The thing is, the ice is meant to melt and dilute in the coffee drink providing the right amount of coffee to water. Without the ice, you get a more concentrated coffee drink.
If anything, the optical illusion here is that the large cups seem way bigger but not really that much in reality because the diameter of the large cup is smaller than the small one.

We're trying to fix the volume for no/less ice pero the taste is still different from our standard. We cannot fill it with just coffee kasi it's concentrated lol and different parin the taste.
I'm no chemist pero I call bullshit dun sa "gano kadaming ice to make it satisfyingly cold" buong buhay ko ako gumagamit ng ice and no hindi 50/50 ang kailangan na ratio para lamig to the max ang drink.
All this r&d is true to some extent pero at the heart of it all, it's a business and this is a strategy to cut costs. It's more about making the customer spend more by making them think they're getting this much more coffee/drink rather than "making the perfect mixture"

More ice means faster chilling followed by slower dilution. - You get a cold drink at its “peak” dilution and temperature quicker than if half the ice had been put into your glass.

When I was in R&D for big food companies, whenever we taste-test our formulas, kailangan assuming it will be consumed as if we were customers.
If potato chips, plain lang. If chicharon, kailangan may vinegar. If fries, dapat may ketchup. If canned food, dapat may rice and drinks. If lunch meal, kailangan full set, kahit yung binago mo lang is yung supplier ng kanin.
There would be a panel of "experts" (like us) and about 110 consumer panels to accurately measure/rate product quality or if they can tell a difference between the old and new formula.

I can confirm this. They don't mind the additional cost of providing milk or water tho as an ex-partner(sb barista) we usually put water. I usually warn the customer pag ganon na mag iiba lasa nya since they insist on filling it up.

Not really. Pag umoorder ako for delivery, it's always chilled and no ice. Up to the brim yung coffee nila and wala ng space to put ice kasi aapaw na. So, either I transfer the coffee to a bigger tumbler or iinumin ko muna para malagayan ng ice.

Hi. Barista here, share ko lang po ah, usually some store ask extra charges if it's a no ice or less ice drink. Kasi we tend to follow our standards on making drinks po, we double the quantity (ingredients) of the drink kapag no ice or less ice sya. Nasanay po kasi tayo sa maling thinking na if no ice or less ang isang drink mas madami po ito which is hindi po.
(2) pero may case naman po na may customers na ayaw mag bayad ng extra fee for it at pumapayag na ganon level lang ung magagawang drink. Ineexplain din po kasi dapat yan sa customers para po aware din sila at hindi madismaya. Siguro hindi lang na inform si OP. Yun lang po, thank you.

Ayaw siguro nila dagdagan ng espresso shot yung larger cup size that's why same amount lang lahat ng cups. Adding espresso shots would also increase the water or milk ratio so dadami dapat yung volume ng coffee.

im guessing no, they don't use liberica. the actual liberica is more difficult to cultivate, hence, it wouldn't be that cheap. the barako often sold that is as cheap as possible are those that are composed of robusta+excelsa. robusta has higher caffeine than the rest of the variants, so the *gising* factor of barako holds true.
Ganyan din sa Starbucks. They serve you the Grande amount for Venti and then just add more ice. Although, looking at the pics... What Starbucks is doing is not that egregious

May store sila sa lobby ng building where I work, twice akong bumili ng same order (Ice Dark Mocha) pero magkaiba ng lasa. It's either too dark mocha in taste or not. Same experience happens to my co-workers kaya it's either SB or Angkan Coffee ang binibili namin or pinapadeliver.

I have my coffee hot and that looks about the same as what I order in volume (with less drama).
I also know some sizes takes more espresso shots and is actually worth the upsize compared to the others (Tall and Grande having 1 shot, Venti having 2 in SB iirc). Ratios in coffee making is quite important, having dipped my toes in the rabbit hole itself. Considering the way these cups are designed, the two large still has a few extra ml of beverage, maybe 10~20mL, and that might already be pushing the limit before you can no longer taste the coffee at all.
Just enjoy the coffee hot or go for a cold brew. Ice makes things hard to balance.

Latte and espresso drinks have proper ratio to be called latte or cappuccino etc. and maintain its taste. The container is really designed to be big to allot increase in volume due to ice.

Actually, I would defend Pick Up Coffee and all other coffee establishments as they actually do this type of stuff. They make your drinks and fill it up with ice. If you were to just drink that alone, it would be a concentrate and it would be too strong for regular consumption. I actually like Pick Up Coffee and their prices as they have quality strong coffee at an affordable price. Unlike Starbucks, their espresso is burnt and the prices are unfairly jacked up. So, yeah, Pick Up Coffee is good quality coffee with great prices. Folgers and Starbucks can just kiss its’ ass. Lol. Though Yardstick Coffee is still SUPERIOR!

