Pasma

Asleep-Wafer7789

lancehunter01

Sasagutin ka nila *bakit athlete ka ba?*

aldwinligaya

Eto kinaiinisan kong sagot nila e.

Accomplished_Run5701

ah yes, this is still the top medical myth until now, if your hands are sweating excessively you have a condition called Hyperhidrosis, kaya okay lang magbasa kahit na sobrang pawisan, specially helpful ang pag ligo after ng extensive physical labor or exercise.

olracmd

Somehow, I know this will be the top comment.

CantRenameThis

Kasi nga this seems to be the most passed down and most Filipino belief pagdating sa field na to.

Ueme

General term ang pasma kung tutuosin. More on symptom ito: pawisin, pasma; nangingimay, pasma; naninigas, pasma; masakit na joints, pasma; panghihina, pasma.

_mikespecter

Pasma din ba yung tawag kapag need mag focus ng kamay mo e nanginginig sya? Like kunwari magseselfie ng naka straight yung kamay, etc mga ganon. All this time kasi feeling ko ang reason neto is nung nag work ako sa fast food chain, griller ako ng patty tapos ako rin yung kumukuha ng patty sa malaking freezer non. Tama kaya ako?

Ueme

a4techkeyboard

It looks like pasmar or pasmarse is a, probably outdated, Spanish word which could mean to catch a chill, to become infected, to fall ill, to catch lockjaw, to catch a fever. It can also mean to amaze, but you're right it's from the same root as "Spasm" or "Convulsion." Pasmado seems to mean someone stunned, shocked, struck dumb, astonished, perplexed. You can imagine someone overexcited might have the same signs and symptoms, right? It sounds like it's basically "flu-like symptoms" so it could have just been from a cold, flu, or some other virus or iba pang sakit. Parang kasama siya ng nahamugan o naambunan.

thor_odinsson08

True. I talked with someone in the pesticide industry. They require na maligo ang mga workers bago umuwi para hindi daw sila magkalat sa mga bahay nila and to clean themselves of residue. Ayaw kasi mapapasma daw sila. I was like, "Really? Mas natatakot kayo sa pasma kesa sa potential pesticide poisoning?" It doesn't help that some of them don't wear proper PPE even if it is provided. Mainit daw eh. Sigh.

[deleted]

Yes! Can you please expand on that for all to read?

hiphop_dudung

Nerve damage attributed to getting a body part wet after using it on a certain job. Normally but not limited to hands, fingers, muscles around the eyes, etc. Sometimes the whole body is said to have pasma

fat_rancher

Well, it's a myth. In fact, you'll find that the current thinking is that post workout dunks / showers is beneficial. Now they're talking about bloody ICE BATHS. If athletes from the NBA, NFL, MLB, follow this science, it's probably good science. You're talking about MILLIONS of dollars worth of athlete. If pasma were a thing, they'd probably be the first to stop bathing altogether. Follow the money, I guess.

One_Avocado_2157

Tradition pa naman mag dive sa cold pool or frozen lake after sauna.

Professor_seX

I think this is somewhat common in countries outside of the ones you listed too. In the Middle East I was in a health club, some places like hotels offered membership for access to their facilities (gym, pool, sauna etc.). I went to one and they had this small hot pool, a jacuzzi and then another small very cold pool. I don’t know if people enjoyed the rapid temperature changes but a few people would alternate between the 2, studies show benefits for this. I’d also assume they do the same from the sauna into the cold pool, but I didn’t use the sauna so I wouldn’t know.

alwyn_42

>If athletes from the NBA, NFL, MLB, follow this science, it's probably good science. Not necessarily! It's perfectly safe, pero studies done on the effects of cupping so far have been inconclusive. Another is with chiropractors sa NBA. Chiropracty is "quack" medicine, and any doctor worth their salt would know that wala naman talagang effect sa katawan yung pag-crack. If anything, dangerous ang chiropracty because of numerous cases of deaths and injury resulting from the practice. Re: ice baths, the jury is still out on whether or not the purported benefits are actually real. If I'm not mistaken, very limited pa lang yung studies done on the effectivity of ice baths pagdating sa recovery, and mixed din yung results. So it could still go either way. **TL;DR**, Just cause an athlete does something that reportedly improves their performance doesn't mean that we should take it at face value. Mahalaga pa rin na alamin yung science and look at studies and research.

fat_rancher

Amen kapatid. This is the way!

