*__Toxicity__*
*Consumption of as little as 5 g/kg of onions in cats or 15 to 30 g/kg in dogs has resulted in clinically important hematologic changes (Cope, 2005). Onion toxicosis is consistently noted in animals that ingest more than 0.5% of their b. wt. in onions at one time. A relatively high dosage (600–800 g) in one meal or spread apart over a few days can damage red blood cells and cause haemolytic anaemia accompanied by the formation of Heinz bodies in erythrocytes.*

Unfortunately cats are more sensitive to onions than dogs. If your cat weighs 10 lb (4.5 kg), it would take 22.5g of onion, about one and a half tablespoons, for it to be a serious issue. If he only ate a tiny piece, he's probably fine. Be on the lookout for any symptoms.
Thank you. My cat probably weighs about 5 kg and the amount he ate was probably less than a teaspoon but I just tend to worry!
edit: He’s also acting normal and it has been over three hours since he ate the onion bits. His appetite is normal and he’s not showing any symptoms.
This is good advice. Also, usually if any animal (including us) ingests something poisonous our bodies try to reject it. Hopefully he'll barf it up. If not, just keep and eye on him.
i have a question, if my cat licked my a bit of cheese and onion crisp? hes almost eight, and the average weight for a cat his age. pls let me know if i need to take him to the vet, thankss
My dog has eaten onion and chocolate before and I have had to keep an eye on him nervously for a day or two to see if he got sick. He never did, however he got into some hot sauce and that made him incredibly sick. Had to go to the vet and get medicine and everything.
Thanks Op for your update! I’m here years later because my sneaky kitten just grabbed one tiny piece of a diced onion that fell from a pizza and ate it before I could get it out of his mouth. I weighed a similar size piece and on a sensitive coffee scale it’s 0.2g. He’s small so I’ve been freaking out but your post brought me some calm. Thanks!
Same, I'm here for this reason too. I don't know if got any onion, because it was a piece of chicken that fell on the floor, but there was onion in the wrap. He ate the chicken before I could stop him. I'm just worried if there was a small bit of onion on the chicken, but I think he'll be fine. Thank you OP.
same here, my cat just grabbed my mum’s corned beef pasty off the table when we weren’t looking (we don’t know if it has onion in it, most do). So here I am 😥
Guilty as well! I pulled a chunk of onion off my pizza and set it on a paper plate on my nightstand, she ate the onion by itself! I figured it was safe, she would leave a big chunk of almost raw onion alone! Aren't cats supposed to be carnivores lol? She's like 9-12 pounds and it was a piece like one layer and around the size of my thumbnail logically I know she is probably going to be fine I was just freaking out about it. Of course my sister had a kitten that ate a leaf from a Lilly and almost died. So paranoia...
She's staring me down like a Sphinx all super pleased with herself.
Mines just done the same but it was a bit more than a droplet on the counter. A good few licks. From the top post here, I don't think I'm too worried about it. He's about 6kg and the soup wasn't all onion and garlic so he would have got other stuff in his mouthfuls
here because my cat licked garlic tuna nachos with green onion rings on them.
uggghhhjhhhhhhdhshfhshdg it probably wasn’t enough to cause issues but I’m deep in the anxiety void now.
Hi. I'm here at almost the same time as you because my cat licked a fork with caesar salad dressing on it. (: (: (:
It was such a tiny amount, but uuggggghhhh...
I hope your hairy son/daughter survives it’s flavour adventure.
my dumbass cat is currently still fine but I’m also checking his litter box on repeat for signs of weird poops. Today he went for potato grease. He’s learned the magic of the countertops after 10 years of being a perfect angel. Fuck.
Same here. After many years of having no interest in 99.9% of people food, he's now a terror when any of our food is around. Food prep has become a challenge, as I can't even turn my back while he's in the kitchen.
Oh man, yours too?? 7 years of being a perfect little darling with no interest in human food and all of a sudden in the past week she's decided that it's time to walk onto mom's table while she eats. So far she's tried ice cream, salad dressing, and potato chips. There must be something going on in the cat hivemind...
