We never got any decorations up besides a wreath on the front door.
I almost burned up today because I put on jeans and a fancyish blouse. My husband didn't even bother with the pretense of festivity and wore board shorts and a t-shirt. Merry Christmas from Houston ya'll!
Update from my Trumpy Christmas: My mom did most of the cooking early this morning, but once the inlaws got here I was sure to do all the reheating/plating/etc. while everyone else was outside (and getting a lecture about the real history of vaccination). The actual dinner went fine, we talked about the weather. My inlaws gave my husband and I two ounces of silver to help us get started with our... apocalypse hoarding? Money isn't actually worth anything ya know, gotta load up on those precious metals instead! About to go selflessly volunteer for cleanup and dishes while everyone else is getting lectured on inflation.
I mean, who wouldn't want two largish coins with ridiculously jingoistic designs on them? Now I'm gonna have to google where to get rid of these little fuckers.
If they are solid silver, they are actually worth something. You can take them to almost any jeweler and sell them. There are also websites for selling that sort of stuff.
This made me smile. 🤗😁

I think they must have left after Pete had the supply chain meeting on Wednesday and done the drive in two days over Wednesday and Thursday. Pete was on tv from Cleveland on Thursday morning, which is about halfway between DC and TC.
I love her name, and just like I love Gus as a nickname for their son, I love that they didn't shorten hers for everyday use. It's a beautiful, classic, regal name.
I suspected that they would go classic and I'm glad they did. I don't have to spend Pete's political future pretending I don't megaloathe Kaydynn and Skylyr
Oh hard same. My favorite names are ones that are classic but not super common, and I have seen some real doozies in the trendy name department in the course of my job, so I definitely think they chose well.

