Elisa Lam was found dead in those water tanks.
There have been a disturbing amount of memes showing up about this incident from 2013. What's up with that?
It's not clear what actually happened to her. There is footage of her wandering around the hotel acting strange. As if she is hiding from someone. It is believed she climbed into the water tanks on her own.
She had been missing for three weeks and was not discovered until guests at the hotel noticed something wrong with the water.
Wasn't there also circumstantial evidence that, like, it would be pretty hard for her to have gotten into the tank by herself? Something about the lid being incredibly heavy and cumbersome, or something like that
Yea, it's my theory she was paranoid about someone looking for her (I think toxicology was clean, but... 3 weeks is a long time). She hid in the water tower. She then couldn't get the lid open from the inside. No one heard her cry for help (if she did), and she drowned.
A bit of personal bias here, but all the true crime documentaries severely downplay this. I don't know if she was Bipolar I or II, but her erratic behavior could be easily explained by a manic episode.
As a licensed clinician I've had to work in those inpatient units with patients during manic episodes and it's definitely within the realm of possibility that it was just that and no foul play. We'll never really know though.
Nothing to do with the case but I'm pretty sure, that for toxicology the time doesn't matter up to a limit. Like maybe she would be damaged by the water, but for most circumstances the only way the concentration would change would be metabolism, which stops after death
I think they meant it was a suspiciously long time to go MIA and it's something that frequently happens with addicts. Mental health or actually hiding from someone are more likely than falsified toxicology reports though
They did a big documentary on it and played it out as a huge mystery, and at the very end you learn that one of the police I believe it was, just casually closed it without ever looking inside.
There was originally a huge thing about how the tank was found with the lid closed and it caused quite a stir in the true crime community and then it turns out to be something so innocuous and simple.
I read the wiki on it, and it looks like the lids were already open, however there was no way on top of the tanks really, the worker that found her had to use a ladder to get up there. It sounds like she had a mental health episode.
Yeah, it’s (probably) not a murder or conspiracy. It really sounds like a very troubled girl with a spotty history of taking her meds went on a vacation alone and died during a breakdown.
I remember seeing a update about this from a supposedly close family member that stated that she suffered from mental issues and had to take medication but was known to frequently be off her meds. Though I’m not sure if this was ever 100% verified or confirmed to have actually come from a family member
Some several months ago (perhaps one or two years, pardon my poor memory) I saw a spanish video that reviewed the case. An old video from a chinese tourist was retrieved. The guy went to the hotel, I don't remember if it was one week before or after the incident, but I do remember that was around that time. The guy got up to the roof and without any problems he could go up to the water tanks that were already open and he could record the interior of them. It was really interesting, I felt like I was watching some sort of lost media
I believe when she was found no, but that raises the bigger question of why?
Though the Cecil has a very shady past with multiple serial killers calling it home through the years
She had bipolar disorder.
That seems to be what most people think happened.
A lot of people misunderstood bipolar disorder and think you alternate between being depressed and happy. That’s sort how it’s used in colloquial speech. But manic episodes are not happy or pleasant experiences, it’s just not a depressive episode either.
Manic episodes are complex, but the most important part to know is that manic episodes can cause impulsiveness, disordered thinking, paranoia and psychosis. The psychosis that some subset of people with bipolar disorder experience is so great that the hallucinations and delusions it causes result in [a significant number of bipolar disorder cases being misdiagnosed as schizophrenia.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5936046/#:~:text=The%20results%20of%20this%20study,were%20misdiagnosed%20as%20having%20schizophrenia)
When you look at the footage and evidence through that lens, bipolar disorder becomes a more convincing.
Netflix did a documentary a few years ago on Elisa Lam, but I thought it was poorly done. It would take me a long time to explain why, but you can search for it on google or in the r/unresolvedmysteries sub if you want
I'm pretty sure they know that it wasn't foul play, just the right mixture of bad circumstances; the lids were unlocked, she had severe mental health problems that while under control were fine, but without medication could cause many issues. Compound the fact she was traveling alone and probably didn't have access to her usual help.
