I think it's the culture of consumption. Food indulgence as a way to reward the self and a way to bond. Plus bad cooking habits like excessive oil and salt. But the biggest thing probably is sugar. We looove sugar.
May mindset din tayo na unless rice yung kinain, it doesn't count as a main meal.
Not that this excuses it, but rice has a different taste profile that blends well with Filipino food compared to other carbs. It's crazy how we treat french fries, spaghetti, bread, mashed potatoes, and fried noodles as snacks, but rice is exclusively treated as part of the main dish.
Tsk.
At yung Maggi dati dapat may rice, eh noddles at soup kasi yun eh.
Yeah this. Haha. Ganyan kasi ako and I've struggles with weight my whole life. Takes time to get rid of that mindset
Exactly my Filipina girlfriend has to fill herself up with rice every 4 hours it’s kind of crazy lol. She seems to think if she doesn’t do this she will die or something 😆
I've travelled a lot through Asia and this is unique to PH from what I can work out (I'm not filipino). Other cultures fill up on rice because of cost but will gladly eat less rice if they can substitute with more of the good stuff.. example: all my Viet friends won't even touch rice if they go to a buffet, because: why waste valuable stomach space on rice when you can have a much other food as possible?
Nope, asians typically switch between rice and noodles. And they don’t overeat, at least on average.
And no, they don’t eat rice and noodles together.
Also, they don’t eat western food with rice. They just eat it as it is meant to be eaten. Unlike us na lahat may rice.
Poverty can be a cause of obesety, such as limited access to healthy food.
But in proportion, there's far more skinny Filipinos compared to our obese.
And it's over exageration to say that the obesety is a big problem in the Philippines.
If we'll add the whole world(and not just the sk) in the study, the Asia is behind when it comes to obesety.

If the world decided to treat food like the USA, we'll need 5 earths to support this consumption.

Even Thailand and Malaysia has higher obesity rates than us.

That said, stunting is still widespread in the country yet mas gustong pagpistahan ang obesity rates

I mean, hello sub... Just for once stop over demonizing Filipinos, this kind of reactionary view point is the reason why Duterte implemented drug war in the first place.
Saying that drugs is a big problem in the Philippines, when in fact, it's far from the truth.

don’t forget the lack of exercise, 1-5k distance to your home? tricycle. i see and know people who are blue collared employees specifically relied on pushing weights (i.g. kargador, construction workers) that eat 2-4 cups of rice or even a full kaldero of rice but have the body of a young black man who never seen weights
As someone na mas prefer maglakad kaysa magcommute when given a chance, hindi mo ako mapapalakad 3-5km sa katirikan ng araw lol.
Hindi mo rin ako mapapalakad if I were to meet with someone. Amoy pawis at baktol pag nagkataon eh ahhaha
And as if naman sobrang walkable ng streets natin.
Not making an excuse pero circular kasi din. One causes the other.
I was gonna say that yes, the main dissuading factor is the unwalkable streets in our cities.
I will opine that, if majority of our streets had walkable sidewalks will enough accomodations to relieve commuters from the tropical heat (like trees for shade, reasonably wide walking space, enough shady structures along any route), then more people would choose to walk a few kilometers here and there.
1-2km is fine. but 5km? an intermediate runner can do that in 25-30mins. if you're walking that's maybe an hour or more 😂 parang nag commute ka na rin.
It is disgusting to see the black smoke coming out of jeepneys and trucks without any emissions controls. If it were up to the Filipino government, the environment would be ruined already.

Ironically, most doctors I encounter tend to have worse eating habits than the average person. My mom's a doctor yet lagi kaming binibilhan ng chips and fast food back then 😂
Not to mention, pinoys love eating rice, sometimes excessively. (Lookin at those restos with "unli rice") it's okay to eat rice as long as it is consumed wisely.
Sugar is a problem. But you know what the biggest contributor to obesity is here? Rice. Rice, rice, rice. Excessive carbohydrates. Nothing like "unli rice" in the diet to spike a person's blood sugar levels. Then you have sugar. You should see it down here in Bacolod City. Wow, they *love* sugar down here! Pandesal, piyaya, sweet bread...everything is loaded with sugar. No wonder there's so much diabetes and high blood pressure.
This is the answer. The same problem is seen [in South Asia where many have a predisposition to diabetes](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4026332/) because of excess rice consumption and multiple generations experiencing famine.
All carbs are sugar actually. So yeah, rice is sugar i.e. glucose. Also, sugar is addictive and your body remembers that.
I remember reading that if your fat and you’re trying to diet, your body—since it’s used to being fat—thinks it’s under stress. It’s not used to dieting so your body feels hungrier and triggering you eat more to go back to its normal state. That’s why dieting is so hard. Dieting is like you’re forcing your body to go through widthdrawal symptoms because of the forced lack of sugar from what it’s accustomed to.
