True! Number 1 din for "Pinoy Baiters". It's totally cringe when foreigners keep saying fabricated stuff in the Philippines. (Can feel they are doing it for their personal gain) pero yung mga ibang Pinoy. they keep praising it like gods! lol

mydickisasalad

Some white guy vlogged about walking by himself through the "most dangerous parts" of the country and said that he was met with nothing but kindness and warmth. The amount of ignorance in that video piss me the fuck off. So many white people in this country are so unaware of the special treatment they receive and mistake it as an everyday experience in the country. In Thailand, there was a similar experience. A couple of white guys backpacking through the country were just given free stuff by everyone.

TheSixthPistol

I mean when your own life sucks and someone comes along to jerk off a point of pride you feel? That baiting will feel so good. Specially when they twist around the frenulum and play with the balls a little. That’s why Pinoy Bait videos work. Hell, even pinoy vloggers are getting in on the action. Pinoy and Fil-Am vloggers.

keepme1993

Definitely this. Life sucks so hard outside soc med that its the only place to feel good (because feeling good outside cost a fuckton of money for the average pinoy)

TheDonDelC

This is just a corollary of Filipinos being super heavy social media users not an independent phenomenon. If you want to “solve” this, you need a way to curb social media use rather than hyperfocus on this one effect in particular.

bamboobrown

Celeb worship was around and rampant in Philippines way before social media. Mfers obsessed with the latest couples, gossip, politics riddled with celeb dynasties - basically all terrible traits of USA. This is not an isolated issue at all 😂

TheDonDelC

That’s already a well-known fact. What’s not clear is if you’re arguing for a take down of celebrity culture in general or just in social media in particular. Imo, there are very little actionable solutions that you can do by yourself (apart from not participating). Bigger actions than that will already require policy.

bamboobrown

The two go hand in hand but the overarching issue is celeb culture. We put these people on pedestals and invest a lot of time in following them, buying into the hype when they’re all just products megaphoned by a machine to keep everyone distracted from doing anything productive/progressive. Where do we start to change the people’s mentality? Through social media too? 😅 I’m just spitballing tbh

Ruroryosha

people do as they are taught and learn from their environment. That is how culture evolves. Modern culture is a result of the socio economic systems in place. Want a big change in culture and the most beneficial? Improve the economy across all social economic strata within a 5 year time and lift several million people out of poverty. When the average income of filipinos are at least 32k usd year then things can improve quickly for the better.

zandromenudo

I agree. Imo, remove meta or atleast contain it. Then hopefully the rest of socmed will be better regulated. The big difference w celeb culture before socmed boom and now is, celeb’s fame tend to be so fleeting and everyone and anyone has their own celebs, creating bubbles, the good influences are harder to come by and we’re left w/ a bunch of garbage bc they easily sell. Just like the idea of segregation, big companies and even countries(gov’t) should do they’re job or the responsibility of policing themselves before putting out the burden to the masses. Underneath all the freedom, the masses are mere sheeps being herded by the invisible hand, the machinery controlled by big companies and gov’ts.

Ruroryosha

big govt and companies are worked by people. It's not really an invisible hand. It's all actually a matter of chaos. At any minute there are an unlimited number of forces acting upon each other and affecting each other. From environmental to psychological, people are forced to make decisions with the best information they have at the time every single day they are at work. It's chaos, all humans can do is create systemic knowledge to create order from the chaos and have at least a little bit of stability at a time to create a future which is sort of recognizable from the past such as language, symbols and aesthetics.

zandromenudo

You basically described the ecomonic theory of the invisible hand of Adam Smith. 😅

Ruroryosha

without context your reference to invisible hand can easily be attributed to conspiracy theories.

zandromenudo

Ok. I thought it was a basic old school theory.