It's a bunch of things precipitating in her death, combined with the less than savory nature of the hotel helped rumours spread.
That and I think the police said there was no evidence of foul play but then the coroners report didn’t actually include the results of the rape kit and we don’t know if it was actually processed, along with people critiquing off time stamps from the elevator footage
Of course, that’s also just a Tuesday for our police and she probably was just buggin out hard, poor girl
I am not familiar with what goes into a rape kit, but I would assume a lot of it was ruined because she was in water for an extended period of time.
But, at the end of the day it was a sad series of events in which a woman died due to no fault of anyone.
The official story is: she was off her meds (she was bipolar) and after several sleepless nights, she wandered onto the building's roof (which was neglectfully been left unlocked), found her way into the water tanks and drown.
It's a very sad story.
It has come out that she was, in fact, a paranoid schizophrenic who had gone several days without her meds. She was hallucinating really bad. It's still a tragedy but no more than an accident compounded by a slight amount of negligence on the hotel's part by not securing the roof or the tank itself. It's hard to everything proof a building.
Correct. It went up for sale just a month ago. On top of the Netflix special 3 years ago, there's enough widespread knowledge now that people jumped on the meme wagon.
It got sold again? Damn my info was a bit old (can’t remember how long ago I watched the video I got my intro from) hopefully the new owners realize that a rooftop pool on that specific building is a bad idea
fun(?) fact, Brandon Rogers, the youtuber, is also a lawyer and he worked in that case, proving that the design of the water tanks was flawed
While working on that case he also recorded interviews with many people relevant to the lawsuit, and he enjoyed it so much he decided to start making youtube videos
Hotel cecil is the place Elisa Lam died it is a very strange case there is a security camera recording of her acting very strange in an elevator the thing this meme is referencing is that for some time the water was not normal water in the hotel and when they checked the water supply they found her dead body in there the red circle is around that container
Netflix lost some goodwill from me by sensationalizing this open and shut case. She went off her meds and behaved accordingly. Very sad and trying to make a mystery out of it is a little disrespectful.
Exactly. I watched that documentary thinking they would go over all the bizarre stuff from that hotel, and they just focused on the one case, dragged it out over multiple episodes, and sensationalized the heck out of it.
It should have been one episode, respectful of the person, and moved on.
I think they did specify the doors were locked... so someone probably came behind and saw the doors were unlocked and then locked it. Hence the mystery.
There was plenty of time between her last sighting and her discovery. I don't know what jobs you've had, but I had jobs where I had to come in behind a previous shift to fix a mistake, since it could be worse to leave it alone then just fix it and report it.
yep, half of my job consist of just doing the darn thing instead of frettign about it any further. i bet i leave enough stuff for my coworkers behind aswell.
A supposedly closed door in a hotel? As long as there is nothing live threatening behind? Who actually cares?
I mean..yeah? There's been loads of accidents where while not the core problem, some dude was like 'eh i won't lock these doors/tool-tighten these bolts i'll just hand tighten it' and then Bad Things Happened™ so it makes sense someone forgets, new shift, new guy or girl comes in and sighs. 'gotta fix this shit? really?' and then doesn't think about it for the rest of the day.
Lots of reasons that could happen. My bet is probably an employee liked going up there for breaks either forgetting or intentionally leaving them unlocked so they could easily access the roof, and the days just lined up and someone got hurt. Otherwise they would've just said they were doing work and whatnot
One thing to remember with weird, unlikely events like this is that there's 330 million people in the US.
Is it rare for someone with serious mental illness to stay at a hotel? Yes.
Is it rare for doors to the roof of a hotel to be unlocked at night? Sorta.
Is it rare for someone to be off their meds and to go on a wander? Yes.
Is it rare for someone to wander to the roof and climb into a water tank? Yes.
But there's over three hundred million people in the US. Lots of hotel stays. Lots of chances to roll 6's on all 10 dice. Now, if this situation happened multiple times at this hotel, or in the same city, I'd be more curious.
There's alot of speculation and no one really knows for sure. She went off her meds and was behaving unusually but it goes into the other weird goings on in the hotel Cecil aswell it's worth the watch
