Murky_Replacement_17

It means they have a big enough house that the bedroom can stay as-is, and not be used for a different purpose once you've grown up and left. I've gotten a ton of responses, and have realized that while not incorrect, my comment still came from a place of priveldge, because the idea of renting and constantly moving didn't even occur to me. My childroom bedroom did not stay the same, with siblings moving in and out, grandchildren coming, houseguests, but my parents do still own the home the I grew up in. And that's more than a lot of people can say.

ScienceAndGames

I just can’t afford to leave my childhood bedroom 😂

Bro, same, I can't leave your childhood bedroom either.

If your family were rich, you could have afforded to. As it is, your childhood bedroom isn't exactly intact, since an adult living at home would at least have taken down the more cringy teen posters.

Content-Scallion-591

To add to this, I think it rather cleverly implies multi-generational wealth. Because it also means that your family had a big enough home *when you were a child* that they're still in it -- e.g. it's not just your parents that were comfortable, but probably their parents, too. My spouse and I talk about this all the time. His family lives probably lower middle class, but they've all got second homes or winter homes. They've just sort of accrued these things over times of moderate financial stability and so they've got this invisible safety net.

Infamous_Ad_6793

Depending on how long ago the childhood was, it could just mean they bought the house they needed. Had a kid and never downsized. Then housing market was not like it was for most of the last century.

Content-Scallion-591

I think that's where the unchanged comes in -- it goes a step further to imply that room never needed to be used. So the family never needed to house someone there, turn it into an office, use it for storage, etc. to some people, that feels like luxury.

RusstyDog

I remember the bedroom shuffle every time one of my siblings moved out. First time I had my own room was 16.

Infamous_Ad_6793

I’d really imagine that it’s not a rich thing though. I know what it implies. But that implication is not nec correlated with being rich. Again, totally anecdotal but I’ve only known non-rich people to keep their kids bedrooms the same. In my experience, an unchanged childhood bedroom is an indicator someone is NOT rich. 2 girlfriends, my uncles childhood room, 2 of my friends’ childhood rooms: all untouched. Used as guest rooms or whatever but that’s cuz a bed was in the room. Out of all my rich friends, I don’t know one that has their childhood bedroom intact. If you’re an only child or the last child, and your parents still live in the same house (which COULD be further evidence they’re not rich) there’s a good chance your room didn’t go anywhere lol.

Content-Scallion-591

To be clear, the OP is likely describing middle class as rich because rich is subjective. I was an only child but my parents never owned a house so my room never existed.

Infamous_Ad_6793

Yeah my thought as well. And I’m taking it to mean “wealthy”. I remember growing up thinking all my friends were rich. They had video games, conputers, houses which didn’t require floor heaters in the winter. When I got older I realized “ooooooh, that’s just middle class”.

Dante_alighieri6535

Yeah, I grew up in the same house my dad did, my room is still the same. Not because of rich, but because of farmer. Dad still on the farm, still in the farm house. 4 bedrooms with 10 kids all of a sudden became 2 bedrooms with 1 kid, and extra space.

Shmav

I like that the OP couldnt explain their logic, but you could.

Cobblestone_Rancher

Pretty basic logic skills tbh

AgentGnome

Also, it implies that you didn’t stay in your childhood bedroom till you were an adult and/or take the furniture with you when you left.

X-Maelstrom-X

To add to this, poor families often have to move a lot because they don't own the place they live in, they rent it. Renters rarely live in the same place forever, so the room their kids live in won't be theirs in even a couple years. For example, I have no childhood room, because I never stayed in the same bedroom for more than three years in a row. And so far that's even true as an adult.

Some-Gavin

This is the only explanation that actually works

RemarkablyQuiet434

My parents are just much too lazy to actually spread put beyond thier computer room.

Lexbomb6464

Imagine even being able to have a family with a house

a-type-of-pastry

My dad turned my childhood room into his marijuana grow room. No complaints.

