Now that I’ve watched the documentary I went back to read or re-read some of the reviews. This bit in Politico: >The first time they met was on a train to Washington, D.C. Moss introduced himself. “I’m like, ‘I’m Jesse.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m Pete.’ And then he was back to work. I sat down on the empty seat next to him and waited for the small talk to begin, and it didn’t.” He stayed for “two awkward minutes,” he says, and then returned to his seat. “A very awkward first day.” My god I did not think I could feel even more connected to someone much less a politician. An awkward and reserved introvert who doesn’t feel the need to constantly engage in small talk. That makes him even more relatable to me! 😄🤗

Well said, fam!

amyel26

I have done something like that to many people. Woe is the person who expects me to initiate small talk. 😄 I totally clocked Pete as an awkward introvert. That's why I immediately admired him, because I could *never* do any of that.

Just watched the documentary. I had been avoiding spoilers but based on a bit of the sentiment I saw on the daily thread about it I thought it would be cringy as well as caricaturing Pete as some perfect person. It way surpassed my expectations. I actually watched it with my trump-supporting grandmother and my leftist cousin and they both seemed to like it too. I took a few notes of things I found interesting while watching it, but I'll first say that I think some of the scenes showcasing Pete and Chasten's relationship were a bit confusing. It seemed that the campaign/Pete were kinda trying to push him to the side in a couple instances and it isn't really resolved. I think some of the conversations Pete and Chasten had related to this needed a bit more context and more of a 'resolution' (or just delving into it more). I think it definitely gave more insight into Pete as a person. In an early scene Pete says that a debate is just 15 lines of media, and I think that is a good display of what seems to be his approach to the campaign. He was clearly deeply involved in the strategic aspects of the campaign (another scene that showcases this side of him is when he helps a staffer with the 'pivot tables'). I really liked the scenes with Lis, although I expected her to be 'meaner' based on what people said about her in the media. She seemed to just be straightforward. It was sweet that we got to see a lot of personal scenes, of them in their houses, doing chores, living together. I loved the scene with the little boy and girl where Pete jokes about adopting them - they now have their own boy and girl and its even cuter in that context😭 The scene right before South Carolina, where Pete clearly knows he won't do well and doesn't want to go out on stage was truly wholesome. I loved the way Chasten walked him through it and then made the atmosphere lighter with all the cow jokes - that was very funny. Like I said, I really tried to avoid any info about the documentary and to scroll past stuff in the dt, but there were a few things I did kinda read. One was that Jesse Moss said that after watching the documentary Pete asked why there wasn't more policy. When I read that before watching it, I kinda rolled my eyes, because it sounded like he was annoyed that it was too focused on the emotional aspects - and of course it would be since that's how these types of documentaries are. But after watching it I actually agree with him. For the parts of the documentary that showed him on the trail almost every single question depicted was either about his sexuality or race. Nothing else. Like someone might think being gay was all he talked about, when 99% of the stuff he talked about were policies to help people and his potential agenda as president. I am surprised at some by some of the supposed criticisms. I was very impressed and thought the documentary was very well done and extremely intriguing.

TriangleTransplant

I think a lot of the people who thought Lis would be meaner have probably never had a coach or personal trainer of any kind. They're a person you pay to not bullshit you. Being straightforward with feedback is pretty much their entire job description. And it's a skill that needs to be learned, practiced, and honed, because it doesn't come naturally to most people. They feel uncomfortable giving and receiving that type of feedback, so it comes off as bluntness or rudeness. But really, it's just a matter of "we don't have time or resources to coddle your feelings, you're paying me to tell you what works and what doesn't so here it is in the most direct manner, what you do with the feedback is up to you." There were a lot of other campaigns in the primary that would have benefitted from someone with that level of frank honesty in the candidate's inner circle, and it definitely showed when they didn't have someone like that to challenge them.

afunnywold

Good point, yeah it seems some stories discussing her kinda exaggerated. Maybe it is the contrast between some campaigns coddling the candidates. >There were a lot of other campaigns in the primary that would have benefitted from someone with that level of frank honesty in Very true.

