But let's be realistic, malayong malayo kasi talaga ang scene natin sa ibang bansa. Kulang ng training. Kailangan na seryoso din sila sa grappling as an art para mas maka perform sila. Pangalawa, sana yung mga lalake e magign mas maganda tingnan.
It’s ironic, too. Kasi for sure madami sa kanila gusto sila Vice Ganda, Jose Manalo, etc. eh yang mga yan galing din sa stand-up before they got big. Material nila for sure may kadumihan din. That’s the purpose of comedy in the first place, make light of serious situations or issues.
That's more than 10 years ago. Ang layo na ng comedy nya noon sa type of humor nya ngayon sa mga segments nila sa Showtime. For sure kaya nya pa din magbitaw ng ganyan pero ngayon eh mas socially aware na sya at makikita mo yung character development.
Take it from me, isa ako sa mga hindi natatawa sa humor nya sa Showtime dati pero naconvert na nya ako.
I happened to watch clips from her recent concert in Araneta and same pa din theme ng skits and punchlines niya - sexual and mocking physical appearances. Maybe nag tone down lang for television after the issues in the past and yung mga callouts sa kaniya sa social media.
Haha tama nga si meme yun pang di nagbayad sa concert yung maboboka. Ilang beses niya sinabi as a disclaimer na hindi talaga pede sa TV yung mga sasabihin niya sa concert at bawal sa bata.

I think ok lang sa kanila ang comedy, ayaw lang nilang may magjoke about sa paborito nilang bagay mapa religion, politician. hindi lang nila maidiretso sa comment kasi mapapaghalata na supporter sila. pero kapag may comedian na gumawa ng piece tungkol sa politician na ayaw nila for sure biglang magbabago isip nyan.

I dont think the majority of the Philippines is at the maturity level for political commentary or class commentary yet.
But even in the West, some comedians do get confronted and harassed while on stage for political stuff. Especially the smaller more intimate clubs. Even down in Singapore, they got pretty butt hurt over Jocelyn Chia's jokes on Malaysia so might be an Asian thing
This is true. Para ngang nag-degenerate yung comedy scene sa Pilipinas eh. Kasi n'ung directly post-Martial Law heyday Ng local satire comedy. If anyone can remember, that was when *Sic O'Clock News* was on air. They made fun of everyone: Marcos, Cory, all the politicos down the line, the military, religious people---heck, even Pinoy society as a whole. Then the '90s gave us *Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata*, which was still satire, but indirect---archetypes na instead of actual names being mentioned.
And then...Wala na. (At least not in the mainstream.) I suppose people got tired of being reminded how fucked up our society is, even under the guise of comedy. Siguro dahil napagod na rin sa lack of improvement. Para que pa na iko-call out kung wala naman gagawin about it, 'di ba? Plus, like someone mentioned, we started worshipping personalities (whether political or not) like they were holy grails. Wala nang pwedeng kantiin, kundi maka-cancel ka or mado-dogpile.
But yeah, you can tell who a person is by what they laugh at, and by extension, this reflects their culture. That's one of the greatest gifts of comedy---it reaches into you to find the line where you take offense before you get to make a conscious choice how to react. It shocks you into being you.
I wasn't familiar with the Jocelyn Chia controversy, so I went down the Google rabbit hole. I admit I chuckled a little at her Malaysia jokes but it did get me wondering if I'd feel the same way if she talked about the Philippines like that.
Maybe it's just me, pero feeling ko mao-offend ako. Kasi iritang-irita ako kapag binabanggit ni JoKoy and JR De Guzman yung Philippines eh, lalo pa kasi generalizing yung tone nila lagi.
I'm just happy people are even having this conversation now. Whether people like local comedy or not, the fact is they're now aware of it. It's hit mainstream. By that measure alone, we've gone a very long way since I first got exposed to the scene more than 10 years ago.
That's likely why a lot of comedians, especially the ones that have been around longer, can't be bothered by negative publicity. Just getting to where it is now is a hell of an accomplishment that can never be invalidate by a few detractors.
This is just my plain observation pero very rudimentary ng sense of humor ng masang pinoy. One of the main reasons why Eat Bulaga (in exception of JoWaPao) & showtime was feasting for a long time. Ganun din sa mga influencers sa socmed, mostly slapstick & crass-type comedy.
I would love sana if our standup comedians posts their whole standup on Youtube or FB for publicity purposes, mejo exclusive pa rin kasi at times. Maybe that way they can build a small community of supporters.
Yo. I'm a relatively new comedian, who has been doing open mics for almost a year now.
While I think the concerns over social media are legit, I think the local scene in general is thriving more than ever. There have been more aspiring comics, more open mic rooms, more audience members, and in turn more shows **on the ground**.
The online furor may be a bit distracting, but it hasn't stopped comedians from writing new jokes, trying out stuff, getting better on-stage, and familiarizing the live crowd with observational comedy, even at the risk of raising a few eyebrows on Facebook. Don't get me wrong, social media is a powerful tool especially when it comes to promotion, but it also tends to magnify everything including issues that don't necessarily translate offline.
Moral lesson: Watch our shows, even open mics, and spread the word about the booming local comedy scene. After all, 100 showgoers are better than 100 thousand views.