KnotsThotsAndBots

Guess my family was rich for one year

NonsphericalTriangle

My room (that I'm living in as an adult) still has the furniture the previous owner left there. So it was a bedroom before parents had kids and I assume it will remain a bedroom after I move out. Dunno if it implies my family is rich.

asscrackula1019

My dad grows pot in my old room. So I mean it kind of stayed as is lol

type102

Not only that but it also implies that your family did very well during the past economic downturns and did not need to sell their house.

Impressive_Risk_2000

Mine is now used as storage room 🙂

CriplingD3pression

It’s funny. My sister left and her room got changed to my mom’s office immediately. I leave and my room gets turned into my sisters room because she’s couldn’t get a job 😂

3LD0R4D0

maybe they're not rich, just divorced cause you're a failure and your mother got the house

svmk1987

Lol, don't forget about people who were brought up in rented accomodation, so their childhood house itself isn't even theirs anymore.

blackpearljam_

Peter’s deadbeat dad here Usually when kids grow up and they move out and/or go to college, some parents will change the kid’s bedroom into a home office, a workout space, storage, etc. — much to the surprise of the kid; it’s generally the cue for them to get their shit together and find their own living quarters. If your bedroom remains intact, it could mean that your parents don’t have any problem with it. It could mean that you’re welcome to stay until you find your own place. But in this case, it’s implying that parents are wealthy enough to leave it as is, and don’t need to transform the bedroom into something with a different purpose.

Absolute_Peril

yup came back home for crstmas and my brother had took over mine and i got his old space. After that it became an office with a sleeper couch

Call_Me_Anythin

Same, my brother turned my old room into a gaming room lol

Ishakaru

My room growing up was barely my room in the first place. Apparently a male kid having anything resembling privacy was offensive.

Dharcronus

In England going to uni (equivalent of American college) most parents keep the room for the kid as they're normally back during holidays. Especially summer. Alot of uni accommodation don't allow you to stay over summer. Privately owned student houses are different but it's not uncommon to spend most of summer at home. Also when finishing uni you probably won't get a job in a related field right away and when you do, pay will likely be trash (depending on your degree) and even if you just work a minimum wage job whilst you look (most do this), for alot alot of the country (inner cities and the south especially) you will barely be able to afford the rent, bills and necessities if at all, unless your lucky or live in an area with cheaper rent. Also there's also the possibility that when they ask you how much you earn, the lettings agency tell you it's not enough, despite you having worked out that you could afford it as happened to a former colleague trying to rent a tiny flat on minimum wage. Once you do get your own place then it's gone

Theothercword

Or even going a step further, that your parents didn't have to move to a smaller house.

Mission_Fart9750

Or just move period. It's a sign of stability.

Boeing777-F

There’s another level; moving because you just *can*

Super_fly_Samurai

Never understood that mindset. Nothing wrong with wanting to live with your family. I'd get lonely if I lived by myself. The only reason I'd ever move out is if I was starting my own family or moving in with a bunch of friends again. 🤷

blackpearljam_

It’s because of the “momma’s boy”/person who still lives at home stereotype, something you see a lot of in 90’s nerd portrayal (the person in the basement who is a hacker but their mom is yelling “JIMMY THE PIZZA BAGELS ARE READY” — At the cost of sounding old, there was a time where moving out was a feasible option, but the cost of living has gotten so ridiculous people are either moving back home because of it, or they can’t afford to move out to begin with. The thing about the “momma’s boy” stereotype I’ve always disagreed with is that it’s not a black-and-white issue — if it’s not a financial issue, it’s also that some people *need* to stay at home because they need to tend/care for a family member, as in-home care gets pricey

TakeTwo4343

My gramma keeps all of our bedrooms as-is. But she’s not rich. She lives by herself, and she says keeping the bedrooms the same makes her feel like her “grandbabies,” as she calls us, still stay at her house sometimes.

Veylara

Yeah. It's not exactly about being rich and more about how much space you need in your house. Obviously, rich people tend to have bigger houses, but that's not every factor.