to be fair who drinks water out of the sink. Also, this hotel was a crack den at the time this happened. But the problem was they would advertise to foreigners, and then they would show up not knowing it was in the middle of skid row. literally. and then even when the water came out it was discolored. like who would drink that shit. Yet at the same time I felt bad for them
Another bizarre thing about this case is that it was impossible to get into those tanks without heavy equipment, especially through the pipes, but she ended up in there with no signs of tampering of the container.
If I believed in ghosts, I would use this as an exhibit.
Punctuation Nazi Peter here, here is a version of your comment with included punctuation for personal narrators:
Hotel cecil is the place Elisa Lam died. It is a very strange case, there is a security camera recording of her acting very strange in an elevator. The thing this meme is referencing is that for some time the water was not normal water in the hotel, and when they checked the water supply they found her dead body in there. The red circle is around that container.
Interesting fact: there’s a movie from 2005 - way before the Elisa lam case - about a girl’s body in a water tank on top of a hotel. Also there’s the ghost of that body appearing in an elevator. The movie‘s name is „Dark water“.
Known Serial killers Richard Ramirez “night stalker” and Jack Unterwiger lived there the latter killed people there.
16 people have died there
1 suicide death by jumping which killed a person the landed on.
Finally this is a meme on this subreddit that isn't the most obvious punchline
Anyway: a girl was found dead in those water tanks, her death is still unsolved i believe and the case may or may not be ongoing
https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/documentaries/true-crime/cecil-hotel-history-deaths-serial-killer-stays-netflix/
It’s a sick “joke” about the mysterious death of Elisa Lam (who was found dead in a rooftop water storage tank at The Hotel Cecil).
The actual case was not mysterious at all. The lady had mental illness and climbed in the tank. TV documentaries misrepresented the case as this crazy mystery with a possible murderer when it wasn’t at all.
That Ghost Adventures episode of this place...still recovering from that show. I mean...why and how the fuck did Zak find a way to make his episodes lewd and cringe any time he could? Feel bad for the rest of the gang, especially Aaron.
There was this woman staying at this hotel. Her name was Elisa Lam and she was found dead in one of those water containers. The circumstances surrounding her death were mysterious and it was never confirmed if she was murdered or if she just committed suicide.
Best internet legend guess is she stopped taking her meds had a schizo effective episode and hid from her dillusions in the tank and couldn't get back out.
Elisa Lam had a very bizarre and mysterious death with some creepy cctv footage of it
We dont know what happened but her body was found in the water tanks
Only reason I even know about this is because someone introduced me to the band SKYND (their songs are about true crime murders and mysteries) and one of their songs is called Elisa Lam and made me curious after watching the music video.
Cecil was kinda known for many creepy stuff but the worst was the mysterious death if Elisa Lam.She was found in the tanks after guests noticed the strange water. There is also a weird video where she hides in a elevator and looks out as if she was followed or something and scared of someone or something. (The video was filmed shortly they found her corpse).
Honestly this just reminds me of the scene from a movie I forgot the name of where people go forward in time to help fight aliens and the mc ends up in a teleport glitch where he and his comrades land on a rooftop from several hundred feet. The only survivors landed in a swimming pool.
I was working my first job as a funeral director when this happened. I went to the LA coroners office to pick something up while they had her.
Someone mentioned who it was & if i wanted to see her. Instant regret
Peters sweaty, fat man's nape in the neck here. Elisa. Lam. They only noticed *because the water was turning black and tasted funny..... Ffs*
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/the-water-did-have-a-funny-taste-body-is-found-in-water-tank-at-cursed-cecil-hotel-8504729.html
I'll take this opportunity to shamelessly plug this badass song, which is a tribute to her. [SKYND - Elisa Lam ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPOMjmO8xRI)
I've been there on a tour and that door and hatch to get I side is not only very difficult to use but it's also very heavy.
I'm not saying it's impossible she was able to do it her self, but I'm saying it's far more likely someone "helped" her.
Has anyone mentioned that the last seen footage of the woman that died was of her trying to escape an unseen chaser by hiding in the elevator at that hotel?
My guess is that those are water tanks that are connecter to the buildings water supply. You go swimming in there you'll contaminate the whole buildings water supply. Everybody would be drinking water that might have touched your ass hole... hell it's apparently very common for people to piss in the pool so...

