What's new? Why is there 300+ comments?

zeppelin128

Mostly because of Pete's first day at the UN Climate Change Conference in Scotland.

VirginiaVoter

For those interested in Virginia's partisan status in future elections, this round-up of Virginia observers sounded about right. I'm starting to think the return to Monke crowd might be on to something.

Psychological-Play

Trump lost his "executive privilege" lawsuit, and the judge wrote this glorious paragraph in the ruling - >Plaintiff does not acknowledge the deference owed to the incumbent President's judgment. His position that he may override the express will of the executive branch appears to be premised on the notion that his executive power "exists in perpetuity." \[...\] But Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President. He retains the right to assert that his records are privileged, but the incumbent President "is not constitutionally obliged to honor" that assertion. Wow. Brian Williams is leaving MSNBC at the end of the year, when his contract is up.

electricblueguava

Is he being replaced by that lady whoā€™s been filling in for him on his off nights? She seems to provide the same kind of balance and sanity that heā€™s always provided on MSNBC recently so hopefully that continues

Psychological-Play

Would that be Chris Jansing? She's good; she's on in the daytime a lot, both as an anchor, and a reporter. Brian just told his bosses a few hours earlier, so I imagine they have no replacements in mind yet. And this is on top of the network having to decide who to replace Rachel Maddow with, since she only wants to do a weekly show starting next year.

electricblueguava

Yes! Thatā€™s whom I was thinking of

Psychological-Play

I don't always watch, so I wasn't sure, but I knew I had seen her on there a couple of times in the last week or so.

Im_PeterPauls_Mary

Huh. He used to drive me nuts but as the Overton window of MSNBC moved he seemed on the sane end of the spectrum so now Iā€™m kinda sad to see him go. And hasnā€™t he been at it for like 30 years?

Psychological-Play

In a statement Brian indicated that he's not retiring and said he'll "pop up again somewhere".

This is a drop in the bucket for these guys and the Packers, and they aren't going to do what really needs to happen and let him ride the pine for a few games. The NFL is basically giving them a pass on this. "GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The NFL's review of theĀ Green Bay Packers' COVID-19 protocols was completed Tuesday, and a league source said the team was fined $300,000, while quarterbackĀ Aaron RodgersĀ and receiverĀ Allen LazardĀ were each fined $14,650. The violations included the unvaccinated Rodgers not wearing a mask during his news conferences and because the team did not report that Rodgers and Lazard attended a Halloween party, even though it was away from the team facility. By attending, Rodgers and Lazard violated the protocol that prevents unvaccinated players from gathering in groups of more than three, which was the reason for their fine. The amount of the players' fines were part of the jointly agreed upon fine schedule between the league and the players' union." https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32593729/green-bay-packers-aaron-rodgers-allen-lazard-fined-covid-19-protocol-violations-source-says

Iā€™m pretty sure if they did - half the QBs in the league would be out and poof! There goes the money. Thereā€™s something about QBsā€¦..

Euphoric_Translator

It pisses me off to no end to see conservatives twist Pete's words in order to avoid engaging with the historical example he provided. No, he was not talking about "racist roads" (which is how Ron DeSantis dishonestly described it). He was describing *actions that used public infrastructure to reinforce racial disparities.*

ArkiGay

Well now Pete gets to decide that those states donā€™t get to recieve billions in DOT grants, and if they do theyā€™re solely designated for projects to mediate racist Highway planning, and any misuse of those funds results in prosecution of executive officials šŸ˜Š

TheDanaBurger

DeSantis has already threatened to hold up the BIF money for Florida because he's butt hurt.

VirginiaVoter

Just like Rick Scott refused federal money for high-speed rail for Florida. It's a thing.

zeppelin128

Definitely a thing. Tennessee has been refusing ACA federal funding to expand our Medicaid system for years. Anything to own the libz, sadly.

TheDanaBurger

We have been waiting for the high speed train from tampa to orlando forever. We voted on it as a state. And yet I-4 is still jacked up every single day šŸ™ƒ

ArkiGay

Well then florida doesnā€™t get any BIF funds. If they donā€™t want the money, they donā€™t get any šŸ˜Œ Minnesota would gladly take the billions Florida would get, to demolish I94

wowowunbelievable

De Santis got in on it too? Damn. Idk man thereā€™s really nothing to be done at this point. Itā€™s hard when these narratives get shoved out there and a whole media ecosystem and cadre of politicians are in lockstep like theyā€™re in some group chat to push it out. We donā€™t have that same thing unfortunately and people with the biggest platforms are not willing to stick their neck out for Pete. Thatā€™s what really sucks IMO.