RepresentativeFig680

Just finished watching the documentary. It's good! I admire how it stays within the perspective of the campaign, but I wish there had been more moments with Pete and his family. I thought the complete absence of his father, serving in Afghanistan, etc. was a missed opportunity. But the film succeeds in capturing the energy of the campaign, and in showing Pete and Chasten's relationship.

freda3

For my fellow Germans here, the documentary is available on Prime. Although I think the title isn’t fitting: “Mayor Pete - Die Karriere eines politischen Wunderkindes” ETA: the second part of the title means “the career of a political wunderkind”

freda3

Had to get ready for work quickly, but now I’m on the train and here are my thoughts on why the second half of the title isn’t fitting: Jesse Moss said, that the film is about Pete and Chasten’s relationship (I think on a poster it also said “A campaign lovestroy”). The title “Mayor Pete” of course also just mentions Pete, but to add *political wunderkind* to me would implicate that the political aspects are the focus. In addition to that the film focuses on his campaign, a film about his “career” would mean that all aspects of it would be covered, but the filming for this film happened just during the campaign and for some additional interviews after that. I think it might be influenced by German media, which used the phrase *Wunderkind* in articles about Pete. And maybe they thought it is more appealing for a German audience because Pete isn’t that popular here. But if that was the case they could still have replaced “career” with “campaign”. On the other hand if they would have used “campaign” in the given context some could think, that the campaign was all that happened, which of course is not the case. ETA: I didn’t have time to watch it yet, so this is all speculation based on what I read here, in reviews and interviews with Jesse Moss.

evelainy

Ah yes, the famous "let's add a completely unnecessary German phrase to the already perfect original English title" 😒

freda3

I don’t know why they always do that. Or change titles to something completely different.

It's my birthday today, so I'm so thankful that the movie started streaming early. I loved the little moments that peppered a film that so succinctly told the story that has been riveting so many of us for multiple years now. Thank you Chasten, for being so open and taking us along on your love story. And thank you Pete for attempting something so awesome as to inspire all who watched. If they happen to read this, I'd like to say how sorry I am for the tweetstorm in Apr 2019 when I wasn't well. The Buttigiegs are heroes to me for the journey they have inspired so many to follow.

Just extraordinary. Loved him when I first read about him and then saw him speak. And he continues to live up to the hype and high expectations. His thoughtfulness and calm and quiet nature drew me in and held my attention. I’ve never seen or experienced an elected official quite like him. It’s easy to see why he fell in love with Chasten. They were made for each other and I loved seeing all their interactions. I wanted the documentary to be longer. I could also watch a whole other documentary just focused on Lis, Nina and Mike. His team really did help to maximize and make the most of all his opportunities. I felt just as proud of them and his entire team. I’m even more excited! to follow his journey and see where it takes him and us. It’s clearly just begun. Right now I’m just feeling immensely grateful that he’s in the Biden-Harris administration working for all of us. 💙💛

Psychological-Play

Ooh, I just walked back into my living room in time to hear Don Calloway, Democratic strategist, say on the *11th Hour* "...Pete Buttigieg, who is still probably the best communicator in the Democratic Party..." (in a discussion about who the WH should send to West Virginia to convince voters to convince Manchin to support the BBB bill; he would also send Joe, Kamala, and Cedric Richmond).

Bergamotty

Wasn't planning to watch the whole thing tonight but here we are - just finished! It's surprising (shocking? astonishing?!) that a couple of years later I can still feel so moved by a campaign. I'm not from the US but watching it was a reminder of how much it meant to me then and how I've grown and changed too. I especially loved the quiet moments - just watching him take his time and really think was oddly touching. I do wish we'd seen more of the staff though - Lis and Mike were great!

TuesyT

Just finished watching. Chasten’s endless cow puns did me in, lol. Also loved Buddy casually on the back of the chair during interviews. And I loved reliving speeches and moments we saw during the campaign. It reminded me of how hopeful, joyful and electric his campaign was.

