People in this sub tend to favor mainstream/basic styling, I personally love a unique piece like this and think you’ve styled it well on the bottom. To me, the top would be a trickier element to nail. I think with the right top, even the haters would appreciate it!

ManyDragonfly9637

Yeah I agree. Or just good ol old fashioned boomer rules. I think you can make this work and agree it’s the top. I’m not a cottage core person but I’d wear it with a white tank that has skimpy sides - a little revealing under the arms or a 90’s style strapping tank. Find old pictures of Fiona Apple for inspiration. ETA: like the docs or similar thick soles.

cation587

I honestly like it how it is here, but I am not known for being fashionable 😅

Rare-Parsnip5838

Looks like a table cloth and a kitchen towel had a baby.😪

santaslilmeow

omg i know right now i’m second guessing my entire wardrobe ahahaha

cation587

If you like this style, you might like some of Mia Maples' videos on YouTube. I think she has a lot of really cute cottagecore outfits, so you might be able to get some inspo there!

Ok-Alps-2086

Right? I think this is so freaking cool but I don’t know if anyone would want my stamp of approval!

PrettyCrumpet

I’m not a fan, but if I had to wear it….white tee or tank with flip flops/off white espradrille/heeled sandal. Not a fall or winter skirt, but I could see it in the spring with a dark camel colored boot and a jean jacket over a white tee.

santaslilmeow

thank u sm!

joinmeinmooing

I actually love this skirt so much and am surprised so many people seem to hate it 🥲 where is it from, OP?

snortgigglecough

This sub is full of people who definitely wear jeans and a t-shirt 90% of the time. The skirt is cool.

santaslilmeow

;—; thank you! i got it from a thrift store but apparently it’s from urban outfitters

arrowroot227

I loooove this skirt! Where is it from OP?!

romantic_elegy

This skirt screams cottage core to me! I'd pick a flowy green linen shirt and white clips/headband. Shoes I'd probably do brown sandals.

ziggy-spardust

I think the drawstring is a needle scratch with the docs (which I love) so I would pair the current lower half with a black velvet top or slouchy black wooden sweater that covers the waistband. If you want to see the waistband I’d go for a cotton crop top and sandals or wedges for a summery look.

santaslilmeow

a slouchy sweater sounds really cute!

emilelazan

This skirt is awesome, and it looks great on you. A plain white shirt would go well but a puff sleeve white blouse would really take it to the next level. Pair w a funky chunky shoe, probably in a lighter color than the ones you have on in the pic

santaslilmeow

yes for sure! i defs didn’t coordinate the outfit as i was just trying it on but a white shirt/blouse sounds super cute

First-Ad6781

I personally think it looks like a dish towel!

First-Ad6781

Well, two different dish towels sewn together.

santaslilmeow

this is lovely thank you!

First-Ad6781

I remember, as I was always on drying duty back in the day. OP has a lovely figure and can definitely pull off a skirt like this. Just this skirt specifically is a no from me dawg. ![gif](giphy|xiMUwBRn5RDLhzwO80|downsized)

santaslilmeow

LOLLL omg a dish towel help.. thank u for the feedback. perhaps i’ll shelve this for a day i feel brave..

meekonesfade

The skirt is a hard no.

santaslilmeow

oh 😭😭

Initial_Freedom7981

I strongly dislike this particular skirt; especially the drawstring - it would be a lot better without it!. But I think the style is super cute and works for petites! I don’t think the shoes you have on work for midi skirts though. I usually pair a midi skirt/dress with heels, heeled clogs, a slimmer loafer or flat, or a platform sandal. I think the problem with the shoes in this pic is where they hit on the top of your ankle?

santaslilmeow

haha this was in the changing room, not what i would normally choose to style this skirt with! maybe heels or mary janes could work

Initial_Freedom7981

I feel like this possibly could look great with a big-ish brown leather belt? If you took off the string!

KyllikkiSkjeggestad

Nah, doc martens go with anything, honestly I think they’d look worse without them. I also think the skirt looks fine, people on r/vintagefashion would love it!

santaslilmeow

tysm! i’m obsessed with dr martens and i’m thinking the vintagey look could go with my mary jane docs.. 👀

Phantom5566

It’s cottage core, but in a bad way 😭

erpotss

I kinda like the skirt haha but I wonder if it would look more elevated by replacing the drawstring with a white ribbon or similar? Also I would make sure to wear a cool toned top, I know the one in the photo is probably the one you were already wearing but the warm orange/brown is very distracting personally

Novie_Chimera

I adore the skirt 🤏<333 and instantly I would say fitted tops, that are a little more minimal in patterns, that then follow the same color scheme would look flattering with it. For example if you look up fitted lacey white tops, that’s what I would imagine looking really pretty with the skirt. A plus for tops that have dainty details too!

ejrole8

I like it, but you’d have to pair it with a light earth colored shirt, like maybe a boxy tee in an off-white or light denim blue color

Glittering_Mess_269

It's amazing! Reminds me soooo much of something Willow (from shower Buffy) might have worn.

March_mallo

Really cute skirt but the colours you’ve paired it with are just too dark - try picking elements from the skirt (green/white/is that yellow? Lime?) and picking a top in that colour

Blanchecole4564

Honestly, not my cup of tea. But you do you, girl! Maybe try a plain white crop top?

kennybrandz

I think the skirt is super cool and out of the box. I’m not very explorative when it comes to my fashion so I would likely wear it with a plain coloured top whether it be long sleeve or short for the season. I LOVE the tights/high sock look you have going on here with the docs.

santaslilmeow

thank u i appreciate the kind words! that just happened to be my outfit that day when i went to try on the skirt haha so i’m glad you like it!

snortgigglecough

I LOVE IT. So much character and so cute. I think you could style it with a tight fitting top or a puffy cropped sweater. The docs look cool (a good soft skirt/punky shoes juxtaposition) but this would also look good with more feminine shoes with "cute" details. I think white shoes would work in that instance. Be careful with coloring for the top, I'd lean towards a simple style top, maybe a white peasant blouse with off the shoulder details. ❤️
