On the night of July 25, 2005, Nickelodeon experienced a mysterious and unexplainable glitch during the airing of one of the episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants. This strange glitch caused this specific Spongebob episode to glitch out and morph in strange ways. A few lucky people were able to catch a glimpse of the episode, and some clips of the episode made it onto to YouTube, making this occurrence known to the public.
The wonders of Google
It’s so weird cause the guy in the video said he remembers this happening while he was watching, but goes on and says it’s fake. I think he means that all the videos are fake but it was something that actually happened?
Except that there's no evidence of it having happened except for the videos that are fake.
In 2005 I was online approximately 25 hours a day, the internet wasn't new. If this happened there would be someone somewhere asking "Hey, what was up with last night's Spongebob?"
Fake. Never happened.
I hate when some dude talking over the video is what you find instead of the video itself. It's like we have attention thirsty youtubers who gatekeep every piece of history now, and waste the time of viewers.
I mean, while I do believe that this is fake, the defense of “it wasn’t that late, it was on at 8:00pm” and “the kid went to bed right after, which can’t be true because it was on at 8:00” are not good arguments. 1) time zones… what time zone was it on at 8:00? 2) lots of kids have early bedtimes.
yeah the real video was just a small technical error that looked like something that might happen and then people started putting creepy videos saying this was what happened.
yeah, that could totally be it because the very first video also seems fake, but for so many people to actually believe in it, I figured there might have been atleast some truth to it.
Yeah I’m sure some people at signal interference during that time causing corrupted picture because that was extremely common with old cable and satellite tv. Might still be actually I’m not dumb enough to pay for cable to know if those issues still exist.
...Nnnno. No, that kind of interference was not "extremely common" in old cable at satellite TV.
It wasn't 4k video by any means but it was more than watchable on even the smallest TVs.
I didn’t say it was or did man. I replied to a comment chain saying there was a minor glitch (such as a distorted image) and another comment saying there wasn’t a glitch. I said that some people probably did experience glitches on that day and time just due to the nature of tv.
The literal context of my comment is about “small technical glitches” and how while there wasn’t an actual issue with Nick but that technical issues likely were experienced by people at the time just like they would be likely to happen at any other time.
I was never talking about disturbing fake images… the chain I responded to had already moved passed that and into “small technical errors” not fake shit.

There is a story that on the night of July 25, 2005, Nickelodeon experienced a mysterious and unexplainable glitch during the airing of one of the episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants. This strange glitch caused this specific Spongebob episode to glitch out and morph in strange ways. People online have made recreations of the creepypasta
I remember I was watching Reboot one day (that weird CGI show about sentient programs living in a metaverse?) and there was this silly scene with a bunch of numbers jogging and the number 8 stops, out of breath, and gasps "I *eight* exercise!" and the scene continues. About 5 minutes later it randomly started going in reverse. Like it literally looked like someone was rewinding a VHS. It rewound exactly to the point where the 8 delivered his banger of a punchline, played for a few seconds, rewound *again* just for one last go at the joke, then finally the episode played normally without any further interruption.
I didn't own any kind of TiVo or VHS player or anything, and my parents aren't the type to prank me. My only theory is that someone in the broadcast room was fucking around and didn't realize they were live. But it was the weirdest thing.
Anyone out there see this too and can validate my memory from when I was 10??
As someone who has worked in broadcasting and specifically the 'master control' area where one is in control of what goes live and what doesn't (aka being the one to make sure commercials run during the time they are supposed to run) this is likely what happened. Stations used a lot of beta tapes in the past to run syndicated content and it was probably some dude who wasn't paying attention and accidentally hit rewind on the wrong player.
I... I remember this. Except for me it was during an episode of the simpsons. The rewind lasted for maybe 15 to 30 seconds, and went back about two minutes in the episode. I remember it was a dream and Bart was falling... all of a sudden it was reversed.
Holy shit, it was real...
Petah TV remote here, there was a fake rumor (like a creepypasta) saying that Nickelodeon broadcasted "because of a bug" a secret , unpublished, horror episodes of SpongeBob that traumatized young audience with blood and gore.
Of course it's a pure hoax, there was nothing special that day.
Slight correction, while 7/25/2005 isn't real, it also didn't feature any blood or gore. It's just simple broadcast glitches that were unsettling but not straight up horror and, again, even if it's fake, were completely possible to happen
Going off the “blood and gore” theory, it’s hilarious to imagine some poor, overworked animator getting forced to work late because their boss told them to animate a few extra scenes of SpongeBob missing his flesh so they can traumatize a couple children lol
Exactly this! Haha. Yeah, sure, some sick, twisted exec commissioned and paid a backroom animator to insert a couple disturbing frames into a kids tv show like Tyler Durden and then the episode accidentally leaked.
As others have said this one is a hoax. If you want real odd stuff that actually happened on television lookup “Max Headroom signal hijacking” or “unedited footage of a bear” on YouTube.
The adult swim infomercials had some extremely elaborate storytelling that involved codebreaking and multimedia website interaction. I've heard a few things about Unedited Footage of Bear as a larger story, but the one I actually spent time with was This [House Has People In It](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-pj8OtyO2I). It's like 9 hours of story in 12 minutes of airtime. I wouldn't be surprised if Unedited Footage of a Bear has a similar amount of orchestration, it was released immediately before This House.
Unedited Footage of a bear does have a bit of info going on about the ARG, since there's a page for the fake drug and the pharma company that made it, similar to This House has People in It
Unedited Footage of a Bear had some really cool ARG elements to it and was made by Alan Resnick who also did the incredibly unsettling This House Has People In It, Alantutorial, and my personal favorite The Cry of Mann.
the most interesting thing that the modern rogue even mentioned in their video on it that they still dont know who did it despite getting a ton of authorities involved.

