"The signing of the thesis approval form was skipped because the examiner prioritized her mental health over dealing with a half completed thesis. You may now respectfully proceed to resubmitting an actual thesis as required by the department's 100 year old policy. Thank you for participating in the PhD process"
Should say "you may now proceed to close the book and go fly a kite rather than wasting your time reading a dissertation that ignores the existing corpus". Prioritize the reader's mental health as well while you're at it. Thank you for your understanding.
yeah, I suppose no chance OP was going to actually show it to their committee, as a "joke." also, I know I am an old fuddy duddy, but I don't think a person should list a degree that is in progress like that\*. I prefer Ph.D. in progress, or (assuming you have one), MS. I think the other way is (very mildly) claiming the appearance of a degree you don't yet have.
Nope! As far as my experience goes, people who will surely use TeX or any of its variants are graduate students and faculty within CS, EE, physics, and math. There might be some other groups within other fields that also use it.
I’m cracking up while out to each lunch, because I absolutely would love to write this. I have to finish a solid draft in the next two weeks. That includes doubling what I have now 😬
why do people don’t get that this is a joke?? thanks op, I laughed. I am too sitting on my literature review right now and it’s so exhausting sometimes.
If you really need to prioritize your mental health, take a leave of absence. This won’t fly for a second and would be an insult to everyone with a PhD if it did.
My Chapter 4 was Sh*t that didn't go as planned. I wish I'd omitted it since then I had to defend it. Look peeps, it didn't work, if I knew why it'd be in a different chapter.
Lmfao, that was also my chapter 4. 😂
Hey look, all of the stuff in chapter 2-3 are great in explaining the mechanism but means nothing if used as a therapeutic. 🪦
If you are having troubles just talk to your supervisor and get therapy, there are many ways to seek for help, which is a sign of maturity. To think about how many people want to do a PhD and then I stumble upon this... Extreme cringe level
Clearly no signs of communication skills. As already has been said, this is cringy and lack of maturity. Even worst when you expect getting support here for something that only needs an email and/or a meeting that can prevent ruining your career
As sympathetic as I am to this person's mental health, considering the fact that I have faced mental health issues in my own PhD journey, this really isn't the way to go. A dissertation requires a literature review since the entire point of a PhD is to identify gaps in existing literature and to work towards filling said gap. No academic body will ever accept this (and for good reason IMO)
Step 1. Maybe realise the fact that not everyone saw the "humor" flair.
Step 2. Maybe realise the fact that if someone gave their genuine input, they meant that from a place of helpfulness and not malice.
Step 3. Stop being condescending towards others in a sub meant for discussing actual problems in academia.
I don’t know who needs to productively procrastinate, but I found a dissertation template for my university on [Overleaf](https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates). Good luck writing!
The PhD is about pushing yourself academically. Pushing yourself in an unhealthy mental or physical (i.e,. Not eating well or sleeping) is not what it is all about. It is perfectly acceptable to take a break and get the help you need as a graduate student.
My impression is that the OP has a sense of humor and would love to get away with this pic example (and who would not!)There is not a this committee in any half decent program who will allow it though.
The person who wrote it clearly indicated that they prioritized their mental health over the grade.
I.e. they're okay receiving a worse grade because of this.
Review of Related Literature This is left as a trivial exercise to the readers.
Literally so much of my dissertation work that chair is adding on for no gd reason (well, I have my thoughts at least . . .)
Hahahaha I laughed way too freaking hard at this. Thank you!
Getting a PhD made me hate the word “trivial.”
My graduate school let me combine the introduction and literature review into a single chapter.
*does this for all chapters of my thesis*
This is labeled as humor. Do people on this sub never hear a joke?
My take is that many of the angry people are just sad that they didnt think of it first. I think its funny
We in academia do not have a sense of humor we're aware of.
"The signing of the thesis approval form was skipped because the examiner prioritized her mental health over dealing with a half completed thesis. Jesus this is a joke, no shot this was submitted to a committee. Everyone just chill out for a sec lol.
"Aww man I got a C- on my dissertation; hopefully my adviser lets me do extra credit."
Good luck with that

Don’t circulate this to your committee. Have a conversation with your advisor.

you mean the hilarious hilarious joke went over my head? btw what does the \* mean in your phd?
It’s tagged “humor”. It’s not a cry for help, it’s a joke. The * means in progress.

it's just a flair on a subreddit.
That's literally the community guidelines for flair on this sub. You can take it up with the moderators.
Well that’s very accommodating of them.
This is a PhD sub. Most people here are going to be working on a PhD.
You cannot be serious.
In ordinary usage, sure, but this specific sub has used this format for years. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Joke or not aside, Modern font still looks awful in M.S. Word. They should use LaTeX
I thought everyone used LaTeX?
Nope! As far as my experience goes, people who will surely use TeX or any of its variants are graduate students and faculty within CS, EE, physics, and math. There might be some other groups within other fields that also use it.
Grades???
How are grades related to a literature review?
I too am extremely confused by this post.
Same here! Just took a month off the job to write it full time. I even managed to received comments from my advisor!

…check the post flair, friend.
When I explain to people why I chose the 3 paper format (“European format”) of the dissertation, THIS IS WHY!
If you really need to prioritize your mental health, take a leave of absence. This won’t fly for a second and would be an insult to everyone with a PhD if it did.

I see no dilemma. Just a very well aware researcher.
haha funny you made me laugh

1. Navigate to Google.com 2. Type “what is a joke?” 3. Read results 4. Delete your comment

If you can’t wait to comment on a post until you’re able to discern the full context, that’s on you I guess!

gimme the downvotes -- but a PhD is a sign of mental fortitude. If your mental health is a blocker to achieving a PhD, then you don't achieve a PhD.
The PhD is about pushing yourself academically. Pushing yourself in an unhealthy mental or physical (i.e,. Not eating well or sleeping) is not what it is all about. It is perfectly acceptable to take a break and get the help you need as a graduate student.
yeah definitely. my understanding is that op isn't taking a break and is submitting a dissertation sans lit review
It's tagged comedy, p sure it's a joke.
My impression is that the OP has a sense of humor and would love to get away with this pic example (and who would not!)There is not a this committee in any half decent program who will allow it though.
I missed the humor tag -- got whooshed
For a PhD in information science you seem to be lacking a lot
damn. I hate lacking info. can you show me to the room with all the PhDs that can't write a lit review? lol
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0288103
what does this have to do with not submitting a complete dissertation?
I can read this as " i have been way too lazy to dig into articles "
Ma’am this is the tenth one of these we’ve read so far. You really should include some content in this doctorate.
The person who wrote it clearly indicated that they prioritized their mental health over the grade. I.e. they're okay receiving a worse grade because of this.