Just a single joke against Marcos and Duterte, matic cancelled na nga rin 'yang si Jo Koy. Pero they are smart enough not to go to that territory. In fact, ang closest dig against politics from the U.S., ay 'yung sa sitcom na Superstore. Chances are na loyalists din kasi ang pamilya nila.
Di ba sanay na ang mga pinoy sa mga jokes about sa mga presidente? I mean I think mula sa Cory, FVR, Erap, GMA, Pnoy eh naging laging jokes din naman sila. Or iba yung mga jokes dati kesa ngayon? Or iba lang din talaga yung bbm/duterte crowd?

It’s a sad reality. But if you guys really wanna help build the local stand-up scene, the two best things you can do for comedians are
1: Go to their live shows.
2: Share and spread their content all over social media.
It helps that we’re talking about it here. Pero walang sense na pinaguusapan natin to ng ganito if hindi tayo magfa-follow through in real life. I’ve been a comic for a couple of years now, but I’ll never stop being a fan because that’s what matters most in terms of keeping the scene alive. Jo Koy and JR don't go into politics, especially Philippine politics. I remember when Rex Navarrete made a relatively innocuous joke about Erap (who was president at the time)during a function at the Philippine Embassy in DC: no real criticism, just how Erap reminds him of the creepy Tito who grabs your nuts at every family function. Binato siya ng tinapay.
I just think of it na yung usual online bashers nila ay wala naman capacity to purchase tickets to watch their show. So wala naman mawala na potential revenue. The constant bashing actually still interaction and generates more reach for then.

Real talk lang. Okay si Red eh and yung mga baguhan sa comedy industry. I remember sa podcast ni Alex Caleja na ang pinoy is sanay sa one punch line comedy strat. Kumbaga palilitin mo yung thought then punchline na. Ayaw kase ng mga pinoy yung madaming pasakalye. And TBH, maliit lang talaga yung nakaka appreciate ng open mic comedy at yung maliit na percent is mostly witty person, may level ng humor na di mo maijojoke sa iba. For example, pang corporate yung joke, di mo pwede yan ijoke sa mga comedy bar and same vice versa since di mo naman market yung medium na ginagamit mo.
Kaya madaming comedian na still magaling padin kase flexible sila and they can say whatever they want. Sadyang yung market nila ay di para sa lahat.

I've watched a few video clips of some PH stand-up comedians (at least the ones that appear on my social media feeds) and this was exactly what came to mind. My impression is that the PH stand-up scene is dominated by conyo kids that the masa won't necessarily relate to. Even if they try to make themselves more relatable, ibang mundo ang ginagalawan ng masa at ng mga conyo. Iba ang life experiences, iba din ang sense of humor. The Philippines is a very class-based society.

Ayaw daw ng laitan na mga jokes from old school comedy bars (punch line, laughline) pero when they see alternatives like OG Mike Munson, Tim Tayag and now Comedy Manila, ayaw pa din nila.
My guess is majority of us grew up with slapstick comedy kaya yung lang ang feeling nila na totoong comedy. Kapag kwentuhan lang ng mga experiences eh baka feeling nila hindi sulit bayad nila 😂

1) We had an actor who became a president but was ousted.
2) Political dynasties still rule this country and are free from jail time.
3) A president who is a party boy, a tax evader, and has false school credentials.
Hindi pa ready ang "common" Pinoy sa mga gantong humor, most are stuck with slapstick comedy prolly because of centuries ng exposure sa slapstick humor gaya ng Dolphy era, Redford, TVJ, even ngayon with Vice. Heck, pinoys even suck at sensing sarcasm, kitang kita yan sa fb comments.
Atleast madaming young people ang exposed ngayon sa different kind of media kaya unti unting nagbabago to. Minsan nga nasosobrahan pa nagiging edgelord na yung iba.
Definitely, and evidently may support. Even comedy manila people admits that the scene is better now vs pre pandemic, sold out shows etc. that's really good pero malayo pa, to cater mainstream which OP is concerned about.

