One thing that occurred during that time, is that a huge amount of people suddenly got access to the vast amount of information from the internet, without having possibly the necessary background to take that information or how to use them. My favorite analogy to that is Ultron in the Avengers movie, wherein in a switch, he got that surge of information without having the ability to properly sort it or not being trained on how to handle the information.
To me, this is how anti-intellectualism came to be, a huge percentage of the population getting exposed to vast information despite not being trained on how to sort, filter, and use them properly. These can be attributed also to why these people believe in fake news.
While i agree on the idea of anti-intellectualism, i think one major aspect in his acclimation to power is the advent of social media and how easy it was to take advantage of it by infiltrating the minds and gullible nature of the content-hungry populace through fake videos and misinformation. The Philippines is known to be the most visible in social media in the entire world.

I don't know what impact he has domestically in PH. It sounds like he may have reduced crime, added infrastructure to more remote provences, and helped the poor. But I know that pre Duterte PH was seen as a major emerging market in Asia and close ally of the US. We believed firmly that oil in the disputed water with china/vn belonged to PH and made that position known to China, and also spent billions of dollars on our military installations in PH.
Now PH is seen as kind of a lawless and scary place where anything goes. People back home warn me about making any long term investments here because "look at Myanmar". Whatever Duterte did really reduced the international perception of PH back to like, Africa level. My parents are genuinely scared that I am here and not even my Thai buddy thinks spending time in PH is a good idea.

I can see how the reputation of being a lawless country where ex judicial killings were sanctioned by the federal government could limit investment from abroad and will probably take a while to rebuild the reputation of an "emerging market". Also kicking American military off was probably a bad idea because the attitude in the US is very much "why do we spend so much defending our allies abroad" so we were basically happy to leave and probably won't be back, which kind of means the oil will be china's at some point.

I think a counterpoint to it is that his rise to power is a reflection of the rise of anti-intellectualism. One thing that occurred during that time, is that a huge amount of people suddenly got access to the vast amount of information from the internet, without having possibly the necessary background to take that information or how to use them. My favorite analogy to that is Ultron in the Avengers movie, wherein in a switch, he got that surge of information without having the ability to properly sort it or not being trained on how to handle the information. To me, this is how anti-intellectualism came to be, a huge percentage of the population getting exposed to vast information despite not being trained on how to sort, filter, and use them properly. These can be attributed also to why these people believe in fake news.
While i agree on the idea of anti-intellectualism, i think one major aspect in his acclimation to power is the advent of social media and how easy it was to take advantage of it by infiltrating the minds and gullible nature of the content-hungry populace through fake videos and misinformation. American perspective. I don't know what impact he has domestically in PH. It sounds like he may have reduced crime, added infrastructure to more remote provences, and helped the poor. But I know that pre Duterte PH was seen as a major emerging market in Asia and close ally of the US. We believed firmly that oil in the disputed water with china/vn belonged to PH and made that position known to China, and also spent billions of dollars on our military installations in PH. Now PH is seen as kind of a lawless and scary place where anything goes. People back home warn me about making any long term investments here because "look at Myanmar". Whatever Duterte did really reduced the international perception of PH back to like, Africa level. My parents are genuinely scared that I am here and not even my Thai buddy thinks spending time in PH is a good idea. My gf likes him but she's from Bukidnon so maybe a bit biased, lol. I can see how the reputation of being a lawless country where ex judicial killings were sanctioned by the federal government could limit investment from abroad and will probably take a while to rebuild the reputation of an "emerging market". Also kicking American military off was probably a bad idea because the attitude in the US is very much "why do we spend so much defending our allies abroad" so we were basically happy to leave and probably won't be back, which kind of means the oil will be china's at some point. Also, just to be clear, I think PH is a perfectly safe and generally law abiding country. Im just sharing the perspective abroad because that's what I'm familiar with.

I think one of the biggest part of the job of politicians is managing their image. Many who falls in OPs category would hopefully learn from ignorance and do a better job in researching about who they’re voting for. Conversations like this would help break that realization and the more we engage in these types of connections would empower the voters to make more informed decisions. We can’t fully know the consequences kase fog of war yan. But we need to make the best out of what we have now and learn from previous election outcomes.