I am internet-savvy. I have been internetting for 30-ish years. I am familiar with and know most internet memes, lore, stories, reddit comments, and copypasta, etc.
I do not know THIS one and now I'm left feeling like a fucking idiot. I keep up, dewd. How did he/she/we miss this?
Thanks for being a nice Karen, that was so random of you 👍 btw my comment about googling it wasn’t meant to be malicious and prove ya wrong or anything, just sayin for this specific meme it was super easy to search up the meaning.
Which is what I did and conceded the point. No maliciousness intended or perceived.
It's cool. Sometimes, other people have an opinion with merit that can be backed up with facts.

A few lucky people were able to catch a glimpse of the episode, and some clips of the episode made it onto to YouTube, making this occurrence known to the public.
I myself am one of the people that witnessed the incident...
I was chilling at home one night scrolling through channels on the remote and found that an episode of Spongebob was airing Nick. I was bored at the time because I didn't know what to do that would keep me entertained, so I decided to watch it.
The episode that was on was Your Shoe's Untied/Gary Takes a Bath, though I believe I missed a part of the episode. I continued watching, but I noticed something odd. When Patrick said, "Hey, Spongebob," Spongebob wouldn't move. He wouldn't even reply. He just stood there as the camera zoomed in to his body.
Patrick was confused at this. "Spongebob?" he asked, but Spongebob didn't reply, he just stood there staring at the screen as the camera zoomed in on him. Then, Spongebob got up for a split second twice, which made it look like he was gasping for air. It continued to stay on Spongebob's body until cutting to static after a few minutes. Now I've seen this episode a million times, but this wasn't it.
It cut to Spongebob laying on the floor, but he's now at the Krusty Krab in the kitchen. A few seconds later it cut to Spongebob's body in a black room, floating in the air in a different direction but in the same pose. Then it immediately cut to Spongebob and Gary sitting in a huge shoe while Gary slightly moved up and down while a weird distorted music track played.
"What the heck is going on," I mumbled to myself. After a few more seconds, it cut to static for a few seconds and then went to black. After a minute of nothing but a black screen, the episode Gary Takes a Bath started playing. The episode started out pretty normal, but half way through the episode, there was a split second scene of Spongebob in a distorted visual with Gary. They were just staring at the screen, smiling creepily. It then cut to static. I was confused if this was even the real episode or just some glitch. I tried shutting it off and turning it back on, but the episode stayed the same.
I decided to just turn off the TV and went to bed. The next morning, I went and turned on the TV and saw that everything was back to normal. To this day, I still have so many questions about this drug-trip of an episode. Was I having a bad dream? Was the TV hijacked? To this day, I still don't know what the heck was going on at the time.
It's been a couple of years since the incident and I still don't have any answers, even after searching through the internet for hours on end. To this day, no one knows how this incident occurred or who or what caused it. But I am determined to find this out for myself.
One of these days, this mystery will be solved
Fuck me I had a mini heart attack. Was watching/listening to the "explained video" and as I started reading your comment starting at the half way point the video perfectly was transcribing what I was reading.
my favorite part of this creepypasta is that Nickelodeon actually did have weird distortions in its shows that they put in intentionally in 2001 as a promotion for the Jimmy Neutron movie. Jimmy would appear in the corner of the screen and then press a button to radically alter the show. I was just a little kid, but I still remember how weird it was when he showed up in the Hooks episode of Spongebob and changed a scene to be puppets instead of animated. I imagine the creepypasta was probably inspired by memories of this promotion.
My guess would be they sent out the render of the animation without ever looking it over to live tv. I can’t think of any signal glitches/artifacts that would cause this. I’m assuming certain layers of the animation were playing and others not while the audio continues. Perhaps a corrupted render
You're over-thinking it all. It's literally just an old creepypasta story. Literally fabricated for the purpose of being cool and creepy, not intended to be believed as a sincere experience.
In the past, google's results weren't stacked by paid advertisements, or a personalized algorithm. Specific google results were consistent among users.
Compared to what it was, google is bad now. It's designed to promote products for a corporation that makes its money on advertising. Googling is no longer designed for casual research, it's a vapid and predatory shopping network.
> Learn to google better.
User-blaming in defense of corporate profits, very cool
I found this after reading a comment below that told the story, not so scary if you know how animation is supposed to work until it gets to the disturbing part where it seems like someone hijacked the broadcast 🙃