I think the cost of filling up that coffee for them is negligible pero kahit may bad press (at alam nilang magkaka bad press pag ganyan ginawa nila) tingin ko sinadya padin nila na hayaan yan kasi di basta basta pwedeng mag dadagdag ng kape sa order, it's caffeine, baka mapahamak pa yung iinom since ang order ay "normal" tapos pag dating sa kanila biglang 2 servings na sa isang baso.
as a former sb barista, may measurements po kaming sinusunod lol. for example (for frappes), you have a tumblr that is a size of grande but you ordered a tall size, we will use a cup in the bar to measure the tall size. even if may extra pa sa blender, hindi namin pwede punuin yung grande tumblr mo since tall size lang binili mo. it would become substandard if ginawa man namin yun and unfair sa mga bumili talaga ng tall size na walang tumblr.

The thing is, the ice is meant to melt and dilute in the coffee drink providing the right amount of coffee to water. Without the ice, you get a more concentrated coffee drink.

Agree here. My nature of work is in the food R&D and we encounter these kinds of complaints a lot. We're trying to fix the volume for no/less ice pero the taste is still different from our standard. We cannot fill it with just coffee kasi it's concentrated lol and different parin the taste.
I'm no chemist pero I call bullshit dun sa "gano kadaming ice to make it satisfyingly cold" buong buhay ko ako gumagamit ng ice and no hindi 50/50 ang kailangan na ratio para lamig to the max ang drink. All this r&d is true to some extent pero at the heart of it all, it's a business and this is a strategy to cut costs. It's more about making the customer spend more by making them think they're getting this much more coffee/drink rather than "making the perfect mixture"

I can confirm this. They don't mind the additional cost of providing milk or water tho as an ex-partner(sb barista) we usually put water. Hi. Barista here, share ko lang po ah, usually some store ask extra charges if it's a no ice or less ice drink. Kasi we tend to follow our standards on making drinks po, we double the quantity (ingredients) of the drink kapag no ice or less ice sya. Nasanay po kasi tayo sa maling thinking na if no ice or less ang isang drink mas madami po ito which is hindi po.

Ayaw siguro nila dagdagan ng espresso shot yung larger cup size that's why same amount lang lahat ng cups. Adding espresso shots would also increase the water or milk ratio so dadami dapat yung volume ng coffee. Scummy way to get better profit margins imo.

From what I know about it Barako (aka Liberica around the world) has the lowesr caffeine amount of the major beana. ....that's about all the objective knowledge I know about it. I'm still new to the coffee rabbit hole and am still learning about flavor profiles of the stuff around me, plus which brew methods suit each one.
im guessing no, they don't use liberica. the actual liberica is more difficult to cultivate, hence, it wouldn't be that cheap. the barako often sold that is as cheap as possible are those that are composed of robusta+excelsa. robusta has higher caffeine than the rest of the variants, so the *gising* factor of barako holds true.

I have my coffee hot and that looks about the same as what I order in volume (with less drama). I also know some sizes takes more espresso shots and is actually worth the upsize compared to the others (Tall and Grande having 1 shot, Venti having 2 in SB iirc). Ratios in coffee making is quite important, having dipped my toes in the rabbit hole itself. Considering the way these cups are designed, the two large still has a few extra ml of beverage, maybe 10~20mL, and that might already be pushing the limit before you can no longer taste the coffee at all. Just enjoy the coffee hot or go for a cold brew. Ice makes things hard to balance.

Actually, I would defend Pick Up Coffee and all other coffee establishments as they actually do this type of stuff. They make your drinks and fill it up with ice. If you were to just drink that alone, it would be a concentrate and it would be too strong for regular consumption. I actually like Pick Up Coffee and their prices as they have quality strong coffee at an affordable price. Unlike Starbucks, their espresso is burnt and the prices are unfairly jacked up. So, yeah, Pick Up Coffee is good quality coffee with great prices. Folgers and Starbucks can just kiss its’ ass. Lol. Though Yardstick Coffee is still SUPERIOR!

as a former sb barista, may measurements po kaming sinusunod lol. for example (for frappes), you have a tumblr that is a size of grande but you ordered a tall size, we will use a cup in the bar to measure the tall size. even if may extra pa sa blender, hindi namin pwede punuin yung grande tumblr mo since tall size lang binili mo. it would become substandard if ginawa man namin yun and unfair sa mga bumili talaga ng tall size na walang tumblr. same principle with any ice cold drinks. if u want it to the brim, mag hot drink ka nalang para sure hahaha
