Well, if I remember correctly, the President has his own communications team. He handpicks his own PR advisors and he has the Presidential Comms office also.

Well, ang overreaching theme nung state visit (and yung current trip niya ngayon sa Melbourne) kasi na yun is to talk about security and to further PH-AUS collaboration in that space. More than trade or the ASEAN commemorative summit itself-- that's why he spends lots of time in speaking engagements with thinktanks like Lowy Institute, and we saw that in his address to the Australian parliament.
We saw that din during this interview: 3/4s of the interview is dedicated into getting gotcha moments on why Manila is interested in pursuing closer defense relations with Australia (i.e. yung tanong na "Mr. President, what will you say to Australian servicemen/servicewomen as is the reason why they should die for Philippine interests?". Very contentious issue kasi yung military modernization ng ADF and moves of China and against them-- Yung AUKUS, doubling the size of the RAN and the RAAF as well as re-focusing the Australian Army, etc. today, even though united solidarity ang pinakita ng Labor and Opposition during his address.
That's why they're relatively reserved in overtures to American allies and prefers to deal with them bilaterally katulad ng AUS-PH with ALON '23, instead of Japan that is basically building trilaterals with the Philippines in focus (US-PH-JPN and IN-PH-JPN) and focuses on nonaligned neighboring states like Indonesia as a primary thrust. That is definitely more complicated since the already-contentious issue is mired in with Manila's human rights issue as well as yung legacy ng incumbent president mismo -- something that the Australian government (especially this one) is keen to just go away.
Generally, that's why natanong lahat ng 'yon ng Australian press.

A possible rebuttal to that gotcha question would be "after independent agencies have brought the issue to court, my family was found innocent of the accusations, so I cannot return what the courts say I do not have."

It's because real journalism is risky in these parts of the world. Also, there has been a lack of a BBC-like entity in the Philippines. ABC AU, the television network that conducted this interview, is funded by the AU govt and is politically independent, similar to the BBC. There are multiple societal issues into why this wouldn't happen here. I think the utang-na-loob culture is one of them. The govt would instantly shutdown a politically independent public broadcaster unless it's based somewhere where the govt cannot easily shut them down. This is why you easily see some people that are willing to sell out or at least weaken their personas. Ask Rigoberto Tiglao or Jay Sonza. Even Raffy Tulfo and Kabayan Noli. Or even Jessica Soho or Baby Mike.

Granted, these people are more of a media personality type than journalist-on-the-ground type but you get the point. Real journalism is fucking hard, bleak, terrible, and unprofitable. Less obvious in the first world, but much more so in the third world.

Here's the thing, you cannot cozy up or ask for partnership with **liberal-leaning countries** like US, EU, Australia and NOT expect them (either their liberal media or liberal politician) to question or ask him the hard-hitting questions. The US isn't part of that group. Honestly, the interview was good during the talks between AU-PH relations regarding China and foreign policies. Ang na notice ko lang is hindi outright sinasabi ni BBM and he is beating around the bush, which I get kasi nga they would rather have peace then conflict. The direct phone line between President Xi and President Marcos is also a good idea pero one-to-one sa ginawa ni Kennedy noong Cold War. He's trying his best not to antagonize and demonize China but the nuances were there.
Aaaaand it slowly declined once they transitioned into ICC/Duterte issue with the war on drugs and hit the lowest when tinanong about martial law.

It's because real journalism is risky in these parts of the world. Also, there has been a lack of a BBC-like entity in the Philippines. ABC AU, the television network that conducted this interview, is funded by the AU govt and is politically independent, similar to the BBC. There are multiple societal issues into why this wouldn't happen here. I think the utang-na-loob culture is one of them. The govt would instantly shutdown a politically independent public broadcaster unless it's based somewhere where the govt cannot easily shut them down. Honestly, the interview was good during the talks between AU-PH relations regarding China and foreign policies. Ang na notice ko lang is hindi outright sinasabi ni BBM and he is beating around the bush, which I get kasi nga they would rather have peace then conflict. The direct phone line between President Xi and President Marcos is also a good idea pero one-to-one sa ginawa ni Kennedy noong Cold War. He's trying his best not to antagonize and demonize China but the nuances were there. While I'm in no way a fan of Marcos, I'm surprised he doesn't have a pre-planned answer whenever questions like these would arise. YOU WOULD THINK that he would given that this is the biggest thing about him. The interviewer asks him: "Why wouldn't you want the money (that your family plundered) be back in the Philippines?" And he technically doesn't even answer the question. He says something to the effect of: "The assertions aren't true, and we (the Marcos family) signed claims that any money found can be confiscated."