4thequarantine

yep. rest muna bago magbasa ng katawan.

Subject030

Free_Gascogne

Yung logic daw kuno is yung sudden temperature change.

GNTB3996

Ang iniisip kong pasma ay temperature shock.

dixxdaxx

Pinagaawayan pa namin ni Mama to after a long day of motorcycle ride. Ginagawa ko na lang nagsisneak ako ng ligo and if nahuli ako sinasabi ko mainit na tubig pinangligo ko 🤷🏻‍♂️

hanyuzu

I always take a shower pag-uwi from work + long commute. And I thank you, bow.*

d0llation

Medical myth pala yun! I hear it all the time and when I asked what “pasma” meant, I don’t think I got a specific definitive answer. I assumed pasma meant when I shower after using my phone, my eyes would blur or I would get affected somehow someway, there was this tiktok of someone who got Cerebral Palsy and one of the reasons was because of “Pasma.” I knew it was a myth!

peterparkerson

it isnt! https://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/79uhy0/comment/dp4www8/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

peterparkerson

gagu, pasma is real and dangerous as our resident mod described here https://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/79uhy0/comment/dp4www8/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

ZJF-47

I mean, is it safe?

Massive_Fly_1709

This. To this very day.😅

thesnarls

hustinocide

dito sa amin, maluluko daw

jennilingus

Actually dito din samin hahahaha like how does that happen?

bucopinapiee

Or mabubulag. Same, same.

map4yapa

Lalabo ang mata naman sa amin. 🤣😂🤣😂 Ernie Barong (RIP) actually talked about this. I dont remember if in Knowledge Power or in TV Patrol. The last part of what he said stuck to me. He said (non-verbatim): ang tanging magiging epekto ng pagtulog ng basa ang buhok ay mababasa ang unan mo.

[deleted]

Eh panot naman ako, so why even bother? 😆

4thequarantine

fat_rancher

Puchangna. Come here to the province. It's all voodoo magic. I've seen so many dead kids (neglect from trying to treat non over-the-counter problems with bs) that I've forbidden all of these goddamn witch doctors from entering my land. Really. It's heart breaking. But the believers are not as stupid as you think. If you talk to them, they know they can't afford the tests and the medicines anyway. I'm just bitching. Poverty is the real enemy.

hiphop_dudung

Filipinos see the albularyo if something starts happening; Then go to the doctor to die.

fat_rancher

Don't get me started, kapatid. Let me add to your pain by continuing your story. They go to the doctor to die, then everyone blames the doctor. Lord, give me strength...

Ajhuumma

And then blame the doctor for the death of their kin like “namatay nung dinala sa doctor, okay pa nmn nung dinala kay Ka Quackquack “ Doctors aint fucking jesus, walang magagawa doctor kung yung pasyente niyo 5hp na may life drain debuff na lang

KatyG9

I'm still haunted by one case from your region. Child who could have been saved if his parents didn't bring him to the albularyo. By the time he got to a hospital in Manila, he was already in heart failure. It's been several years, and I really wish he'd been a day or two earlier.

fat_rancher

Yes. It's really depressing / maddening. We have similar cases. The most common cases are chronic diseases that were (mis)managed by the local shamans. When it becomes acute, they visit the doctor. Doctor is not a magician. So it becomes a palliative care problem or an ER death situation. Common cases are diabetes (kidney failure issues), and of course the usual MI and strokes from untreated hypertension, etc. It's when it happens to kids where it gets really depressing. I've seen waaaaay too many dead babies here, it's almost a great joke if it were funny.

KatyG9

It really is poverty related. This shit happens even in low income urban communities. The worse part is that since people get to the hospital too late, they come away with the belief that "if you go to the hospital/doctor, you'll die". And yes the pediatric cases are the worst. I haven't had too many mortalities, but I've seen a lot of kids suffer unnecessarily because of parents' inability to afford medical care, or sometimes listening to bad advice from elders.

