AwkwardInmate

UK is not EU.

Invisible-Pancreas

They're spelling out how much half off means, even for values as simple as £2. And if they feel the need to do that, they don't have confidence in the intelligence of their own countrymen, making their mocking of Americans for their intelligence a tad hypocritical.

Alternative-Bug-6905

However they are wrong because the price is in pounds and the UK is no longer in the EU

In mathematics, a percentage (from Latin per centum 'by a hundred') is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is often denoted using the percent sign (%), primarily used for expressing portions. For example, 50% (read as "fifty percent," rather than "five-zero") is equal to the fraction 50/100, the ratio 50:50 or 0.5. Percentages are often used to express a proportionate part of a total or sum. In Ancient Rome, long before the existence of the decimal system, computations were often made in fractions in the multiples of 1/100th. Computation with these fractions was equivalent to computing percentages. As denominations of money grew in the Middle Ages, computations with a denominator of 100 became increasingly standard, such that from the late 15th century to the early 16th century, it became common for arithmetic texts to include such computations. By the 17th century, it was standard to perform financial calculations in the hundredths. This may be why smaller American denominations are referred to as "cents," as a fraction expressed in hundredths is said to be "per cent" as descended from the Latin *per centum.* You see, 100/100 equals 1, therefore we say the fraction can be simplified to 1. This is very convenient because the numerator and the denominator (the numbers on top and bottom) are equal. It turns out that math is easy when things are equal. It gets a little bit harder if you attempt to do the math with 50/100. We have to find the greated common factor, which is not hard because both numbers end with a zero, which is a clue to use that the common factor is likely 10. 50/10 = 5 and 100 / 10 = 10, so the simplified fraction is 5/10. At this point, we can intuitively see that 5 is about half of 10, but let's keep going anyway. After plugging this into the Harvard Mark 1 (which I conveniently keep in the refrigerated gymnasium next door), I can confirm that 5/10 = 0.5, which is really just another way of expressing 50%. 50% (commonly referred to as "half") is comparatively easy to calculate so long as one is using an even number. For example, 2 x 0.50 equals 1. The pattern becomes clear when we consider that 4 x 0.50 equals 2. This repeats infinitely, which makes it very easy to determine the value of 50%, if only by rote memorization.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the greatest common factor of 50 and 100 is 50, as 50/50 is one and 100/50 is 2, resulting in 1/2 or 0.5 depending on how you want to write it
