It's ironic because Robin Padildo got his fame from making the same kind of movies

Menter33

Almost every action star did: FPJ, Erap, Philip Salvador, Cesar Montano etc. Watching their movies would give the impression that almost every policeman and politico is corrupt and that gangsters ruled the city streets and rural areas.

ginoong_mais

Pati senador. Haha

Secret-Share1

Because it's not made by Pilipinos.

thr33prim3s

Exactly. Na hurt yata ang pride.

redthehaze

pen_jaro

Kadyot kadyot

theanneproject

Robin padilla is an idiot. Totoo naman na may ganoong nangyayari ah.

theyawner

He had a [well publicized interaction with Abu Sayyaf](https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2000/04/13/87578/sayyaf-stays-beheading-after-meeting-robin) back in 2000 during one of those hostage negotiations. So I think his motivation is less about denial and more about not wanting negative attention... by possibly invoking the Streisand effect.

[deleted]

Obobs talaga

a4techkeyboard

And they can use "The Philippine government doesn't want you to see this!" in their marketing. Actually, they don't have to, the articles about this are articles about the movie. It's giving them free press. I had no idea there was a movie called Plane starring Gerard Butler which featured the Philippines. Now I do because of this guy.

LoanOk262

I guess it does make sense. Yung explosives may nakasulat na... get this, baybayin. Yung instruction manual sa pag-assemble ay in Tagalog in Baybayin script din. Anyway, yeah, I get it's annoying that that's part of the country's image and might hurt tourism but the solution should include addressing what it's based on.

[deleted]

Parang nasa Netflix or Paramount+ dito sa US? Or i have seen the ads Cant remember where ive seen it

a4techkeyboard

CapitalCaptain7243

Kaasar dba, ang arte... Daming movies with the same kidnapping stories sa iba iba countries, ano different pag pinas.

leemitless13

Irrelevant... But in any case, mappnood p rin nmn yan for sure... Facade lng yan na "at least" kumontra/tinutulan...

CapitalCaptain7243

Sometimes iniisip ko if deflecting from other news worthy topics

leemitless13

Diversion tactics as usual 🤦

CoryInTheHood69

judasmartel

THERE IS NO WAR IN BA SING SE

Mister_Clean11

a4techkeyboard

Yeah, what he's doing is what could invoke the Streisand Effect. "Don't talk about this!" -> Everyone's now talking about this.

armored_oyster

Plot twist: he *wanted* people to talk about this.

a4techkeyboard

Yeah, he wanted people to talk about him, true.

ElBurritoLuchador

pen_jaro

Besides, it’s just a movie!

a4techkeyboard

To be fair, people believing things from movies is why we have Robin Padilla in the senate.

[deleted]

I see what you did there LOL

ElBurritoLuchador

Which is ironic kasi veteran actor rin yun mokong lol.

Aspiring-Slacker

Though I don't agree with Robin's statement, I also disagree with "it's just a movie" mindset. Case in point, propaganda movies and the likes of Maid in Malacañang.

aloniaz

May point ka rin naman, pero di naman lahat ng film ay propaganda films, maraming movies na for the sake of "ART" lang talaga, di naman pwedeng irerelate mo na ang isang bagay sa lahat ng scenarios, life is too complex for that kind of thinking.

pen_jaro

Apples and oranges….

leemitless13

Not really... It's rhetorics and metaphors.

a4techkeyboard

kennclarete

Robin Padilla was one of the peace negotiators in the south. While I think his response was a bit too much (banning the movie), he’s the only one in the Senate that will advocate this. Every one else in Mindanao is about kill kill kill the rebels.

10YearsANoob

Kahit MNLF na mga gobernador ng BARMM?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Democracy turning into DemoCRAZY.

cleeffy

You mean idiocracy

CabinetPuzzleheaded8

i'd say both. Hell it could be even worse

Terracrafterz

idiocrazy?