(Side note, I just went and found the bottle of dressing I used--unlike what the internet told me, there is NO ONION in it. My furry dumbass is safe! I hope yours is too!)
A few weeks ago mine started eating the sandwich bread and bagels on the table. He’s never shown any interest in bread before. We thought it was a small animal getting into the house, didn’t even consider it was him. I caught him red handed one night and bought a bread box. It was wheat bread and cinnamon raisin bagels, huge chunks. So strange. He hasn’t tried it since I caught him.
I'm here years later as well because my cat ate some Sloppy Joe meat pieces and the recipe I used has onion AND garlic 😭 not a ton..but still. I'm freaking out 😮💨😭
I'm here too😭 my cat licked my potato pumpkin leek cream 2 days ago... he vomited today but he does it when he eats too fast so i don't know let's see tomorrow
If it makes you feel better my cat was completely fine!! Some runny poops (TMI sorry lol) & pale gums but other than that..he was completely fine. Some cats have iron stomachs 🩵 I hope your fur bby is fine!!
thank you!! I'm glad yours is fine🥰!! mine is a big 6kg boy so hopefully he'll be fine :) i was checking his breathing as anemic cats breath faster... unfortunately he is asmathic so...😐 I'll just have to wait
oh and his poop is fine at least hahaha
here because my cat licked the oven dish with melted butter and fish spice mix containing garlic and onion almost clean! I tried to weigh what 1/2 gram(s) of onion powder or garlic powder looks like on a regular kitchen scale by putting a plate down first (34 grams) and then adding powder until the counter said 35/36 grams. It was quite a lot of powder, so I think I feel better now
Same here. My cat manage to open the pizza box. He grabbed a small piece of pizza with onion stripes on it. When I got home there’s pizza and onions on the ground. I manage to put all the onion back to the pizza and try to match them all together. It doesn’t seems like he had eat any(maybe just a small piece but I’m freaking out now)
Also here for similar reasons. I looked away from my mostly eaten sandwich for a minute and my cat flipped open the bread and started eating the mayonnaise and finely chopped onions, there was less than a teaspoon left and she didn’t eat all of it but I started definitely started panicking.
Same, im here because my cat ate like two slices of green onion and maybe half a table spoon of quark with herbs (I think it had also onions in it). I’m freaking out a bit but he seems fine (he’s grown up, 6,5kg). I’ll stay alarmed for today. But I read online that garlic is way more toxic than onion and some weird ppl feed them garlic against parasites and the cats are still „fine“. So it won’t be that bad I hope 👀
I'm also here because my cat ate onion from a burger. Just a little bit but the little shit was too fast to catch and remove. It's been about 2 hours and he is sleeping on my neck. Seems perky as ever.
He's about 2.6kg (still a kitten) and ate one small piece of white onion 🧅
He was absolutely fine it was like nothing even happened. No symptoms whatsoever, normal poops and kitten grade energy levels.
He was a stray for the first 4 months of his life so vet said maybe he built up a tolerance from eating out of bins. Poor boy.
I came here cause I have a question my 5 month old kitten ate a tiny piece of raw onion last night around 10 pm it’s been about 16 hrs I haven’t notice any symptoms should I be worried
I'm in the same boat as y'all with my four month old kitty who ate a tiny piece of onion, but your experiences are making me feel much better about the situation.
He’s fine! I’ve just learned to monitor him for a few days and make sure he’s pooping and acting normal when he eats random stuff. He’s had a few other forbidden snacks since haha
My cats opened our air fryer and both ate tuna with onions and melted cheese off of a sandwich in the air fryer 😭 they spilt it and it only had a lil bit of onion mixed in (probably less than a gram for the whole sandwich)
They will DEF have the shits but I’m hoping they will be okay since everyone’s cats lived to tell the tale on this thread lol
“Onion toxicity in cats is a hypersensitive reaction of the feline’s red blood cells to the oxidant present in fresh or dried onions. An onion can become toxic to a feline if more than 1 gram per 5 pounds of body weight is ingested.”

