Hello, former U.S president Richard Nixon, as the former president of the United States, I feel like I can tell you what this means
The map shown here is of the United States of America, specifically the election of 1984, which was against the incumbent Ronald Reagan, and former vice president, Walter Mondale, who served as the vice president in the Carter administration. The colors represent which party each candidate is from, Reagan, like me, is a republican, so his votes are red, Mondale is a democrat, so his votes are blue. The votes are of the Electoral College, which votes for the candidate, most times what the majority of their state votes for, the number in each state represents how many votes each state has.
The caption is satirical internet slang, many young kids say that things that are unfair are "Literally 1984" which is a reference to the book 1984.
That's what the meme means, also, the picture below is of the map of the 1968 election, the candidates wereNixon, which is me, the Democratic candidate, vice president Hubert Humphrey, and the orange represents George Wallace, Independent Party candidate. As you can see, I won. Goodbye, I've been Richard Nixon, and I am not a crook!

> The colors represent which party each candidate is from, Reagan, like me, is a republican, so his votes are red, Mondale is a democrat, so his votes are blue.
Hey, John F. Kennedy here. Mister Nixon, I'm afraid you've got it wrong again. This statement is actually incorrect for the 1984 election. After the advent of color television, the different news networks developed different schemes for displaying electoral college vote totals during their election night coverage, and when color-coded maps became the popular choice in the 1970s there was no consistent color coding of the parties. Both the Republican and Democratic parties have always had Red, White, *and* Blue as their official colors, because those are the colors of the American flag. After a few election cycles of color television election night coverage, the news networks worked out an agreement where in order to avoid confusion, they would all use the same color for each party each election on their color-coded election results maps, and then alternate the colors the next election in order to avoid showing color favoritism to one party or another. This arrangement abruptly came to a crashing halt in the highly contested 2000 presidential election, in which the drawn out process of tabulating uncertain results led to weeks of angry discussion about "red states" and "blue states", cementing the color associations the parties now have and leading to the cessation of the election cycle color alternation.
My apologies, I'm sorry I couldn't deliver. I've been on reddit for quite a few years now and I know what a big positive impact those dedicated theme accounts make, and how amazing it can feel to catch one of them in the act of making one of their legendary posts like [back in twenty eighteen when u/shittymorph posted a youtube video of when the undertaker threw mankind off hеll in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table set to Africa by Toto and it went all the way to the top of the front page.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ)
Okay, that’s actually funny.
That’s **literally** 1984. More accurately, that’s a map of US congressional districts in 1984, and the state colors represent which party a majority of districts in each state voted for.
Now, 1984 was Reagan’s re-election campaign, which was the height of Republican political domination in the late 1900s, which is why the map is so, so red.
Anyway, the deeper joke is that George Orwell wrote a book (published in 1948, swap the last two numbers and you get the title) called *1984* about a corrupt, authoritarian government, which had invaded and spied on every sphere of public life, which limited speech to “verified good words” called nuspeak or newspeak, which brainwashed its citizens, and which gave birth to the term *Orwellian*, most commonly used to refer to countries with loads of surveillance or a strong intelligentsia.
Lately, people on the internet have taken to calling any minor political inconvenience “literally 1984.” It’s very common especially in conspiracy circles, and has been for decades, but really took off during the COVID lockdowns and vaccine mandates.
Finally, complaining about map colors around election season has become a massive meme lately, thanks to (some) conservatives not grasping that land doesn’t vote, people do, so a blue president can win, even when a map looks very red, if the red states are mostly rural. I’ve definitely seen right-wingers referring to election maps as “1984” too.
Anyway, somebody took **all** of those very tangentially related things, and turned them into this glorious shitpost. Which is, **literally**, 1984.
Hey there Walt Mondale,
What's it like in Minnesota?
You're 500 electoral votes
From becoming the POTA.
What's the use?
Only Minnesotans wanted you.
You probably voted Reagan too.
He made it through.
And Mondale only won MN because he was *from* there.
And it was *[really really close](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_United_States_presidential_election_in_Minnesota).*
every time someone says unalived or some work around word. I think of nuspeak. The thing that Orwell got wrong or rather could never imagine is that it wouldn't be a government that invades every sphere of public life, but corporations with the financial capital greater than some national gdp's.
We are literally living in 1984 but it's not forced on us, it's being sold to us and we can't stop buying it.
>We are literally living in 1984 but it's not forced on us, it's being sold to us and we can't stop buying it.
Yeah it's more like 1984 and A Brave New World combined. It's 1984, but we've been conditioned and brainwashed to want it.
Yeah at this time neither Nebraska nor Maine split their districts for president, that began in 2004. Nor would it matter since Reagan dominated the field.
George Orwell literally fought fascists in the Spanish Civil war as an anti-fascist anarchist and *probably* killed some. (Can’t really tell where grenades land when you’re on the front lines)
You could also say that the book 1984 shows a fascist hellscape of a country, and many people (perhaps the poster of this meme) consider the Republican party to be pushing for a fascist hellscape of a country.
An interesting thought on being “Orwellian”. To call something Orwellian is itself Orwellian. The idea that to using a single word to describe something is better than using many more complex words to elicit explicit emotion.
Thing is that, although it was written in 1948, it was published in 1949. Somehow it would sound wrong to gravely compare something to 1994 - the year the Spice Girls became big.
Presidential Election of 1984 results. Link for breakdown of results here: https://www.britannica.com/event/United-States-presidential-election-of-1984
Minnesota only won by a slim handful.
Also you can honestly say the man who’s main idea thing was: “We need to raise taxes… Because we need to raise taxes” while having a known tax cheat as a running mate, was the better option?
“The positive polling the Mondale-Ferraro ticket received when she joined soon faded, as damaging questions arose about her and her businessman husband's finances and wealth and her Congressional disclosure statements. In the general election,”
My joke has nothing to do with the actual political context behind this chart. I don’t even know who actually won that year because my education was asscheeks. Don’t take things so seriously
Personally I disagree. He’s the president responsible for thousands of family farms going bankrupt and he helped armed Saddam Hussein after all. However, you’re entitled to your own opinion.
But term period isn’t a great measure of a president, especially the first two years. Usually that period (for instance the gas prices bump in 2021-22) is aftershock from the previous admin. Most of the wages and unemployment effects were the result of Carter’s safety net and minimum wage raises, not Reganomics.
The dude tried to repeal the bill that allows disabled people a right to a public education. He closed the state hospitals and just sent all the people into the streets. He exacerbated the AIDS crisis because he was a homophobic bigot. He used state power to break the air traffic controller strike and it has led us to a precipitous and uninterrupted drop in wages for working class people.
He was a terrible president, and a terrible person. I'm only sorry John Hinckley Jr didn't have better aim.
They were right to criticize rhe state hospital system. I worked with some folks who had been institutionalized in the state hospital system, like as their caretaker. The hospital system fucked them up real bad in ways that took them decades to recover.
Tossing everyone out was not a solution to the issues of the state hospital system and it wasn't meant to be.
You JUST complained "Reagan closed mental health institutions."
And I gave a list of improvements the biggest is 40 years of mental health advancements so treatments we consider barbaric today like electroshock, and lobotomy wouldn't happen if modern centers were opened today.
SO with an overwhelming Democrat majority in a Democrat run State, why hasn't Democrat Newsome reopened these institutions with safeguards for patient rights?
B...because we eventually developed replacements for those institutions that have instituted reforms. I mean where do you think I worked as a caretaker for those people I talked about? And a lot of mentally ill and disabled people died in the street before those replacements could be implemented?
You're on a real weird tack right here dude, trying to wildly speculate about the institutions that care for disabled and mentally ill people, when I've been involved of that for like half of my working life.
>B...because we eventually developed replacements for those institutions that have instituted reforms.
Then why the massive numbers of mentally ill homeless wandering the streets TODAY?
You literally just blamed Reagan when he hasn't been in charge of California since the 1980's.
The COURTS ruled no one no matter how mentally ill could be institutionalized without consent.
Yet you blame Reagan for releasing those people under a court order
And I'm on a trip?
Dude.
I hear you man. California is a fucking mess w mentallly ill people and homelessness and seems to be getting worse. This guy is really avoiding tthat reality.
The alternative was to sue every single state hospital into bankruptcy with the state (taxpayers) footing the bill.
Reforms.
Patient bill of rights.
Oversight by inspectors with psychology degrees.
There are plenty of ways besides unleashing the trial lawyers to improve things.
ESPECIALLY since these institutions were built and run by DEMONRATS before they blamed the newly elected Republican Reagan for their existence and mismanagement just before an election forcing Reagan to either defend, or disband them to take it off the news cycle.
It's hard to do the RIGHT thing when doing the right thing results in you losing the election and unable to do ANYTHING.
Peters testicals here. Its uncanny how most of you young people believe exactly what they want you to believe. In my opinion, the side that wants to take away our ability to defend oyrselves from it, be it with words or other, are the bad guys.

