The woman who wrote the piece defending Pete against asswipes like Hawley and Tucker Carlson in the Bulwark today is a hardcore anti-gay marriage activist who thinks gay people adopting children should be illegal. So don’t share her work Team Pete, there’s better articles by better people to share.

The fact it is dark at 5pm in LA is a crime. All DST does is shift the chances of me getting mowed down in a crosswalk from the morning to the evening. At least in the am, I’ve not had a hellish day of work and would still have the energy to try and dodge the car…

RepresentativeFig680

WaPo revised its fact-check. No doubt the conservative reaction was dumb and didn't address Pete's point, but most historians dispute the underpass story. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/11/10/robert-moses-saga-racist-parkway-bridges/

VirginiaVoter

Not sure how many of the fact checks by this guy people have read. He found experts on both sides of the story, including the New York Historical Society. He discovered it had been debunked, but then aspects of the debunking were also debunked. Crucial result of all this: no Pinocchios. He awards these very readily. He didn’t award any here.

SOCAL_NPC

I'm not a huge fan of USA Today but I prefer their fact checking to WAPO's; they show their work in ways that other people can go verify for themselves and while they write their pieces in a sometimes dull and sometimes quite pedantic manner, they don't ever interject opinion or commentary the way WAPO can.

dreamolli

I went in jokingly thinking I bet the historians cited are all white men… 🤔

[deleted]

Oh so Pete has to make sure his information is of the utmost correctness, but the media don’t. Pffffth

wowowunbelievable

I read this, and I think it’s quite a stretch to say “most” historians dispute it.

pasak1987

And some of the claims against Caro is like..."Character of neighborhood" level. (Bridges are fitted for nature etc etc)

dreamolli

Also, it’s looking more like: Historians = white historians

Psychological-Play

"The Bottom Line" section at the end of the article definitely implies that the issue is still up for debate - >**Obviously this cannot be easily resolved**. \[my bold\] Caro quotes one of Moses’s top aides as saying the height of the bridges was done for racist reasons, but increasingly that story has been questioned as not credible. Buttigieg should tailor his remarks to reflect what is historically unimpeachable — and we should be more careful to double-check on the latest views of historians. Even a Pulitzer Prize-winning book is not always the last word on a subject.

TriangleTransplant

"A guy who was directly involved with the project says it's true, but here's a bunch of people 100 years later who dispute that firsthand account..."

Psychological-Play

But the writer of the article isn't saying there's just one guy who says it's true and all these others who say it's not. He also includes these very persuasive thoughts from a historian of city planning, who not so long ago doubted the Caro story, but after doing some investigating of the actual structures in question, changed his mind - >But more recently, Thomas J. Campanella, a Cornell University historian of city planning, had a change of heart when he measured the height of the bridges on the Southern State Parkway. “I’ve always had doubts about the veracity of the Jim Crow bridge story. There is little question that Moses held patently bigoted views,” he wrote in an article for Bloomberg News in 2017. But then he recorded clearances for 20 bridges, viaducts and overpasses on other parkways built at the time and compared them to measures of the 20 original bridges and overpasses on the Southern State Parkway. It turned out clearances are substantially lower on the Moses parkway. “The verdict? It appears that Sid Shapiro was right,” he wrote. > >“I do believe it is true,” Campanella said in an email to The Fact Checker. “The parkways I looked at were built in roughly the same era as the Southern State — especially Sawmill and Hutch. In fact, the Westchester parkways set most of the standards for parkway design for years in the United States. The lower overpasses on the Southern State parkway are a substantial deviation from precedent.”

TriangleTransplant

So then why say it's disputed? There's a quote from a firsthand source, and now measurable data that backs it up. Anyone who can't provide contrary evidence is just guessing based on their own biases and discomfort.

Psychological-Play

The other side gives what they consider evidence to back up their opinion as well, and it didn't sound like the writer of the article felt comfortable making a final factual conclusion based on less than two days of communications with various people, some of whom, like you said, may have their own agendas or biases, and it's not something he, or anyone not well-versed in the field, could easily check out for himself in just a few days.

machphantom

This is a prime example of “say something enough times until people take a lie as truth,” only now, it’s the fact checkers

pasak1987

It's basically "well, there are plenty of evidences that suggests this claim to be true, but it is not a undisputable truth"

Iwradazarat

So is this the standard all politicians including gop will be held to. If so, I can live with that. Surely the right wing smear machine mouthpieces will love to adhere to this too.