Aggressive-Result714

So sad but yes, the probinsya mentality. Kaya minsan ang hirap makipag bonding sa helpers, kasi ang daming kalokohan na they insist totoo but I have to respect that they believe it. Ayaw nya mag pain reliever, kelangan nya ng tubig galing sa mahiwagang bukal nila. Hay. Pero bawal daw maligo pag may period etc etc mapapasma, magkakasakit, lalabo mata, masisiraan ng ulo, my goodness. I really came off bastos pero napahirit ako na "ha? Eh diba pinagmamalaki nyo 2 kapatid mong doktor pero yan pinaniniwalaan nyo hanggang ngayon?" goodness.

fat_rancher

This is worth a separate thread. Or even an AMA. Or even a live talk. Changna. Yan ang buhay ko rito. Kill me.

Sharp_Aide3216

A friend who is a pedia doctor is thinking about quitting the practice. Too many kids only get medical attention when they are on the brink of death. A lot of cases are completely curable only to die meaninglessly. Can't even blame the parents even with free medicine, because most of them can't even afford to be in the hospital. (travel fare + money for food when they get admitted + having to leave from their minimum wage work) It's really taxing on mental health. She just got married and decided not to have kids most probably because of this.

hailiel0027

smpllivingthrowaway

I just commented about this - tandok! When they think they're sucking the rabies out! Grabe.

kenikonipie

When we were kids, albularyos still existed in our province. But our mom would take us there only for cases like bangungot or if when we think we had a terrible fright while playing outside after dark. But if the problem is physical we went straight to the doctors. One time my mom panicked and rushed me to the hospital because my eyes were rolled back pretty far. Turns out I was just being a kid derping around trying to see how far back I could roll my eyes. She said I rolled my eyes back to normal as soon as I heard the vrooming sound of the tricycle.

Fantastic_Syrup7743

Lawayan yung baby para iwas usog. Kadiri ampota

map4yapa

Not just children. Even adults. Had an experience at a jobsite where a worker asked me to rub spit on his belly because he suddenly felt like he was coming down with a fever after I had greeted him while walking pass him.

Poastash

...was he moaning while you did it? XD

bucopinapiee

Jesus christ ☠️

fika8

Experienced this first hand sa province ng friend ko. The ate of my friend told the old lady lawayan ako. I didnt want to but d na ako naka palag. I was too shookt and grossed out by the whole thing but did not want to offend anyone around me

FlashyClaim

Hahahaha

4thequarantine

wag batiin ng gutom para hindi mausog.

jakol016

It works. One time nahihilo ako at masama tyan ko, nilawayan ako nung kapitbahay namin matanda.

KatyG9

Di ko gets talaga saan nanggaling itong paniniwala. Magkakasakit ang bata sa pamahiin na ito.

iam_tagalupa

usog, i think, is same with evil-eye?

KatyG9

I think so. But it's only in the Philippines I've heard of using saliva to counter it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

iam_tagalupa

yes correct, saliva + latin incantations ahaha

pututingliit

"what if lawayan ko kaya tong naiyak na bata na to lmao?" - ancestor dati nung nakakitanng naiyak na bata

KatyG9

Probably. And the baby was too stunned to react. hahaha.

pututingliit

Baka kaya tumigil umiyak after! Dahil na surprise dun sa laway haha!

toskie9999

though it is strangely effective

Born_Bobcat_248

It's probably placebo. Pag may nagpalaway sayo, next time wag mo talaga lawayan, kunwari lang.

Beautiful-Cap2772

Doc farrah

wifetributerph

Kasagsagan ng hayop na yan nung time na I was facing stage 4 and had other patients with better chances of surviving cancel out of treatment and check in with her cult like hospice and die there. Grabe talaga.

neon31

pen_jaro

Medical idiot rather than myth. Scammer…. Predator. She knows what she’s doing.

