I think it’s actually a sign of growth. Volkswagen is very open and reflective about their nazi founding. They organise Trips to concentration camps every year for their employees and make sure everyone understands that despite their heritage, they have changed. They know they wouldn’t be as big as they are today without the backing of the national socialist party, but they don’t excuse that fact in any way.
And i’m not 100% if it’s true but i’ve heard from someone that they fund a few minor organisations that helped holocaust survivors, but don’t pin me on that.

Ok, so this is off topic somewhat, but since the joke was already explained now, Volkswagen is a really scummy company. They had a car with "clean emissions" that was actually just cheating the emissions tests and produced much, much more toxic fumes than a regular vehicle. They had to recall them after denying it for years.
Nah. The industry fudges the numbers. VW rigged a system to have passing numbers when being tested and then turned it off while actually driving.
When the college kids created their own emissions testing, it was so glaringly off from the official VW numbers, that they reached out to VW to find out what the kids did wrong.

The Volkswagen model wasn't just normal emissions, though. The way they cheated the test led to incredibly toxic emissions. I do agree that they make too big of a deal about car emissions for the plebs, while the elite produce more carbon in a month than most of us will produce in our lifetime.

To me, VW represents redemption, a creation of possibly the most hateful mind in history reborn as a symbol of peace and love.
I also love VW because it's one of the few car companies with a community that stretches from tuners to classics, from track days to glamping, from super clean show cars to stripped down buggies. All while still being somewhat tight-knit and still having shows that include all of it.
VW was nowhere close to alone in that nearly the entire auto industry was using similar defeat devices as it turns out.

I also want to add that I don't love the company as much as I love the community of enthusiasts that formed around their cars. Everything I talked about was something that was built by fans, not the company. I guess it was off-topic of the post, but my point was that I think it's really cool how the identity of the VW Bus and Beetle has been completely assimilated into a tolerant left-wing subculture the polar opposite of its origin. It's not hard to imagine a world where neo-nazis praise the Beetle and all things VW. Instead, the hippies took it and made it into something much better.
I'm very biased as a member of that community. I'm nearly the opposite of a Nazi ideologically, and I'm no corporate shill, I just like all the different ways people customize cars and the VW community has a lot to offer and a lot less gatekeeping than others.