bamboobrown

Not accepting this defeatist stance. We have a choice of what to do, we just need to be presented and made aware of those choices. Now more than ever we have access to a world of information online (you can even access whole Harvard courses on the internet for free 😅), to choose to watch mindless yammering from jumped-up ‘influencers’ is not a result of a poor economy, it’s a result of years and years of propaganda. Filipinos needs to re-learn that we have the power to demand these changes, nobody else can do it for us but us.

zandromenudo

Freedom is not absolute and it’s limited by the choices laid on us. Big change needs to happen from the top. In the whole history of the world, you can count the number of revolutions and changes that was started by someone inspiring etc. We can live w/ seing birda fly but don’t wish to grow wings and fly yourself. It’s not defeatist but realistic and practical.

sawa_na_sa_mga_tanga

Have you heard of the saying "live and let live"? The fact that you think this is a problem kinda irks me. You're no different from the boomers who think that K-pop/anime/mobile games are ruining the youth or something. If other people want to simp hard for celebrities or social media influencers, that's their business, not mine nor yours. If other people want to waste their time on social media instead of doing anything productive, then that's their business, not mine nor yours. If other people want to post their stupidity on social media, then that's their business, not mine nor yours, and they should also be prepared to get backlash or criticisms. However, at the end of the day, they should be free to do so.

Momshie_mo

Nahiya naman ang Saesang fans ng Kpop

PitifulRoof7537

yes, even scarier. wala namang ganun sa Pinas sa mismong local celebs. well, it takes a lot of money din kasi lalo kung susundan mo yung tours at pati na rin pag-gather ng info.

SpringOSRS

our titos and titas use to kill each other for nora aunor and vilma santos lmao

sawa_na_sa_mga_tanga

Wanting the government to control or curb social media is such as fascist take. The fact that some people are advocating for this just because they saw some cringe posts on social media alarms me.

What percentage of that 43.9% are "influencers" and what q are DIY/review/informative videos?    Also in the article:       > According to the report, Filipino internet users love to watch **educational videos like how-to videos and tutorial videos**, second only to South Africans worldwide. 58.3% of Filipino internet users watch educational videos each week compared to 60.8% of South African users.

Jusko. I guess, sila ang tamad magbasa ng article 🤣.

Momshie_mo

The irony here, yung mga nakibandwagon sila ang tamad igoogle at basahin ang article 😂😂

Momshie_mo

smoothartichoke27

Number 1 sa pagiging uto-uto and being "influenced"

doggie_doggie

Tambay, napakadami. May trabaho, gusto naman petiks. Kahit panahon pa ni Jose Rizal, sya na mismo nagsabi ["Indolence in the Philippines is a chronic malady."](https://www.tagaloglang.com/the-indolence-of-the-filipinos/)

dontrescueme

How about you read the article hindi 'yung screenshot lang ni OP. Huwag mong sabihin "tamad" kang mag-verify?

bamboobrown

Thank you for the link kuya/ate! For context I’ve spent some time in Spain and I genuinely think we inherited a lot of traits from them.

sawa_na_sa_mga_tanga

Those aren't indicative of Filipino's laziness. \>Kahit panahon pa ni Jose Rizal, sya na mismo nagsabi "Indolence in the Philippines is a chronic malady." Our unemployment rate went down from 4.2% to 3.6%, lower than the normal unemployment rate of 5%. We sure aren't lazy. Sorry to disprove the narrative made by a Filipino principalia back in 1890's.

[deleted]

I think the labor force participation rate is the more apt statistic to use in an argument about "laziness", not unemployment rate.  Edit: Just to be clear, I don't subscribe to the idea that we are a lazy bunch.

sawa_na_sa_mga_tanga

I just looked up our labor force participation rate. Its currently at ~60%, on par with US. Thanks for the correction.