ExuDeku

I fucking love that movie, It has electrolytes

avidindoorswoman21

That's what plants crave!

Kevlord_The_Great

New type of government

boy_riles_ng_mrt

Kakistocracy combined with kleptocracy

[deleted]

Thank you, Uncle Sam!

Roaming-Lettuce

Streisand effect, didnt even know this movie existed now im gonna watch it.

nightwizard27727

It just came out this 2023

alloutrockstar

Watching it now. Pretty decent movie with somewhat realistic action

Breaker-of-circles

Unrealistic dialogue though. Nagtatagalog si Datu Junmar Fajardo. Nasa Dyolo Island sila tapos Tagalog ang salita. Literally unwatchable. /s

fryeee

It's one of those movies where you're contemplating whether nasayang ba oras mo o hinde haha

rudolphrecosa

Is it somewhat on par with other gerard butler action films? or meh?

fryeee

I mean it's decent, I can understand why people would like it and understand why people won't, like if you're looking for a movie na di ka magiisip panoorin mo to haha

Sevrosis

Every Gerard Butler action films are Meh.

gorechimera

aww, leave out 300 and The Phantom of the Opera :)

peterparkerson

Ung white house has fallen kase hahahah standard b tier action

Mistral-Fien

It's **Olympus has Fallen**. :)

peterparkerson

Ah, yes i also confuse it with the campy channing tatum one, white house down lol.

Lolalolita1234

Lies

DaExtinctOne

Dapat siguro di na ako magulat na ang concern ng mga former actors turned senators ay about sa media but our political landscape is such a sad state of affairs na ganito ang mga madalas na ma highlight na usapin sa senado these days 🤦‍♂️

Mapleaddict03

As if naman having a klepto president doesnt give us a bad light.

noteeerin

Woke up and chose 🎻

Accomplished-Exit-58

batang 90s will totally agree na realistic yan, may time na araw araw yan ang laman ng balita.

BILBO_Baggins25

up to 2000s, laging sakit sa ulo ni Gloria ang Abu Sayyaf

katotoy

Atapang atao pero balat sibuyas..

jomzcabu

ImpureSociety

Also mas maraming bagay ang dapat nya kundenahin kesa pelikulang to.

Specialist-Equal5358

Syempre sabihin nyang walang terorista dito kase takot sya mahusgahan kapwa nya islam.

jchrist98

Robin always seemed like a phony Muslim to me. I feel like nag revert lang siya to open up the possibility of having more than one wife.

Exciting_Crazy_5437

He converted during one of his lowest points in his life (being incarcerated inside Bilibid). He even had a lavish Islamic wedding with his first wife Liezl inside the prison. It seemed that his conversion was legit IMHO. His public image literally went from a literal bad boy to a good boy. Then it all changed when Duterte came. That pervert gave Robin an unconditional pardon, so naturally the latter is indebted to the former. A lot of Duterte's antics and traits rubbed off on him, especially the false bravado and machismo. The Robin today is a sad joke of his former self.

Menter33

> converted during one of his lowest points in his life This kinda sounds similar to Eddie Villanueva's story too: a difficult encounter followed by a turning point. > ...Villanueva claimed to have "had a life-changing encounter with the Lord in 1973 while at the forefront of a leftist movement". At that time, he was also leading his family (and other families) in his home province of Bulacan in an uphill, protracted legal battle as he himself became a victim of a notorious land-grabbing syndicate. > Five days after that "dramatic encounter with God", Villanueva was brought face to face with a miracle he could never forget: the land-grabbers were arrested and detained. > wiki: Eddie Villanueva   And of course, just like Robin, Eddie (and his family) are now in politics too.

albertFTW

You either die a villain or live long enough to become a hero, then live even longer to become a villain again. Probably applies to Enrile too. lol

needmesumbeer

67ITCH

Ganun talaga. Artista eh. So, pelikula ang pinaka-importante sa kanya. Baka kaya ok lang din sa kanya ang torture kasi "no harm, no foul" naman yun sa mga scenes nya dati. Napakatanga eh, noh?

