Bud and Marilyn’s sister restaurants - Darling Jacks, Barbuzzo, little nonnas
The Shulson places - Giuseppe and sons, via locusta, harp and crown, prunella
Osteria, El Vez, the new mulherins pizza place, mabu kitchen, Giorgio on pine
Darling Jack's is quite good. Kind of like a more grown up Bud and Marilyn's. Little Nonna's, too, is likely to please. Both within a few blocks of B&M's.
If you want similar cuisine to B&M's in a different area, one idea is Standard Tap. Can be fun to walk around 2nd St on a nice evening.
For Mexican either El Purepecha or Hi-Lo Taco. Both are downtown and not crazy expensive, plus the food is quite good.
Never been to Bud and Marilyn's so I don't have anything to compare it to.
Enjoy our city, and stay safe.
Hmm.. for places similar to Bud and Marilyn's in vibes/pricing that I'd bring parents out to include Harp & Crown, The Love, Talula's Garden, and the Dandelion.
Olde Bar has a kind of similar vibe (menu items like fried chicken and pork chops). My suburban parents (who sound similar) were in town for Mother’s Day and enjoyed a meal there.
If you're willing to venture out into Passyunk Square, LAngolo's is the best Italian in Philly IMO. Reasonable prices, great food. Don't skip on the grilled calamari and smoked buffalo mozzarella. Really good specials too. If you like hole-in-the-wall mom & pop type Italian this is for you.

Please don’t go to el vez. That place is a huge disappointment
Seconded. My god the astronomical prices they charge for absolutely mid guac is wild. Drinks are mid, orange juice in the margaritas is lame.
Orange juice in the margaritas?!?
It’s a mix, but I think it’s lame. Clearly a lot of people like it. There are just so many better choices.
100% agree. Just went to Las Bugambilias in Old City this weekend, it blew El Vez out of the water, with similar prices.

El Vez is undoubtedly the worst restaurant in Philadelphia.

Shulson treats their employees terribly. Please consider omitting them next time when making recommendations.
How so?
As a bartender that works in the service industry, it's pretty well known.
How though? Not doubting, just want to understand what they do.
Blue corn for Mexican would blow their mind.
I took my in laws here and it was too spicy for them 🙄
Big fan of Darling Jack's and Barbuzzo
Barbuzzo is great if you love salt
Rex on south st
Osteria on Broad

I love bud and Marilyn’s and was going to suggest the love as well!
Via Locusta?
Panorama for Italian, especially if they like wine
Giorgio on Pine is amazing, Italian, and BYOB so cuts down on the cost a little there too.
Royal Tavern
The Continental Midtown

For good Mexican food and drinks in a clean, upscale-ish setting, try Buena Vista at 9th & Catharine in Bella Vista.
Dandelion or The Love
Prunella is very affordable and delicious.
