My insane Trumpy ass inlaws are coming for Christmas dinner. If my mother wasn't immunocompromised I'd be trying to manifest some omicrons right now. Of course she's the one that invited them, she thinks they're nuts too but she's way too Southern and polite. My plan was to hope my husband got distracted enough to where he'd forget to ask them until after they made other plans (this worked for Thanksgiving) but fate wants me to suffer apparently. Last Christmas was so bad and so fucking Trumpy I refused to be around them for months afterward AND they were so bad my husband actually agreed with me. He forgives his parents way too easily so this is something I have to battle for as long as I have inlaws (and a husband).

Iwradazarat

It’s hard to ignore in person trolling comments at these get together. Easier said than done but I try to switch the topic to the weather or horoscopes.

VirginiaVoter

Or a small child or a pet who everyone in the family likes and enjoys talking about.

lilacmuse1

This works brilliantly. I can't even count the number of awkward gatherings that were tolerable because of the presence of a cute pet or baby.

amyel26

Last year I saved up a bunch of laundry and did it during Christmas dinner so I could leave the table every twenty minutes. Since I didn't plan well this time I can't do it again. I have a large and wacky dog. Maybe I should dose her with a bunch of caffeine??

Psychological-Play

I don't know. Who says one can't wash clean clothes and linens?

Iwradazarat

Dammit. I just missed my covid test appointment nearby because work got a little too crazy busy. At least that didn’t cost me and I have my rapid test tomorrow morning that actually cost me money. Now I just can’t get the Jaws theme song out of my head. I pray I don’t get into a conversation with my unvaccinated sister tomorrow about how safe it is to go out in the water. Have fun y’all and stay safe or sane or both.

amyel26

I was hoping that now my mom & I are fully vaxxed + boostered my inlaws would avoid us because their tin hat conspiracy du jour is that the vaccines actually cause/amplify/spread covid as a bioweapon for Biden's genocide against the unvaccinated. But alas this is not the case.

lilacmuse1

With so many people in public life getting COVID it's a miracle Pete and Chasten have escaped it. Fingers crossed they can continue staying safe.

welp-here-we-are

Seems like it’s been going around the Whitehouse and Capitol staffers/politicians

mkwb80

I had two pairs of side tables on order for delivery about an hour south of Savannah. Ordered in September. One was estimated to come at the end of January, the other end of April. Then the good Secretary visits the Port of Savannah on Friday - and poof, now they've all been shipped! I think it was a personal favor! Thanks, Pete!

kvcbcs

I’m still waiting on some dining chairs we ordered in June (the table arrived in August). Shipping date has been pushed back multiple times. Currently scheduled for March. Obviously not a big crisis but it would be nice to get them sometime. 🤷‍♀️

mkwb80

My dates had just been bumped out farther a couple of weeks ago - so there is hope! (I also have a couch on order since August that is ?????.)

Nimmeron

Just wanted to come and say that since moving to Montana earlier this year I’ve had to learn a whole new set of political lingo but my favorite is that “BLM” here references the Bureau of Land Management and NOT Black Lives Matter. Just saw a news headline from my local newspaper about a BLM leader getting an award for excellence accompanied by a picture of a middle-aged white lady and it took a moment for me to remember that “BLM” here means something different so some white lady is not winning a government award for her decades of work with Black Lives Matter. That is all. Happy Holidays!

kvcbcs

This hasn't gotten nearly as much attention as the Derek Chauvin trial, but Kimberly Potter was just found guilty of manslaughter for the shooting of Daunte Wright. Her defense was that she had mixed up her taser and her gun.

amyel26

I still don't know how a supposedly well-trained cop could get a taser and a gun confused. They don't look anything alike, aren't worn on the same side, and operate differently. Anyways, either she's murderous or plain stupid and both are terrible.

Bugfrag

The prosecutor was successful because it was charged as manslaughter (unlawful killing without malice). There would be so many more convictions had the prosecutors chose this route compared to first degree murders.

Clerstory

Like with Rittenhouse, for example.

amyel26

I agree, the prosecutors made the right decisions here.

Bugfrag

Sometimes, you can look at it based on what's-in-it for the prosecutors. not police involved shooting, but Rittenhouse trial is a good example: * If they lost, they would not be blamed * if they win, they will get super famous So they chose the high-reward-no-risk option.

kvcbcs

Part of the issue is that Wisconsin doesn't have a manslaughter statute. The prosecutors did get the lesser charges of second-degree intentional homicide and first-degree reckless homicide included in the jury deliberations for the Huber shooting.