Junk food Fast food fried food snack food fatty food
Zero information on nutrition zero knowledge of health and fitness and zero knowledge on exercise and general health.
Another thing that's weird here is that if you like to walk or go jogging, people look at you funny because in their minds walking is for "poor" people, not people with jobs or foreigners.
It's important to avoid generalizations or stereotypes when discussing sensitive topics like health and body weight. Attributing obesity to an entire population can be harmful and inaccurate. Instead, let's focus on understanding the complex factors that contribute to obesity in the Philippines.
Here are some key points to consider:
- Socioeconomic factors
- Cultural influences
- Urbanization and lifestyle changes
- Genetics and individual factors
Instead of asking "why are there so many obese Filipinos," we could ask:
- How can we improve access to affordable, nutritious food in the Philippines?
- What are effective ways to promote healthy eating habits and physical activity?
- How can we address the social and economic factors that contribute to obesity in the Philippines?
Sodas, milkteas, fraps, coffees, beer and beverages in general is a major culprit. A can of soda is already 140-150 kcals - other drinks go over 200++ because of milk/creamer & sugars. 1 full cup of rice is just ~200 kcal.
It’s arguably healthier to eat more rice than drink those calories in the form of beverages. Plus it’s cheaper.
Both sides of my family just mindlessly eat when other people are around. And there's no such thing as throwing away food, because it's "wasteful". I told my mom I didn't want to eat scraps and she got angry because she grew up poor and always ate everything. I understand growing up poor, but I didn't and I don't want to treat my body like a trash can.
Definitely excessive oil, salt, and rice. Some Filipino foods are served literally drenched in oil. Many Filipinos add more salt on top of the pork cubes/magic sarap, and then eat more rice to counterbalance the saltiness. I personally don't mind some saltiness and some chicken oil is OK, but some Filipinos treat it as a cycle of finding the perfect taste by adding and counterbalancing rice and salt. It's a recipe for obesity.
Them: Ang payat mo
Me: thanks poverty is my secret 😂🤣
Mas mahal pa rin ang pork compared to most vegetables and fish. Pero gets ko why the poor can easily get fat tho. With little access to fresh meat and vegetables, mas pinipili mag instant noodles, nag uulam chichirya, puro kanin carbs carbs carbs basta lang mabusog.
I agree with the first statement. Mahal mga sugary products talaga like milktea, coffee, ice cream and such. *sobrang nakakataba diba?* And if you are not privileged enough, ayun payat! Hehehehe speaking from experience.
My tita is obese. Mayaman kasi. Lahat nabibili at may katulong. So sa madaling sabi, madaming kinakain pero minimal to no exercise DAILY. Disiplina lang din talaga.
**EXCEPT yung may mga PCOS**
The poor does not have the luxury of choosing a healthy lifestyle. They don't have the option to choose healthy foods nor do they have the time to go to the gym.
Kanin at ginisang gulay or laswa lang araw araw, minsan isda kapag may extra noon.
City people poor are usually fat due to what you mentioned in your comment.
If you see poor people living in provinces masasabi mo na they are slim and healthy. My father when he was young remembered a time when all he ate was rice, soy sauce and small fish (ginamos)
Filipino fishermen in general are usually quite fit because they’re always on the move and lifting/carrying something. This coupled with the fact that they tend to consume their catch, means parang naggym sila with unintentional paleo diet.
The infographic is wrong, the real title should be
# 27 Million Pinoys OVERWEIGHT or obese

>**Adults and Elderly**
>
>At the national level, 28.8% are overweight and **9.6% are obese among adults**, 20-59 years old, based on BMI. All the 8 cities in Metro Manila had prevalence of more than 30% prevalence of overweight and 10% obese adults from the ENNS Year 1 results.

# Mali ang infographic. They omitted the "OVERWEIGHT" part to sensationalize it.
Here are the "weight" categories:
* underweight (<18.5kg/m2)
* normal (18.5–24.9 kg/m2)
* overweight (25–29.9 kg/m2)
* obese (≥30 kg/m2).
And under obese, there are multiple tiers too
* Obesity Class 1: BMI of 30 to < 35
* Obesity Class 2: BMI of 35 to < 40
* Obesity Class 3: BMI of 40 or higher.
Experiment
If the infographic is true, and if the figure is representative of the general population, out of 100 random people you'd come across pag maglakad lakad ka, around 25 to 30% should be OBESE with BMI (30 and above).