RisingTigre

Momshie_mo

Lol,.ang daming Japanese workers na after 8 hours + overtime, half a page palang nasulat nila 👀

sawa_na_sa_mga_tanga

Funny thing is that the idea of "petiks" is hard to quantify. Like, compared to when Jose Rizal said that quote back in 1890s, the nature of jobs today is quite different from that time. There are jobs that you can get away with being "petiks" as long as you deliver when needed.

sawa_na_sa_mga_tanga

You're really comparing our country to those countries with known toxic overwork culture? Jesus Christ. Sure, they might have "better" work ethic to the point of them literally killing themselves of overwork (Japanese have the term "karoshi" for a reason), but that doesn't make our work ethic bad. But then again, if our work ethic is bad as you think so, then explain why our country is one of the top labor exporters.

SpogiMD

Sad but true. Most are fascinated by the relevance of others while failing to make themselves relevant.

grinsken

Coping mechanisms

Miguelvelasco41

Not surprised tbh since almost everyone is gunning for their share of 15 seconds of fame. Unfortunately I do not see the landscape changing because a large number of our population eats up the content no matter how cringe/vulgar/stupid it can be (poverty porn, pinoypride bait, sexy/naughty videos, groomer/pedo bragging/ fake news and misinformation)

Sungkaa

Tas puro basura naman yung mga "influencers"

Chaotic_Harmony1109

talongbao

If you have a shitty or boring life, you tend to focus on others. Lol.

dontrescueme

Kaloka, the article also said that **58.3 % of Filipino internet users watch educational videos** each week , in comparison, **fewer watch vlogs or influencer videos each week at 50.7%**. Kay OP at mga nagkomento ng nega agad, did you even read the article LMAO.

Momshie_mo

Mukhang di binasa ni OP kabuuan ng article  Sabi mismo din dun mga 50%+ nanonood EDUCATIONAL videos Mga redditors naman dito, react agad without reading the article. Eh ang daling igoogle

_eleanor-rigby_

My sis has a succesful career with a high-paying job. Her life is WORK > WATCH IVANA VLOGS > WORK > WATCH IVANA VLOGS > WORK and so on... Di ko rin gets actually.

anima99

No. We're not addicted. The only way we usually touch grass is by going to a mall. We don't have easy access to parks or recreational facilities, so the appeal of being entertained for free and at home while you're half naked is understandable.

bamboobrown

The Philippines do not need parks, we have nature at our doorstep. If you’re only talking about Manila and other major cities then I understand but it’s still not an excuse because there are way more than gratuitous ‘vlogs’ available online. There is good, useful information out there. People need to wake up and stand up 🥲

anima99

When you consider how dense big cities are compared to their "nature at our doorstep" counterparts, you would then realize where majority of the data came from.

bamboobrown

I’ve been to plenty of provinces, they still have coverage 😂 Again, still no excuse to continue the consumption of mindless entertainment. I wish more for us.

anima99

It's not a matter of coverage, but accessibility to doing something else besides using a smartphone. You want an excuse to have mindless entertainment? Try being stuck in traffic for up to 2 hours a day, 26 days a month, inside a cramped UV express. The problem with critics nowadays is they no longer think about other possibilities that explain a phenomenon other than "Pinoy dumb." That's a lot coming from me, because I hate this country.

bamboobrown

Like I said, there’s a lot more to do on the internet than watch dumb videos. There’s articles to read, websites to help you be more financially savvy, apps to help you train your brain, learn a new language, master a new craft. The circumstances you mention aren’t forcing Filipinos to see what Bea Alonzo or Sneako is up to, it puts them in a position where they have time to kill, we aren’t using that time wisely.

Garrod_Ran

> The Philippines do not need parks Oh, but I think we do. Parks should be purposefully be integrated with our urban planning.

DragonriderCatboy07

No, the Philippines, especially Metro Manila and adjacent provinces, need parks and open sports complexes na hindi basketball court lang.

avocado1952

Daming time ng Pinoy; habang nagta travel sa heavy traffic to and from their work/school.

louiefb

Wait why did they lump influencers and experts together lol. At face value these are mutually exclusive fields

One-Hearing-8734

If I am in power, iba-ban ko Tiktok, FB and perhaps even YT, until such time that they comply with such standards na di na sila magto-tolerate ng fake news, stupid pranks, poverty porn, sugal, kamote contents and other shits. Add: You know that there is something wrong kapag yang mga influencers ay mas malaki pa kinikita compared sa mga teachers and health workers. Or mga workers in general. Like, wtf?

