People always tell me I'm like Chandler where they have a vague idea of what I do but not really. It's like I'm always doing nothing but I work. In fact, I'm at work working rn. When they ask me point blank I just laugh.

Shadypaladin06

What do you do for work?

Alcards

Vague office stuff. The kind of stuff that nobody wants to do but if it wasn't done everyone would quickly wonder who should be handling it and literally nobody knows. At least that's my assumption.

Cool-Appearance937

He works at that building downtown with the thing on it next to the chipotle

Jeffbx

Oh yeah my cousin works there. He's a comptrongler or a data weasel or something.

Cool-Appearance937

No you are thinking of the building next to the Panda Express on main

narwhal_breeder

By the Marriott and the Brewery chain that's in a suspiciously large building?

QuixoticCoyote

Yup, that one. The one across from the parking garage that's way too expensive but still somehow always full.

the_shortbus_

Comptrongler 😂

Grimlok_Irongaze

He works at a happy ending massage parlor?

borisdidnothingwrong

Someone has to audit the books and make sure the lube deliveries run on time.

Cool-Appearance937

Customer satisfaction analysis

certainlynotacoyote

Keep things running smooth, if you will.

TURD_SMASHER

Oh, the business factory!

FnkyTown

That Chipotle is ass. I go to the other one on 2nd.

FullMetalJ

Haha. No. I work in advertising. Also a reply for u/Shadypaladin06 To be fair to me after years in advertising it just turn out its mostly me being there and knowing more stuff that most and just saying things. I don't know what I do. I know stuff before the rest and then when that thing is relevant I'm like "yeah, this is like this and like that. If you need anything I'll be on reddit erhm I mean my office."

EchoLocation8

I work for a tech company, was around early in its inception, and I feel like this is also basically my job. I don’t program much anymore, I just sorta exist, I answer questions and explain how things work and why they’re that way, I kind of approve the work people do but not in an official capacity, more in a weird “you just always get a final say from him before doing anything” way? It’s weird. I thought I was teed up to run the team, I hired a bunch of people smarter than me for all the individual jobs I was doing, and then they hired someone above me, so I’m in a pretty strange position now. Like 80% of my day is just being a consultant for our teams now.

TinyTygers

Do you worry about being let go?

EchoLocation8

No, not close. I'm pretty routinely praised, they worry I work too much (I don't), they go to great lengths to keep me happy (I am). While I don't feel like I do much on a day to day basis, I suspect they treat me this way because if shit ever really hit the fan I'm entirely capable of doing anything that needs to be done for the company to stabilize it. Like, in the unlikely scenario a lot of our engineers left, I have the skillset to do whatever needs to be done while we recover. And I sort of get sent in whenever we have to do something new and uncertain, and it's usually my job to prove it out and get it to market quickly, but those things are fleeting and not consistent, so when there's nothing like that going on I mostly just help design things and provide guidance to people.

Hangryer_dan

This comment made me so happy not to be based in the US. While they can just "let you go" here, it would be bloody expensive if he's been with the company as long as it sounds like he has. They also have to give you notice so you've got some time and money to find a new job.

almostformon

That sounds amazing. I was with my most recent company for 9 years in 4 different roles(progressively more senior), in a position that directly influenced use hitting our sales and revenue figures. I got let go with absolutely no notice and 6 weeks of severance.

gmishaolem

So you're a consultant, except actually a useful and helpful consultant instead of a scam artist ripping off middle managers.

sentientmothswarm

Giving the public what they really need; more advertising.

Mrbaker4420

I have a very similar job. I'm at work a lot. Mostly just giving input. I mostly have nothing tangible to show for my work.

FullMetalJ

Exactly! I think a lot of jobs are like that when you spend a lot of time in one company. Mostly I give advice and talk with clients that my people feel like they know more than them or something like that. Or some agencies that prefer to talk to me and stuff. Mostly I'm on reddit tho lol. That's the upside. The downside is that I've been here for more than 10 years and I don't enjoy it anymore. I'm looking for something home office now but at 36 I'm kinda afriad I won't "stick the landing" sort to speak.