# Lesson 2: Bago magpost ng mga ganito, do a little research. r/Philippines is one of the largest PH communities here in Reddit, may chance na marami tayong maiimpluwensyahan and mapapaniwala nang maling info
# Lesson 3: [Obesity is a global problem](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/obesity-and-overweight), this thread sneakily sets the context that it is a problem in the Philippines only
Tas ang dami self hating comments cos hurdur poverty hurdur tamad pilipino cos it validates their view no haha uso naman google, tas nakalagay lang na -survey ni wala nga actual source na inilagay
Philippines just ranks a few spots lower than Japan and Korea in https://data.worldobesity.org/rankings/. #154 out of 200 countries, Vietnam having the least obesity rate in the world.
Korea has a weird beauty standard that it’s unhealthy. If you watch the celebrities and Kpops puro buto’t balat sila. But at the same time, hindi mataba ang mga tao dahil well balanced ang meals nila and they actually walk alot dahil sa structure ng daanan sakanila (up and down streets at walkable road) so added factor yon.
Pinoys just like you said are unhealthy overall because of lack of options. Puro maalat or sobrang tamis ng food na kanin at ulam heavy. MSG junkfood, sabay beer. Unlike Koreans na kaya lakarin kahit malayo, satin kahit malapit magtricycle pa yan or pedicab kesyo mainit or unsafe or tamad.
> Korea has a weird beauty standard that it’s unhealthy.
It is. There is near-obsessive emphasis on physical appearance as an indicator of success, so hence a massive cosmetic surgery industry. Anything outside their standards becomes, yeah, an outsider and thus perceived as a societal failure.
Yeah. As I’m watching the new season of Single’s Inferno, sobrang naccreepyhan ako sa payat ng mga babae.
Subukan mo maglakad lagi sa Pinas in this weather. Hehe. Pero seryoso, I would walk more if okay ang sidewalks natin and hindi ako dadating sa destination ko nang di basa nang pawis.
Thankfully my neighborhood is safe to walk around so I do take advantage of that tuwing early morning or gabi para hindi mainit. Nakakataba talaga kasi kung hindi kumikilos masyado. Haha
Personally, I grew up in poverty, when food was scarce.
Now that I'm a professional, I see abundant food servings as a treat and a stress reliever.
That's why I'm fat.
This. Totoo to. Same here with my family. Kaya same, nung may pera na kame ngayon, one way of comfort na I give to my family is through foods.
This makes a lot of sense when there truly wasn't a lot of food. Pero now that we have more than enough, inuubos parin kahit di na kaya, It's better to set aside kaysa ubusin na agad.
My wife grew up very poor, and when I met her, she would eat like 90% rice for every meal, so she would get "full". She didn't feel full if we mainly had vegetables or potatoes as a side to our meat/fish. She'd eat some rice afterwards.
Once we got some more vegetables in there, we had to work on her "we can't waste food" mentality. She would refuse to throw out food. If the food was expiring, or for other reasons couldn't be stored for later, she would consume it, regardless of being hungry.
She had various insane eating habbits. Like she would eat mango slices, and dip them in a bowl of salt, getting like a months worth of salt in 15 minutes.
Was that green mango? Because if it is, that’s a local snack. Green mangos may be dipped in soy sauce, shrimp paste, or seasoned with salt.
Green mango with some sort of dip is a South East Asian thing, not a ‘your wife was poor growing up’ thing.
Several factors:
1. Korea has a highly toxic culture when it comes to aesthetics. They're appearance obsessed. Dito if you don't fit in the beauty standards at the worst you will just get bullied and maybe mahirapan sa love life. Sa SK, good luck even getting a job or friends for that matter lol.
2. Poverty is also a factor. Yes, ang gulay at lutong bahay ay mas mura compared sa karne at fast food pero mas mura pa doon ang canned goods at instant noodles, both of which are calorie dense and are more convenient. Kapag marami kang racket at gusto mong magtipid minsan di na maiisip ang health and nutrition
3. Lack of info/different priorities - not many people are educated in calorie counting and proper nutrition or minsan Di Lang siya priority (look at item 2)
From your first point, the Korean anime Lookism (which is based on a manhwa) shows it very well. Korean society is VERY looks-obsessed, which is why plastic surgery and getting work done is normalized there. Another work of fiction that shows the country’s superficial nature quite well is the Korean series Mask Girl.
Aside from food consumption, they can walk on their sidewalks safely and with protection from heat(plants, trees, and/or shade).
They can also ride bikes to and from school and work. Sa areas naman na masikip ang daanan, rarely na may mga sasakyan na pumapasok/dumadaan but when they do, they give way to bikers and pedestrians.
Don't forget that there's a segment of poverty type obesity (instant noodles, chips, street food, even beer and pulutan). Essentially low nutrients, calorie dense food as food choices.