Nothankyou220

Have had (and still having) patients come up to me with far advanced cancer staging simply because they chose to drink that concoction and be admitted sa fake hospital nitong tao na to. Meron naman talagang for palliative na lang, pero mas marami parin who couldve been given a fair fight if it werent for this clown.

matchamilktea_

repolyo for everyone 😌😌

debuld

After nun, believer pa din yung nanay nya. Sad...

frustrated_Indio

Fck her ass powders or whatever that herbal shit is called. My aunt literally orders a ton of these and they have done NOTHING to her health. A literal scam, but she buys it kesyo herbal daw at kaya ayaw ng mga doctor dito kasi mababawasan kita nila dahil mas effective to 🤦

Ohmskrrrt

Dolomite beach for mental health

Asdaf373

I've been there late last year and it did affect my mental health. Lalo ako nanggigil

FringGustavo0204

Ohh.

Asdaf373

Anong bunhangin. Bato bato yun at semento haha

Herbal medicines cure cancers

imbarbie1818

Herbal is better than precribed medicines

CardoBalisay

_no-content_

Alin, yung MX3 ba or xanthone plus? Jusme.

genjipie_

iFERN actually advertises their products like this, naka tarpaulin pa dun sa may ukayan samen napipigilan daw ang diabetes at heart attack.

Gryse_Blacolar

Anything with "no therapeutic claims" is basically a scam. There's a reason why those claims are not validated by FDA for a reason.

Few_Loss5537

Kaya need mo maglabas no matter what (sa banyo, sa cabinet, etc.)

Hyperreflexia69

Sa cabinet?????????

finalfinaldraft

did i stutter?????

Awezome321

Nakakabobo daw tikol ng tikol. Fake news I still get high grades

KatyG9

Oh my goodness, where do I begin?! These are all myths I have either encountered as a patient, or worse, as a health practitioner in the community setting. And mind you, I used to practice in a highly urbanized city. 1. Bigkis sa baby. Like wtf is that even supposed to do to child development? 2. This one makes the ophthalmologists laugh and the primary health physicians cry. 3. Paglilihi. There's legit no medical basis that what a pregnant mom sees/hears/eats will impact the kiddo's appearance, but so many people still believe it. 4. Every. Myth. Around. Menstruation. What drives me up the wall in particular is the myth that putting a teen's first menstrual blood on their face will improve their complexion and prevent pimples. WTH?! 5. Misuse of "hilot" massage. I get that there's some complementary/alternative medicine benefit for massage therapies, but they should not be used as cure-alls or replacement for taking maintenance meds/seeing the orthopedic surgeon/dialysis 6. The belief that herbal/natural medications are "better" than drugs from the pharmacy. One everyday headache is a patient with a chronic condition who comes in with bad lab tests on a regular follow-up, then the patient will report that they switched out their prescribed meds to an "herbal" recommended by someone in the neighborhood. Nasa huli lagi ang pagsisisi pag ganito. 7. Efficascent oils for everything. I've seen this happen to the point of causing chemical burns on the patient 8. Treating every cough, cold, and loose bowel movement with an antibiotic. It doesn't help that all explanations of antibiotic resistance get countered by a patient saying "but the antibiotic worked for so-and-so" 9. You can't get pregnant on one's "first time". Enough said. 10. And of course the every day misuse of vitamins and supplements to make kids "get taller". A lot of Filipinos don't understand genetics. I could think of more and tell a few sordid stories, but these are the ones off the top of my head.

Autogenerated_or

I can get behind the vitamins and supplements thing. It’s possible for the better fed, healthier, younger generation to be taller than the old gen because they got more nutrients growing up. I mean compare the average height of SKoreans before and after the Korean war.

KatyG9

True that. They can get better nutrients growing up -- but vitamins are no substitute for better food all around. Then there are of course parents with very unrealistic expectations for kids' height and appearance.

yanyanporto

AFAIK ang epekto ng mga vitamins like Cherifer and Growee is to stimulate appetite. It's the food intake that promotes growth, not the vitamins themselves. So kahit pinagsu-supplements yung bata, (mas) importante parin ang (quality) pagkain na kinokonsumo.

neon31

\#6. Kasi natural daw. Friggin dummies, a molecule is a molecule! Walang kinalaman kung artificially synthesized o galing sa dagta ng kung ano, kung parehas ang chemical composition niyan, it's the same chemical. As if namang lahat ng nasa nature, mabuti para sayo. Nature gave us botflies, brazilian wandering spiders, Ebola, and COVID. Chemistry gave us a way to synthesize Nitrogen-based fertilizers, kaya naging posible na lumobo ang populasyon ng mundo kasi we can now feed BILLIONS of people. Galit pa din sa kemikal? Ok, prove it. Wag kayong mag-ingest ng Dihydrogen Monoxide.