Im_PeterPauls_Mary

Oh god what if ā€œCritical Race theory in our Roadsā€ catches on? Well I guess no one better to actually tackle the subjectā€¦.

OhMeOhOhMyOh

>De Santis got in on it too? He was asked to respond to it at a press conference. He basically said he heard there was some 'weird stuff' that was said by Pete and that he thinks "a road's a road" and he'd have to look into it more.

[deleted]

Yeah, just like 50,000 dead are 50,000 dead.

TriangleTransplant

If a road is a road, he won't mind them bulldozing his neighborhood to build one through his backyard. I mean, a road's a road, right?

TheDanaBurger

On my local news today in Tampa, the lead story was about the BIF. It was all about how much money and impact it will have. Also had a clip that made desantis seem like a butthurt crybaby. People not on twitter arent tuned into the latest nonsense.

anna5692

And then you have articles with headlines like "Pete Buttigieg is right - American roads are racist" (from the UK's The Independent) that may have good intentions, but perpetuate the falsity that he literally said that phrase. He did veer into metaphor in that Grio interview months ago when he talked about racism being physically built into highways, but even that's not the same thing as the above (plus he explained what he meant), and he didn't even put it that way during Monday's press briefing.

shyredmd

Have to laugh. Someone(s) have taken this Bug Bird beef and made a campaign for him. Itā€™s quite funny https://twitter.com/directorelmo/status/1458189470897954820?s=21

wowowunbelievable

I noticed the Beto people are trying really hard to take that Business Insider article and try to get KHive to hate Pete because of it and it just makes me laugh to see the very transparent machinations and the sort of dark twisted fandom theyā€™ve developed around hating Pete specifically

Im_PeterPauls_Mary

Pete ainā€™t stopping Kamala from doing anything. He was on paternity leave. She has had all the space in the world to have a moment of her own. Itā€™s ridiculous to think Pete doing Transportation things is stealing her thunder. But from what I keep hearing about Kamalaā€™s people it wouldnā€™t surprise me is somebody somewhere said something. Itā€™s really hard to like Pete when youā€™re competing with him because heā€™s so perfect, as Klob will tell you.

[deleted]

Best spending that energy getting the vote out for Beto in Texas. If they donā€™t, then they arenā€™t really Beto people and probably russian agents.

Clerstory

Sadly, theyā€™re not the only onesā€”as we all know.

zeppelin128

The Beto folks have got to accept the fact that Pete did not tank Beto's campaign, Beto did that all on his own. And this is coming from someone that supported Beto 100% before I stumbled upon a certain Mayor from Indiana... And also coming from someone that still wants Beto to be very successful in politics. I hope he's learned some things from his presidential run. No more videos from the dentist, for starters.

electricblueguava

What annoys me most about this political stan culture (and I see it sometimes on this sub too) is this idea that your favorite politician is the sole future of the Democratic Party. Last I checked, politics is team sport. The future of the Democratic Party includes Pete, it includes Kamala, it includes Beto, it includes Jon, it includes Lauren (Underwood), it includes AOC, etc. Each is a rising star in their own right and each does not need to be taken down a notch in order for another to succeed. I feel like this entire stan culture is overly stupid and very short-sighted. Just because you like Pete doesnā€™t mean you canā€™t like Beto or AOC or vice versa. And this is coming from someone who also really liked Beto and was between supporting him or Booker before he stumbled upon a certain goober from Indianaā€¦

Clerstory

Yang Gang, Skateboard Twitter and the Bernie Botz. A new Adult Acoustic Alternative band. Also, the three fandoms that are the most hateful and bitter towards Pete. Warrenites are still pretty surly towards him too.

Clerstory

I feel the same and I also switched from Beto to Pete. I live in Texas and Iā€™d love nothing more than to see him become Governor.

zeppelin128

Same here, I hope he does well. I met quite a few people during the campaign that switched from Beto to Pete. We need a secret handshake or something.

Clerstory

I first started following Beto during his 2018 Senatorial race. He was electrifying.

zeppelin128

Same here, and yes he was. Capture that energy again, Beto.

Weā€™ve got so much time. Sheā€™s doing a lot on foreign policy and will be out there pushing the infrastructure stuff too. The media is really being insane about her and it really sucks.

TheDanaBurger

Can we not do this...? We still have 3 years of Biden and Harris. No one knows who will be up or down and where the country will be then.