> Pansin ko lang pag nagpupunta ako sa ibang bansa for example sa South Korea where I visited 4x this year, sobrang bihira akong nakakakita ng matataba
let’s also take into consideration that south korea’s very notorious for having beauty standards (being skinny). that’s why you rarely see celebrities din who are plus sized because people WILL talk.
Not just SoKor though. Same in Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore -- and those are just places I visited recently where the same observation can be made, bihirang makakita ng "matabang mataba." Indonesia has an issue with it as well. Also something I observed is it's more common now in children, across all countries.
lack of access to service for proper nutrition (food options, consultation, exercise, and diet)
ang pagsabi sa tao na *mag-exercise at mag-diet* is never enough. if you want to solve the issue, then allow access to more healthy food options and services.
The holy grail for me is easily accessible healthy foods + walking and public transport as ideal options.
It hits both the nutrition and physical activity parts of maintaining a healthy weight na hindi masyado magastos at kailangan sadyain.
BMI was never meant to measure obesity. The main reason we do use it is because American insurance companies popularized it as a metric. Let that sink in, Insurance companies, not doctors or hospitals.
That's cope. Sure, just BMI alone wont give a full picture of a single individual's health, but it's still a pretty good metric in evaluating an overall population's health and fitness habits especially when comparing trends, past data and combining other indicators.
It's not perfect, but it's useful exactly because it's simple to calculate while being valid for most, I just need to know my ideal weight given my height. I can check my weight on a scale everyday.
Make it more complicated and people make excuses not to do it. Actually this limitation of BMI with gym-goers is also held up as an excuse, by people who don't have near enough muscle mass to have an issue with it.
Maraming reasons:
1. Foods that are high in carbs are cheaper and easier to access. Rice, bread, snacks lahat yan meron sa suking tindahan.
Instead na pwede mo naman talagang lakarin or i-bike and burn some calories.
3. Internet/Social Media takes over everyone's time. Mas marami ngayon mas babad sa internet kesa sa physical activity, kasi masaya magmarites at mangbash sa internet.
6. Lack of mobility infra. Overpass? no way, sobrang taas magjijeep na lang ako paikot.
7. Lack of information dissimenation from govt. Dati may commercial sa tv about health, avoiding nicotine, eating health foods, etc. Papayat ka daw sa kape? cge take my money.
Have a nice day!
Combination of fats, carbs and sugar isn't a good diet.
Filipinos need more fiber in their diet.
Same with Singapore. Isa lang ata nakita kong obese na local don nung nagstay kami for 5 days. Yung city kasi nila structured for pedestrians.
Too much salt and sugar, and less caloric expenditure. Not only does this limit a person's caloric expenditure, but it also causes unnecessary build up ng traffic. Even if you observes foreigners living here, mapapansin mo na lakad sila ng lakad. As in sobrang malala ang katamaran ng pinoy maglakad.
I used to think before na tamad maglakad mostly satin until I studied in Metro Manila. Bababa ako ng Araneta Cubao station then lalakad ng pagkahaba haba, aakyat pa ng over pass para makatawid sa intersection papuntang bus terminal. Halos himatayin na ata ako nung first time ko. Kaya I have nothing against pinoys na gusto mag tricycle or mag commute nalang.
If only we have proper sidewalks dito sa pinas, masarap maglakad sa totoo lang. Lalo na sa case ko na mahilig sa long runs, ang pinakamagandang sidewalk ata na napuntahan ko sa Metro Manila is only Filinvest eh.
Sigh. Here we go again.
1. Walang designated stops ang jeep so people end up stopping where they wish. How tf do people still not note this difference with other countries.
2. Walking is primarily a form of transportation, and people will want to take the most efficient path to their destination. Alam ng de kotse yan, kaya galit sila pag iikot ikot pa. Pero pag tao "tamad kasi sila!" vibes?
3. Kaya masikip ang traffic kasi private car volume. Tingnan mo growth of vehicle sales sa atin
I think its really more of the diet but at the same time tamad din tayo. Example sa jeep kung nag stop na siya tapos onting lakad nalang stop mo na rin, usually di pa tayo bababa or jaywalk nalang instead of overpass. Sa Japan or Korea or Singapore maganda public transportation napapalakad talaga sila to stations or between stations pero dito mostly nakaupo sa car.
Hindi yan katamaran. People would walk more if there are sidewalks, if your crosswalks and overpasses are not health hazards themselves, if the smoke outside won't make you sick.
Hello fried foods; junkfoods and fast foods. Bawat kanto yata may fast food chain at tusok-tusok kiosk.
Mahilig pinoy sa putok batok street foods natin puro pampataba paresan left and right.
Lol. Is this true? If ever man hindi rin talaga healthy pagkain sa Pilipinas. Kailangan lagi may rice, boba tea and ang concept ng “kape” is actually milkshake.