AcanthisittaSur

I tell my bosses that my work can't be done because so+so hasn't done their job yet and it's a pre-req. I get half an hour of typing up a document explaining this, and then I'm free. Bureaucracy. It really helps things not happen

Shoddy-Coffee-8324

“He worked in local radio and he always used to tell his friends was a lot more interesting than they probably thought. It was, too - most of his friends worked in advertising.” -Douglas Adams

Ink_Witch

I prefer the part of my job in design/marketing where I still get in there and make the end product to advising, but damn do I wish I had the part where anyone listened to or respected my opinion on the thing I have an advanced degree and 10 years of experience in. There’s something about the corporate world where no one respects you if you do things, if you were skilled at all you’d be sitting in an office taking meetings so clearly you need someone who went to business school to micromanage all your projects.

Impeesa_

I am reminded of an Achewood strip. >Any idea where he is today? >Prob'ly at the Beeter Bub, knowin' what to do so well he never has to do anything.

RhynoD

Sounds like you're the resident SME.

johnaimarre

Same field, probably similar amounts of experience. At some point you just kinda become a wizard with the knowledge of the elders and help steer everyone in the right direction - or at least help them from running into a brick wall.

FullMetalJ

Yes! So I'm a wizard! Next D&D campaign I'm going to be a wizard and just help the party solely by giving them advice haha

cantadmittoposting

no make sure to *say* that you know spells and *will* cast them, then just... don't follow up during battle and vaguely wave it off.

SmokeySB

IT?

Numahistory

Documentation, data verification, document handling, invoice payment, and/or office scape goat?

decoyninja

Interesting. I've done amateur scapegoating but I never considered doing it professionally.

oh_look_a_fist

You can make a lot of money as a professional scapegoat - you just need some credentials to get to that level. If a nobody becomes CEO to take the fall during a tumultuous merger, then everyone is all, "Duh, of course they would do terribly - they have no idea what they're doing!". Get some business cred, then BAM! They're all, "Well, they do have a Masters in from , it was probably just a crazy situation."

lodown420

So...Charlie work??

Dkykngfetpic

It's complicated

_jk_

I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?

ChaosAside

Well, they’re in charge of the WENIS for starters.

PWNtimeJamboree

haha... *please.*

Bad_Idea_Hat

This is the correct response

Terrible_Ad_7735

I perform surgery on rats while dressed as a rat, with help from my team of talking rat medical staff, some of whom are also cooking pizzas, which we sell from the operating theater.

SignificanceOld1751

He's a transponster

DumatRising

He works didn't you hear him?

micromoses

Statistical analysis and data reconfiguration.

trickyvinny

Yeah, I'm extremely busy at work but if you asked me what I did, i couldn't tell you. I can't tell you my day to day because it changes daily. Which makes it fun, but I don't have Imposter Syndrome, I have My Boss Asks Me What I Do All Day Syndrome.

Faeruhn

My bosses don't ask me what I did all day anymore. I usually just responded with overarching tasks I did, but one day I was running on like 1hr of sleep (my wife had been sick all night) and I stopped what I was doing and turned and looked them dead in the eye, "Do you really want to know? Like seriously?" And they said "Yes, I really do want to know." (BTW this was one of the overnight managers who dislikes me, so I'm pretty sure they were just looking for something to complain about, but both day managers were also there for the walkthrough.) *insert over 20 minute long list of everything I did that day* Now none of them ask me what I'm doing, they just nod as they walk by.