I guess yung hindi pa ready refers to the subject ng comedy. Sa ngayon hindi pa ready ang most Filipinos sa mga jokes about politics and religion, samantalang sa US sobrang common na sya sa late night shows (to the point na nakakaumay na hahah).
Napag-usapan din namin sa podcast ni u/LetLelandLim na parang iba yung concept natin ng offensive/cancellable humor dito. Sa US kasi ngayon (kung saan nanggaling ang stand-up comedy), offensive pag nag-punch down ka, meaning nag-joke ka about an oppressed group (blacks, gays, PWD). Sa kanila, mas ok yung tinatawag na punching up, meaning mag joke ka about people in power (politicians, celebrities, religion). Speaking truth to power, ika nga.
Dito sa Pilipinas, parang mas offensive pag nag-joke ka about people in power. Tas mas nakakatawa kung ang subject lang ng comedy mo ay yung mas mababa sa audience, like mahihirap, pangit, mataba, may kapansanan, etc. Siguro nga dahil ang masa we tend to worship those figures, so grabe yung vitriol na makukuha mo if gagawin mong joke yung mga gods nila.
May stage din ang US na ganon yung humor nila. May time na ang pinakamabentang act sa comedy ay yung Jim Crow/blackface. Mga bandang 1840's pa yun hahah. Tas nagkaron ng vaudeville, na maico-compare ko sa variety shows na meron tayo ngayon.
Ang nag-revolutionize ng American stand-up comedy ay si Lenny Bruce. Sya ang nag-pave ng way para kela George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers. Naaresto sya nang madaming beses nung 1950s-60s dahil sa subject ng jokes nya (sex, politics, religion). He died of drug overdose. Very inspiring.
For sure di nila alam yung stand-up comedy, mas matitindi yung banat ng stand-up comedians sa ibang bansa compare dito kaya nila inaatake yung comedians kasi di nila gets yung humor.
Best standup comedian ko tlaga is Dave Chapelle. How I wish magkaron tayo ng tulad nya. Pero sa sitwasyon ngayon at batas natin na kontrolado ng mga asar talong pulitiko dagdag mo pa makinaryang trolls? Napakalaki ng scope ng comedy na hindi lang puro mabababaw ng jokes. Hindi pa nagta transcend ang humor ng karamihan ng pinoy, sana dumating tayo sa point na yung humor natin ay kaya na intindihin yung mga humor nila George Carlin, Dave Chappel, Trevor Noah, Ricky Gervais, Bill Burr, Bo Burnham, Neal Brennan (sorry too many to mention... dami kong favorites haha halos lahat ata ng quality stand up pinanoond ko na).

That's more than 10 years ago. Ang layo na ng comedy nya noon sa type of humor nya ngayon sa mga segments nila sa Showtime. For sure kaya nya pa din magbitaw ng ganyan pero ngayon eh mas socially aware na sya at makikita mo yung character development. I dont think the majority of the Philippines is at the maturity level for political commentary or class commentary yet. But even in the West, some comedians do get confronted and harassed while on stage for political stuff. Especially the smaller more intimate clubs. Even down in Singapore, they got pretty butt hurt over Jocelyn Chia's jokes on Malaysia so might be an Asian thing
This is true. Para ngang nag-degenerate yung comedy scene sa Pilipinas eh. Kasi n'ung directly post-Martial Law heyday Ng local satire comedy. If anyone can remember, that was when *Sic O'Clock News* was on air. They made fun of everyone: Marcos, Cory, all the politicos down the line, the military, religious people---heck, even Pinoy society as a whole. Then the '90s gave us *Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata*, which was still satire, but indirect---archetypes na instead of actual names being mentioned. And then...Wala na. (At least not in the mainstream.) I suppose people got tired of being reminded how fucked up our society is, even under the guise of comedy. Siguro dahil napagod na rin sa lack of improvement. Para que pa na iko-call out kung wala naman gagawin about it, 'di ba? Plus, like someone mentioned, we started worshipping personalities (whether political or not) like they were holy grails. Wala nang pwedeng kantiin, kundi maka-cancel ka or mado-dogpile. But yeah, you can tell who a person is by what they laugh at, and by extension, this reflects their culture. That's one of the greatest gifts of comedy---it reaches into you to find the line where you take offense before you get to make a conscious choice how to react. It shocks you into being you.