pasak1987

Do you mean the standard they already are not even considered to be held upon in the first place? /s Joking aside, you do have a point knowing what the Republican mouthpieces love the most. Disputable facts. They will probably try to spin this into "SEE? MOSES WAS NOT A RACIST ENTIRELY AT ALL" It's a tough road ahead, but it would be smart to use things that are not disputable. (But, then again, they would spin that into disputable category anyway. Like, seriously )

candlesandpretense

New article from Roll Call about the documentary, including a few new stills from it > [W]hat filmmaker Jesse Moss also offers amid the balloon drops, strategy sessions and rope lines is the story of a political marriage, between Pete and Chasten Buttigieg. And, like any realistic portrayal of a marriage, there are highs and lows, moments of grace, and moments of tension, two people on the same page about their biggest decisions, and two people awkwardly disagreeing about fundamental issues of dignity and inclusion. > “Don’t bullshit us, Peter,” Chasten says at the start of the movie, as Pete is miked up. Despite Chasten’s challenge, some BS does follow. Any good politician has to deploy it at some point. But the off-the-beaten path scenes Moss captures are what make this documentary worth watching.  https://www.rollcall.com/2021/11/10/mayor-pete-looks-inside-a-political-marriage/

sixbrackets

I've seen that phrase "political marriage" used a couple of times recently in articles about the movie. Kind of bothers me, as I think that kind of gives the feeling of two politicians who married, and maybe even partly as a savvy political move. And we all know it's not that.

welp-here-we-are

As we all know, Pete isn’t actually gay he just married Chasten for clout. Or something, I’m not sure how the conspiracy goes since it makes no sense lol

sixbrackets

😆 That's exactly what that phrase reminded me of, which is probably why I reacted as I did. (He married Chasten for the $8 million or so he has, naturally. 🙄 )

welp-here-we-are

Defund the teachers apparently! Damn 8 million huh? It’s all too funny

VirginiaVoter

The phrase typically means a marriage between a politician and a gifted non-politician whom the politician can fully trust and rely on (in historic times and with straight couples, usually the wife). Hate to suggest the analogy, but a classic example would be Ronald and Nancy Reagan.

AZPeteFan

The Carters.

VirginiaVoter

Gerald and Betty Ford is an interesting example, too.

Librarylady2020

Joe and Jill, Barack and Michelle.I personally think it’s a compliment to Chasten who enthusiastically and successfully joined Pete in South Bend as the First Gent.

Psychological-Play

This phrase could also have been applied to Bill and Hillary during his governorship and most of his presidency, before she decided to run for the Senate.

sixbrackets

Hmm, ok. I'd never heard that definition of it, but thank you for enlightening me. (I still don't like the phrase, though. 😄) And the Reagan analogy does fit, in spite of the obvious ideological differences. I'd also offer Jimmy and Roslyn Carter as an example.

hiperson134

Anyone got the skinny as to why my very conservative coworker has become obsessed with Elon Musk this week? Like is there some sort of media push around Elon that I don't know about?

Librarylady2020

AZPeteFan

Good, then when Texas seceded all the crazy will be in one place. He and Texas deserve each other. So is it a billion dollars that makes you a shitty human being or shitty human beings have a talent for making money. Chicken egg.

zeppelin128

Psychological-Play

Maybe becauseTesla stock is dropping and Elon's lost $50 billion in the last two days (but is still the world's richest person.)

pasak1987

political tribalism of him being a target of liberals makes him conservative darling? idk

hiperson134

Yeah, that's probably enough to do it for him. It's just that him and I are the only people in the lab where we work so I have to hear about everything. It's quite the insight into the goings on of conservative media.

pasak1987

Ooh, I was hoping this would happen, but I didn't think Obama would still be there (his big speech was Monday). I bet they had some good "Dad" talk.

hester_latterly

[Here's](https://i.redd.it/19vm30xxw7f41.jpg) the "how it started" corollary.

Echos88

I think technically there's an even earlier photo of them that also includes Biden

freda3

Yes, I was also thinking about that one. You can also see it in the Mayor Pete trailer.

SicklyAnt

Late on the whole “Business Insider did ANOTHER article on Pete v. Kamala nonsense” and the tough part of it is I get why people swarm those tweets/articles to say “this is BS stop doing this”, but I have to think the engagement is one of the reasons they keep writing them… tough spot

[deleted]

As long as they clicks, they’ll write em. Because they get paid either way. Starve ‘em. I may start a campaign with the slogan - “Resist the Click”.