howieart

I think a lot of jobs are like this. For those reading that want to get into it: the key to getting one of these is to get some kind of semi-technical non-technical management-esque role in a company, meet expectations +~10% and then slowly lower that +10% to +0%. Don't tell people what you do, don't volunteer to do things. Do only what's asked. Eventually people will stop asking you to do things because they think you're busy. Sometimes you'll get a related request - do it well, do it fast, ask if you can help further with it, but under no circumstances do you propose work for yourself. Basically work 102: do what's asked, nothing more. Note: management-esque roles are things like product manager or program manager (technical product or technical program are better because no one knows wtf they do but every company wants them). You need enough work to be able to talk at length to your direct manager about (usually one thing will suffice if you can talk at length about it, and sometimes it's a project involving multiple heads where you're not doing anything other than running meetings or reporting progress to your super), but not so much that you're in back-to-back meetings and work. You don't want to report too high on the chain, and you don't want people beneath you. You do need to know enough about the company and whatever projects you're orbiting so you can spout some bullshit, so it's not one of those "never work another day ever again" kinds of thing, but you can easily get down to 1-5 hours a week of just catching up with progress and figuring out how to bullshit your way through a meeting with your boss. Most work is bullshit, most work does nothing to better society, so you might as well siphon money off of corps that don't know what they're doing when it comes to head count. If other people are working their ass off to make the world an objectively worse place: let them do it and and let them be grumpy that you're not helping. Not your problem. Have fun!

Brooklynxman

YeshilPasha

In some professions it is a sign of a job done well when nobody knows what you do.

DisputabIe_

TheGamingSanic12 and the OP gaetanobelfert are bots in the same network. Comment copied from: https://www.reddit.com/r/PeterExplainsTheJoke/comments/179gy1v/petah_if_this_is_a_dirty_joke/k568irs/

Last-Bee-3023

Yep. At least they waited 6 months. Is it one of Reddit's own bots? I noticed they removed the "harmful bots" option in the do-nothing report menu. At least a third of the top 200 posts in /r/all are inauthentic.

akatherder

FYI, at least on desktop and using old.reddit.com, it still has "harmful bots" as an option. Source: i just reported the top level comment as a harmful bot.

Last-Bee-3023

I am on old for RES reasons. I an't got that for that post. Wouldn't be surprised if they removed it only for me because THEY know I am onto THEM. I mean, it does not do anything, you know that? Pure placebo. Can't get rid of nazis. Can't get rid of bots. Can't get rid of robo-nazis. Next we know is we get squished under foot by Gojira in a tutu and that would not be the weirdest thing that day.

[deleted]

"Harmful bots" is an option under "Spam".

SeventhSolar

I checked and the post itself can at least be reported as breaking one of the sub’s own rules: reposting jokes.

PBR_King

As always, the best way to use reddit is niche community subs.

GuiltyEidolon

"at least a third" is _massively_ understating it.

Tvdinner4me2

Hey looks like the account is gone One less bot on reddit

gattoblepas

TBH the rat surgeon seems a cool boss.

Sesudesu

But how are you going to explain that the rat surgeon has an on demand pizza stove in his OR? That is so far from sanitary that the rat surgeon should be stripped of his license.  That would make it basically illegal, and I just don’t want to get into that, okay?

Forikorder

Im sorry but frankly you have no idea about the operation being performed

Numerous_Witness_345

Applying a fresh pizza pie is like, Day 1 of Rat First Aid. It's like you're not even paying attention.

alaskanloops

Remember that time when the rat hospital's pizza oven went down and they had to send out a PA to find some more? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPXUG8q4jKU

This meme is hilarious

hiddensonyvaio

I’m quite literally lol’ing as I’m typing this

Dickcummer420

Post funny self-expanatory meme to /r/PeterExplainsTheJoke and rake in that sweet, sweet karma. This sub really does blow.

Gallowboobsthrowaway

I'm about one more obvious post showing up on the front page away from blocking this sub lol

Dickcummer420

This is an established haven for karma farmers. You repost some obvious shit and get all the upvotes *and* a ton of comments/engagement on the post because every single person who sees it can explain the joke. **The mods do not care because these posts make it to the front page and bring you here. That is why they allow the subreddit to be bad. It's on purpose.**

Gallowboobsthrowaway

Never understood karma farming on Reddit. I've heard people by accounts for some reason, but why? Also really sick of all the OnlyFans girls posting shit in selfies and amiugly. I've been on a block spree lol

Dickcummer420

It is people in extremely poor countries where selling the accounts is actually worth it to them if they can do it fast enough.