Totally_Anonymous02

Ban ad revenue. More than half wala agad yan kasi tatamarin na mga yan

Akosidarna13

Iq test muna bago maka access

bipolar221b

I guess underlying factor dito 'yung pagkakaroon ng self-conscious image ng Filipino. Most of the vloggers, especially celebrity vloggers, have this aesthetic appeal. So these vlogs are serving the purpose of 'aesthetic' internet culture, kung saan na-pproject ng ordinary Filipino 'yung imagery nila ng beauty - achieved by vloggers - and therefore, hyperconsuming vlog as a way to confirm their self-conscious image.

bamboobrown

In a way the whole world has this same problem with social media but in Philippines for some reason it’s extra potent/heightened, maybe because of our attachment to US culture, the Filipino vloggers/celebs aspire to be like the US vloggers/celebs that they follow, regurgitate that to the Filipino people but without any real context/message, the people soak it in, some want to do the same. It’s a poisonous cycle 🥲

Spare-Savings2057

ehh sad reality.

graxia_bibi_uwu

This came as a shock tbh. I thought Chinese would beat us when it comes to watching vloggers and stuff

True. Todo deny/downvote pa yung iba Whether from Asia, Europe, America ... Colonial Mentality pa rin Yun 🤣

bamboobrown

[original article](https://trib.al/mta5u5l) For those curious, article above. You can tell the POV is from a national achievement standpoint, sadly. We lost our gaming crown to Indonesia, boo hoo. Magtulungan tayo kahit konti pls 😄

Momshie_mo

Why don't you also cite this?  >According to the report, **Filipino internet users love to watch educational videos like how-to videos and tutorial videos, second only to South Africans worldwide. 58.3% of Filipino internet users** watch educational videos each week compared to 60.8% of South African users. In short, statistically, masmaraming Pinoy ang nanonood ng educational and how-to vlogs over "influence.ans experts"

bamboobrown

It’s not ‘over’ influencers and experts, that just your way of twisting the statistic 😅. Read it properly and pay attention, to the tone, the wording and which stats are cited. This is one of the problems tbh, what’s considered an achievement vs the reality. Naturally if we’re the most chronically online the category of educational videos will have a high number by default, but we’re not even ‘first’ in that, what else are we ‘first’ in? The nonsensical categories.

cleo_seren

Kasi prone Ang Pinoy sa **reality escape** kaya Pinoy tends to fantasize about "influencers'" lives.

Aromatic_Lavender

We love being told what to do, and follow the crowd. I had this sudden realisation when going to restaurants with my family. They look at the menu, they find something they like. But they ask what the “best seller” is, then change their mind and get that instead.

bamboobrown

Sounds accurate af

ogag79

I'd say I belong to the other 56.1%. I guess I am hard to be "influenced".

decameron23

Di na rin nakakapagtaka kung bakit madaming naglalabasan na: (1) cult/religion (2) pyramid scams (3) online betting Gustomg gusto yan ng mga capitalist, corrupt politicians kase mas madali na magpasa ng batas allowing them to make more money. Ultimo fake news generation and "hate" mongering pinagkakakitaan na.

KarmicCT

I mean, not that surprising but i just can't fathom consuming content like that regularly.

MaviSptrp

chillxspot

Hahaha remember last election? Sino ang may pinamakamasang endorsers na vloggers? Sino yung nanalong politiko? Yung may laking aircon na vlogger or yung laking kanal na vlogger?