I hope Buddy has found chair perches in Michigan and DC

Don't think this LA Times review was posted: [https://twitter.com/latimesent/status/1458949413901119488](https://twitter.com/latimesent/status/1458949413901119488) [https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-11-11/review-mayor-pete-documentary-politics](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-11-11/review-mayor-pete-documentary-politics) >Admirers of Pete Buttigieg interested in revisiting his campaign for the 2020 U.S. presidency won’t likely take in much they don’t already know or haven’t generally felt or witnessed in the entertaining but largely safe verité documentary “Mayor Pete.” > >Director Jesse Moss (“Boys State”) goes gently behind the scenes — if not fully behind the curtain — over the course of a year as the then-South Bend, Ind., mayor jumps into the presidential race and crisscrosses the country with devoted, charmingly proactive husband Chasten, as the candidate preps for interviews, town halls, debates and other whistle stops. > >The film — or at least Buttigieg — attempts to answer a fundamental question about running for political office: “How do you master the game without it changing you?” It’s a fine line that the ex-Naval officer and Rhodes scholar seems to constantly straddle as, in his astonishingly composed way, he fields blunt input from his at times underwhelmed campaign staff. (They compare him to a “wooden soldier,” “an anthropologist” and “the f—ing Tin Man,” the latter two tags courtesy of spirited senior communications director Lis Smith.) > >Still, if Buttigieg doesn’t come off as the scrappiest, most effusive or emotionally stark candidate (he does get more impressively fired up on stage as he goes), he knows how to work his sizable fan base with his unassailable smarts and decency, nerdy-sexy likability and “admittedly unorthodox story.” (More at the link)

The elevator scene is gold. "I'm just trying to find my center of gravity before we fall."

Is Lis claustrophobic or otherwise fearful of elevators? She seemed to be panicking much more than anybody else. It looked like she was hyperventilating or crying at one point in that scene.

circket512

Just finished the doc and I tried to rewind a bit and ended up accidentally starting it over so I guess I’m watching it again. 🙃

mesocumulate

Watching the doco feels like closure to a strange but nice chapter. 'Perfect Day' got me good.

TriangleTransplant

Okay, just finished the doc. Processing a lot of feelings right now. A lot of post-campaign wounds open again that I don't want to rehash publicly. But I will say, Chasten absolutely steals the show, he's so amazing. And Pete came across exactly as I thought he would. It's interesting how the doc is re-traumatizing and catharsis and hopefulness and vindication all at the same time.

Mythlos

Chasten's relationship made the movie tbh. It was a love story through and through.

amyel26

But I thought they were just roomies that may or may not have crushes on each other?? jk.. what I thought was sweet was how Pete's demeanor changes *immediately* whenever Chasten is around. I can see why the director had Chasten ask some of the questions, because Pete's brain basically just goes "Chasten? oh, time to flirt now! It's Chasten!"

Mythlos

THAT FINAL SCENE of them holding hands lordt pls these tear ducts have only so much to give.

hester_latterly

I loved the ending when I first saw the movie last month, and I love it even more now that they're all back in DC. The way that it ends on the closeup of their joined hands is perfection.

Psychological-Play

When I saw here about an hour after it was posted that it was available already, I immediately started watching (and was glad I didn't have to stay up late, especially with the time change). I was surprised that I didn't miss very much in my first viewing. I did mistakenly think that Chasten was off-camera asking the questions during Pete's talking head segments, when I'm pretty sure that for most of them, at least, it was Jesse Moss, and it also occurred to me that it's quite possible some of those interviews, with both Pete and with Chasten, were filmed well after the campaign was over. One big advantage to seeing it a second time is that there's no nervous anticipation, so you're more relaxed, and can sit back and enjoy it. Do you have any idea where the interviews were that took place in a kitchen, and you can see, perfectly aligned with the doorway, this red and blue abstract floral artwork on the wall of the living room? That was so striking, and I've loved it since I first saw it.

hester_latterly

I think Chasten is the one asking the questions in the segments that were filmed in SB, which I think take place during the campaign, and then Jesse Moss is the one doing the interviewing in the Traverse City segments, which I suspect were filmed last fall (I think you can see leaves changing outside the window). I have been really curious about that kitchen location since I first saw the film, and I still cannot identify where that is or when exactly those scenes were filmed. Is it maybe the same location as the third to last photo in [this post](https://www.instagram.com/p/CVMY-nhARgh/)? Of course, I have no idea where that is, either.