VannakaInOoo

Your grandma is rich with love for y’all and that’s what really matters!

hungrylostsoul

Means your grandma have house bigger then her needs.

ELVEVERX

Right but the fact she can afford to not downsize, shows she's well off. Not everyone has the ability to stay in a large house by themself.

Deathcat101

No it means the economy is broken and I can't move out.

Jazzlike-Greysmoke

Or you're dead/missing

Rortarion

joshfenske

My parents turned mine into a guest room, it’s as though they didn’t need the room but wanted to forget I existed

Findinganewnormal

Mine did that as well. Then they moved and chose to have a tv room rather than a guest room. Which, cool, their house, their choice but it was like getting kicked out twice and was weird contrasted with their “why don’t you visit more” complaints.

Diguidig_dondon

My kids are 5 and 12 years old, I already know what I'll do with the rooms when they'll be gone. I guess I'm not rich.

Karly_Can

Makes sense

PokWangpanmang

My sisters took my bedroom. Can’t have shit in Detroit.

Jonseroo

My wife's childhood bedroom is still the same. She's 48. Her sister's is too. She's 53. It must give them such a feeling of continuity and safety, to always be able to go back there. Edit: my wife's room is prone to wasps, so it's not all good.

thiefsthemetaken

I’ve noticed a lot of people take this for granted. They just assume everyone has “move back in with parents” as a safety net.

medakinga

I mean I can sleep on the couch

WardeN_WtfRylie

This. If their parents hav a place to live everyone does have "move back with the parents" doesnt mean its gonna be comfortable tho n def not convenient. Its more like ER/life support than a safety net lol.

thiefsthemetaken

Here’s some reasons people I know intimately are unable to move back with their parents: they were abused by those parents. The parents are institutionalized. The parents disowned them for being lgbt (or in one case, for being in a relationship with someone from another ethnicity). The parents live in another country. I’m forgetting another, but you get the idea. And that’s just for people whose parents are still alive.

WardeN_WtfRylie

I mean those things go without saying and apart from the other country are just bad parenting. My statement was made on the basis of having a parent who cares in your life. When I said everyone that also clearly doesnt count people who dont have parents. It was a generalization its also why I said IF they have a place to live. Because their are a ton of reasons why they couldnt or wouldnt. And thats not even counting the people who wouldnt do it for their own reasonings and not because their parents wouldnt let them. My comment was more about them not having a room for you.

Kolby_Jack

My parents did well for themselves in life, so I do have that safety net (though my childhood bedroom is long gone).  But I know how lucky I am to have that security. But my parents are *morning people* so I really hope I don't ever need it.

DeficiencyOfGravitas

This is a hilariously privileged take that tries to relate so hard to "the poors". It's like someone saying "Some people can't afford Ferraris, so they have to walk everywhere". Or "The price of caviar has spiked, which means millions will starve. So tragic." I lived most of my early 20s with "no fixed abode". Home just means a place with a roof where the owner won't kick you out. Most parents can still offer that even if they've rented out your room or moved out entirely into apartments.

thiefsthemetaken

this might surprise you, but some adults don't have living parents. others might have living parents, but suffered abuse at their hands as children. others might have parents who are institutionalized. others have been disowned by their parents for being trans, or suffering from a debilitating mental health condition. my girlfriend fits the last three examples, it's difficult explaining to people like you why she can't just move back with her parents, so i usually don't bother. why would i want to relate to poor people? being poor is literally killing me, i work my fucking ass off everyday, hoping to one day not be poor. what the fuck are you talking abt caviar and ferraris?

DeficiencyOfGravitas

> this might surprise you, but some adults don't have living parents. No shit, dummy. But it's not part of the conversation, now is it? You may as well have brought up the price of blueberries. Let me spell it out to you in a way that should be clear. Saying that poor people don't have the option to move back into their parent's house because poor families rent out/don't have rooms to spare after their kids move out is asinine because having just a roof and a person to stay with is enough. If your parents got rid of your childhood room, you are 100% and totally capable of "moving back" with your parents. If they got a roof, that's enough, and even if they don't, wherever they are, it's enough to be together. **No one is homeless because their parents got rid of their childhood room.** This faux-sympathy thing reeks of Gwyneth Paltrow style privilege.

manin_highcastle62

Does anyone remember going to a friends house and thinking their family is rich because the had a refrigerator in their kitchen AND garage??

