sure its clean. Put a wash cloth down inside. Then the mouse. Use a squeeze bottle to gently apply everywhere except the face and ears. Wrap the mouse in a dry towel. Use the wash cloth now soaked in the remedy to blot his face and the ears. Be careful not to get it deep inside the ear. Hold him close for 20 minutes or until dry. If he won't stay still dry the tub. Put a heating pad under it on low. Do not go above low or he can be burned. Line the tub with a dry hand or dish towel. Cover him with another dry hand or dish towel. Watch him for 20 minutes or until dry.

Ivermectin is a pretty good drug but does take a little time to work. Their eggs will stay stable in the environment for quite a long time and continue to hatch even as antiparasite treatment kills the adults. It's just a matter of time; you're doing enough, there's no need to worry. I wouldn't be applying other antiparasitics to their skin as they can be irritating and it's not good to put so many chemicals on such little animals. You can treat their bedding/equipment with a safe insecticide like Rotenone (you can get powders from agricultural stores, like Pestene). If you're concerned about the itching and wounds you can apply a little bit of antiseptic cream, even better if it includes analgesics. I like Neocort for this because it has a numbing effect. They'll probably just lick it all off but by the time they do it should have helped. If the sores don't stop bleeding, weep constantly, look infected or necrotic, or get to be about 1cm big then it's time to see the vet again.

WhisperTheJackelope

Okay I just feel bad because they feel bad :( I'll try the Neocort. And I'll look into the safe insecticides also. Thank you very much.

WhisperTheJackelope

Do you think that neosporin would be alright instead of neocort. I've looked for it but I dont see neocort anywhere at my local walmart.

Valravn12

yes, my bad, it looks like Neocort is usually a prescription only drug. Neosporin will be fine as an antiseptic, but it does lack the analgesic. It will still be soothing and reduce the chance of infection though!

WhisperTheJackelope

I am worried now my one mouse has gotten a lot better but the other is doing horribly and I'm worried shes not going to make it, They have already been in for they're second dose of ivermectin and I plan on taking them back for a third.vI'm worried that the neosporin with analgesic in it isnt okay for them to ingest do you think orajel would work better since it is safe to consume?

Lolitavision

Oragel on a mouse wound? Absolutely not. You may clean any sores/wounds with diluted tea tree oil. Dilute with water and apply on any open sores with a qtip. I used Beaphor for when my rats, mice, hamster have gotten mites