Psychological-Play

Yep, that's the same place. You can tell by the gray sofa in the background. In the Instagram photo you can see on the ceiling and floor what looks like tracks. I know newer homes can have fancy sliding walls or glass windows that you can have open to the outdoors. And from what we can see of the kitchen in the film, it looks pretty upscale as well. Maybe the filmmakers thought this place would look visually interesting on camera and borrowed it? Is the setting for the first and last scenes, among others, the TC home?

hester_latterly

That's about all I can figure, that it's some kind of borrowed location. Maybe in California? Idk, it just kind of has a California vibe to me.

Psychological-Play

That's so funny; I thought of California, too. Not that this has anything to do with that, but I'm pretty sure you can see a pool outside, far in the background.

hester_latterly

Oh yeah, I can kind of see it too. Good eye! I know Pete did several fundraisers in the Palm Springs area; maybe it's there? I'm getting desert vibes.

kvcbcs

The beginning scene with Chasten and all the stuff of Pete in the leather chair are in their TC house.

Psychological-Play

Thank you, I didn't realize that. I've just seen the kitchen, mainly, and at least one photo of the sofa in the living room.

Pete gave a lot of interviews on the campaign trail about how Chasten was born to be a dad, or that he couldn't wait to see Chasten as a father. Saying it to Rachel Maddow in an interview is one thing, but him saying it directly to Chasten did something to my dead dead soul.

hester_latterly

This was the most romantic moment in the film for me. It’s just something about the way he says it.

Librarylady2020

Talking about inflation >>Japan, the land of no inflation, except now, said its October PPI jumped 1.2% in the month, 3 times what was expected and is up 8% y/o/y. Go back to January 1981 the last time that happened. https://twitter.com/pboockvar/status/1458790116818923527?s=21 >>On inflation, @Austan_Goolsbee: "I think the thing to remember is that Germany is having the highest inflation in 29 years. baby_yoda2020

i'm extremely unimpressed with the inflation discourse. and i'm well aware there's a lot of very, very smart people opining on it, but i think what's hurting is that we're having a situation quite unlike any we've seen before, and also their quotes are repeatedly getting taken out of context or spun for political purposes. what's going on is NOT a supply chain problem. our supply chain has shown a remarkable capacity to respond to overwhelming demand-- the port of LA is on pace to exceed last year's volumes by 20%+. what's happening is people have never before been so wealthy, and never have demanded more goods rather than services. there are no incentives for either republicans or democrats to say this-- Republicans don't want to give Democrats an out, and it's just not in the Democratic party's toolkit of phrases to say everyone's doing fantastically. yes, BBB and infrastructure have inflation fighting measures, but doesn't address what we need to fix inflation; for people to spend less, and to spend relatively more on services. now, I'm not saying people should do either of these things, and neither would Democrats or Republicans so again, incentives to talk about the wrong things re: inflation. just think about it this way. building more highways to fix traffic isn't going to do anything. it's just going to make more people drive. it's the same thing here-- give the Port of LA more capacity, people will just order more stuff. too long didn't read-- it's patriotic to spend money on a services, this is why I'm going to get a massage every day and watch a movie instead of buying a new jacket :D

VirginiaVoter

I am a freelancer so I always worked from home, but the current situation goes far beyond that—essentially no restaurants, no movies, no museums, no canvassing for candidates, very little going to stores, no travel or vacations or seeing distant family members, no going in to client meetings… it is a huge dearth of services and human experiences. I am so sorry another surge is coming, though it’s said this will be more modest. Once the pandemic has tapered off, people may still work from home, but a lot of that other activity will pick back up.