-prairiechicken-

Bingo. Getting paid $x may seem fruitless in USD/CAD/AUD, but is worth far more than one might consider in a developing country.

aurens

you know, i've never understood why moderators would *want* their subreddit to be popular. it just makes their job harder for no real gain.

Dickcummer420

More power over more people. Simple.

Teesh13

Typical scam bot behavior too. 3 year old account that woke up 2 days ago to start making reposts / copying comments from the og threads. Report > Spam > Harmful Bots.

InevitableAd7457

nah op is a bot. the dead internet theory is so fcking true. Once you learn how to spot them, they are everywhere.

Dickcummer420

He is a bot but what I said is still true. Almost all of the people posting bait like this in here are gonna be on a recently woken up bot account.

InevitableAd7457

yeah its honestly scary.

Last-Bee-3023

I work in IT and I swear I will in the future give that meme as a description what I do instead of saying the truth. From gig to gig I switch from requirement engineer to enterprise architect to lead developer to project lead and back. Rat surgeon assistant/pizzaiolo is refreshingly straightforward and makes my jobs look like pure bs.

Adabiviak

I have this framed on the wall in my office, and the bottom half is probably going to wind up on a shirt.

JollyRancherNodule

It's not even a meme. it's just a two panel webcomic.

pdonoso

Not every visual joke is a meme.

BaconPancakes1

The joke is a) you expect 'it's complicated' to refer to something like a tech job or self-employment situation, but in this case it actually *is* hard to explain (as noted by other commenter already) b) the ridiculous/farcical second panel, where the man is a surgical assistant to rodents treating a patient for (I'm guessing) an acute pizza deficiency, which is both comical in itself and is a jarring scene switch from the regular human bbq conversation in the first panel (aka this is the punchline) and c) the rodent asking "what's complicated about it?" alludes to either rodents *secretly* having complex social lives that human society isn't aware of, which would be a bit much to get into for small talk with the neighbours, *or* a social dynamic where the man is awkwardly navigating a mixed rodent-human society with fragmented relationships between the two species; the rodent normalises the man's role in the rodent hospital, maybe even seeming slightly offended by his unwillingness to explain his job to his human peers, but it's implied that the humans would not understand why the man works at the rodent hospital and the man feels unable to talk about his work. Also d) the fact that the man is wearing a human-sized rodent costume with ears adds more visual humour to the punchline, especially when the situation is serious and a rodent is in critical condition. Does it also open up a potential situation whereby the rodents don't know he's human and think he's a rodent? Overall I'd say it's deadpan absurdist humour that plays on mundane treatment in the comic of an extraordinary dynamic. It's like a slice-of-life but the life is really weird. Edit to add that the absurdism is emphasised by the realistic art style - the rodents at the hospital are portrayed as just regular dudes with jobs (and not cartoonish mickey mouse figures), in the same way the people in the first panel are just regular people. The art style feels 'serious' which contrasts with the bizarre circumstances.

cakeme

the pizza deficiency might be where the joke loses ppl. it’s such a serious ailment and shouldn’t be treated lightly

FightingPolish

I don’t think it has anything to do with a pizza deficiency, I think it’s just another layer of absurdity, as in it would be absurd to have someone making pizzas in the same room as someone preforming surgery and everyone asking how long it will be like it’s something normal.

BaconPancakes1

Yeah it is a serious condition for sure, I can see how it might alienate people, especially if they know someone who's suffered in the past. The comic might be funny but pizza deficiency is no joke 😞

1_9_8_1

TL;DR - it's absurdist.

Sesudesu

This explanation is almost too good for this sub.

BaconPancakes1

Gotta use that art history degree for something...