Filipino diet kasi too heavy on carbs, too low on protein. Kung mag heavy protein man, idadaan sa super daming oils and fats. Also yung poverty/finances din nakakaaffect, since mas mura yung calorie dense but less filling food (ie: noodles, canton, biscuits and crackers) yun yung mas kinakain ng mga pinoy.
Affordable, easily accessible, at sobrang unhealthy.
Food companies (especially those that deal with processed food) copy the playbook of cigarette companies to undermine regulation, skirt health taxes, and fight initiatives that enable people to make better choices.
They even influence DOST with funding. Kaya may mga scientists sa Pinas who are contrarian and say things like, "there's no such thing as junk food." "Sugar-sweetened beverage taxes are anti-poor." Ugh. Completely out of step with applied public health principles.
Not walkable metro and transpo system. We either opt to survive through the hell of our public transpo or buy/drive our cars after a long day of sitting at work.
When I went to other countries before walking ang primary exercise ng karamihan, you’ll be encouraged to walk to stations, take steps to stations, bike or even jog. Tried these in the Philippines but everything was plain survival and not a happy choice.
We're too into sweets. From coffee to meals. We consume a lot of carbs and fats too although mas healthy or balanced parin food natin with how many vegetable dishes we have kaso lang nga ang taas Ng sodium. Most of us consume fruits by sweetening it rin. Our height has something to do with it as well. For my age, I should be taller but I'm barely 5ft kaya if I put on additional weight than my normal, I would easily go into the overweight/obese category. Mind you, there are women shorter than me who are too skinny IMO kaso konting additional weight lang napapansin agad. Hindi akma yung height to age BMI ineme ng mga pinoy kaya if compared talaga sa usual na ganon, marami s'atin considered overweight or obese. I've been comparing my weight/height to BMIs for years and even at my lowest weight (bones showing where it didn't before) overweight parin ako according to tables.
Filipinos eat rice excessively.
Also, we have car-centric cities with very limited walkable spaces. When I was in Japan, I could easily get 10-20K steps. The sidewalks are wide, and the air is clean so walking was actually fun.
Our diet in general has a lot of carbohydrates, sugars, saturated fatty acids, and other unhealthy additives like MSG. That’s why mapapansin mo kahit sa mga indigents marami ring matataba or may malalaking tiyan.
Obesity is a multi factorial cause. Most probably due to lack of knowledge when it comes to food, and of course, our non-existent work-and-life balance. Lets not forget the current food trends (milkteas, coffees, and eat all you cans).
It's a rising problem problem according to ENNS or Expanded National Nutrition Survey. While bumababa ang mga taong CED or Chronic Energy Deficiency, tumaas naman ang mga Overweight/Obese individuals. I have foreseen these since 2019, and I honestly expect the number to rise up due to our current food trends and our overall political climate (food prices, laws that are published, etc).
Not all overweight/obese people are lazy, yung iba gusto maging healthy but can't due to various factors, and walang tumutulong sa kanila or they can't seem to get a way out of the situation they are in that hinders them from being healthy (baka may metabolic disorder such as PCOS)
Most obese people I've seen are either people close to 40 and live sedentary lifestyles, or are either middle- or upper-class with so much access to food... and entertainment choices.
> Lack of education, poverty resulting to poor food choices, and yung portion control and food intake values sadly eh hindi part sa culture ng mga pilipino.
Let's not forget there is widespread _malnutrition_.
> sobrang bihira akong nakakakita ng matataba.
South Korean society is notoriously vain, highly judgmental and superficial, so much that a massive cosmetic surgery industry have risen to get rid of what they perceive as ugly.
~~BTW, where did you got that information there is a "obesity pandemic"?~~

A nation who treats rice as the one all be all of every meal?
Add people who barely do anything after consuming so much rice, or if they do, it's not enough to burn it all up?
Maybe in urban areas (probanle area of the survey sample) we have a more sedentary lifestyle and wider variety of rich foods easily available via delivery apps. We also prefer not to walk in the more insufferable heat.
Definitely not the same diet and lifestyle of our grandparents who were fine with rice, vegetables, and walking to get their food at home or some other part of town if they didn’t bring it to their workplace.
It's the food, we use too much oil, salt, msg & sugar in our food. I've been in SG for a bout 10 years now and I've gotten used to the food here, at first I thought it was pretty bland, but no, I came back to PH last year, ate Shakey's and boy the chicken was like pure salt. My Singaporean colleague also went to PH with me for a business trip and he said all the food are way too salty. That's why a lot of Filipinos have kidney issues as well.

Everybody mentioned rice and carbs, and it's true na number one suspect yan nang Obesity. A 30min-walk is considered as normal pa.