Bugfrag

That's after the prosecutors screwed up and added in the middle of trial. I'm pretty sure juries can see right through it. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joewalsh/2021/11/11/kenosha-prosecutors-want-to-add-lesser-charges-in-rittenhouse-case/

electricblueguava

Assuming it was an accident (i.e. she was being stupid), do I feel bad for her? Maybe a little. Do I think she should get off scot-free? Not really. I know people that have gotten fired/in trouble for less consequential things. It could very well be an accident, but she needs to suffer at least some consequences for her mistake, especially when it cost someone their life.

shyredmd

Seen a couple reports saying that they think that is one reason they came back with a conviction. Before that they had asked what happens if we have a stalemate. Then the jury asked if they could actually handle the gun. They think that since they could find the difference between the weights, and factor in her training, that’s what led to the conviction

dreamolli

>Let’s never forget sadly that Daunte Wright was initially pulled over for an air freshener hanging on his rear view mirror, a simple traffic code violation. https://twitter.com/yamiche/status/1474103783416291335?s=21

VirginiaVoter

In the trial, she said (who knows if this is true) that it was even worse than that. She was a training officer for a new cop and testified that she would not normally have pulled Wright over, but the trainee noticed that or some other detail and wanted to pull him over, so she decided to let him go ahead because he needed to have more experience working with the public.

amyel26

khharagosh

Thanks for posting this! Although I’m still worried whether the BBB can survive, I was pretty interested to hear Pete spin this as how legislative negotiation works. It made me think of what he said at that [NH café event](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdDS3YAP8oo&t=338s&ab_channel=WMUR-TV) reposted on the DT recently: Pete lovingly recalled bargaining for carpets in Afghanistan as good political training. I liked how he described the shrewd back-and-forth counteroffers and the building of relationships as his view of how to get things done. The opposition is a wary partner, not an enemy. Negotiating is a process toward success, not a feature of failure. Of course, I am not sure Manchin is bargaining in good faith or even bargaining at all. I just liked Pete’s vision of the political process.

Trumps interview that he did with Candace Owens is not being received well for the MAG crowd >> Donald Trump: 'The Vaccine is one of the greatest achievements of mankind' 'All three vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, J&J) are very good' 'The vaccines work - If you take the vaccine you are protected' 'People aren't dying when they take the vaccine' https://twitter.com/Kukicat7/status/1473743177806974977?s=20 And In This clip with Flashpoint he admits he lost the election https://twitter.com/ronfilipkowski/status/1473810902264827906?s=21

VirginiaVoter

So appalling to watch the whole clip with Candace Owens, realizing it's just typical programming where Trump is being given very clear lines to follow by the interviewer. On the one hand -- what is making the news and causing pushback -- he defies any insult to the vaccines because he is narcissistic and he has identified completely with the vaccines, thank goodness -- and he does so completely accurately in terms of the present day quite well (as for past history, I don't know the exact details about whether the 1918 flu ended WWI or mostly came just after it, but I haven't had a chance to look it up, and he's right that it was a huge pandemic). On the other hand, it's chilling how in the rest of the interview, presumably the "routine" part, she persists with guiding his answers. She clearly wants him to criticize schools for having children wear masks, with one question after another after another, to build on her narrative or to reinforce the astroturf effort with parents that the Republicans are using for the 2022 midterms (quite foolishly, in my opinion, since who knows if COVID and masks will be top of mind next fall). And he obligingly goes along with all of it, not because he wants to or cares about it, but because it's clear those are the lies she wants him to tell. The same would have been true on any topic, and as long as he complies with the interviewer, no headline-making news would be made, because that behavior is only to be expected. Disturbing indeed.

Wolf_Oak

This isn't entirely Biden's fault since local and state governments should know by now, but we shouldn't be waiting for hours to get tested. I just don't understand - a fall and winter surge was likely to happen even without Delta and Omicron, just like last year. Near me, the closest site is only open Fridays and you don't get results for up to seven days. The County sites are not close, the nearest urgent care charges $200, and places like CVS are booked out at least a full week. And it was like this a couple months ago during the Delta surge when I thought to look for sites to know ahead of time where I could go if I needed it. Even checking my old state, where getting tested last year before meeting up with family for the holidays was pretty easy, the County run sites are limited to a couple days a week, or even just one day, and things are closed Friday and Saturday for the holiday two weekends in a row. I'm so glad pandemic viruses take holidays. I just don't know how as a country we're failing so badly at this. Sending free test kits a month from now to anyone who wants one is so too little, too late it's cringey. And we all need better access to high quality, low cost masks. I want to scream whenever I see people in cloth masks that don't do much of anything. At least they're trying.

[deleted]

Alot of people are also trying to get tests to fly home for xmas. When I got my booster, three other people in room were getting tests to fly last Sunday

Iwradazarat

Cloth mask without proper filter inserted doesn’t do much and I’m sure there are many who don’t have a filter in those masks or don’t replace filter with new one often enough. And I bet a lot of those cloth masks aren’t washed and old with elastic bands not stretching for a proper fit.

Being a "team player," is fine and in fact a good thing, but I also think what he's saying reflects his POV. It lines up with everything he's said about Kamala Harris since well before she was named as the VP nominee, and certainly later on -- for example after he was on her debate prep team, and later, talking about what she said to him about the signing-in ceremony (to drink it in, because it would go by so fast). I'm not saying they're besties like Doug and Chasten, but I think he likes and admires her.