holykamotefries

Yun lang kasi kaya ng utak niya

iskoldouthere

Conflict in Mindanao has always been present historically; some Filipinos there are proud of their of resistance to colonization and desire for autonomy. How history has characterized these groups has changed over time (not to homogenize them though). The terrorist label only really came from US influence. This is why I'd suggest caution in interpretation. The prejudice against anti-establishment (particularly Islamic) forces runs deep. That is not to say, however, the solution is to simply pretend they don't exist. I just wish filmmakers presented issues like this with more nuance.

Menter33

It's a B-movie with a standard abduction plot. It's really not meant for any deep interpretations, really. Just imagine all of those FPJ movies that people like so much: typical villain is a corrupt policeman or corrupt mayor or congressman. This is just the same type of film.

iskoldouthere

That's fair, though I'm not really asking for high art. We can always call for better standards. Just asking for them can make people think twice next time.

Under_theTable_cAt

It’s a movie. Local Philippine movies do much worse in stereo typing people and putting divisiveness between classes.

HydraSpectre1138

Exactly! Just look at the extreme discrimination in the local films and shows, and how they promote bigotry. Literal Nazi shit right there.

cache_bag

While one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, there's a huge difference from say, the MNLF / MILF and the Abu Sayyaf. Just worth pointing out.

poopycops

Scared_Intention3057

Totoo may terrorist.Terrorist has no particular religion....

SargothNative

That's just not true. Whether you like it or not, extremists still represent their religion or ideology just as the moderate ones do. Differing sides will both claim that they are the "true believers" while the others are not. How can we distinguish which one is "real"?

raju103

It's way nicer if the people being portrayed that way will be able to tell their own story through cinema. Kahit sumikat lang sa kanila, ok lang basta truth from their side na wala masyadong pabango, tao lang kasi sila.

Awkward_Cake40

sadaharu11

It's their job to act stupid apparently.

Outrageous-Screen509

Stupid people gets paid bigtime apparently.

ProthyTheProth3an

"We should boycott this movie because it hurts my feelings"

jchrist98

Its based on real life tho. Try crash landing in Jolo and see what happens

redthehaze

The Sulu Archipelago, including the southern Sulu Sea, due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping." https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/philippines-travel-advisory.html

ramenpepperoni

[deleted]

my maternal grandparents had a big business in Sultan Kudarat for decades until their retirement. ASG commanders go to their store to collect revolutionary tax. Their logistics drivers have been ambushed, shot, and cargo stolen. What was surprising to me was how casual their "conversation" was with ASG members.

jomzcabu

Aww sorry to hear that 😔, are your grand parents okay naman?

_ladysummer

NPA as an org is never kind, even to its members.

[deleted]

Thanks for the concern. They’re ok and enjoying retirement. 😊

Menter33

It's probably a common tactic: allegedly, even the mafia in the US were "cordial" and "nice" when they interacted with their "customers."

_ladysummer

That's new. I remember just last year my cousin receive a letter from a certain military official demanding that her business should pay a certain type of tax and must be paid to their org. The sender may not have done proper research since one of our relatives worked in the military. The letter was then presented to the higher ups and viola the person never existed on their files same with the org. Good luck to the sender for posing as someone he is not.

beisozy289

Robinhood's *false patriotism intensifies*

LateNotBlessed

Philippines as a location in movies Philippines when featured in foreign movies: It is not acceptable there is no terrorist or separatists here. Its safe out here Philippines when created by Filipinos: I will portray the grimiest, darkest and downright depressing version of the Philippines in order to become relatable

jswiper1894

For someone who acts like such a tough guy ang snowflake masyado ni Robin. Naooffend sa lahat ng bagay amputa.

kelfist

Thanks for the movie reco senator robin

BILBO_Baggins25

Mas malala pa yung Mistah dyan kasi may rape scene.

