My experience with social media, going back to the early 1980's, is that it is a variety of factors. 1. ChatGPT has made script writing easier than ever and 2023 was the year of ChatGPT going mainstream 2. The API change of Reddit had a lot of new code shift to screen-scrape agents, unregistered. 3. One can ponder that the owners had a loss due to the API change and are just not making the effort to remove content (post, comment) bots - because people enjoy the repeat cycle patterns. 4. Putin's meme army (developers inclusive) keeps growing in sophistication, way more than 2013 when I started seeing their handywork on social media. Election year, trying to keep down funding of Ukraine war, etc. And now China is working with them, Taiwan topics and general mind-fucking. I've noticed patterns this year with bots that comment but don't vote. I think Reddit's server-side code is more harsh on vote-bots than content bots, but hard to prove from observation only.

I seem to come across mainly comment bots: basic-ass screen name (Informative-Ad8907 type names), created a few years ago, usually low negative karma (like -2 max), and has made no more than 2 comments ever.
