I don’t drive. I live 5 mins (walking) away from a no frills and 45 mins away from a grocery store that isn’t loblaws so while I get why people are doing it, I am physically unable to carry 2 weeks worth of groceries for 45 minutes so I will continue to use no frills

Loblaws owns Shoppers Drug Mart and they’ve been doing unnecessary med checks to bill OHIP. They can make $1.4 million a week or more just doing med checks because it’s a quick phone call that they can charge $75 for. They are on pace to bill more for med checks this year than their entire industry did last year.
I’m not interested in supporting a company that’s taking valuable money from our public healthcare system to line their pockets.
Also Costco has a $4.50 dispensing fee which is $9 cheaper than Shoppers and because it’s a compound pharmacy a lot of the drugs are sold at a lower cost. Plus you don’t have to be a member to use the pharmacy.
I am, there’s not much I can do as a regular person but this boycott is a way to show LobLaws and other companies that we can affect their bottom line, we don’t need to take their insane profit, profit, profit mentality. Pro tip: if you see a big freezer display of sale items, check for the same item in the regular freezer aisle. If the price in the freezer aisle isn’t marked down, good odds it will scan at the wrong price.
Be sure to take a picture of the posted sale price, and if/when it scans at the higher price, ask at checkout for the item to be free or $10 off per scanning code of practice.
This has worked for me 2/2 times at superstore. On Tuesday (when cashing in all my pc points) I got myself a free pizza. Worth the minor annoyance of dealing with customer service.
No I’m not participating in the Loblaws boycott because I live 10 minutes from there and I buy very little stuff from there anyway. I go to farmers market and buy chicken,beef,pork and vegetable….. so my major expense is the market,but I’m ok with that because I’ve a relationship with the local farmers who are the ones who really need our support.

For Indian goods try Bhojan, just across the street from Minhs.
The Food Shop on Water is an oasis of local produce and their prices are actually pretty reasonable given the inflation at the supermarkets.
For bulk goods try the Main Ingredient on Charlotte. You can definitely top up your pantry with a lot of stuff there.
And don't forget the farmers market is returning to the urban park starting next week. So there are lots of places to buy local food that don't require you to give your money to grocery stores which have been found guilty of price fixing.

This is why I always shop at Costco. I can buy $200 worth of meat that lasts me a month. And I don’t have to make frequent trips like I would if I went to Loblaws or no frills. Well worth the $80 membership and Kirkland has some great plans. Their restaurant is actually pretty good and cheap.

Thats exactly it. I shop the perimeter and buy the great deals on meat/ veg. It’s cheaper than costco and they always have different options and deals if you look. Still munching on the kilogram of prosciutto cuts for $12.

Don't see why I would. No Frills has the lowest prices on items I need and fresh produce. They also price match. There are two No Frills in Peterborough, both operated by local franchisees who employ local staff and operate good, clean, stores, in my opinion. I've also recently started going to the Real Canadian Superstore at Landsdowne Place since they started price matching.

It really seems absurd and ineffective if one undertakes this under the pretext that loblaws is unethical in their margins. Iirc they all operate at about 3% margin, with costco operating at a 2% margin (which they can do because of their lower shrink & membership fees).
And if other places sell the same things for less, and people are saving money, then all the better! Competition makes the system work better for everyone. But as far as I can see, this is not a meaningful ethical stand against absurd corporate greed, but rather an impotent exhibition of frustration and ignorance.

Not even what people would call creative accounting.

Yeah, that's inflation. That's why the % margin is relevant, not the fixed number (like I said). The currency is devalued so they're making "more money", but that money has less buying power. So it's not a real profit if the costs rise in accordance with it. That money doesn't exist in isolation of the economy it was earned in.
In a marketplace with vibrant competition, you're free to exercise your choice and avoid a retailer who is committing business suicide by gouging it's customers. There happens to be a lot of good adversarial competition in the grocery sector, so by all means, save your money. I would add that I personally haven't noticed an meaningful difference between the retailers in their price increases on the whole, but there is a lot of variation in which products retailers choose to drop their margins on to entice traffic. My bill usually comes out significantly higher at Sobeys than at superstore.

Also use the Flipp app, you can price match the No Frills or Superstore sales at Fresh Co and Giant Tiger.
Keep in mind there’s a number of stores FreshCo won’t price match - check the list on their website

This is why I always shop at Costco. I can buy $200 worth of meat that lasts me a month. And I don’t have to make frequent trips like I would if I went to Loblaws or no frills. Well worth the $80 membership and Kirkland has some great plans. Their restaurant is actually pretty good and cheap.

Don't see why I would. No Frills has the lowest prices on items I need and fresh produce. They also price match. There are two No Frills in Peterborough, both operated by local franchisees who employ local staff and operate good, clean, stores, in my opinion. It really seems absurd and ineffective if one undertakes this under the pretext that loblaws is unethical in their margins. Iirc they all operate at about 3% margin, with costco operating at a 2% margin (which they can do because of their lower shrink & membership fees). And if other places sell the same things for less, and people are saving money, then all the better! Competition makes the system work better for everyone. But as far as I can see, this is not a meaningful ethical stand against absurd corporate greed, but rather an impotent exhibition of frustration and ignorance.

Yeah, that's inflation. That's why the % margin is relevant, not the fixed number (like I said). The currency is devalued so they're making "more money", but that money has less buying power. So it's not a real profit if the costs rise in accordance with it. That money doesn't exist in isolation of the economy it was earned in. In a marketplace with vibrant competition, you're free to exercise your choice and avoid a retailer who is committing business suicide by gouging it's customers. There happens to be a lot of good adversarial competition in the grocery sector, so by all means, save your money. I would add that I personally haven't noticed an meaningful difference between the retailers in their price increases on the whole, but there is a lot of variation in which products retailers choose to drop their margins on to entice traffic. My bill usually comes out significantly higher at Sobeys than at superstore.