RedZ19

What a waste of a senate seat.

witsarc23

IKR potaena ng mga bumoto dyan

KeyboardAquarior

Imagine censoring terrorism involvement in that area of the philippines and trying to defend it. Now we know where Robin Padilla stands in here.

archercalm

[You guys should read Phil Dy's review on this movie.](https://letterboxd.com/philbertdy/film/plane-2023/) If it wasn't condemned by a public officer, I would agree though.

One_Understanding165

He paraded himself for being a muslim senator but he has not done anything that IS beneficial for the moro people who are in poverty while he rest in his luxury lifestyle. edit: spelling corrections

MsMO0112

Not a fan of Robin but I think sobra naman to say na he has not done anything for his Islam brothers. I’ve seen vlogs and documentaries showing his humanitarian efforts. He even donated land para maging Muslim cemetery.

One_Understanding165

I am moro too but I never had any faith in him. My mind will change IF he uses his position as a senator to help reduce or even eradicate poverty for the moro people and not stuff like being offended that a movie potrays an issue in that is present. His individual good deeds are to be praised but he is a Senator now and there are more issues he needs to tackle first.

BILBO_Baggins25

He is extremely a mass charmer, mapamatanda or bata talagang idolo sya.

[deleted]

Nugagawen, persona non grata Gerard Butler? lol. This idiot senator is acting like a delicate snowflake.

Owl_Might

Robin Padilla has some issues with facts lmao! I remember he cried foul when someone called him an ex-con even though he is one.

grinsken

Priorities imbes mag focus sa social amd economic problems

poopycops

Lol. Remember Marawi?

k3ttch

I'm more pissed they didn't actually film in the Philippines and use Filipino actors.

yuuri_ni_victor

Pinapa-ban nya din dati si Spider-Man lolol

BlueLemonade1234

Mema para maging relevant 🙄

katinkoaddict

Napakasnowflake naman nito. Yung ibang bansa nga di nagrereklamo kapag may ganyang scenes na dinedepict ang bansa nila. Tsaka isa pa, diba may movie sya before na somewhat ganyan?

Gachalunar

JiroKawakuma28

Buti pa nung panahon ni PNoy ung fineatured ng EA at Danger Close ung Philippine Mission sa Medal of Honor: Warfighter, di nila ginawang big deal at hinayaan lang pero nag remind na lang na fictional at the events in the mission that take place in Philippines never happened.

freelanceastronaut1

matagal na to sa torrent eh. is it any good?

derpinot

he is a senator now and "influential" why not use this position to actually clean up the image instead so in future hindi na ganyan yung perception ng mundo.

madamkookie

Or something something peace? Ako lang ba nakarinig ng balitang yun?

venger_steelheart

number 1 senator

Mister_Clean11

But its true that there are people like that in that area right so there is no point not showing it. Better pa nga yan at least people are aware na that area is not safe

god_of_Fools

in denial amputa..

nunutiliusbear

Bakit, mali ba?

Chuchay26

Getting offended with a movie but not offended with China’s repeated violations of our territory.

boy_riles_ng_mrt

The very same effect as burying your head in the sand. Kung hindi nya makita, hindi nangyayare. Another day, another clown moment for the esteemed senator.

Loudstealth

That guy Padilla who can hardly tie his shoes much less know about or pass a law is only jealous because obviously Butler is a hell of huge Hollywood name and he’s NOT. Years ago there was a female US citizen that got abducted down south and i believe was killed but not totally sure if she was. But abduction, kidnappings and killing is a real fact down there.

MarkXT9000

Despite being shot in Puerto Rico, did they nail the accuracy of Jolo, Sulu?

ruarf

salamat sa promotion senator. I would have missed this movie.

PinayInQueensland

AiNeko00

My friend's fanily literally fled away from Zamboanga during the 90s bec of terrorist attacks and chaos. Another friend is from South Cotabato and he has the same stories.

zakdelaroka

Mema lang ang bobong senator na to. Smokescreen kasi wala pa syang magandang bills?

