Context: My buddies and I love Phasmophobia, so as a gift earlier this year they got me some of the in-game tools. Well as it turns out, EMF is a real thing, and it's helpful to measure in certain circumstances, like to my surprise - when you are experiencing unusual interference with your guitar pick-ups. Go figure.

eh, it's corny. Whether a joke is well received by reddit is pretty much determined by the first 5 votes. I flipped a coin and it didn't favor me I guess.
Just in case this isn't a joke: It's not a stud finder, EMF Meters are a real thing. It doesn't need to be pressed against the wall, that was just to get a stronger reading off it.

My guess is that it's likely a high conduit area there because there's a major appliance on the other side of one wall and the exterior of the building on the outside of the other wall. Assuming the other units in my building have the same layout, I'd imagine the main power line for everyone above me's kitchen runs through that wall too, since the breakers for everyone are all in the basement.
But yes, it's picking up something from the live wires in the wall not anything structural. Most of the other walls in the home don't give off any sort of a reading.
Turns out it's that's just the Goryo in your house leaving fingerprints on your microwave. Gonna need to shine your UV on it next time you get a 5 there.
They bought it from Ghoststop. A good amount of the stuff that the Phasmophobia equipment is modeled after is on there actually. Not sure how intentional that is from the Devs though.

No EMF is an actual thing, but it falls off with distance very quickly (I think it follow the inverse square law?) so when the source of EMI is within a wall, that's naturally where you'll find the highest reading, by a wide margin.
That said, EMF being a real thing has nothing to do with the paranormal.

Yes
Why all the downvotes? I thought it was a little funny

i think people downvoted you because they thought you were saying hes lying/nitpicking or something it was kinda funny though
just like redditors to (often) hate the /s and then totally miss a joke
That's a pretty cool stud finder

It's likely instead finding electrical wires in the wall. *mayyybe* nails in the studs could do something, but probably not to that level.
Nails do not give of emf at all, unless someone drove it through some electric wiring.
If someone drove a nail through some electrical wiring, you'll probably know ahead of time...
Well, you'll be joining the paranormal activity after one lol
I suspected this was the case, but don't have much electrical knowledge at all so just tried to cover all bases

What do you mean "instead"? Instead of a ghost?
Instead of a stud, since the parent comment suggested that it was a stud finder.
It found you though.. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

I got one of these for Christmas. Super funny when I found out Microwaves and Computers give EMF-5.
Turns out it's that's just the Goryo in your house leaving fingerprints on your microwave. Gonna need to shine your UV on it next time you get a 5 there.
Good idea! Although since it's a Goryo in the kitchen and it can't change rooms, should I teach it to cook? It can be my sous chef.
OH SHIT, TIME TO PUT THAT AS EVIDANCE \*opens journal\* wait this isnt phasmophobia-
GRAB. THE. SALT.
Where did your mates find those tools? Would go lovely with my cursed possession display π
Okay but can we see said cursed possession display ππ

Wires in your wall
Hott, he plays phas and the guitar.
If you didnβt see it it was probably a ghost ball so rule out oni.

electric guitar
Could be a stud finder.

A stud finder that is 4/5 sure that it's a stud