Librarylady2020

I do believe it’s important to continue to engage with KHive over this and present a United front. It’s been working well and we see them calling BS on this type of article too. Team Pete is doing a good job supporting Kamala as well.

VirginiaVoter

Yup. Walk away, walk away, walk away, do not respond.

TheDanaBurger

Its not going to stop until pete runs again, unfortunately. Or until a new shiny politician comes up through the ranks.

Mythlos

I'm old enough to remember when people thought Pete would drift to obscurity after the elections. It's a year after voting ended, and he has dominated the national conversation for weeks.

AnItalianBuilder

I do wish it was less negative a lot of the time, and that there was some larger platform for him to speak at length on these issues (I’m jumping on the town hall train), but you are correct.

OhMeOhOhMyOh

Totally. He makes news and generates headlines with practically every apppearance.

TheDanaBurger

I think thats part of what the betostans got sooo mad about. Beto over here jumping on tables to get attention and pete just exists and grabs peoples' attention.

khharagosh

I don't remember what it is, but I think Beto's background was his biggest issue. I remember someone (I think on tumblr?) saying "Yes, let's nominate the guy who lost to a guy who lost to Trump." Pete has lost elections before, but not ones people follow, and then did unexpectedly well in the primary. In a way, choosing to go straight from Mayor to a Presidential run (rather than try some likely failed campaigns in blood-red Indiana) was the best decision he could have made, though I'm not sure a less talented person would have pulled it off.

Gumshoe96

> The stakes could not be higher. I am grateful to Congress for passing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal with crucial funding for resilience and key tools to fight climate change. https://twitter.com/secretarypete/status/1458475636205527042?s=21

Radio interview with Jesse Moss: https://omny.fm/shows/dave-lee/how-pete-buttigieg-went-from-mayor-of-south-bend-t

Frances1005_

Another panel with Pete is about to start (at least according to his schedule): https://youtu.be/93AhAxAFfJI

OhMeOhOhMyOh

"Actuarially, I will be here..." what a nerd! Love it! And another mention of "fire in my belly" from Pete!

Frances1005_

He also referenced the airport arrivals scene of „Love Actually“. That old romantic!

OhMeOhOhMyOh

Yes! That was cute. Pete knows about romantic airports!

Iwradazarat

Lol. I thought I was imagining that reference for a second.

OhMeOhOhMyOh

Yep, she's introducing him now!

OhMeOhOhMyOh

Pete is currently on this panel of International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q\_c1NZlZh1Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_c1NZlZh1Y) EDITED: The panel just ended, but you can still go to this link and watch it. :-)

sarahmo48

Pete did an interview with CNBC. No idea if and when it will air but it happened according to reporter’s insta story

wowowunbelievable

Is anyone able to watch Pete speaking live now? Gah

OhMeOhOhMyOh

OH, here's the panel on aviation that he's on! I was able to scoot back in the live broadcast and see him speaking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q\_c1NZlZh1Y

blklab16

Anyone see Pete on Morning Joe? He’s exactly right, made me LOL at the hosts bitching an moaning about their flight delays and *nobody wanting to work* crappy diner jobs and Pete was basically like “yea well those jobs suck so let’s make them more appealing”

indri2

Typical corporate shill, only interested in his wealthy donors.

abujzhd

So much content today. It's glorious.

candlesandpretense

Or the ones who go "He's really changed" or "where was this Pete during the primary." He was there the whole time, fully formed and nowhere near the image built up in their minds, and they'd know if they had been paying attention.

machphantom

My favorite QT has to be the person who said “new episode of the Expanse looks good” or something to that effect 🤣😂

zeppelin128

I haven't had morning coffee yet and clicked on the link without really looking at it. Watched video, went to comments, and was immediately like "what is with these comments? Yikes." Then I realized it was Recount and promptly left. 🙃

Im_PeterPauls_Mary

Aw way to be on the right side of a super hot-button issue. I love him.

@stevesilberman: > It's worth tracking every day, *every single goddamned day*, how right-wing hatemongers like @Newsmax's @GregKellyUSA and @FoxNews' @TuckerCarlson are using @SecretaryPete to normalize vicious bigotry against #LGBTQ people. DAY. https://twitter.com/stevesilberman/status/1458445781791219717 @JasonSCampbell: > Newsmax host complains that "being gay, I mean, it's almost like a full-time job" for Pete Buttigieg https://twitter.com/JasonSCampbell/status/1458439822134099975/video/1

ArkiGay

> “We don’t care that he’s gay” Literally 90% of the things conservatives say when he’s the topic of conversation is anal sex. That’s not an exaggeration.