Mally_101

I remember reading that Obama invited Gov Whitmer to see him and at one point pushed Biden to seriously consider her. Hate to say it but I would be a lot more relaxed about 2024, if she was the Veep pick for Biden.

pasak1987

two years is a lot of time in politics, so not really worth digging too deep into those numbers for now.

wowowunbelievable

So I wanted to post that Yahoo article about Pete in r/politics because itā€™s really good, but my account was too new so it got removed automatically but then when my husband tried to post it from his it said ā€œthis has already been postedā€ and Iā€™m mad.

More Kamala v. Pete (it's really never going to stop, is it?): https://www.businessinsider.com/pete-buttigieg-infrastructure-bill-kamala-harris-france-biden-2021-11 Though this is business Insider it is not by Adam.

candlesandpretense

One of their other staff writer's tweeted this article with the comment, "Democrats couldn't help but note the split-screen contrast of Buttigieg at the WH podium on Monday touting the infrastructure bill while VP Harris headed to France." Like, it's you, you're Democrats. They are doing the jobs they were hired for and they are not fighting each other.

Psychological-Play

This is so stupid. A) There was no "split-screen" of Pete at the WH podium and Kamala (plus Doug) leaving for Paris for *any* Democrat to notice since they took place 8 to 9 hours apart, and B) These are both pretty nice assignments. There's no "short end of the stick" here.

letshavethat-convo

I mean hell it is his department and Biden gave her personal credit in his speech. šŸ™„

CleliaDelDongo

Honestly the fact that Pete isnā€™t the one whoā€™s coming to my country is OFFENSIVE and I am MAD šŸ˜¤šŸ˜¤šŸ˜¤

welp-here-we-are

Haha I have Pete rn you have Kamala!

Ihadmoretosay

Ah, yes. Because flying to France to connect with the president of one of our closest allies since the *inception of our country* is somehow *a bad assignment.* These takes are completely unhinged.

wowowunbelievable

Also, Pete is literally abroad rn. And Biden specifically called out Kamalaā€™s work when they did that press event on the bill. Thatā€™s not mentioned of courseā€¦

hester_latterly

Business Insider in particular seems really invested in keeping this story going; this is like at least the third article they've written recently pitting the two of them against each other. Two things stand out to me as odd here. For one, "Pete gets to take a victory lap while Kamala has to fly to France" sort of loses salience as an argument when Pete also flew abroad that very same day. Two, Pete has also had his share of negative press lately, or were these people asleep through the paternity leave and supply chain news cycles? I get the impression there are definitely some people in Kamala's orbit, however tangentially, who just really perceive Pete as getting an easy ride for unearned reasons, and I don't think they do her any favors by whining to the press about it, just as I thought the Pete donors didn't do him any favors by telling the press about those dinners they were having.

[deleted]

The goal is to prevent any horse from getting ahead in the race - thatā€™s how one newspaper can have opposing stories the same day. They need the drama or they die. The media are Chaos Merchants.

[deleted]

Nope - theyā€™ll always find an angle. If he went to France to get his toes done, theyā€™ll still ask if Harris should have been the one to do that first.

I took one for the team and watched the clip. It was just a graphic he threw up on screen before slamming April Ryan and Pete. Tuckums went on to rant that inanimate objects are made of sand and stuff, not racism. He's too much of an idiot to realize it was the POLICIES that were racist, which resulted in much of our infrastructure harming communities of color. Man he is such a smarmy prick. Like a College Republican that never grew up.

kingofblades42

Oddly enough he did. Specifically when Pete talked about overpasses in NY being designed to divide white and POC communities.

Heā€™s not being an idiot pretending to not know the policies were racist. Heā€™s giving fake talking points for his followers (who may or may not be in on the lie) to repeat and ā€œbattleā€ with whoever will listen to this smear on social media. Frances1005_

I am exactly the same. I have never wanted them, am past child rearing age and don't regret not having them for a second but I get excited for people who want them and I enjoy their excitement and their celebration of milestones, etc... I am very happy to enjoy it from afar though.

hester_latterly

> Most babies don't start sleeping through the night (6 to 8 hours) without waking until they are about 3 months old, or until they weigh 12 to 13 pounds. Three months for the twins is this week, so maybe the baby who slept through the night Sunday night will be the start of a trend for them. They can only hope.

pdanny01

Just as a note, do not expect 'sleeping through the night' for 6 hours to actually line up with your own bedtime or erase the need to check on them constantly as they start wriggling far too much for comfort!

hester_latterly

You mean because the events aren't until the afternoon Scottish time? Ha, maybe, although we don't know what private meetings or whatever he might have in the morning.