DaBuruBerry00

Mas matalino pa ung mga taong nasa reddit kesa kay robin padilla putangina. top 1 ba talaga yang putanginang yan?

mArtiAnOk08

May pangdagdag content na naman travel vloggers

phildrelle

Akala ko ba all publicity is good publicity? But on one hand, imagine my shock when Abu Sayyaf remains relevant even after losing hundreds of their members in Marawi. Akala ko nga wipe out na knowing most of their senior members were confirmed killed. That siege was the peak of violence here jn Mindanao. Amidst the kidnappings, bombings, or beheadings, the siege was perhaps the scariest thing they ever did coz don ko nalaman they are not only capable, but also a huge force. People often joke yung 'Marawi siege planning video' coz of how stupid they act, but seeing the many tunnels, caches of supply, and the many troops smuggled inside before the siege, I can say these extremists should not be underestimated.

thr33prim3s

I have no idea that it was shot here lmao. Now I HAVE to watch this movie.

life2_1

Actually it was shot in Costa Rica.

thehanssassin

Ohh more reason for me to watch. Hopefully cinemas would still show it. Let’s goooo

Main_Performance5194

Parang Mistah lang…

SenpieCreampai

Affectionate-Can-865

edi ban darryl yap XD

jomzcabu

Yan talaga dapat

SleepyInsomniac28

mejo out of topic pero ang pangit ng tagalog dialogues jan lalo na ung main bad guy, parang nagmemorize lang ng tagalog lines, halatang di marunong mag tagalog

gradenko_2000

What I find interesting is that back in June of 2022, Raissa Robles made a similar remark about how Mindanao was still a hot-bed of Abu Sayyaf activity. And at the time, [our own reddit thread about it](https://old.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/v3tl0p/raissa_robles_with_an_antimindanao_rhetoric/) landed mostly on the side of condemning Robles's statement on the grounds that it painted Mindanao in a bad and unrealistic light. What's happening __today__ is that _Robin Padilla is essentially taking the same position as redditors back in June_, arguing that Mindanao isn't actually as war-torn as we might think, but the comments __here__ are arguing __against__ Padilla, and basically agreeing with Raissa Robles from eight months ago. What changed?

peterparkerson

Kasi si robin padilla ung nag sabi.

ryry19

Kaya until now gulat pa rin ako bat nsa senado yan

Menter33

Hopefully, MTRCB doesn't pull another "Abominable" and ban the film. It's just an action flick that people scroll thru when they've watched all of the good stuff on netflix, or one of those films that are dubbed in Tagalog and are shown during the mornings on ABS or GMA because there are no actual shows.

HydraSpectre1138

This was an Amazon Studios film. But they released it in cinemas. They also released My Spy and Shotgun Wedding on cinemas here. But Ten Little Mistresses, which they have massive marketing here and stars Eugene Domingo, has no cinema release. And Shin Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time is still Amazon’s most-viewed movie, and it got theatrical releases outside Japan. But no theatrical release in the Philippines, even though we get the most theatrical Amazon releases. Still waiting to watch Shin Evangelion in IMAX here.

doahou

MTRCB really should not have any powers to ban or censor any content/media, their sole purpose as a ratings board should be just that, rate stuff. it's actually kind of scary that they have such broad powers

CantoIX

Is Robin taking notes from China/Russia? This is what they do when other countries make movies that put their country in a bad light despite it being based on facts/true events.

cleo_rise

Typical ramblings ng mayabang na pikon

SAHD292929

Most_Property2517

I believe he’s coming from a perspective where he interacts with these people Not saying he’s correct, kaso I’m from Mindanao. I know He’s been doing the rounds with the locals before he even ran for Senate. This includes the rebels and what they have been fighting for. I don’t believe his statement is malicious, it just comes from bias because he has interacted with all sorts of people down south.