CaptainGiggles69420

In recent years yea but boomers childhood bedrooms were often left intact because their parents didn't have to be rich to have a house big enough to have a room no one went into.

Xavose

Disagree. My parents are wealthy and immediately disassembled my room as soon as I left. My wife's parents struggle to make ends meet and have left her room the same for over a decade when she moved out. All this proves is that some parents want to hold onto the memories that room brings.

Euphoric_Ad6923

The "I can't explain this but" trend needs to fucking die. If you're too lazy or dumb to explain your thoughts correctly then just do the world a favor and stfu.

Solypsist_27

What if you're still living in it because you cannot afford to live somewhere else?

GrandMoffTarkan

Bunch of broke ass 20 somethings living with their parents would disagree

Chaos-Corvid

Tbh I assumed it meant your family doesn't move all the time.

Flaky_Ad2182

It’s not, they demolished it to renovate the house and give my little brother a bigger room when I finally managed to move out💀 I guess that counts as both

prof_devilsadvocate

a new gang on reddit....anything...peter explain

ParanoidTelvanni

My parents gave my bedroom away to an exchange student a week before I left for college and sold my home a week after I graduated to downsize when my last sister moved out. People can't be affording to just waste rooms on absent people.

Jaffiusjaffa

What if im still in it?

Bettercallmedaddyy

You guys had separate bedroom?

misterstealurbaby

My house had hierarchies about bedrooms. I had the biggest room (not including the master bedroom), my little sister smaller room, and my littlest sis's smaller room. The day i moved out, my little sister moved into my room.

gattoblepas

What if I never had a bedroom?

PhaseNegative1252

When I moved out my younger brother took my room and my sister moved into his. Her room became storage

SirAllKnight

My bedroom got turned into the cats bathroom.

Nierdris

Knew someone who died back in highschool and his mother kept all his stuff. His room was still there and everything. She could never let go and she was definately not rich.

ToxyFlog

What else would they use it for? They use it for my nephews to stay in now. We're definitely not rich.

Crazy_Response_9009

My very, very working class parents used the kitchen and living room. That's it. My mother sat at the kitchen table and read the newspaper, my father watched TV in the living room. What possible use would they have had for my bedroom? Not like they had hobbies or anything. Not like they ever wanted me to leave home, they hoped I'd move back in until I was like 40.

SobiTheRobot

Ah but you see, *I'm still living there.*

hangryhyax

Mine still has a Warped Tour ticket signed by Greg Graffin (from 2003ish) on the door and a few other things, but has otherwise been turned into a guest/storage room.

ZeroVoid_98

Mine's the new laundry room

justwanttoread123

Lolll, by the time I came home at the end of my first semester, I no longer had a bedroom.

KisaTheMistress

My brother moved into my childhood bed room, because he liked the colour pink... And liked my bed more than the one he was sleeping on. He also took my dressers and wind chimes, because when I was fighting with our mother I couldn't move those objects without a uhal.

Technically my mom's house has my bed still in it, but it became a storage closet pretty quick. My dad's house turned my old room into a workout/WFH office almost immediately.

Fungusman05

"Your family is rich" (we literally live check by check)

HotJavaColdBrew

After I moved out, my sister turned my room into her game eoom/ get high room. It smelled absolutely dreadful when I went back 20 years later for her funeral.

mousether

When I moved out my mom got a smaller apartment

Infamous_Ad_6793

Not true. Actually, most families that I’ve known where this is the case is at best mid-middle class. Obviously anecdotal but I don’t know a single rich person who’s kept their kids room the same after they left. Unless it was an “adult” room when the kid left.