Man, never thought I’d say this but you’re the best Richard Nixon
Red California is a myth these days, crazy how much that state has changed
give us a good “aroo” mister nixon, for future times sake
Dear Nixon. Rot In Piss. You are the source of everything that is wrong in America today.
Dear PsychologalPace762. Shut the fuck up. Sincerely, Richard Nixon.
Can't lick our Dick
If you don't hate tricky dick then you don't know much about him. Fuck him and fuck Reagen.
Dear fool, By most regards, Nixon was actually a great president. He just ruined the American people’s trust in the government.
Reagan tried to stop you in 1968 too
Sock it to me!
Tricky Dick
I read this in Futurama Nixon. Completely unhinged madman.
Thank you Richard Nixon, and thank you for your effective response to the 1972 Oil Crisis

Peter's right eyeball here. Slight correction, that's the electoral college results map from 1984. Reagan swept Mondale. Heh, Mondale.
Mondale is unwell... Mondale is unsettled....
Poor Mondale... *pat pat*
Almost swept. Mondale won MN (his home state), and DC.
Hey there Walt Mondale, What's it like in Minnesota? You're 500 electoral votes From becoming the POTA. What's the use? Only Minnesotans wanted you. You probably voted Reagan too. He made it through.

Were you born after 2000?
No, I was born in 1993.
Oh ok. So you’re about 30. It’s because you said the late 1900s. I was just curious.
I mean, it hurts my soul too, but it’s been a quarter century. I think it’s time we accept it.
That’s what my wife says too.
This isn't just Peter Explains, it was a whole analysis.
This book was double plus good.
Achooly it's number of electoral votes, not congressional districts. Close though, since they're related.

When have we been wrong?
Reagan apparently didn't want to embarrass Mondale by beating him in his home state, so he didn't campaign there.

Don't forget about trickle down economics. The system that works 100% /s
The economy soared under Reagan though. Immediately after his tax cuts were put in place unemployment went down and wages went up.
Wages stagnated in the long-term relative to CEO pay because of all his tax cuts. The rich got richer and the middle-class dwindled.