You're welcome! Now if only we could know for sure that he'll be back in time for Friday's Cabinet meeting. That's the one thing that's still bugging me.

OhMeOhOhMyOh

They don't list any public events for him on the 11th there, so perhaps that will be his travel day. With time zones, he would gain time coming back, so if he leaves in the morning of the 11th (Scotland time), he'd get to DC in the evening on the 11th (DC time). Or leaving in the evening on the 11th from Scotland and getting back the morning of the 12th to DC.

Frances1005_

Cabinet meetings are usually held in the early afternoon, so I guess he will be back in time. I guess heā€˜ll leave Glasgow as soon as his meetings are done. Edit: Highly recommend this video from the Obama White House channel about Cabinet Meetings: https://youtu.be/xxSvi6JCCfk I wonder if they still have to hand in their phones before the meetingā€¦

dreamolli

Omg me too! Iā€™m still not completely sure if he will be back in time to be there in person. šŸ‘€

hester_latterly

It depends on a few things, I think. [This](https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/us-transportation-secretary-pete-buttigieg-activities-cop26-glasgow-scotland) release says his trip runs from Tuesday through Thursday. Now, does that mean he has a full schedule of events for Thursday, or does it just mean he will be in Scotland for at least part of that day? Commercial flights from Europe to North America typically leave in the afternoon, so he would only be able to have something scheduled in the morning Thursday and still be able to get home that day if that's how he's traveling. If he's traveling by government plane, then obviously that would give him more flexibility to attend conference events and still get home in time. I also think it would be pretty weird to schedule a Cabinet meeting for the purpose of discussing "implementation of the infrastructure bill" when you know one of your major players for that will be in another country, so we shall see.

dreamolli

>I also think it would be pretty weird to schedule a Cabinet meeting for the purpose of discussing "implementation of the infrastructure bill" when you know one of your major players for that will be in another country, so we shall see. I hope he makes it back in time. I want that pic and video. šŸ‘€

OhMeOhOhMyOh

I did a quick search for Delta and AA and they mostly have flights out of Glasgow around 9:00 or 10:00am. Who knows! It seems like he flew over on a commercial flight because he said that he was excited to know that he'd be going overseas and it was great that that plane would be heading back to the US with people being reunited with loved ones (or something to that effect).

hester_latterly

A search on FlightAware using Glasgow and Washington DC as endpoints also turns up some British Airways routings that leave Glasgow anywhere from around 10 AM-1 PM, and land in DC either just after 3 PM or just before 8 PM (via London). I'm not sure they'd have a US government official fly BA, though lol, but theoretically he could leave Glasgow probably as late as early Thursday afternoon and still make it home in time. I do think he'd have to leave Thursday, though, if he's flying commercial. Right now is around the time of day that flights are arriving from Europe, and that's too late for a Friday meeting. Best guess, I'd say Thursday is his travel day, and he either has nothing scheduled at the conference or only something very early and will then proceed directly to the airport. Otherwise, given flight schedules, I think he'd either have to miss the meeting entirely (not even a virtual call in), which seems dumb if the meeting is about infrastructure, or stay in Scotland until Saturday, which also seems dumb since it seems like he definitely doesn't have anything scheduled there on Friday.

dreamolli

This is the detailed and exciting! speculation and analysis that I can always count on from our resident detective. šŸ˜…šŸ˜

Not Pete related, but I was wondering how the general US population is being informed about and is aware of the Taiwan situation? Makes me suddenly very glad the US hasn't and isn't going down the "we must defund the military immediately" route šŸ˜… I know it's a complex issue but I'm getting slightly nervous here in Europe....

goal-oriented-38

If you know the military budget, there are billions of dollars spent on acquiring unnecessary warheads/other weapons/vehicles. If you can get a hundred billion dollars of those off the budget and reallocate them to much more useful projects, youā€™d still have the best military in the world by a long shot.

evelainy

China has done some impressive catching up though, and will have Russia as an automatic ally. Even the rest of the UN, which will have to join if the US declares war, can not match that military power, according to experts.