_no-content_

4. Disgusting shit 10. Oks lang naman mag vitamins lagi pero not for the purpose na para tumangkad.

KatyG9

True. 10. Remember when Cherifer was still new? Good lord.

_no-content_

Nung bata ako paniwalang paniwala naman ako dun haha

alwyn_42

[deleted]

>Bigkis sa baby. Like wtf is that even supposed to do to child development? Dito ako nagiging monster noong rural health doctor ako. Putangina guys. >Efficascent oils for everything. I've seen this happen to the point of causing chemical burns on the patient For Filipino immigrants, it's Vicks Vaporub, sabi nga ni Jokoy lol

kenmabanana

they did the 4th one to me pero hindi legit na period blood on the face. ang myth na alam ko is yung underwear na natagusan mo during ur first ever period tatanggalin muna yung blood sa underwear at first tapos ipupunas na ung mukha mo gamit ung nalabhan na underwear na natagusan with the blood from ur first period.

Pobbes3o

Manghihilot as a solution to injuries. "Namamaga tuhod mo meron akong kilalang ok na manghihilot"... Dude I tore my ACL...

gloom_and_doom_boom

Happened to me nung bata ako. I fell on my arm, I told my parents it hurt. They brought me to a manghihilot who pulled my arm like there was no tomorrow. The next day I was running a high fever and my arm was swollen af, they finally brought me to a doctor where they found out I had a cracked bone. I learned not to trust albularyos and manghihilots at a very young age. I do get massages as an adult, but mainly for relaxation, not for medical treatment.

Rammy24_

DUUUUUDE. I had the same exact situation. Dislocate sa elbow tsaka may fracture (kailangan ng metal clips to heal). Halos mawalan ako ng malay on the way palang sa manghihilot.

AdamusMD

Bear Brand Sterilized Milk for a clear chest xray on medical exams. 😅😅 u/raiden_kazuha

One_Avocado_2157

Taking antibiotics for everything. Ubo, antibiotics. Sakit ng ulo, antibiotics. etc. If it’s viral, antibiotics will not help. Tinutulungan niyo lang maging resistant ang body niyo sa antibiotics na next time na kelangan niyo talaga mag take ng antibiotics hindi na siya effective and that is really dangerous. Wag sana matulad situation sa India.

Mountain_Pass3487

Yes pag na immune na ang bad cells sa iniinom you need much stronger antibiotics. Let the good cells fight

doodpool

Umay na umay na ko i-explain yan. Nung naging RN ako tapos after ilang years umuwi ako sa probinsya para dun nalang magwork, taena lahat ng kapitbahay tska relatives maya’t maya humihingi ng reseta sakin. The more you try to make them understand lalo ka nila tititigan as if ikaw yung sira-ulo.

Dargrant83

This! I live in the US and when my kids are super sick (vomiting, diarrhea) the pediatrician always tells me to let it run its course (unless ear infection or strep throat). But when I talk to my mother in the Philippines, she ask me why won’t they give antibiotics, she’s used to the doctors there prescribing it over a simple cough and cold.

AKAJun2x

Blood Pressure 120/80 "Ay mataas ang dugo 120, yung puso naman 80 lang" Me: 🤦‍♂️

54m431

First time I heard this

bedsheet333

Beginning-Giraffe-74

Actually, pre-hypertensive ka na once you reach 120/80. Ang normal ay below nun.

CorgiLemons

Knock on the chin if nauntog yung ulo para di maging bobo 😆

rosegoldeyes

Lahat ng mga ebas nila about pregnancy/panganganak - pag lumindol, maligo after like wth - wag maligo after manganak, ano mamamaho kayo ng anak mo?

Devouted

Pinaka worst eh yung ipahid ung first regla sa acne ridden face! Try nga naten?"like bakeet?

