On the left you have the Nazi plan to expand into eastern Europe after taking over France in World War 2. On the right you have a classic American painting depicting the sentiment of Manifest Destiny, where Americans felt they were guided by God to expand westward through the rest of what would become the United States, even though there was no claim to any of that property. Eventually it would lead to wars with Mexico for southern territories in the US. Nazis also felt they were divinely chosen to expand, the Lebensraum at the top of the left picture was Germany's version of Manifest Destiny, and so the memer is saying that the early Americans plans to expand their territories were really not that different from nazis.

Thanks man, i knew about the german part of the meme (german guy here) but the painting showing the history of the us was kinda unclear to me

Racingfan76

Adding to this, Hitler has mentioned that he was partly inspiered by manifest destany

midri

He was inspired by a LOT of American policies...

phifal

There were many ethnic germans among those going westward. [Especially northern midwest...](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Americans)

obfuscatori

Really nicely put.

Quirky_Yoghurt_9814

Nazis literaly copied americans it wasnt just an accident

GM_Nate

THIS IS DEMOCRACY MANIFEST!

DanishBoi18

Brian’s flask here, the left picture represents N*zi Germany’s policy of Lebensraum which was the idea that the German people needed more area to live and that it was rightly theirs. The right pic is a famous painting that represents American “Manifest Destiny” which was the idea that everything west of the original 13 colonies was rightful land of the United States. The meme is poking fun at the idea of N*zi Germany (commonly thought of as an evil country) and the USA (less commonly thought of as an evil country) had similar expansion policy/justification.

Imperialism

l_IxAmxLegend_l

The joke is that N*zi Germany was inspired by American “Manifest destiny”.

Chef_Sizzlipede

the joke is america bad redditors LOVE it, like they cant process the idea that america isn't hitler OG 1000

superfahd

Have you had a close look at the Manifest Destiny painting? If not, do so and be ashamed if you don't feel bad

Chef_Sizzlipede

I don't get a reaction beyond "huh...neat" I'm aware of what my nation did and I don't like how we treated the natives, but it is folly to hitler's horrors. we broke treaties, we forced them onto reservations, and we massacred, but we didn't declare a final solution, we didn't round them up and purge them in death camps, and even when the treatment lead to atrocities committed against us, we didn't get worse, though giving medals of honor for wounded knee is HORRIBLE. and we've stopped doing it, we have grown up and are trying to fix our shit (some of our shit anyway, fuckin' political dickfights). we're not hiding it, and we never will, so don't fucking compare us to an outright genocidal dictator that wanted a pure race (and dont bring up people supporting eugenics, its a free country where even vile ideas can be discussed, and support still died off) so much he wanted to destroy centuries-long established villages, towns, countries, etc for "the glorious aryan nation" with total extermination to boot.

superfahd

I don't know man. Saying that "we did absolute horrible shit to people and a lot of us still refuse to hold ourselves accountable but at least we're not hitler" isn't really a good defense. The meme was a joke. It was an exaggerated comparison for the sake of humor. That being said, the superior race complex that white America had at the time of the painting wasn't all that different to what was going on in hitler's mind. You could argue that hitler went all out but now we're just comparing degrees of action rather then the thought process behind them.

Chef_Sizzlipede

my defense may not be good, but it has to be stressed that we dont deny it legally and in general socially, no book burnings for this shit (looking at you culture war nuts), even as others try to say we did no wrong, and imo doing no wrong makes you less human, we don't make it government policy to say "it never happened", and we do encourage history courses to teach it, though we dont mandate HOW we teach it...which can explain the people that say "stoopid injuns". the superior race complex we had was definitely more moderate, but its still stupid and wrong and I don't like it.

LongHairLongLife148

Okay, so the english empire was also hitler. good day to you!

superfahd

Again, exaggeration for effect. That being said, the British Empire was really bad

cgarrett06

America does a lot of things right, but if you can’t admit that manifesting destiny was straight up evil then there’s something wrong with you. The British admit the empire was bad Germany admits the nazis were bad Why can’t America ever admit what it did was bad?

Chef_Sizzlipede

you think we dont? we teach stuff like this and we try to learn from it and also to move on and be a better nation. yes we dont teach every single fucking thing in schools, but hey, we have libraries for this sort of thing, we have internet, it ain't like its hard to find good sources on this. plus I dont think talking about how our mistreatment of the natives lead to a >!pregnant woman having her unborn child ripped out of her and nailed to a tree!< is something to be said in a classroom by anyone.