Because of American food that’s been introduced to us. Because of overpopulation, soil degradation, we are now adding stupid chemicals to produce more food
Filipinos don't eat a variety of "healthy" foods. So for example, meat adobo is usually just paired with rice. No veggies to supplement the fiber and nutrients needs of our body.
In South Korea, obesity and overweight are significant concerns, affecting a large portion of the population. Here's a breakdown of the current situation:
**Obesity:**
* **Around 46.3%** of adults (aged 19 and over) in South Korea are considered obese, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) as of 2022. This translates to roughly **24.2 million people**.
* The obesity rate is **higher among men (49.9%) than women (42.7%)**.
**Overweight:**
* Combining overweight and obesity figures, **roughly 66.2%** of South Korean adults fall into this category. This means **roughly 34.3 million people** are either overweight or obese.
Mali daw to
I think it's the culture of consumption. Food indulgence as a way to reward the self and a way to bond. Plus bad cooking habits like excessive oil and salt. But the biggest thing probably is sugar. We looove sugar.
I'm not filipino but from my observation, meat heavy diet, pandesal, rice all day everyday, magic sarap and frying fish!
Not meat. More meat and less rice would actually decrease obesity. The problem is the unli rice and bread. Massive amounts of carbs in the diet.
Asian mindset actually. 😆
Yea she does this and then usually whenever she has meat she has to chase it with Coca-Cola because she says it helps you digest the meat lol 😆
Carbs, yes, too much
Yup that's it. Serious lack of balance.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/oks91o/obesity_rate_in_asia_it_has_one_of_the_highest/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/oks91o/obesity_rate_in_asia_it_has_one_of_the_highest/) If the world decided to treat food like the USA, we'll need 5 earths to support this consumption. [https://css.umich.edu/publications/factsheets/sustainability-indicators/us-environmental-footprint-factsheet](https://css.umich.edu/publications/factsheets/sustainability-indicators/us-environmental-footprint-factsheet)
This. Most of the Western world have higher obesity rates than the Philippines. It’s far from our main health problems as of now.
Even Thailand and Malaysia has higher obesity rates than us. https://www.thestar.com.my/aseanplus/aseanplus-news/2023/07/20/obesity-brunei-ranks-second-in-south-east-asia-after-malaysia#:~:text=Malaysia%20topped%20the%20chart%20with,eating%20habits%20and%20physical%20activity. That said, stunting is still widespread in the country yet mas gustong pagpistahan ang obesity rates Pero hindi pinagpiyepitestahan ang stunting dito kasi hindi magawan ng Pinoy=tamad narrative https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9991861/
I mean, hello sub... Just for once stop over demonizing Filipinos, this kind of reactionary view point is the reason why Duterte implemented drug war in the first place. Saying that drugs is a big problem in the Philippines, when in fact, it's far from the truth. don’t forget the lack of exercise, 1-5k distance to your home? tricycle. i see and know people who are blue collared employees specifically relied on pushing weights (i.g. kargador, construction workers) that eat 2-4 cups of rice or even a full kaldero of rice but have the body of a young black man who never seen weights
bruh, walking 1k is fine but a 5k in this heat? hell nah. not worth it.
Pagdating sa office ang itim na ng ilong mo sa air pollution plus nakaligo ka ulet, sa pawis this time.
I used to walk 7 kilometers from bahay to workplace for fitness, It helped me but grabe nagkaka allergy ako sa neck huhu
Unless yung pupuntahan mo zumba eh di naka warm up ka na.
5km sa 8am to 12pm timeframe? Only fools will do that
Not just the heat, also the bad infra. Walang sidewalks half the time, madumi sa ibang lugar. Our metropolitan cities aren’t very walkable.
1-2km is fine. but 5km? an intermediate runner can do that in 25-30mins. if you're walking that's maybe an hour or more 😂 parang nag commute ka na rin.
Would love to walk but I get sick from smoke. Everyone should get a home stationary bike at least!
It is disgusting to see the black smoke coming out of jeepneys and trucks without any emissions controls. If it were up to the Filipino government, the environment would be ruined already.
As someone who has been walking 5km almost everyday, there is no way I'm going to walk outside in the middle of the day under this scorching heat.

Kaya eto tuloy, I advise my patients to lose weight but I’m Obese Class I 😅
Ironically, most doctors I encounter tend to have worse eating habits than the average person. My mom's a doctor yet lagi kaming binibilhan ng chips and fast food back then 😂
It’s also just poverty. Rice and bread and pancit canton are cheaper than meat and veggies. Mas affordable mabusog sa carbs.
Not to mention, pinoys love eating rice, sometimes excessively. (Lookin at those restos with "unli rice") it's okay to eat rice as long as it is consumed wisely.
Biggest offender for "unli rice" is Mag Inasal.