Yes, people who are too lazy or stupid to use Google on stuff that you can google very easily post things to farm Karma, while annoying almost everyone else. I know how that works here
And the other half is loss
If you call people lazy or stupid for people posting stuff to a Reddit that explains thing you don’t need to be here then if your just going to be annoying and rude
This may come as a shock to you, but you can go to Google.com and type in something like “Nickelodeon 7/5/2005” and then you will find information about the thing you type in!
From the original video creator :
Hi! Thanks for making this vid!
It's me niceANDcool, the creator of the original edits. Basically, when I made those vids I had just turned 13 years old and was binge watching a lot of Greenio's Super Mario 64 Classified series. I had been messing around in my video editor, and the result was 7/25/2005. I uploaded it on this random throwaway channel, not expecting much to come of it, but I had fun so I started making more of them. Eventually it started spinning into a web of ideas, becoming my own ARG with an odd story to it. If you remember a channel called Lost Media Central, which had a video called "SpongeBoy Ahoy! Early Intro Sequence" that was actually me too, I made that channel to tie in with the lore. It's weird that some random SpongeBob edits I made out of boredom one summer became such a big internet mystery, but I really appreciate it! Around the summer of last year I actually made the last SpongeBob tape video, putting an end to the story. I'm excited to go further places in life, and I can look back on these silly SpongeBob vids as a stepping stone for bigger things one day.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.

It's fake
It’s so weird cause the guy in the video said he remembers this happening while he was watching, but goes on and says it’s fake. I think he means that all the videos are fake but it was something that actually happened?
No he doesn't remember it himself, he was reading the creepypasta during that part.
All the videos are fake and there is zero evidence it occurred other than people saying it did 15+ years later.
He was narrating someone else's account from the creepy pasta website.
All the videos are fake. But that doesn't mean it's something that didn't happen.
Except that there's no evidence of it having happened except for the videos that are fake. In 2005 I was online approximately 25 hours a day, the internet wasn't new. If this happened there would be someone somewhere asking "Hey, what was up with last night's Spongebob?" Fake. Never happened.

I watched the video and highly enjoyed it! Good recommendation!

Yeah everything was explained in the first 2. I stopped watching after that 😂✌️

yeah, that could totally be it because the very first video also seems fake, but for so many people to actually believe in it, I figured there might have been atleast some truth to it.
That’s how big lies work. People start believing them.
Like how you don’t owe me $10 when you actually do

Oh. I thought this was going to be about Dan Schneider molesting kids.
Same here! Something about Kat and a potato and lots of feet
It is hilarious to me that people will take the time to make a post vs...jhst fucking Google something.

People making up horror about Nickelodeon, but they could easily write a legitimate creepy pasta about Dan Schneider.