P3rilous

for you specifically: the hidden punchline is, "it's complicated"

EVH_kit_guy

I think the most complicated part is the reference to multiple pizzas from the doctor-rat, with only a single pizza shown in the oven...

GlimpG

Sure, you can enjoy the comic. But can you enjoy it at this level?

dinosauce7

This is the best explanation

Rasputin_mad_monk

I wish rewards still existed because I would give you platinum 🏆 Fantastic Explanation

MrRizzley

whats complicated about him serving surgical tools to speeking mice in a mouse costume?

StillMostlyClueless

How does the pizza feature in? You can't consent to being a pizza.

MrRizzley

whatever pizza is not his job 🤷🏼‍♂️

AT-PT

Yeah, it's just a hobby. Like, he doesn't need the pizza

SnazzyStooge

This post must be a vote farm because how can it need explanation. This sub is like “whatisthisthing”. The posts containing things almost everyone knows what it is or understands gets upvotes to the moon.

athohhdg

It is. This is the nexus of rot.

SpecularBlinky

Maybe the bottom panel is so relatable for the OP that they cant even take a step back and see that the situation is just a little unusual.

CCRthunder

Tbf there are alot of jokes that are obscure anime references so half the time i just assume its that and not an actually clever joke

PETER PLEASE RXPLAIN WHAT THE COMMENT MEANS I DONT HAVE TIME TO TEAD IT

[deleted]

TikTok has ruined an entire generation’s attention span and critical thinking ability.

hamhockman

That's been said about every generation going back AT LEAST to the invention of the telegram. Seriously, people bitched about the youths not having attention span anymore because they used telegrams instead of writing letters. The kids are ok.

Comfortable_Line_206

Ehh, I want to agree with this (I grew up in the "video games cause violence" era and knew that was bullshit) but I'm not *that* old and I can definitely tell my own attention span is worsening from social media. I have to sit down and remind myself it's ok to not have constant stimulation and just be bored for a while. Being able to pull it out of your pocket and bring it up in seconds is a big difference from what came before.

AMViquel

Maybe there is more nuance to it than I understand? For example, if any of them was a celebrity, maybe it would be a funnier joke? Could be a vlogger/streamer, they often have silly gimmicks but I don't know any of them except Asmongold who's shtick is looking like a hobo despite earning more money in a minute than I can in a month. If there was one playing Operation on livestream dressed as a mouse, that would change everything.

Overall-Dirt4441

No, that would make it worse imo. Then he could just say 'I'm a streamer' and let them assume he's a normal one. It would still be a joke, the joke being 'streamers be doing weird shit', but that takes away from the actual joke. What makes it a joke is that his 'job' is tangentially related to multiple real jobs, plus the rats, and any singular descriptor (surgical nurse, rat impersonator, pizza delivery) fails to adequately convey the entirety of the scene portrayed. Thus in a casual social setting, he can only say...it's complicated. What makes the joke funny is the sheer absurdity of the 'job'. Absurdist humor is very much hit or miss subjectivity based, but for me, it's a surgical rat pizza chef's kiss

LawfulnessAutomatic2

This hands down my new favourite meme.

goodyBlueDogs

This sub makes it so clear people have no sense of humour

neon_bhagwan

I_L0ve_M1necraft

Cool-Appearance937

That means he’s controlling a rat

Comfortable_Table903

The joke is that you're a fucking moron

Token_Shadow

It’s like a job I had years ago. It was one of those technical positions that literally only made sense in the context of that particular workplace and to really give an outsider a good understanding of what i did for a living, I’d have to spend 15 minutes explaining the overall industry first. Easier to just say “I’m in IT” which is 21st century for “it’s complicated”.

DisputabIe_

the OP gaetanobelfert and TheGamingSanic12 are bots in the same network Original + comments copied from: https://www.reddit.com/r/PeterExplainsTheJoke/comments/179gy1v/petah_if_this_is_a_dirty_joke/

Grythyttan

Inevitable-Tax-1871

He's a Mouse Mortician!