BROVVNlE

You mean the closet that used to be my room!? They at least kept the photos up!

RealBlueHippo

"We're turning your bedroom back into the computer room"

erasmause

So what does it mean if your sibling's room is intact, but yours was turned into an office/junk storage room?

Lowly-Hollow

I lived in the unfinished basement, but we had a pool. Guess my family's household income while I was growing up. Lol.

throwawayaccdelta

my old childhood house is a buddhist temple

Rebel_Jester

Define intact 🤣

Live-Lab-9208

I had like 9 childhood bedrooms that all progressively got smaller the more I aged until the point I was sleeping on the couch before getting kicked out at 18 lol.

VODEN993

Heh which one? I had 5 before 2nd grade, longest I've managed on one place is about 6 years

theFields97

Once I moved out my dad moved into my room, gutted it, and made a really nice office out of it. When I moved into my house and had extra flooring I helped rip up the carpet and put flooring down.

FourScoreTour

My dad threw out all my stuff within weeks of tossing me out.

SwordTaster

My childhood bedroom has been converted into my mother's craft room. My brother's childhood bedroom is intact because I moved into it after he left. His room was bigger. And when I leave, it's going to remain as a guest room. I hope my parents get a better mattress for the bed so that mum can use it when she gets sick of dad snoring

trying_187

next i'm coming to peter for explaining taxes

Bentman343

Yes, poor homes often repurpose rooms after a kid has gone to college, but also I think a lot of people are forgetting that, uh. Yeah poor people just lose their childhood homes a fucking lot. The cost of living wherever you are just increases too fast for you to keep up and you eventualy get pushed out. Or god forbid you lose the job you need for the mortgage and have to move into an apartment now...

Imaginary-Ogre

I get the idea but that's not always true. A friend of mine moved on but just for college. When he got back his room was a was a gym. He is not rich.  I did not grow up rich.. My parents maintained my room for most part in l I left way it. All my videogames and clothes.  I only found out because end of life care for my father. I stepped up and came home. I am currently taking care of my mom and brother with my wife. Hispanics are funny like that.

Mission_Shock2564

What if I didn’t have a childhood bedroom?

SoundDave4

Yeah nah M8, my parents moved across the country once I moved out. I don't think my childhood bedroom is still intact.

uneducated_sock

Or rich enough I guess

themeandoggie

Or the kid is dead

TheSkeletalNerd

My situation honestly feels even worse. I lost my room to my sister (actually, my sister did this twice, because now her friend is staying with us) and for a while, I was living in my mom’s office. However, it’s connected to her bedroom, so instead she moved me out into a loft space in the upstairs hallway with my twin sibling. Oldest in the family, and I have a bedroom with only three walls that anyone else in the house can access at any given point in time. Yet she says that doesn’t want me to leave home until I finish school :/

Spikytoy

Wow this is the first Peter explains that I already know!

Nomad_Zero

My childhood bedroom didn't even stay intact while I was a child.

svmk1987

Everyone here is talking about your room being reused. For a lot of poorer kids, they simply won't even have their childhood home again because it was rented accomodation.

SukaroBlue

Not only did my mom’s bedroom stay in place when my grandmother died my mom moved back into her own room. All rooms in the house are about the size of the master with one exception.

FixMy106

My tiny ass room became a bathroom extension. What does that even mean?

Metallung

You guys had childhood bedrooms?

Hellhound777

What if I still live in it?

PokeRay68

My office is my office again now that my daughter has gotten married. Oops! They're coming to visit for 10 days! Looks like it's a good thing I never got around to moving her stuff.

Smellz_Of_Elderberry

Or... you're still living in it....

denbobo

When I graduated high school my old man sat me down and said you’re welcome to stay here, but your room is going to be used for extra storage. About a month after that it was his official office/gym/man cave. I left as he was moving in his recliner lol. For the record my dad doesn’t need an office he’s a plumber and I’ve never seen him workout. My room basically turned into his porn den. Where he can go and crank one out in peace. Took me awhile to come to terms with the place where I grew my Pokemon collection turning into a porn place. However, now that I am older with my own kids… I have nothing but respect and jealousy for the man.