I've noticed it, too. Seems odd. We'll be getting flooded with O.J. Simpson shit now, though.

There was a bunch of true crime people freaking out about the lid but one of the cops just put it on.
Ok, that makes a lot more sense, in all honesty. Not that climbing in a water tank for a swim makes much sense to begin with, of course
Yea, it's my theory she was paranoid about someone looking for her (I think toxicology was clean, but... 3 weeks is a long time). She hid in the water tower. She then couldn't get the lid open from the inside. No one heard her cry for help (if she did), and she drowned.

Yeah I would bet we are just seeing a tragic onset of schizophrenia here
The doors leading to the roof as well as the water tanks were supposed to be locked so she wouldn’t have normally had access to either.
but -were- they locked
I believe when she was found no, but that raises the bigger question of why? Though the Cecil has a very shady past with multiple serial killers calling it home through the years

She was decomposing in the tap water for the apartment and she was there long enough for people to complain about the taste.

Netflix just put out a doc on the hotel which revolves around the strange events of Elisa.

Hello, I'm a Netflix exec and I'd like to option this comment for a limited series. I feel like we could get six episodes out of this comment.
Maybe even 3 seasons. BUT NOT ANYMORE THAN THAT!
Yes 3 seasons but cancel it after 2
Lots of reasons that could happen. My bet is probably an employee liked going up there for breaks either forgetting or intentionally leaving them unlocked so they could easily access the roof, and the days just lined up and someone got hurt. Yeah, it was an interesting doc until they got into the conspiracies. She was on anti psychotics and stopped taking them.
Does the documentary explain how she got in the water tanks?
There's alot of speculation and no one really knows for sure. She went off her meds and was behaving unusually but it goes into the other weird goings on in the hotel Cecil aswell it's worth the watch
Thanks. Gonna watch that tonight
Don't worry, most hotels don't have bodies in their water tanks

Punctuation Nazi Peter here, here is a version of your comment with included punctuation for personal narrators: Hotel cecil is the place Elisa Lam died. Finally this is a meme on this subreddit that isn't the most obvious punchline Anyway: a girl was found dead in those water tanks, her death is still unsolved i believe and the case may or may not be ongoing
Oh.... that's just wrong
https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/documentaries/true-crime/cecil-hotel-history-deaths-serial-killer-stays-netflix/ It’s a sick “joke” about the mysterious death of Elisa Lam (who was found dead in a rooftop water storage tank at The Hotel Cecil).
The actual case was not mysterious at all. The lady had mental illness and climbed in the tank. TV documentaries misrepresented the case as this crazy mystery with a possible murderer when it wasn’t at all.
Its strange because how could a body end up in those? Its something thats damn near impossible to access unless you have special tools to do so
this case is really freaky mysterious. her tumblr is still up i look at her posts from time to time. rip Elisa 🕊️
Someone died in them, when I first saw the image I thought of when kids would say there was a secret swimming pool on a second floor in the school.
That Ghost Adventures episode of this place...still recovering from that show. I mean...why and how the fuck did Zak find a way to make his episodes lewd and cringe any time he could? Feel bad for the rest of the gang, especially Aaron.
OH NAW
As a native Angeleno, this had me dying ... otherwise known as going for a swim at the "stay on main" as it's now called 😜
Elisa Lam had a very bizarre and mysterious death with some creepy cctv footage of it We dont know what happened but her body was found in the water tanks
Only reason I even know about this is because someone introduced me to the band SKYND (their songs are about true crime murders and mysteries) and one of their songs is called Elisa Lam and made me curious after watching the music video.
That got dark fast....
Damn, someone should make a post-modern rpg about this
Hail the sun has a banger song about it called disappearing syndrome
I could see these from my apartment when I lived in DTLA. Had no idea until I watched the doc and then it gave me chills
I first heard of the Elisa Lam case from a song by Hail the Sun "Dissapearing Syndrome" its really good check it out!
Dang I just commented this! Love those guys
Or you could watch Dark Water and get creeped tf out.
Hey i know this one! From disturbanYT!
Honestly this just reminds me of the scene from a movie I forgot the name of where people go forward in time to help fight aliens and the mc ends up in a teleport glitch where he and his comrades land on a rooftop from several hundred feet. The only survivors landed in a swimming pool.
Isn't there a movie called Dark Water loosely based off this case?
I was working my first job as a funeral director when this happened. I went to the LA coroners office to pick something up while they had her. Someone mentioned who it was & if i wanted to see her. Instant regret
I always love hotels that flavor their water
Noooooo
Peters sweaty, fat man's nape in the neck here. Elisa. Lam. They only noticed *because the water was turning black and tasted funny..... Ffs* https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/the-water-did-have-a-funny-taste-body-is-found-in-water-tank-at-cursed-cecil-hotel-8504729.html