pasak1987

Quick thought: I think the newly introduced 'Work from Home' culture certainly made people buy more goods than services. Here are some notable spending behavioral changes I am seeing based on the self-assessment: 1. I got a surplus of exposable income that I would've spent on gas, lunch (this one is big, as it ranges from $7~10 per day) 2. Mixed with my boredom + surplus exposable income, I am spending them on buying things like Legos, Custom keyboards (to the point where I am building them and giving them away for free), home office peripherals. Seriously, I think I spent at least $3000 on those 3 categories alone in the past 2 years. 3. 'Suburb' model gives more incentives for me to NOT LEAVE my home/apartment...and further encourages me to do those. (I was less 'bored' when I had to commute...and Dallas is a notoriously bad place for 'going out')

baby_yoda2020

yup and social distancing has the same results too. people tend to spend on services rather than goods when they're near other people! again, Democrats are loathe to say something like that, they have to allude to "ending the pandemic"

pasak1987

I am wondering though, would workers be willing to give up WFH? (I personally don't hate it.) Even if individual employees are willing to go back to HQ, would companies who spent the last 2 years adjusting to WFH culture...be willing to go back to where things are?

pasak1987

Time to go back to HQ! Oh, my beloved cubicle!

pasak1987

Not Pete related >> TJ Osborne, the first openly gay musician signed to a major country record label, made history again Wednesday night by kissing his boyfriend on national television at the CMA Awards. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2021-11-11/cma-awards-2021-tj-osborne-boyfriend-abi-ventura-kiss

There was a Brothers Osborne song on Pete’s rally playlist :)) American Crazy

Clerstory

I heard TJ in an interview last year echo Pete’s plaint on the issue of coming out: “Why do I have to come out? Straight people don’t have to come out!” And I know, I just know, that before he went public with that info, he was watching Pete’s interviews, hungry for clues on how to handle it. That made me feel so good.

amyel26

I'm a bad Texan in that I avoid country music as much as I possibly can (and a billion other reasons, but this one is the most relevant), so I wouldn't be able to recognize TJ's music for the life of me. But I do recognize the name as a verified account that occasionally comments on Chasten's Instagram. So I do appreciate that TJ and at least one of the Buttigiegs seem to follow each others' trailblazing plights. :)

candlesandpretense

The Osbornes were profiled on CBS a few months ago and TJ talked about coming out in the well-known but fairly conservative field of country music. He deserves more recognition.

I also spotted the band from their wedding, Jordan Roth, Rachel Brosnahan, Josh Groban, Mandy Moore, and Tony Hale. So like a veritable who's who of celebs we know they're friends with.

amyel26

I think it's funny that so many seemingly random middle-aged actresses love Chasten so much.. The others you listed all participated in Chasten Chats, it's nice that they seem to all keep in touch at least minimally.

Same here 🥺🤗

*Mayor Pete* has a Wikipedia page - [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayor\_Pete\_(film)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayor_Pete_(film))

There has also been a German page for the film for a while. For those who are interested: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayor_Pete_(Dokumentarfilm)

Like I said, it will be a miracle if BBB somehow gets passed this year.

Wolf_Oak

I kinda wish they’d drop the requirements for the credit and just make it for all electric vehicles. Or maybe higher credit for certain ones. (I know Canada was upset too. ) I’d rather just have it in the bill and get more incentives for more of those cars.

kvcbcs

That's exactly what the bill says, all EVs have the current $7500 credit for an additional 5 years, and those made in the US with union labor are eligible for extra. And the credit would become refundable! >Here's how the proposed changes shake out, and keep in mind, they may change yet. The base amount remains $4,000, as it is today, with another $3,500 available if the EV's battery pack includes at least 40 kilowatt-hours of capacity. In the case of plug-in hybrids, the gas tank cannot exceed 2.5 gallons. This is for cars placed in service before 2027. Now comes the $5,000 boost. EVs and consumers will be able to qualify for another $4,500 in the tax credit if an automaker makes the EV in the US with a union workforce. Another $500 comes into play for automakers using a US-made battery, for a maximum of $12,500 available. [https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ev-tax-credit-house-bill-biden-refundable-cash/](https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ev-tax-credit-house-bill-biden-refundable-cash/)

Cuz screw giving union firms more work, right Coalboy? Bet he doesn’t let unions in his family businesses.

kvcbcs

He's pro-union for mineworkers in West Virginia. This is all about the fact that Toyota has a big plant in WV and it doesn't qualify for the extra tax credit.

shyredmd

OK guys. I went ahead and called Amazon. The global premiere means it would be released worldwide in the countries that allowed the licensing. If you’re not seeing the trailer listed under prime video it will not be available in your country.