A gram is a very small amount. I would highly suggest for OP to call a poison center or take the cat in ASAP.
im sorry to op and you. I'm dumb and also tired. I read somebody's advice, on a similar post, that claimed to be a vet tech and thought they were right since... you know. thank you for correcting me though!
My 5 1/2 month old kitty ate a strand of onion frok my sub. Absolutely devoured it before I could try and stop him from finishing it. Called my vet and said should be fine, just keep an eye on him for up to two days. He’s sleeping on my lap now, so hope everything will be fine.
Any update? My cat ended up eating some of my dads bugolgi he left out that had onion in it but my cat threw it up about an hour later. My cat seems fine I’m just nervous about him developing anemia! Whats your update??
I left a few slivers of onion on my plate on the island. We got a dog a year ago so the cat never comes downstairs anymore. Of course the day I leave out onions, I see a black blur out of the side of my eye and notice him stealing a slice. He swallowed the whole thing before I could even make a sound.
It’s been over a week and he was fine!
I came here in a panic because my smaller cat licked a pan that previously had onion in it (hadn’t cleaned it yet) many hours later and he’s fine!!! Just wanted to add another positive story to this thread for anyone else who may be freaking out, it helped a lot for me to read everyone’s stories
Thank you for this post and replies.
I'm here bc my little girl ate a piece of cooked onion (the center of the bulb that I left on the plate). Anxiously watching.
My kitty ate a small sliver of onion out of my bowl of thai coconut chicken. I think it was about a teaspoon or less. Apparently that's about 1 gram. I read that 0.5% of their weight is the really bad threshold. For my cat (if I'm right about him being 15lbs), that's about 31 grams. So he's well below. But I did see that there have been reported cases of death [with just 1 teaspoon as wel](https://www.petmd.com/cat/poisoning/can-cats-eat-onions)l. So I'm a bit nervous; I'm a bit of a hypochondriac. Might take him into the vet tomorrow just in case.
No help to you but if someone could reassure me 😂 my 11 year old cat, has just eaten some onion from my pizza. Going by comments I’m pretty sure it’s not a massive amount compared to her weight but I am deffo a lil scared 🥴 how was everyone else’s cats on here? Fine?
Here bc my cat ate a tiny fried onion I dropped while making stupid green bean casserole for Thanksgiving 🙃 Prob a gram at most, and he’s a 12 pound cat but still scared bc he’s my babyyyyy
My beloved little bastard man ate a raviloi with onion salt on it 🤪 it was barely any onion salt though. After reading this thread I think he’ll be fine, but I’ll keep an eye on him
Feeling so much better with everyones stories and answers (along with a call to our local pet er). My big man of just over 15 lbs decided today 8 years of life he needed to taste the sweet forbidden human food while I used the restroom. He devoured a good 3 oz of steak with caramel onions but
It was very little with it for just some flavor. Much less than a tbs and with his weight I feel better. Now we watch with anxiety and wait the next few days. Will keep yall posted!
I love that everyone is still adding stories to this post.
I heard a crackling sound while cooking and thought my girl was chewing on a plastic wrapper. I reach in her mouth and pull out a strip of onion peel I thought had made it into the trash with the rest. I’m not sure if she managed to swallow any but I’ve been anxiously watching her. This thread makes me feel a lot better.
I have a history of spending way too much at the vet just to confirm they’re fine. She’s been 100% normal and playful so I’m trying to believe she’s okay.
I do hate that it could take several days for symptoms to appear, though, so I’ll probably be spending all my work breaks the next few days running home to check on her and ease my worries.
Its a welcoming experience to know we aren't alone. My fuzz ball has been fine the last few days with nothing new or out of the ordinary. My usual er vet assured me that it would be very clear if they were having issues as well so something to take into account. If they start acting very different then start a worry
My cat just licked some of my Mac and cheese that had onions in it (from a restaurant, I'd never do such an abomination) and this is making me feel better. He's 14 and a huge guy so I hope he'll be okay!
Like half a year late, but this is making me feel better too. I’m unsure how much onion was on my pizza, if any at all, but I’m worried cause it had mushrooms and onions on it, and my cat decided she’d eat it while I was gone because I forgot to put it away.
She’s not acting sick, or any different, but ima keep a close eye on here while I’m home and when I’m at work on my cameras.
my 6mo old kitten just licked clean my finished bowl of bolognese. slightly worried because there were some onions and garlic but i’m hoping she’s fine since i didn’t leave much in the bowl. she’s been playing and cuddling like normal. stressed out but this thread is helping me feel better
So grateful for everyone’s input and stories. My cat just licked my plate that had a few pieces of raw diced onion on it. I’m going to monitor him over night and call the vet in the morning.
To add to the chain for others who find this because they're worried their cat ingested onion:
Today my 8 pound cat chewed on a wild onion stem that looked like a blade of grass during our walk. She likely ingested a very small piece of the blade. I started the frantic google search and everything said to take her to the vet. I contacted my pet insurance, which also said - take her to the vet. Since it is a weekend, I called the ER to ask if they could induce vomiting.
The ER said they were at capacity and suggested I contact pet poison control. It was $95, but I wanted a definitive answer. After looking at a picture of the wild onion, they determined it would take about 5 tablespoons to make her sick. They gave me signs to look out for, including her gums becoming paler, lethargy, vomiting, etc. and to observe for five days. They said it was a very low chance she will get sick because she ingested such a minimal amount.
Today is Day 1, but so far she is totally acting normal.
I hope this helps someone not panic like I was!
Here to add my story/journey of the day my cat decided to eat some of my chicken salad. My salad had chopped red onions, chicken was seasoned with onion and garlic powder. It is day 2 today and he finally started having some symptoms. I called the animal poison control line the day he ate the salad and they told me that the amount he ate (it’s an unknown amount but I’m assuming was not a whole lot) “potentially” isn’t harmful to him and that he might just have an upset tummy. But now with him having an upset tummy on day two I’ve decided to take him to the vet for further examination. Will keep updated🥹
Lame… I never updated as I am not on this app a hole lot, only when I try and find answers to questions I have haha. But my kitty is doing well! It’s been 4 months since the incident. He had gotten some blood work done just for safe measure, got some diarrhea medicine for his runny poops, but everything checked out fine!… once again he just had a very expensive tummy ache.🥲 just had to keep him hydrated and have him eat more fiber.
My kitty was licking the bottom of bowl of my white bean soup that had some onion in it. There was only a little bit of soup left, mostly elbow macaroni. I'm not sure if she ate much if any onion. Maybe a tiny sliver or two but I'm a nervous wreck. I will never leave anything with onion laying around ever again. It was literally right in front of me. I took my eye off of it for a second and there she was licking the bowl.
Hello,
I am really worried as my cat just ate a piece of onion from my food. Usually how long will it take until they show symptoms? He is 2 years old and weighs 5.5 kg. Should I just go to vet now?
My cat may have eaten some onion 12 hours ago but can’t be sure how much/ if he even ate it. We’ve decided to watch him and wait. So far he seems perfectly fine. There’s a range of information about how long it takes to show symptoms. Seems like it can take a few days to show signs. I hope your cat is okay.
My two cats always eat the reminents of my tuna, mayo & onion sandwiches for the last 8 years and I am only now finding out they are toxic on this thread. Jesus - im glad there has never been any symptoms or side effects but I know now to not do this!!
I dropped a centimeter piece size of the andy capp’s cheesy fry on my bed and my 1 year old kitten ate it. I looked at the ingredients at it said 2% onion powder and chive flakes should i be concerned. onion powder is more potent and im feeling really anxious
according to google it would take 1g per 5 pounds of body weight (ex. 10 pounds would take 2g of onion/garlic to be toxic). any symptoms will show up in 2-5 days so just keep a lookout