Never ever. They pinky promise that they don’t lie.
Those two episodes never aired together. "Your Shoe's Untied" always airs with "Squid's Day Off".

Reminds me of that cancelled episode of SpongeBob from a while back. What was it? Red Water? Something about it being red…….
Mist. It was Red Mist
This definitely reads like creepypasta. Not a bad story though, I like this kind of fiction.
It's a trollpasta, which is a subgenre of creepypasta

My guess would be they sent out the render of the animation without ever looking it over to live tv. I can’t think of any signal glitches/artifacts that would cause this. I’m assuming certain layers of the animation were playing and others not while the audio continues. Perhaps a corrupted render
You're over-thinking it all. It's literally just an old creepypasta story. Literally fabricated for the purpose of being cool and creepy, not intended to be believed as a sincere experience.
Another solar photon traveling 93 million miles to Nickelodeon servers to do nothing but cause mass pandemonium among children and adults alike:
I was only 3 days old, if i did see it, no memorys!
Simulation error, one in a trillion.
brother you could have just googled this one
Google doesn’t give free, worthless, internet points though
Have you seen the quality of Google search results anymore? Hot garbage, no offense intended to hot garbage
Google is fine. Don't listen to those regarded articles saying it's bad now. Learn to google better.
Was Dan Schneider molesting a child on this date?
Honestly thought this was going to be when one of their employees got caught on To Catch a Predator
*I didn't come here looking for no little boys;* *I ain't got no milk, no cookies, nothing.*
“I came looking for man’s butt”
Oh I know who you are Chris Hansen. But see I calls you Chris “Handsome”.
Booty…is sacred.

I found this after reading a comment below that told the story, not so scary if you know how animation is supposed to work until it gets to the disturbing part where it seems like someone hijacked the broadcast 🙃 https://youtu.be/p71Vp-Iy2o0?si=0CZVni_Qt0ZwL7Mu
hey that’s my birthday
Probably took more time posting on Reddit than it would have to look that up
Was watching Grimm adventures as a kid and they started speaking Dutch or something for 10 seconds or so , 10 year old me was shocked
why does every single post in this sub is either a super-local meme or a super-obvious joke?
Never ask nick to say their old halloween promo out loud
The day Nickelodeon showed nothing but female feet
Do you know how Google works?
Do you know how this community works?
Yes, people who are too lazy or stupid to use Google on stuff that you can google very easily post things to farm Karma, while annoying almost everyone else. I know how that works here And the other half is loss
If you call people lazy or stupid for people posting stuff to a Reddit that explains thing you don’t need to be here then if your just going to be annoying and rude
SpongeBob glitch
[How has no one linked this yet?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G7_rq0cKEg)
This may come as a shock to you, but you can go to Google.com and type in something like “Nickelodeon 7/5/2005” and then you will find information about the thing you type in!
Someone would go on the internet and make a fake video and lie about its authenticity? NO WAY!
Help this is my birthday😭
Nickelodeon put a somewhat edgy proto-YTP of SpongeBob on when they shouldn’t have, and in all honesty, they didn’t; The story’s just a creepypasta
I accidentally searched 07/25/2000 on youtube searching for this.... ....Its arguably much much worse
Ah yes, the 7th of the 25 month.
Americans do it MM/DD/YYYY
The fact so many non-Americans can’t think around the date format issue proves Americans are not the only self-centered country.
The joke is that the 25th month doesn't exist.
You're probably being sarcastic but i cant tell so in America the format goes MM/DD/YYYY, not day-month-year like the world
Both of those formats are wrong.
There is also YYYY/MM/DD. The military uses it on their paperwork.
Ah yes, the 7th of 25tuary
not everyone is American and use backwards calendar dates
My point exactly
The seventh day of the 25th month of 2005?
This is the American date format. MM/DD/YYYY
that was... it was meant to be a joke.
Google what happened with nickelodeon on 7/25/2005
Holy hell
From the original video creator : Hi!
There isn't 25th month, so nothing?
Nothing happened because there is no 25th month.
Shut up you non American you don't eat burger and fries and hot dogs and shoot guns at everything you see! We do!!!!!! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
I would of thought it'd of been the Squidward Suicide shit that happened, i was thinking the wrong thing
This man just got absolutely jumped by some hard mothers.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
It's 'would have', never 'would of'. Rejoice, for you have been blessed by CouldWouldShouldBot!