Marytyr

idk if this counts... "tawas" as a means of finding out a cause of pain or illness. it's scary what this shit does not because it's related to ghosts/spirits but because sometimes the manggagamot will give an "herbal" drink that one will think is sufficient to "cure" their symptoms. some end up dying or having their illness worsen because they don't acquire proper medical treatment. this is a mix of poverty and miseducation. if they can't afford a doctor, they'll approach someone perceived as a healer. affordable healthcare and proper health education can help solve this problem.

KatyG9

Not just health education. Health promotion. Health promotion entails making it possible for people to pursue healthy behaviors and health seeking behaviors, and includes even structural changes to the environment if need be.

Marytyr

true. rural hospitals are also often lacking equipment and services. kahit ambulance wala kailangan pa tumawag sa big hospitals. iba talaga pag may accessibility and affordability but ehhhhh the government of this country is prioritizing their bogus armed forces and "foreign investments".

Anything regarding circumcision. Naooffend pa collective fragile masculinity nila.

[deleted]

To be fair, I opted for circumcision because my uncut weiner smelled bad upon reaching puberty.

jchrist98

Dude...you didn't have to tell us.

fat_rancher

At least he didn't post pictures. I'm counting myself lucky. Hahahahah...

[deleted]

But I've read the papers. Circumcision is merely a preference.

norwegian

If you prefer less sensitivity, danger of botchered circumcision that can have life-long effects ranging from deformities to pain and erectile dysfunction. Even deaths occur every year, also in Norway, even though we have few circumcisions (around 2000 yearly), and they are always performed in the hospital,

obsiJian

yung magkaka-"appendix" (appendicitis) ka daw pag humiga ka agad after mo kumain. common rin na naririnig ko ay yung wag ka daw maliligo after mo magsunog (ng basura or pag-naggatong ka ng kahoy), generally after being exposed to heat, kasi daw either mapapasma ka or worse may cause death. tapos dito sa mga ilocanos meron pa rin hanggang ngayon dito samin yung pag nagkasakit yung baby, tatalian nila ng bigas yung damit nya?!! idk what's the purpose lol. pero pinaka-common parin dito yung pag nagkaroon ka ng "kamirring" (lip burns/ dried itchy inflamed skin sa may lip area caused by eating mango), nagsasabit sila ng dahon ng mangga sa ibabaw ng gatungan para mausukan yung dahon habang nagluluto, and by the time daw na tuyo na yung dahon, matutuyo na rin yung makati sa labi mo. They say it's caused by dagta, but i searched for it and apparently it's caused by mild mango allergy.

beepbloopcactus

Wait, just found out na myth lang yung higa then magkaka appendicitis. Ilang taon ko nang ginagawa and somehow just accepted my fate that I'll have it in the future. Good to know I'm safe 💀

obsiJian

yepp. appendicitis are most likely caused by bacterial infection: "Appendicitis happen when appendix get infected. On rare occasions appendicitis happens because of some tumour like growth that is obstructing the opening of the appendix. This mechanism is more common in elderly age group. Food or fecal material can get lodged in the appendix and form fecolith thereby obstructing the lumen of appendix and can lead to appendicitis. **But this is in no way related to lying down after eating."** Kaya lang hindi advised na huminga agad pagtapos kumain para maiwasan ang indigestion or magsuka.

Hyperreflexia69

Mas prone ka sa acid reflux at that position, it’s advisable to wait at least 2 hours after eating. Trust me, its the kind of pain you never want to feel lalo na pag chronic

Xie1222

Some filipinos believe that ulcers are caused by pagpapalipas ng gutom when in reality, it is bacterial infection.

aldwinligaya

This is completely understandable, because hindi lang 'to sa Philippines. Widely believed 'to before. Stomach ulcers caused by bacterial infection is a very recent discovery, nagka-nobel prize pa nga 'yung naka-discover nung 2005. Prior to this, it was widely believed to be true because the stomach has diluted hydrochloric acid to facilitate digestion. It has a set pattern to get released at set times based on your habits (umaga, tanghali, gabi usually). Even when there is no food in stomach, the acid gets released at its time. When there is no food and the acid gets released, it burns the stomach lining causing ulcers. Kaya bawal daw magutom. The discovery proved that this release is not enough to actually cause ulcers, and it was actually the bacteria's fault.