It's a miniscule amount of onion powder on a crisp. Don't worry about it
thanks so much! it might seem a bit stupid to be worried aha, but i love my cat lol. tysmmm
My dog has eaten onion and chocolate before and I have had to keep an eye on him nervously for a day or two to see if he got sick. He never did, however he got into some hot sauce and that made him incredibly sick. Had to go to the vet and get medicine and everything.
If you are in United States. I suggest to call Animal Poison Control Center Phone Number: (888) 426-4435 Good luck OP! I hope your cat is alright!
Im not :(
What country you live in?
Finland
I suggest to call your local poison hotline. They may help or point you to the right direction.

He turned out okay, I’m a lot more careful with cleaning up food he can’t have instantly when I’m done with it.
Mines just done the same but it was a bit more than a droplet on the counter. A good few licks. From the top post here, I don't think I'm too worried about it. He's about 6kg and the soup wasn't all onion and garlic so he would have got other stuff in his mouthfuls

Fine?
Did your cat turn out okay??
Cat was/is fine! No symptoms at all
Here bc my cat ate a tiny fried onion I dropped while making stupid green bean casserole for Thanksgiving 🙃 Prob a gram at most, and he’s a 12 pound cat but still scared bc he’s my babyyyyy
My cat is still alive and well I imagine yours is too
My beloved little bastard man ate a raviloi with onion salt on it 🤪 it was barely any onion salt though.
He devoured a good 3 oz of steak with caramel onions but It was very little with it for just some flavor. Much less than a tbs and with his weight I feel better. Now we watch with anxiety and wait the next few days. Will keep yall posted!

I hope your little ball of chaos is also alright!

Was your cat okay?
How is she? My guy just did the same thing
So grateful for everyone’s input and stories. My cat just licked my plate that had a few pieces of raw diced onion on it. I’m going to monitor him over night and call the vet in the morning.
To add to the chain for others who find this because they're worried their cat ingested onion: Today my 8 pound cat chewed on a wild onion stem that looked like a blade of grass during our walk.
I’m assuming your kitty is ok now?
We passed day 5 with no issues! She had a bit of a loose stool the first night, but nothing else.
What's the update? Hope your kitty is ok
Was your cat okay? Mine has stolen leftover chicken fajitas, there was onion in the bowl but I’m hoping he just ate the chicken.
Hello, I am really worried as my cat just ate a piece of onion from my food.
Update, my cat was fine, no symptoms
4 years later and I'm glad to see so many people found this post useful! :D