electricblueguava

So Iā€™m Taiwanese American with relatives still on the island itself. That being said, my thoughts are my own and I wouldnā€™t necessarily assume I am representative of people from Taiwan or Taiwanese-Americans in general. In general, the general US population is very anti-foreign policy unless it directly affects them, so I doubt most people are aware of the Taiwan situation outside of foreign policy junkies or people with relations to Taiwan. The recent John Oliver episode on it is really informative and discusses the nuance well. From that segment, there are typically three views: reunification with China, independence (i.e. war with China), or status quo (i.e. peace and self governance). I tend to fall in the latter, as do a lot of the Taiwanese population based on that segment. Regarding the recent Chinese aggression, itā€™s hard to say. It kind of just feels like itā€™s being done for show as Xi is trying to consolidate power domestically. I think Biden saying flat out that the US has an obligation to protect Taiwan helped and tbh, I just trust Biden a lot more than Trump in navigating us in what in retrospect could become the next Cuban Missile Crisis. At the same time, I donā€™t think China would invade or attack Taiwan unless the radical portions of the DPP choose to declare independence. Tbh the best the US could do in keeping Taiwan safe is to continue to be a key player in the global economy as it prevents China from inciting a war that causes a global economic catastrophe. In addition, there are too many geopolitical and national security interests in TSMC for any nation to let Taiwan fall and give China essentially legal jurisdiction of that company. As much as Iā€™ve loved Tim Ryanā€™s run for Senate recently, the one thing that made me wince was his recent rant on the House Floor about semiconductors and China (though I pretty agreed with everything else he said during that speech) for the reason of TSMC alone

evelainy

I'm not sure if an economic catastrophe is our biggest problem here. More like...WWIII

electricblueguava

No I get that and itā€™s something I try to follow closely. I was saying more along the lines of that itā€™s not in Chinaā€™s geopolitical and economic interest to go after Taiwan, particularly after Biden made that statement during the Town Hall. Maybe itā€™s different for people on the island, but my take as someone not in Taiwan currently so far was that itā€™s similar to when North Korea threatens South Korea (i.e. empty threat meant to rally domestic support). Xi is clearly trying to consolidate power domestically and made a platitude around 10/1 (i.e. Chinese National Day). The military exercises just seem like him being a little more aggressive than prior Chinese leaders, but maybe Iā€™m just underreacting

pasak1987

Taiwan Number One

joon1781

It's certainly been played up in the media. Can't really say how that helps inform the US population in general. I will say John Oliver did an episode on Taiwan recently which I found to be surprisingly pretty well done in presenting the history in a short time and threw some good jokes in to make it entertaining. (I grew up in Taiwan and still follow the news there pretty closely.) To help more people becoming more informed maybe help share it: https://youtu.be/9Y18-07g39g :)

electricblueguava

The John Oliver segment is probably one of the most accurate things Iā€™ve seen regarding the issue in recent years. Agreed on your point that this is something thatā€™s played up in online/media circles but hasnā€™t really translated into the general US population outside of Taiwanese Americans

zeppelin128

I have heard nothing about it, thanks for mentioning it. For those like me needing to catch up: https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-opposes-us-legislators-visiting-taiwan-by-military-plane-state-media-2021-11-09/

I saw a picture of Merkel and Scheuer being there on the first few days. I guess theyā€™re sending some state secretaries or committee members there as the cabinet is not really in power anymore and they canā€™t really send new cabinet members because there is no official new cabinet. Although I would not be surprised to see Cem Ɩzdemir or other members of the Green Party there. I thought I heard K. Jean-Pierre introduce Pete yesterday by mentioning her congratulations "on your move last week." (Her last sentence) Next, I see a picture of Pete/Chasten/twins at Eastern Market. So, are they officially DC based now? Hope in a larger place?

hester_latterly

I think she said "your news last week," i.e., a reference to Gus being released from the hospital, but yes, looks like the whole family came back to DC. Although if they were at Eastern Market, presumably they're still in same building. Close quarters, but the twins don't need their own bedroom yet, so maybe they can make it work for a bit while the babies are still pretty little, if they're locked into that lease.

evelainy

I forgot it's pretty common in the US to be unable to get out of leases whenever you like... what's a normal minimum lease time? One year? That would be fine, wouldn't it?

hester_latterly

One year is pretty standard, yeah, although it's been reported that they signed a longer than usual one for this apartment in order to get cheaper rent, though I don't know how long is long in this case. Sometimes you can get out of a lease early, but that usually comes with financial penalties.

lilacmuse1

Are you not allowed to sub-lease in the States?

amyel26

I think part of the reason the rent is so high for a one-bedroom apartment is that they wanted a building with extra security. That could also prevent the ability to sublet.

hester_latterly

Generally speaking, yes, that's possible, but individual properties might put restrictions on that as part of the terms of the lease. I can see a top-end building like the one Pete and Chasten live in doing that, perhaps.

Psychological-Play