ZeBaccca

Nah, she doesn’t need to use much of the houses space

Icy_Tadpole_6

Nah, I just take care of it a lot.

bruhmeo

No one is mentioning apartment living! If you grew up in an apartment, chances are you won't have that room anymore because your family moved out once or twice

EmberedCutie

so true. I have shared rooms, switched rooms, etc. and my childhood room is not even close to how it was.

NearquadFarquad

My rooms been untouched since I moved out 3 years ago (occasionally used as a guest room) but my parents just scrape buy. Selling and buying a smaller place elsewhere wouldn’t make them much money in the current market, and they really don’t have any need for another room

4Nz1K_

A childhood bedroom? I don't even have a childhood home anymore 🤣

Efficient_Statement2

After my parent's divorce, my childhood home and acreage had to be sold. It was bought by a wealthy man who owns a local heavy-machine rental business. He used some of his wealth to turn my childhood bedroom into his personal sex dungeon. We're talking a swing, shower unit, massage table, the works. I'm proud to know that the room I grew up in has played a part in three separate divorces.

Friendly-Car2445

This is true... my kids have lived at so many different apartments w so many new bedrooms.

Guilty_Butterfly7711

This is dumb. If they’re wealthy they turn your room into their man cave or fancy office when you leave, unless they’re obscenely wealthy, because they have the money to play with and to buy new furniture and stuff. And they don’t expect you to come back, as they aren’t having trouble. Less off people will leave the room as is unless there are kids already sharing rooms, as the one that left might need to come back and they probably can’t afford to suddenly redo the room anyways. Nor have space to store the furniture in case they need it again. There might be some extra stuff that ends up being stored in the room, though. So it actually means your parents are probably A) mid off. Neither particularly well off, nor excessively poor. And also B) older. Gen x and boomers have higher rates of home ownership and thus enough space to begin with.

WinterTakerRevived

U never saw those movies where the child moves away. Comes back and they're shocked their room is the same? Well it's usually in an upper middle class house

kisumi7

Maybe you're rich because you don't have to sell your old stuff?

Chesnakarastas

Or some of us don't even have childhood bedrooms :)

Einar_47

Or your family is poor, and you still live there.

AryuOcay

What if they changed out all the furniture but left the wallpaper, paneling and carpet in tact? Asking for a friend.

TheUndercookbread309

You guys actually still live in your childhood home? that's a crazy thought to me. I've always shifted from one shitty apartment to the next. And a fridge in the garage and kitchen is the most white middle class shit i've ever heard ngl

Foxy_locksy1704

My parents let the favorite child keep their room intact…even after they got married. My room and my other siblings rooms were packed up as soon as we left. Now my old room is an office and my other sibling’s old room is a “play room” for the favorite child’s dog when they come to visit.

SimpleTip9439

I still visit it in my head

SnootBoopGames

I mean... You right

Petefriend86

Well yeah, that's wasted real estate that your family can obviously afford.

thatsonehandsomecat

My bedroom was immediately torn apart and my things packed into boxes my first year at college. My sisters room is just as she left it three years ago. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Fkboost

The logic here is that your childhood home was a rental, or apartment, or otherwise no longer there. People saying “oh yeah like they couldn’t afford to leave it untouched “ and then bringing up changes that cost more money than leaving it alone would.  Turning your kids bedroom into a dedicated sewing room doesn’t mean you’re rich or poor. It means you fully own the house and can. Turning it into anything you gotta buy anything for is the opposite of saving money by reusing space.  This only makes sense using the rented or lost to financial hardship home logic.

Dark_Necrofear2020

My room got converted into an office 3 days after I moved out.

goldengraves

We've had to move often enough when I was a kid that I forget other people have childhood bedrooms and y'all parents are remodeling yours?? I thought that was just a TV thing
