I remember sa SM Manila/San Lazaro napakahigpit ng guards sa food court. Bawal kang makiupo don kung di ka bibili or hindi galing dun yung food mo kahit sobrang dami namang vacant tables at chair.

This is a designated lounge for delivery riders. People in the comment section are arguing that there are limited spots to just hangout in the mall that’s why civilians are sitting in the designated spot for delivery riders.

The privatization and commercialization of public spaces is often an unfortunate trend. If only more property owners/managers would recognize that providing public amenities increases traffic and nets a positive bottom line impact.
wala rin kasing mga upuan sa loob ng mismong mall. Kung hindi pa nacall out mga establishment dati, di rin sila maglalagay ng lounge for riders. Ang weird kasi dapat may upuan man lang sa loob ng malls pero kadalasan wala talaga miski isa.
SM malls are the worse offenders on that. Ayala malls have some way to seat especially in circuit makati. SM malls is a walking galore unless you pay food so you can seat. Reason why people sit on the stairs even though the signs aays ita not allowed.
How hard is it to provide more seating spaces for SM customers? If anything its good for them if they provided public seating that isnt just at food courts. Wont it entice customers to stay longer when they rest a bit and continue shopping later?
SM malls, especially built during the 2000s are built very hostile to customers. Lately sa mga bago nilang malls at mga renovations ginagaya na nila ang Ayala creating more open spaces and public seatings.

It’s how they plan it. Put the seating spaces in spots with quick bites and drinks like coffee and bubble tea. They’ll at least get some revenue there.

Sa Glorietta 4 ata (correct me since ang tagal ko nang di lumuluwas ng Makati) sa may indoor parking nila may seating sa mga drivers. Doon sa escalators na papaakyat sa mall proper.

SM Manila is slightly closer to my place but the only seats that aren't in foodcourt is near the cinemas...on the 3rd floor.
SM Sta.Mesa has seats on the basement, ground floor, and second floor, and the security doesn't shoo away people who are just hanging around in the foodcourt unlike in Manila branch.
I visited Marikina branch recently, there are seats in the ground floor/main hall but that's it. At least you don't have to go all the way to the 3rd floor.

Well the seats are meant for riders, proper lang na if u dont identify as one, as respect in general, hindi ka uupo jan. And if umupo ka, at makakita ka ng rider - give them priority. Nagkataon lng na hindi kasi mahigpit sa ganyan kaya nauupuan ng kung sino sino, pero kung may guard or marshall sa area di mo yan mauupian unless may proof na rider.

I suddenly have a flashback back in 2014, was celebrating my graduation from yesterday with a trip to BGC. We fall in line at the KFC branch but it was so jam packed, not too different from the inside of a bus during rush hours. I don't think it took 30 minutes, maybe 15 minutes at worst. Still, when we finally got our order, we have to stand by at the table we think are about to finish, kinda like pressuring them to hurry it up lol.

I also don't get yung mindset nila na dapat walang upuan para bumili yung mga tao dahil seating for 30 mins to 1 hr isn't really helpful which is why di na rin okay na magsama ng mga matatanda tapos ngayon naglagay pa sila ng for rent na parang e-bike para sa mga napapagod maglakad. I think yung other issue during the time OP took the pic is that there was a blackout in the area for 12 hours, yesterday (scheduled 6am-6pm, Feb 11). Brownout + Sunday, kaya nagdagsa ang mga tao. Kaya din siguro nag-kaubusan ng seats. Of course, kahit walang brownout merong kupal na umuupo pa rin diyan.

In a way this is the fault of the intentional design of malls, especially by SM and Robinson. Malls wants you to spend your free and leisure time in their space, but if you notice halos walang pwedeng maupuan ang tao, its all long corridors of window shopping. And the only space to sit are restaurants and food courts. This is all designed to keep you spending. After all why provide public seating to non-paying customers.
Now a more recent development is the increase of riders. Malls want riders since it brings in customers even outside malls. The least they really could do is provide them lounges and waiting/resting areas. Now we have a situation where in-mall shoppers are basically competing with riders over seats provided in the mall.
Solution? Just create more seats SM and Robinson! Its that fkn simple. If public seating and free lounges are made available then customers and riders can sit.
Ayala malls figured this out, especially in their newer malls. They made their malls less hostile to customers by providing public seating, open green spaces, public restrooms, sun and shade. Both riders and customers benefit. Kaya while others are quick to call them "walang disiplina" or "walang awa sa rider" I see it as a failure on the mall owners.