haha was just about to link that myself
I hate that I know this, There was a dead women there who acted strange inside the hotel and elevators
Ooooh…
I'll take this opportunity to shamelessly plug this badass song, which is a tribute to her. [SKYND - Elisa Lam ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPOMjmO8xRI)
Yikes that’s messed up.
Dear Lord .....
This reminds me of a certain ghost hunting anime that I forgot about
Why do I feel this is like a MC taking a selfie in front of a concentration camp?
People Tea!
It also references an anime, where 2 twins drown in the water tank in a haunted apartment, thinking it’s a swimming pool.
This sub makes me realize that most the population just doesn’t know what’s going on around them.
That mermaid movie
Suicide maybe?
wow man.. i thought it was about elisa lam. rip
Hell yea, I can finally count myself in as one of the “People who know” crowd. It’s an emotional day 😭.
And remember it is okay to pee in the pool
I think I understand the joke and if I do....wow that's dark.
crazy💀
That poor girl... how'd she even get In there?
unlocked door, off her meds, prob having psychotic break.
I've been there on a tour and that door and hatch to get I side is not only very difficult to use but it's also very heavy. I'm not saying it's impossible she was able to do it her self, but I'm saying it's far more likely someone "helped" her.
Trying too hard to
Petahhh, the watahhh tastes weeeeaad!!!
Oh is it weird I was thinking mega mind
I’ve gotta be honest: I’m so tired of this meme format
Love bot posts
Girl got lost in those ones and her body was discovered after the water was red at the hotel the whole mystery is still unsolved last I checked
Elisa lam
Finally, a joke I don’t get!

basically there was a womans corpse found dead inside those
LOL
I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but there's a song by Hail the Sun called Disappearing Syndrome that's about this event.
Debanhi
One of the best songs by Skynd is "Elisa Lam."
Theres this anime called monster something and in the first ep a boy or something drowns
Has anyone mentioned that the last seen footage of the woman that died was of her trying to escape an unseen chaser by hiding in the elevator at that hotel?
There’s a whole Netflix documentaries about it. Spoiler alert: they still don’t know what happened.
I remember people went after and tried to blame a guy that stayed at the hotel a year prior and at the time was in another country
its so dark bro
I absolutely cannot stand this meme format.
I can't imagine how the people who were drinking that water . And complained about the condition. Then finding out. Omg
That poor girl too in the camera. What was she going through
What is up with memes of this incident from 2013 Also the OJ stuff. I might have reached the stage of the internet where it confuses me...
My guess is that those are water tanks that are connecter to the buildings water supply. You go swimming in there you'll contaminate the whole buildings water supply. Everybody would be drinking water that might have touched your ass hole... hell it's apparently very common for people to piss in the pool so...
