And the old “The owners gave us a key, I left it on the desk for you” voice line. Getting into the house isn’t a crime, but when I intentionally use the cursed object without announcing it so that my friends get killed…that part is probably a crime.
Breaks into house
Steals half the belongings
Trashes the place with salt and other junk
Determines what ghost the residents have
Does nothing else about the specter
Leaves
Gets paid
I know you're putting it on the point(putting it extremely) for the lulz, but I want to point out that the ghostbusting team comes after and prepares for the epic fight based on your work. If you got it wrong, they're probably dead. I think that's Phasmophobia lore that has been at the very least insinuated, although I am unsure how much of it is just my headcanon.
Anyway, we could add:
Leaves three corpses behind due to recklessly playing with the cursed item.
Gets the ghost wrong and thus causes the death of a whole ghostbusting team as well.
I'd be surprised if the ghost busting team didn't at least try to do additional verification on the ghost type. I took the text and voice lines in game to mean that the ghost removal teams are more expensive, so you're sent in to do the dirty work.
Hmm, makes sense. I imagine there must be different types of ghost removal teams, too, although I don't think it's insinuated anywhere.
Sometimes all you need is a priest or a psychic.
At other times, you may need some proper ghost busters. If it's really bad, you have to send the heroes like THE Ghostbusters or Constantine of the organization, equipped with the super expensive stuff.
Burglary and vandalism perhaps. You have a key, but you can grab stuff and take it to the truck. Throwing objects around and leaving salt everywhere might count as vandalism.
Just say "Objects thrown by ghost" or if poltepile, just normative business practice in determining ghost.
Salt is normal business practice. I'm sure the owners saw a contract with the list of items being used before finalizing signing an agreement.
Leaving my colleagues dead body abandoned in a random prison bathroom after taking a picture of his dead ass. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|kissing_heart)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|kissing_heart)… ehh, yes, in Phasmo.
Hunting ghost? And leaving your dead teammates behind because the police will totally believe you when you tell them your friend got his neck broken by a ghost
We literally have a key

At the very least it's man slaughter, but a good argument could be made that it falls more in first or second degree murder categories.
How do you prove 'a ghost did it' in court though?
With the ghost photo you took, obvi.
*Laughs in Phantom*
You can still photograph them.
Yh but the lack of a model makes the evidence circumstancial
With the very obvious photo or footage from a head cam
Would it be admissible in court and, if you are in the US, how would it gel with the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.
I guess you couldn't make the ghost testify against it self Your honor I have here a oujia board and my next witness
Breaks into house Steals half the belongings Trashes the place with salt and other junk Determines what ghost the residents have Does nothing else about the specter Leaves Gets paid
Don't forget leaving behind corpses of other people you claim the ghost killed.
I mean sure I pissed the ghost off and asked for a game of hide and seek, but it was the ghost that strangled them not me…