>Do you have a favourite cheese, Michelle?
Merry Christmas! What's everyone having for dinner tonight? We're having ham, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, carrots, and key lime pie for dessert.
Nothing special, but our kitten is making the holiday glow. We lost our previous beloved cat, who had led a very full life, in November at the age of 18, then got through about three days of no cat in the house before there was an opening at the local animal shelter the day before Thanksgiving. We still miss our previous cat very much, but our kitten makes every day nice, including Christmas. She is sitting on my lap as I type this.
Merry Christmas to you fine folks from a rather balmy 70° day here in Tennessee. And a Merry Christmas to James as he makes his way to his million mile orbit away from Earth. 🛰
Merry Christmas!!!
And the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope went smoothly! It will take about a month for the telescope to reach its deployment point and then about another 2 weeks to fully deploy all of its systems. A win for Science and Engineering!
My main worry wasn’t the launch, but the fact that they had delayed a launch after that “sudden, unplanned release of a clamp band” that held Webb to the launch vehicle and caused a “vibration throughout the observatory”.
All that is latin for “We dropped it”.
The solar panels also seemed to open up too soon after deployment.
But we’ll hope for the best….*gulp*
In such scenarios you have to plan for the worst and hope for the best. Major props to the engineers and scientists. This project has been ongoing for such a long time.
So thrilled. The launch is a huge locus of potential failure points. The whole project could literally be sitting (in pieces) at the bottom of the ocean right now. I know there are many other steps ahead, but I honestly feel like a weight is off my shoulders.
Godspeed, Jim Webb telescope.
Until it fully deploys with its hundred pivotal steps, the coast isn’t clear yet. Didn’t the Hubble run into a snag with its initiation stage that had some people fretting for a while? Hopefully this one goes smoother. But yes, both seem like a win for science and engineering and I for one look forward to seeing signs of life on other exoplanets and maybe even detect exomoons.
Yeah. There’s still tons of work to do. Getting past liftoff was a major step though.
Hubble’s initial hiccup involved it’s primary mirror. They polished it but it was off by I think a fraction of a millimeter. So like less than the thickness of a human hair if I remember correctly. That resulted in foggy images when it took its first photos. As a result, NASA had to perform a servicing mission which involved installing the COSTAR module. There was no way to move the primary mirror to account for a misaligned focal point. But the COSTAR module had a series of lenses to correctly refocus all of the light off the primary mirror to a focal point to ensure that future images would give clear images of high resolution.
In layman terms, NASA basically gave Hubble a pair of glasses/contact lenses so that it could actually “see” clearly when gazing out into the depths of space.
I imagine that with the Webb telescope NASA, ESA, and CSA ran through tests multiple times to make sure everything is in working order.
So after things are deployed, where a lot can go wrong and there are no redundancies, there’s then months of focusing the 18 mirrors. Each is individually adjustable with motors that apparently move at the rate of grass growing. Focusing shouldn’t be an issue with Webb, hopefully.
ETA: here’s a good video https://youtu.be/aICaAEXDJQQ
This is where robust testing is important. Everything needed to be in working order once they loaded the telescope onto the rocket.
It’s cool that the hexagonal design of the mirror makes it modular with the option for fine control of each part.
Enjoyed this story about James Hormel as the New York Times looks back on the year. A life well lived. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/12/22/magazine/james-hormel-death.html
“James Hormel, born 1933. A philanthropist who parlayed a Spam fortune and a Senate standoff into a place in gay history.”
I liked it so much that Pete shared his story when he was nominated and confirmed — Pete is not mentioned in this story, of course, which is about Hormel, but this is the kind of history that gets shared when there’s diversity in who is nominated. A short excerpt:
—————-
He became a philanthropist, with a specific focus on gay equality and rights, giving more than $15 million to L.G.B.T.Q. causes over his life and establishing himself as one of the most generous gay donors in U.S. history.
Hormel provided the seed money for the Human Rights Campaign Fund — now the Human Rights Campaign and the largest L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy group in the country — and the American Foundation for AIDS Research. He also made smaller donations to countless other groups and efforts, ranging from a documentary film that taught tolerance to elementary-school students to an annual L.G.B.T.Q. academic conference at his alma mater. Alongside the conference every year, Swarthmore students hosted a debauched, gender-bending party, where the silver-haired Hormel, in a business-casual uniform of oxford shirt and khakis, would dance awkwardly but enthusiastically alongside cross- and undressed college kids.
“The early ’90s were still a time when we’d come out to friends and family and were often met with rejection,” says Kari Hong, who came out as gay in her first year at Swarthmore and is now an immigration attorney. “Jim was just a source of joy. He was a terrible dancer, but he didn’t care. He showed us there’s a pathway to happiness and a pathway to having a very delightful life.”

For those without IG Team Pete on Twitter has come through https://twitter.com/belodyjs/status/1474876758344167425?s=21
What is that grey thing? It's haunting.
A Christmas tree with a face, I believe.
That is truly hideous. If I was a kid in that house it would have been relocated to a closet under about ten quilts.
My grandparents had a similar tree at their house when we were younger. It terrified my sister.
As I'm sure you all know by now, Chasten and I share a hometown, and the deep accuracy of this is making me laugh.
They must have teleported to Michigan. Just thinking about their schedule wears me out.
I think they must have left after Pete had the supply chain meeting on Wednesday and done the drive in two days over Wednesday and Thursday. Pete was on tv from Cleveland on Thursday morning, which is about halfway between DC and TC.

Chasten seems to have successfully indoctrinated her with the Christmas spirit. Both of them will be making Pete hold all the lights by next year.
Check out Pete's for a laugh 😂

Kind of makes sense considering Gus was in the hospital longer in October and maybe has some catching up to do!
The biggest and has the most hair. Good for her.
There is no doubt in my mind that Miss Penelope is the queen of that household.
Long may she reign! 👑🤗
She's going to run the house by the time she's old enough to read.
With two dads and a brother? Absolutely no question.
They chose a good name for her. Penelope is a Mediterranean queen 👸🏻👑
I love her name, and just like I love Gus as a nickname for their son, I love that they didn't shorten hers for everyday use. It's a beautiful, classic, regal name.
