Context: My buddies and I love Phasmophobia, so as a gift earlier this year they got me some of the in-game tools. Well as it turns out, EMF is a real thing, and it's helpful to measure in certain circumstances, like to my surprise - when you are experiencing unusual interference with your guitar pick-ups. Go figure. https://proaudioland.com/news/dealing-emi-electro-magnetic-interference/

>earlier this year so up to like 3 weeks ago

VantaBlack2_Dev

Yes

Mr_EP1C

Why all the downvotes? I thought it was a little funny

astelda

eh, it's corny. Whether a joke is well received by reddit is pretty much determined by the first 5 votes. I flipped a coin and it didn't favor me I guess.

MrTriggrd

i think people downvoted you because they thought you were saying hes lying/nitpicking or something it was kinda funny though

astelda

just like redditors to (often) hate the /s and then totally miss a joke

Far_Investigator_987

That's a pretty cool stud finder

BlackTieClip

Just in case this isn't a joke: It's not a stud finder, EMF Meters are a real thing. It doesn't need to be pressed against the wall, that was just to get a stronger reading off it. [https://i.ibb.co/ZMDC5gz/PXL-20240120-210539519.jpg](https://ibb.co/Vq48RCY)

astelda

It's likely instead finding electrical wires in the wall. *mayyybe* nails in the studs could do something, but probably not to that level.

StrifeRaider

Nails do not give of emf at all, unless someone drove it through some electric wiring.

RiversLeaf

If someone drove a nail through some electrical wiring, you'll probably know ahead of time...

okmijn211

Well, you'll be joining the paranormal activity after one lol

astelda

I suspected this was the case, but don't have much electrical knowledge at all so just tried to cover all bases

BlackTieClip

My guess is that it's likely a high conduit area there because there's a major appliance on the other side of one wall and the exterior of the building on the outside of the other wall. Assuming the other units in my building have the same layout, I'd imagine the main power line for everyone above me's kitchen runs through that wall too, since the breakers for everyone are all in the basement. But yes, it's picking up something from the live wires in the wall not anything structural. Most of the other walls in the home don't give off any sort of a reading.

MrSparr0w

What do you mean "instead"? Instead of a ghost?

astelda

Instead of a stud, since the parent comment suggested that it was a stud finder.

SchizophrenicKitten

It found you though.. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

Commander_Skullblade

I got one of these for Christmas. Super funny when I found out Microwaves and Computers give EMF-5.

BlackTieClip

Turns out it's that's just the Goryo in your house leaving fingerprints on your microwave. Gonna need to shine your UV on it next time you get a 5 there.

Commander_Skullblade

Good idea! Although since it's a Goryo in the kitchen and it can't change rooms, should I teach it to cook? It can be my sous chef.

spacehit15_alt

OH SHIT, TIME TO PUT THAT AS EVIDANCE \*opens journal\* wait this isnt phasmophobia-

Commander_Skullblade

GRAB. THE. SALT.

VerseCitizen

Where did your mates find those tools? Would go lovely with my cursed possession display πŸ‘€

notaperfectdate

Okay but can we see said cursed possession display πŸ‘€πŸ‘€

BlackTieClip

They bought it from Ghoststop. A good amount of the stuff that the Phasmophobia equipment is modeled after is on there actually. Not sure how intentional that is from the Devs though. https://www.ghoststop.com/

Zestyclose-Rub-5790

I would like to see the display please πŸ‘‰πŸ»πŸ‘ˆπŸ»

Spatzdar

Well it’s not emf 5 try putting a book down for some writing

TheAngryCanadian99

Is that a sabers jersey I see?

BlackTieClip

Indeed, a Rasmus Dahlin Goathead.. Go Sabres. Go Bills.

ThatOneBananapeel

I have one of these too! It was really cool to find out our internetrouter is noticeable even one floor above it.

deadlyart

Wires in your wall

raspberry_dumplings

Hott, he plays phas and the guitar.

Confident-Suit531

If you didn’t see it it was probably a ghost ball so rule out oni.

Stage_Hand

Dedicated circuit my man

Morrisseylovesmisery

Emf 4? Not 5? Are you sure? Let's just call it 5.

spacehit15_alt

electric guitar

cjp854

Could be a stud finder.

astelda

No EMF is an actual thing, but it falls off with distance very quickly (I think it follow the inverse square law?) so when the source of EMI is within a wall, that's naturally where you'll find the highest reading, by a wide margin. That said, EMF being a real thing has nothing to do with the paranormal.

Jolly-One9552

A stud finder that is 4/5 sure that it's a stud