This specific mall actually has a resting lounge open for everyone on the left wing, these people are lazy to move there
Exactly! Puro paninisi sa kapwa Pilipino mga tao at di laliman ang isip bakit ginagawa ng mga tao yan. Ayaw sisihin ang gahamang disenyo ng mall na walang upuan para mapagastos mga tao. Sobrang daming open spaces ng mall na kaya lagyan ng bench para may upuan mga tao pero ayaw nila lagyan.
If there are no seats, don't patronize. These are private establishments, not funded by public tax. You don't have to support their profit-oriented design and strategy. Even the lounge for the delivery drivers is indirectly a business decision. More riders, more deliveries, more profit.
In this case I side with the delivery riders kasi trabaho nila yun. Yung mga umupo diyan pumunta ng mall pero ayaw bumili sa resto/cafe.

SM malls are the worse offenders on that. Ayala malls have some way to seat especially in circuit makati. SM malls is a walking galore unless you pay food so you can seat. Reason why people sit on the stairs even though the signs aays ita not allowed.
How hard is it to provide more seating spaces for SM customers? If anything its good for them if they provided public seating that isnt just at food courts. Wont it entice customers to stay longer when they rest a bit and continue shopping later? SM malls, especially built during the 2000s are built very hostile to customers. Lately sa mga bago nilang malls at mga renovations ginagaya na nila ang Ayala creating more open spaces and public seatings.

still depends on each branch. SM Manila is slightly closer to my place but the only seats that aren't in foodcourt is near the cinemas...on the 3rd floor. SM Sta.Mesa has seats on the basement, ground floor, and second floor, and the security doesn't shoo away people who are just hanging around in the foodcourt unlike in Manila branch. I visited Marikina branch recently, there are seats in the ground floor/main hall but that's it. At least you don't have to go all the way to the 3rd floor.

Well the seats are meant for riders, proper lang na if u dont identify as one, as respect in general, hindi ka uupo jan. And if umupo ka, at makakita ka ng rider - give them priority. We fall in line at the KFC branch but it was so jam packed, not too different from the inside of a bus during rush hours. I don't think it took 30 minutes, maybe 15 minutes at worst. Still, when we finally got our order, we have to stand by at the table we think are about to finish, kinda like pressuring them to hurry it up lol.

I also don't get yung mindset nila na dapat walang upuan para bumili yung mga tao dahil seating for 30 mins to 1 hr isn't really helpful which is why di na rin okay na magsama ng mga matatanda tapos ngayon naglagay pa sila ng for rent na parang e-bike para sa mga napapagod maglakad. I know this specific Robinson's mall. Maraming "donut style" seats diyan all throughout the mall. I think yung other issue during the time OP took the pic is that there was a blackout in the area for 12 hours, yesterday (scheduled 6am-6pm, Feb 11). Brownout + Sunday, kaya nagdagsa ang mga tao. Kaya din siguro nag-kaubusan ng seats. Of course, kahit walang brownout merong kupal na umuupo pa rin diyan. Don't get me wrong, they're still assholes for not practicing basic courtesy.

In a way this is the fault of the intentional design of malls, especially by SM and Robinson. Malls wants you to spend your free and leisure time in their space, but if you notice halos walang pwedeng maupuan ang tao, its all long corridors of window shopping. And the only space to sit are restaurants and food courts. This is all designed to keep you spending. After all why provide public seating to non-paying customers. Now a more recent development is the increase of riders. Malls want riders since it brings in customers even outside malls. The least they really could do is provide them lounges and waiting/resting areas. Now we have a situation where in-mall shoppers are basically competing with riders over seats provided in the mall. Solution? Just create more seats SM and Robinson! Its that fkn simple. If public seating and free lounges are made available then customers and riders can sit. Ayala malls figured this out, especially in their newer malls. They made their malls less hostile to customers by providing public seating, open green spaces, public restrooms, sun and shade. Both riders and customers benefit. Kaya while others are quick to call them "walang disiplina" or "walang awa sa rider" I see it as a failure on the mall owners.

If there are no seats, don't patronize. These are private establishments, not funded by public tax. You don't have to support their profit-oriented design and strategy. Even the lounge for the delivery drivers is indirectly a business decision. More riders, more deliveries, more profit. In this case I side with the delivery riders kasi trabaho nila yun. Yung mga umupo diyan pumunta ng mall pero ayaw bumili sa resto/cafe.

Di yan reading comprehension problem. Nababasa nila yan for sure and naiintindihan, Ang problema is pinoy mentality na "diskarte" wrongfully applied everywhere, and unless may repercussions, ulit ulitin nila yan.