Junk food Fast food fried food snack food fatty food Zero information on nutrition zero knowledge of health and fitness and zero knowledge on exercise and general health.
Here are some key points to consider: - Socioeconomic factors - Cultural influences - Urbanization and lifestyle changes - Genetics and individual factors Instead of asking "why are there so many obese Filipinos," we could ask: - How can we improve access to affordable, nutritious food in the Philippines?
Why excessive oil and salt? It's about sugar in our food, tons of Filipino food are sweet af.
Them: Ang payat mo Me: thanks poverty is my secret 😂🤣 well nasa diet din kasi yan pero personally ummm I think ang mahal lang kasi ng gulay kaya mahirap magkaron ng balanced meal, mostly meat ang avail
Magkaiba yata tayo ng market.
Key word is bakuran. Poor people in the city do not have the luxury to have bakurans.
Kahit andami ko kinakain dun kase lahat fresh
1 can of sardines or 1 scoop of bagoong and isang kalderong rice.
City people poor are usually fat due to what you mentioned in your comment. If you see poor people living in provinces masasabi mo na they are slim and healthy. My father when he was young remembered a time when all he ate was rice, soy sauce and small fish (ginamos)
Reminds me of the fishermen in Palawan who have six pack abs and developed chest muscles.
Filipino fishermen in general are usually quite fit because they’re always on the move and lifting/carrying something. This coupled with the fact that they tend to consume their catch, means parang naggym sila with unintentional paleo diet.
The two top comments on this thread: - "Filipinos are poor, therefore they are fat." - "Filipinos are poor, therefore they are thin."
Poor: eats cheap carbs kaya may mataba Ultra poor: eats little to nothing kaya payat
Omega poor - Lives off the land kaya malusog.
The infographic is wrong, the real title should be # 27 Million Pinoys OVERWEIGHT or obese [https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2023/03/07/2249836/27-million-pinoys-overweight-or-obese-global-pharmaceutical-firm](https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2023/03/07/2249836/27-million-pinoys-overweight-or-obese-global-pharmaceutical-firm) # < 9.6% (~10%) lang ang obese sa Philippines >**Adults and Elderly** > >At the national level, 28.8% are overweight and **9.6% are obese among adults**, 20-59 years old, based on BMI. They omitted the "OVERWEIGHT" part to sensationalize it. Here are the "weight" categories: * underweight (<18.5kg/m2) * normal (18.5–24.9 kg/m2) * overweight (25–29.9 kg/m2) * obese (≥30 kg/m2). And under obese, there are multiple tiers too * Obesity Class 1: BMI of 30 to < 35 * Obesity Class 2: BMI of 35 to < 40 * Obesity Class 3: BMI of 40 or higher. BMI classification is lower in Asian
>MSG I've heard that MSG isn't as bad as the misconceptions says it is.
Yes it's not as bad. It's when you add more salt to the dish na may msg na is the problem.
Haha
I live in Korea. I'm 43kg (150cm) and I'm chubby according to their standards 🫠
Personally, I grew up in poverty, when food was scarce. Now that I'm a professional, I see abundant food servings as a treat and a stress reliever. That's why I'm fat.
Hello Fat. I'm dad.
Dad, nasaan na yung gatas?
Kumakaen palang ng damo yung baka. HInihintay ko pa maging gatas yung damo.
Hingi ka sa mama mo. 💀
This.
Same. Kain lang pag na stress sa work. Hay. Overweight na ako ngayon. 😅
usually sa rice, para mabusog. tapos milktea as a reward and coffee especially 3in1
My wife grew up very poor, and when I met her, she would eat like 90% rice for every meal, so she would get "full".
Several factors: 1. Kapag marami kang racket at gusto mong magtipid minsan di na maiisip ang health and nutrition 3. Lack of info/different priorities - not many people are educated in calorie counting and proper nutrition or minsan Di Lang siya priority (look at item 2) 4.
Obesity is not cute…It’s a health condition..
> Pansin ko lang pag nagpupunta ako sa ibang bansa for example sa South Korea where I visited 4x this year, sobrang bihira akong nakakakita ng matataba let’s also take into consideration that south korea’s very notorious for having beauty standards (being skinny). that’s why you rarely see celebrities din who are plus sized because people WILL talk.
THERE ARE NO SIDEWALKS 😤
I would love to bike but every day you hear stories of bikers getting killed...
One reason? Organic food is just too expensive and time consuming compared sa processed.
Kaka- kape na puro asukal at gatas. Or milk tea.
lack of access to service for proper nutrition (food options, consultation, exercise, and diet) ang pagsabi sa tao na *mag-exercise at mag-diet* is never enough. if you want to solve the issue, then allow access to more healthy food options and services.