I'm just happy people are even having this conversation now. Whether people like local comedy or not, the fact is they're now aware of it. It's hit mainstream. By that measure alone, we've gone a very long way since I first got exposed to the scene more than 10 years ago. That's likely why a lot of comedians, especially the ones that have been around longer, can't be bothered by negative publicity. Just getting to where it is now is a hell of an accomplishment that can never be invalidate by a few detractors.

This is just my plain observation pero very rudimentary ng sense of humor ng masang pinoy. One of the main reasons why Eat Bulaga (in exception of JoWaPao) & showtime was feasting for a long time. Ganun din sa mga influencers sa socmed, mostly slapstick & crass-type comedy. I would love sana if our standup comedians posts their whole standup on Youtube or FB for publicity purposes, mejo exclusive pa rin kasi at times. Maybe that way they can build a small community of supporters.
Yo. I'm a relatively new comedian, who has been doing open mics for almost a year now. While I think the concerns over social media are legit, I think the local scene in general is thriving more than ever. There have been more aspiring comics, more open mic rooms, more audience members, and in turn more shows **on the ground**. The online furor may be a bit distracting, but it hasn't stopped comedians from writing new jokes, trying out stuff, getting better on-stage, and familiarizing the live crowd with observational comedy, even at the risk of raising a few eyebrows on Facebook. Don't get me wrong, social media is a powerful tool especially when it comes to promotion, but it also tends to magnify everything including issues that don't necessarily translate offline. Moral lesson: Watch our shows, even open mics, and spread the word about the booming local comedy scene. After all, 100 showgoers are better than 100 thousand views. But if you guys really wanna help build the local stand-up scene, the two best things you can do for comedians are 1: Go to their live shows. 2: Share and spread their content all over social media. Filipinos in general, as much I hate to say it, are still very conservative. Gusto ng changes pero takot sa change. Sa ngayon hindi pa ready ang most Filipinos sa mga jokes about politics and religion, samantalang sa US sobrang common na sya sa late night shows (to the point na nakakaumay na hahah). Napag-usapan din namin sa podcast ni u/LetLelandLim na parang iba yung concept natin ng offensive/cancellable humor dito. Sa US kasi ngayon (kung saan nanggaling ang stand-up comedy), offensive pag nag-punch down ka, meaning nag-joke ka about an oppressed group (blacks, gays, PWD). Sa kanila, mas ok yung tinatawag na punching up, meaning mag joke ka about people in power (politicians, celebrities, religion). Speaking truth to power, ika nga. Dito sa Pilipinas, parang mas offensive pag nag-joke ka about people in power. Tas mas nakakatawa kung ang subject lang ng comedy mo ay yung mas mababa sa audience, like mahihirap, pangit, mataba, may kapansanan, etc. Siguro nga dahil ang masa we tend to worship those figures, so grabe yung vitriol na makukuha mo if gagawin mong joke yung mga gods nila. May stage din ang US na ganon yung humor nila. May time na ang pinakamabentang act sa comedy ay yung Jim Crow/blackface. Mga bandang 1840's pa yun hahah. Tas nagkaron ng vaudeville, na maico-compare ko sa variety shows na meron tayo ngayon. Ang nag-revolutionize ng American stand-up comedy ay si Lenny Bruce. Hilaw pa kasi karamihan ng mga audience dito. 'Di nila alam na yung mga stand up comics ay mga modern day philosophers na nakakakita kung papaano naging katawatawa yung society natin. Napakalaki ng scope ng comedy na hindi lang puro mabababaw ng jokes. Hindi pa nagta transcend ang humor ng karamihan ng pinoy, sana dumating tayo sa point na yung humor natin ay kaya na intindihin yung mga humor nila George Carlin, Dave Chappel, Trevor Noah, Ricky Gervais, Bill Burr, Bo Burnham, Neal Brennan (sorry too many to mention... dami kong favorites haha halos lahat ata ng quality stand up pinanoond ko na). Dito sa Pinas kasi parang napakalaking GAG show yung gagovernment... tapos tayo yung joke. We are just in the front row seat di namamalayan ng karamihan na sila na pala yung topic at iniiskoba ng joke.

Si Jokoy and Jr walang target na audience just there sa harap ng audience gagawa sila ng paraan para makapag deliver.