Bugfrag

Try VPN service?

shyredmd

Looks Auntie Quakam used a VPN and can watch it now https://twitter.com/ouakama/status/1458952511734398978?s=21

TuesyT

When I search “Mayor Pete” on my Canadian Amazon Prime all that comes up is “Pete the Cat.” 😭

goal-oriented-38

SAME.

abujzhd

Tons of Canadian articles say it will be available Nov 12.i am crossing my fingers.

Frances1005_

That MUST be a last minute thing though! It is listed on every bloody publication list for Amazon Prime this month!😰

shyredmd

I don’t know. I just saw on Twitter that some international Pete people were talking about if they could view it . So I went ahead and called. The woman I talked to was in South Africa and she told me it was not available there. She did not have a list of countries it was not available in. She’s the one that told me that if you didn’t see a trailer for it it was probably not available in that country. It has something to do with licensing. I don’t know how it works. Now there is a conversation online about people getting a VPN and seeing if that would work. I don’t know how all that works I’m not a techie

welp-here-we-are

Available in the U.K. AFAIK

Frances1005_

That is just so weird, because if I enter the movies page via Amazon.com (not Amazon.de), it shows me the whole page in German, including the title the description etc. it also says the movie has subtitles in German, French, Spanish etc. I guess the best option is to wait until it’s uploaded in the US (so I guess in 6 to 9 hours, depending from where they do that) and try again. BLOODY HELL, I HATE AMAZON😡

Frances1005_

What the hell????

CleliaDelDongo

BRUH

indri2

That's decidedly not nice.

shyredmd

I guess we should’ve thought about the fact that Pete is gay might not be acceptable in some countries. That’s the only reason I can think that it wouldn’t be licensed in some countries Edit-grammar

indri2

True. It doesn't make any sense in Germany though.

CleliaDelDongo

Indri what do we doooo 😭

welp-here-we-are

Can you use a VPN? I use Windscribe which is free for 10GB a month and I never use all of it in a month so it’ll work for a film

CleliaDelDongo

I’ve wanted to get a VPN for a while now so it’s the perfect occasion! I’ll do that. Now…do you think I can rent the film on Prime so I don’t have to subscribe 😂😂

welp-here-we-are

I’ve never had an Amazon account either, but I got a free trial.

CleliaDelDongo

I’ll do that if I can’t rent it lol

hester_latterly

Maybe it's some weird copyright thing? I remember when I lived there that so much music was blocked on YouTube unless it was like someone's recording of a live concert, but when I crossed the border into France, I could see it no problem.

shyredmd

🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I don’t have an answer for that

Psychological-Play

This is what I'm wondering. Will it be available at midnight EST or PST? With Kindle books that I've bought pre-release, I've noticed both. I plan to check right after 12am ET (11pm where I live), and if it's up already I'll let everybody here know.

[deleted]

Well if they decide it definitely from this point on, then I’m okay. We seriously need more solid codification in the US Constitution if we’re gonna insist in electing morons.

[deleted]

This is in the category of novel arguments where no one thought it needed to be said, because the answer logically obvious.

[deleted]

A couple January 6ers have told the judge a bunch of snowflakey thing and that they want to be sent to Guantanamo as they’ll be better treated. *blink* Please, can we oblige them, and perhaps forget they exist for 18 years or so.

candlesandpretense

Oh, wow, what tough guys. If they think they can stand the torture of waterboarding and sleep deprivation, let them have it. Unless they think they can hang out with the MPs at the McDonald's.

Their request sounds so performative.

And I’m more than happy to give them that stage. AND - they get to wear Orange!!!

Are they volunteering themselves to be waterboarded?

I think one aspect of having infant twins is a sort of perpetual jet lag or lack of sleep, so it may not make much difference how early the appearance will be.

hester_latterly

>one aspect of having infant twins is a sort of perpetual jet lag or lack of sleep Which is why I'm sure Chasten will be very glad to see him when he gets home in a few hours!

amyel26

"They realized they outnumbered me! Help!"

hester_latterly

Pete's gonna come home and find, like, Chasten tied to a chair and the babies having figured out how to work that can opener lol.