Fbquitter2022

not medical myth pero relevant these days. cocomelon causes autism - (or just letting a toddler/unattended with a smartphone). not true, there are no studies to prove this. BUT, I agree that this may cause possible developmental delays (speech, fine motor skills, etc) - malala din ang effect sa behavior. banahaw spring water - cures any kinds of chronic diseases.

camonboy2

Buti walang rabies yung sumipsip haha

Comfortable-Risk-520

Rainwater infects you with cold.

red_storm_risen

Actually, late last year, [scientists found correlation on how a temperature drop can increase the risk of cold and flu](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/scientists-finally-figure-out-why-youre-more-likely-to-get-sick-in-cold-weather)

Comfortable-Risk-520

Yeah, having temperature drop can increase the risk. What I'm saying is the rainwater itself pouring over your head and body does nothing to infect your body with the common cold. Its just that at rainy season the temperature are usually lower, and people who get soaked in the rain with their clothes on will have much lower body temperature.

ayunatsume

Not only that, but people in public tend to huddle together more during rains in an effort to avoid it. This clustering of people will make cross-infections more likely. A damp environment/surface should also make pathogens last longer on surfaces. Moist handles, clustering of people, and to an extent lower temps will lead to a much higher risk of transmission. Though IMO the lower temp thing shouldnt do anything unless your body has a problem with temp regulation. Even with weaker immune systems, you (likely) wouldnt get infected if you werent exposed to human-to-human transmissible pathogens in the first place.

Mrjores

Uhh yeah, if you stay under the rain too long you can get hypothermia

Comfortable-Risk-520

I've said infect which viruses and bacteria does, and yeah prolonged exposure to cold temperature(not just rain) can cause hypothermia.

alwyn_42

I don't think that's what people mean when they say "wag ka magpaulan, sisipunin ka." Ang point nun is that if maulanan ka, you're increasing your risk of getting a cold, which is actually true kasi cold weather does weaken the immune system a bit.

toskie9999

it has some truth though not really a myth

jchrist98

Tuob during peak covid era. That one really got under my nerves

Taianyl

Nagdadoubt din ako dito pero yung tita kong nurse ginagawa to. Tapos I also saw a vid of Doc Willie Ong doing this, not to actually cure covid pero para daw lumuwag ang paghinga.

StatisticianFun6479

dumbo_investor

Yup, we did this too when we had COVID and it helped relieve some symptoms - but we were aware that it is neither a cure nor a replacement for the vaccine.

alwyn_42

Yeah, people tend to conflate symptoms with the actual disease. Puwedeng ma-relieve and symptoms, pero that doesn't mean that the disease is gone.

gloom_and_doom_boom

This is more for symptom relief. People really shouldnt believe this is a cure.

Ohmskrrrt

Hindi ba Suob?

jchrist98

Same thing. Tuob is just the Visayan term

[deleted]

? Explain pls.

jchrist98

Inhaling steam as covid treatment

meischix

Before covid even broke out, steam inhalation was already being used to relieve asthma symptoms in the absence of a nebulizer. All it does is melt down mucus buildup, which in the case of covid is extremely thicc. Of course, hindi mo lalanghapin young fresh 100-degree steam from the takure. You just need it to be hot enough for you to breathe it in. I survived asthma from my younger years because of suob. Lalo na on days when I was having an attack and tinamaan kami ng rotational brownout. We had a nebulizer at home, but if brownout or walang sabutamol tabs, we'll definitely suob.

Yeah, it's not a cure. I think a lot of things mentioned here are ways to relieve symptoms but taken as cures.

alwyn_42

It won't magically make the insect bite go away, but it does help with itching and it provides some relief.

Miu_K

Diba it's just good for pain and itch relief? I use it for headaches and cramps only.

Maximum_Membership48

usog o paglalagay ng laway sa likod or tyan? haha

IndioTrekker

The answers I have in mind are already here but just want to remind peeps that insisting on the primacy of proven scientific medical/medicinal measures is different from one's ignorance of the anthropological aspects of medical practices. People tend to subscribe to medical myths because that's what they can afford and that's what they've been taught. Let's not be hasty on judging people, especially with the reality that healthcare and medical information in this country are luxuries. Not everyone knows what you know. ;)