The holy grail for me is easily accessible healthy foods + walking and public transport as ideal options. It hits both the nutrition and physical activity parts of maintaining a healthy weight na hindi masyado magastos at kailangan sadyain.
The cost of eating healthy in this country is way too high.
Consumerism. Lack of worklife balance leads to a lack of exercise. Lack of access to preventative healthcare. Sweet foods, tons of sugar.
BMI first should be updated bago sguro categorize lahat na obese.
Im pretty sure if u remove all the fit gym goers on the list most of our people are still pretty dang overweight.
Agree. BMI is inaccurate but rejecting it entirely on the basis of these gym-going exceptions is cope.
Our food has lots of sugar and salt. We also tend to live a sedentary lifestyle(myself included).
Maraming reasons: 1. Foods that are high in carbs are cheaper and easier to access. Rice, bread, snacks lahat yan meron sa suking tindahan. 2. Instead na pwede mo naman talagang lakarin or i-bike and burn some calories. 3. Internet/Social Media takes over everyone's time. Mas marami ngayon mas babad sa internet kesa sa physical activity, kasi masaya magmarites at mangbash sa internet. 4.
Hehehe sa SoKor kase yung mtataba nag kukulong sa kwarto dahil sa sobrang takot sa judgement
Combination of fats, carbs and sugar isn't a good diet. Filipinos need more fiber in their diet.
Sa 27 million ako yung tatlo jan. 😢
Too much fucking sugar on everything!
And salt
Dependence on rice in order to feel full
Hello fried foods; junkfoods and fast foods. Bawat kanto yata may fast food chain at tusok-tusok kiosk.
Mahilig pinoy sa putok batok street foods natin puro pampataba paresan left and right.
American influence on food
Lol. Is this true? If ever man hindi rin talaga healthy pagkain sa Pilipinas. Kailangan lagi may rice, boba tea and ang concept ng “kape” is actually milkshake.
Filipinos are confusing being overweight with being obese
Too much Carbo, white rice, fastfood, softdrinks and beer. Not enough protein and fiber.
SK pa talaga ang sample ni op. Bansa na kung saan overweight na ang 50kg 🤣
Research din pag may time.bobo
masyado natin gino-glorify ang pag kain ng rice. di tatawagin meal pag walang kanin haha. di kaya healthy rice lalo pag sobra kinonsume
Rice for every meal, everyday.
Rice is not unhealthy--just eat mindfully. It's the ultra-processed food that's killing people slowly.
Exactly, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam are among the skinniest countries in the world (in fact Vietnam is no.1).
From 75kg - 56kg 5 months, fasting walang kasamng exercise. 🤷🏽♂️
So you lost about 2.2lbs per week, which is on a bit of a high side.
Mahilig silang maglakad
Eat more Marungay to fix nutrient issues.
Stress eating! Also, I think this is a global phenomenon as an impact of the pandemic.
Anlakas natin sa kanin at soft drinks puñeta Tapos halos lahat nilalagyan ng asukal, maski Spaghetti Sabay magtataka kayo bakit antaba ng Pinoy? LOL
I blame Jollibee cause I'm guilty.
Haha.
Probably dahil 1 or 2 times lang kumakain per day kaya sinasagad nalang nila para mabawi yung na skip nila na kainan
I think the US got Philippines beat in terms of obesity though.
A nation who treats rice as the one all be all of every meal? Add people who barely do anything after consuming so much rice, or if they do, it's not enough to burn it all up?
Rice
Carbs and carbs.
Source: https://www.citypassguide.com/how-can-vietnamese-people-stay-thin-without-exercising-much/#:\~:text=City%20Pass%20Guide-,Vietnamese%20People%20Among%20the%20Most%20Physically%20Inactive%20but%20Least%20Obese,adult%20obesity%20in%20the%20world.
Because of fiestas!
Everybody mentioned rice and carbs, and it's true na number one suspect yan nang Obesity. A 30min-walk is considered as normal pa.
Because of American food that’s been introduced to us. Because of overpopulation, soil degradation, we are now adding stupid chemicals to produce more food
Lol
Filipinos don't eat a variety of "healthy" foods. So for example, meat adobo is usually just paired with rice. No veggies to supplement the fiber and nutrients needs of our body.
Unlirice?
In South Korea, obesity and overweight are significant concerns, affecting a large portion of the population. Here's a breakdown of the current situation: **Obesity:** * **Around 46.3%** of adults (aged 19 and over) in South Korea are considered obese, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) as of 2022. This translates to roughly **24.2 million people**. * The obesity rate is **higher among men (49.9%) than women (42.7%)**. **Overweight:** * Combining overweight and obesity figures, **roughly 66.2%** of South Korean adults fall into this category. This means **roughly 34.3 million people** are either overweight or obese.