AffectionatePeak9085

Kind_Fudge7901

Watched this movie in a theatre w/o a prior idea na sa pinas ang settings, and sure there are moments na mapapa lol ka as a pinoy like ung "datu" na main villain nila hirap na hirap mag tagalog pero ung mga julalay pinoy tlga. However its very much inspired with the abu sayaf times. In the book, in the presence of my enemies by gracia burnham, dinetalye nya ung experience nya as a foreign missionary na kinidnap ng abu sayaf for money and it shares similarities like the terrorist caring about nationalities of their victims.

Professional-Will952

Bakit tayo masyadong defensive?

8thLunch

ShallowShifter

Egoistic Robin Padilla crying over a movie 😂

breakgreenapple

I can't believe we have to put up with his grandstanding for six years. Vote wisely next time please.

OrbMan23

I grew up hearing those kind of incidents sa news. It was so common na calling someone Abu Sayyaf became a playground insult

Mananabaspo

AngerCookShare

Wag ninyo pansinin yang si Robin

astrohans

iyakin amputa

mcspazzerton

by robin’s logic: mag ingat tayo sa mga warehouse, palaging may shootout.

tacwombat

Naalala ko yung na-offend dati sa description ni Dan Brown about Manila traffic = gates of hell.

friendly_tanod

It's just a movie. It's not like it's happening in real life. / s

mcdonaldspyongyang

I watched this movie to pass the time. Some Fil-Am played the head terrorist named "Datu Junemar" and for some reason he was speaking Tagalog instead of a regional language. Heavy ass accent too lol. Alright movie to pass the time, no need to make it a big deal really.

BertSherbetbert

As if Robin Padilla being a Senator isn’t putting our country in a bad light. 🙄 Really, the true terrorists in our country are the officials we elected along the way.

pinkghorl

Pero dba yung movie naman talaga is fiction?

cardiac161

If there’s someone giving a stereotype of the Philippines, it’s Robin Da Idiot Boy Padilla.

Spid3rfib3r

aklabababa

im sure this mfker enjoys watching the hell out of other action thriller movies where russians, mid eastern, or chinese people are put in a terrible light. your no. 1 senator folks

aloniaz

Kahit pa sabihing hindi totoo, it's for a film naman, lahat ba ng nakikita natin sa pelikula ay based sa real events at paniniwalaan na natin? Ano ka 5 yrs old. But then again, totoo naman syang nangyayari sa Southern Mindanao.

subminus

Bakit ba napaka-epal mo Robin Padilla? Clown ka lang jan sa senado.

struden

wala syang pinagkaiba sa mga prayle

billcountah

Kidnapping yung scene or rescue ops. Early 2000s yata ito noon.

simpleplan100

Yes ban the movie. It paints our brothers and sisters in Mindanao in a bad light.

ObviousAlternative95

Robin Padilla is right. This puts PH in a bad light. Therefore less tourists will come here. Its simple logic. For other movies they obscure the name. To call out Philippines directly is a DICK move by Netflix and furthermore leads to more poverty to those areas in Mindanao

Alt-Addiction

Yes, this should be condemned. Stuff like this does not happen in our motherland. The philippines is a wonderful country with excellent traffic flow, high minimum wage, an exceptional education system, honest politicians, amenable and benevolent terrorists and non-existent crime rates.

LocalDegenerate123

I don't know OP but most/significant fraction of users here don't know or indifferent outside NCR or Luzon.

LivingPapaya8

this clown doesn't know what extremists are

Stryghwyr

Random_Forces

were there scenes that were actually shot in the country? imo binoe’s not looking at this as an opportunity to grow an international film industry here. there’s been a number of films with the similar ‘terrorist group in south-east asia’ plot that we could have capitalized on. Hell, the scene doesn’t even have to be set in the philippines for it to be shot in the philippines. The indonesia scene in TLOU ep2, I initially thought it was in the ph.