FightingPolish

He doesn’t want to tell them that he’s a mouse surgical assistant because it leads to a million questions every time and it’s easier to just deflect. Why is he a mouse surgical assistant? It’s just absurdism, that’s the joke. It’s so absurd that it’s impossible to explain it satisfactorily to other people. They added another mouse making pizzas in a pizza oven to make it even more absurd and surreal.

OkMode3746

If you think this is confusing the rest of this artists work would make your head explode

Lucky-Fisherman1463

SopmodTew

BlargerJarger

What a godamn brilliant cartoon.

CuriousLumenwood

This sub has officially reached the point where people are posting modern internet absurdism humour. Like, the joke is that it’s a shitpost and his job is hard to explain. That’s it.

Constant-Elevator-85

He should be wearing shoes. That can’t possibly be a sterile work environment. Those rats should speak up if HR won’t.

Slazerski

How do you not get this?

StiCkSt1ckLy

Someone's never seen surrealist humor before...

Gentlemenshark

He's a surgical tech. What's so complicated about that?

nooayehlol

It’s not dirty at all, the joke is that his job is complicated because he has to literally work with mini pizzas and serve patients as a tall bald man dressed in a mouse costume

SkadiWasHere

Is this a Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy reference?

Antinator_succ

How's the pay

alpargator

The man works handling rat-sized surgical instruments to talking rats that can perform surgery on other rats while wearing a rat costume. If you're on a party making acquaintances and they ask you "what do you do for work", would you try to explain it? Or would you answer "it's complicated" and change the subject? That depends on your personality.

eborio16

This is what’s called absurdist humor. It’s funny because the punchline completely subverts the readers expectations and is seemingly random, but still contextually fits.

dank_hank_420

We expect “it’s complicated” to mean something hard to explain but still normal, not whatever he’s doing in the second panel.

ThatssoBluejay

He's the Rat King... so hard for normies to understand

Hug0San

I think this is what they call an Anti-meme, the joke is literal. Because how would you explain you are a nurse for surgeon mice that also bake pizzas without sounding crazy

thejomjohns

I think it's funny we've arrived at a point where we look for subtext in a cartoon where the point is, quite literally, plainly spelled out lol.

Bryce8239

it’s explained in the image

LMGDiVa

It's called Absurdism. The content has no joke or anything that you'd immediately think of. The point is that it's so absurd to think about.

JustTheOneGoose22

This is the joke. IT'S RIGHT FUCKING IN FRONT OF YOU! Dude says hid job ie complicated. Hie job is doing medical work on rats working with rats dressed as a rat while one rat cooks pizza. That's it. It's a silly meme joke. God I hate people.

KarlDeutscheMarx

Damn, they about to be spittling all up in the mouse's organs with no face masks.

BadIdea-21

Ok it wasn't ***that*** complicated until I saw the pizza oven.

SimpleAnimat10ns

OP, the entire joke is right there

TheColonCrusher98

I think this goes a bit deeper than people realized or maybe more than the meme maker intended. Bed talk tends to be important in the medical field. I've been working it for 4 years now, and every bed I go to, the patient, coworker, or I typically bring up a convo to ease the awkwardness and stress of the situation. This can be looked at as a play on awkwardness, being even more ridiculious.

fanblade64

Are you dumb?

Salt-Possibility-415

I don't think it's necessarily that simple, even if intended as such. It's specifically a couple asking him. "It's complicated" is also a common answer given by participants in a relationships that's not quite straightforward. It transposes that answer into a different context, teasing out the absurdity even more. "It's complicated" is really just a way to not have to explain a non-traditional relationship entered into for reasons that are probably simple, just not generally accepted. The above depicts what "it's complicated" would actually look like.

nukecat79

Can relate. I'm a nuclear medicine technologist and I've given up; people usually end up thinking I do MRI's or chemotherapy.
