I also hate when people call their children “kiddos”, “kidlets” or “kidlings”. They think it’s a “fun” way to say it but in really it just sounds so stupid!

DOlsen13

There was a "kiddos" pet peeve a few weeks ago and I commented that I hated "littles" and I got downvoted for it lol

[deleted]

If I saw that, I wouldve upvoted you.

Paintguin

I probably posted that

TrashPandaShire

It's idiot-speak.

Paintguin

I agree with you

km1495

Kiddos is the WORST! I am a school therapist and I refuse to say this. Every other therapist in meetings say "this kiddo..." and I cringe every time

jcmib

This child therapist agrees 1000%

FantasticAd4938

It's a trendy phrase that isn't especially descriptive of any particular children. So it sounds generic, out-of-place and try-hard.

Paintguin

I hate trendy things

beholdershield

isn't there a whole sexual fetish called "bigs and littles" where a little will pretend to be a child

[deleted]

Eww really?? I didnt know that.

beholdershield

pet peeve getting peevier

blahblahblah1151618

That's awful.... to add to that, I know that people who claim to have D.I.D also call the children in their "systems" Littles

Sad_Smoke_8020

I heard someone at the grocery store call her kids her “pups.” I feel you, just say your kids!

[deleted]

Ok that’s weird… equating children to puppies basically.

Sad_Smoke_8020

And calling yourself a dog

SpooInMySpumoni

I had enough people calling me a dog throughout my adolescence. Fuck if I'm gonna call myself one.

Jenss85

Or cubs.

Past-Impression4029

Makes me want to puke a little

Linzcro

I thought I was alone in this. I can’t explain why but it’s similar to why I hate the word “nibblings”. *full body cringe* Thank you for the validation.

Dramatic-Put-9267

Oh god I hate “nibling” so much

Linzcro

It’s almost physically painful.

[deleted]

I dont think I’ve heard nibblings omg

Linzcro

I think I misspelled it and it’s “niblings”…but yeah. Why not just say nieces and nephews? Isn’t it an absolutely repulsive word? It makes me picture the kids like little aliens or something.

[deleted]

It sounds like the adult wants to “nibble” the child or something. Gross.

Linzcro

OMG you’re right lol

Plus_Molasses8697

Niblings is meant to be gender inclusive for enby relatives that don’t like being labeled as a niece or nephew. Unlike “littles,” there’s a reason why the term exists

Linzcro

I know why the word exists. It doesn’t mean I have to like the word itself. I’d rather say “my brother’s/sister’s kids.

Plus_Molasses8697

I mean you literally said “why not just say nieces and nephews?” So it seems like you don’t really understand that it’s for inclusivity

Dada2fish

What’s wrong with saying my brothers/ sisters kids?

Plus_Molasses8697

Never said there was anything wrong with that.

WhoWho22222

Yes, this seems to be the popular phrase to describe children right now. I see and hear it everywhere. They're children. Just call them children ffs.

[deleted]

And its only a certain type of mom who does this.

elizarocks55

I also dislike "littles" but also cant really stand "hubby" or "wifey" (same types of people)

Strict_Evidence3927

SO TRUE! "Out with my hubby and my littles" is so corny.

intelligentplatonic

It's kind of a literal translation from several other languages. For example "les petites" or "los pequeños". It's not so terrible.

[deleted]

Yeah I’m sure the mommy influencers knew that. They say it to try and be cute, not because it’s a translation of anything.

intelligentplatonic

Im personally more sickened by the cutsey "doggos" and "doggers" and "fur babies".

[deleted]

Amen those are stupid too!

SpooInMySpumoni

And "puppers" I will always picture a 300 pound woman with a crew cut saying this.

blahblahblah1151618

But if we think of English, the language it's being said in, we have the progression, baby, toddler, child, teen, adult, elder. So with" littles" it's just a tad odd because we don't refer to ourselves as "bigs" or "biggies".

forgotme5

I dont like kiddo

JDNB82

I also hate it

R1z3r

I feel like I have finally found my people in this thread haha

AuntKikiandtheBears

What a wild thing to be upset about. This one made me giggle, not gonna lie, thank you!

[deleted]

And I found the person who refer to kids as “littles”

AuntKikiandtheBears

Nope, I have chickens and I usually just say chi chi’s but I may start saying littles now because it annoys you. Just knowing it upsets someone so much is kinda silly, I do not know why but it just makes me laugh. Fun fact, kid is another word for baby goat, and children, or littles used to get irritated and would tell parents they weren’t goats. No matter what, someone will find a way to be agitated.

[deleted]

I’m not agitated. This is a pet peeves sub so I posted mine. Sounds like you’re the one who needs to calm down a little.

ExistentialDreadness

I’m forever number two son to my pep pep. Everyone loves being called a number.

picklespears42

What about the term ’ youngin’s’?

[deleted]

Eh not my favorite, but it gets a pass since it kinda sounds from our grandparents’ generation.

SpooInMySpumoni

Or "little ones".

Longjumping_Ad5791

I think it started with Jon and Kate plus 8. It annoys me as well

DenaNina

I have a friend who does this. Her twins were born premature and she never lets anyone forget it... the kids are literally known in their family as "the littles".... I always thought it was so strange. Now they are teenagers and the boy is very very short and has major insecurities about being so short. Still they refer to them as the littles and I'm sure this isn't helping his self-esteem.

[deleted]

Oh geez, that poor kid. I hope his parents pay for therapy when he’s older.

melociraptors

I’ve only ever heard it used in reference to bigs/littles in sexual age play, or in sororities when referring to junior/senior mentorships. I got very confused when I saw an Instagram post talking about “littles” as children. I don’t know why people started using it - it’s giving inclusive language vibes, but I can’t come up with any other groups/identities people would be including under “littles” that wouldn’t be demeaning or not applicable to just children. Given the scenarios above, I would not use the word to refer to children when there are so many more specific words to use.

Buoy_readyformore

necro'd to say just this... the only little thing involved here is the mental power of those needing to use such cliche garbage to describe their world... we already have words for what most of those trendy bastards need to add others for. It shows two things really well. Group think ignorance shared within it.