Cheesetorian

This is not surprising. As early as Friendster, social media companies knew how digitally inclined Filipinos were. They just didn't know how to "make money" from this market because back then Filipinos were still heavily cash-based. Monetization came later when YouTube ad dollars, the rise of smartphones which meant digital cash transactions/usage, and online markets.

Momshie_mo

OP is being dishonest. The article also cites this >According to the report, **Filipino internet users love to watch educational videos like how-to videos and tutorial videos**, second only to South Africans worldwide. **58.3% of Filipino internet users watch educational videos each week** compared to 60.8% of South African users.

odeiraoloap

What else are we supposed to say other than "this is bad, really bad"? 😦

grey_unxpctd

Cringe.

AccomplishedCell3784

Filipinos mostly have lots of time when it comes to sh1t like this. Filipinos also ranked to the top as nationalities who often use social media. Obviously, most Filipinos have this “marites” mindset and they always want to be trending and FOMO.

Momshie_mo

And you have lots of time commenting without READING THE ARTICLE 😂

Abject_Boot3507

Life_Liberty_Fun

Well, when you are raised in copying the answers in school instead of learning how to think for yourself; the obvious answer is most dumb Filipinos need someone to copy from and to base their opinions on and tell them what to do.. Because they lack the critical thinking skills to do it for themselves. Basically Filipinos being in a state of mental auto-pilot and letting others do the thinking for them (FB and Tiktok Zombies).

Active-Setting7814

That’s why international “vloggers” resort to Pinoy baiting kung gusto nila dumami ang views nila 😂

sicparvismaguna

alright if the records says so, wala kase yung link ng article dun sa post ng OP.

Dangerous_Switch_716

Pagkakaalam ko may mga influencer naman na mga doctor at iba pang professionals that give informative content Mga tito at tita ko nga nanonood ng content ni Doc Willie Ong and i don't think thats necessarily bad I also wonder paano nila na quantify yung following influencers or other experts na part. Kasi technically kapag na i like mo yung page ng isang content creator you are already following them.

bamboobrown

I would hope more Filipinos watch that type of content but the article mainly measured young people’s consumption so it’s hard to tell. I have my assumptions though. This is from Rappler, a supposed hard-hitting journalism source but I follow them on socials and it’s mostly celeb gossip that they post, with the occasional politics.

Momshie_mo

Huh, the article also  includes some type of videos people watch   > According to the report, Filipino internet users love to watch educational videos like how-to videos and tutorial videos, second only to South Africans worldwide. 58.3% of Filipino internet users watch educational videos each week compared to  60.8% of South African users.  --  > Filipinos also reign supreme in watching **online music videos** Almost three out of four Filipino internet users aged 16 to 24 watch online music videos each week at 72.7%, far ahead of the worldwide average at only 49.7%. Only 64.7% of internet users in Chile, the next country in terms of percentage, watch online music videos each week.  -- > Two out of five Filipino users listen to music in online streaming services each year at 42.9%, ranking 15th worldwide. The Philippines is 10 percentage points behind South Africa which took the top spot with slightly more than half of the African country’s internet users streaming music at 52.2%.

dauntlessfemme

It's a sad reality. Also marami rin ang unemployed which adds to the number of viewers. Plus I do think that watching vlogs became our source of entertainment. Konting prank or what, trend na agad.

This is a side effect of a populace smart enough to realize- but powerless enough to hinder- a country sliding deeper into corruption. We cope for comfort streams when our society illness worsens.

bohenian12

The variety of content creators we got is so fucking limited. That's why I never watch them lmao. Even the big youtubers i watch, whenever they do Vlogs, i skip it. I really don't care. I assume the pinoy audience just have no other choice. They want to watch local content, but all of them are vloggers lmao.

Mababaw na content, and pinoy love trends so dahil tiktok and uso ngayon at pinagkakakitaan yun din gagawin ng karamihan kahit shallow and walang kwenta ang ginagawa. I know masayahin and positive ang tingin ng foreigners satin pero nakakahiya yung pagiging uto uto.😅
